Susan Tsang's journey to becoming a field biologist is as unconventional as it is inspiring. Growing up in New York City Susan spent four hours daily on commute (通勤) to school, leaving little time for outdoor exploration. It made her an unlikely candidate for a career in field biology.
Susan's enthusiasm for the natural world was fueled during a visit to the American Museum of Natural History. The dinosaur fossils (化石) awakened her desire to explore nature, which eventually led her to pursue a PhD program focused on bat biology.
Susan's first field exploration was to Indonesia, with the task of catching wild bats. With her advisor unable to help, Susan teamed up with Sigit, an experienced local researcher. They excitedly set up nets for trapping bats near a waterfall. While preparing their equipment, they discovered a bamboo structure leaking fresh water. Thinking it might be useful for their base camp, they tried to fix it, only to have water erupt everywhere, soaking (浸湿) them completely. Unfortunately, a storm was approaching. Realizing their day was lost, they walked back to base camp. They talked and laughed, forming a deep bond.
This adventure provided Susan with not only practical skills but also an invaluable lesson about adaptability and teamwork. It enhanced the significance of practical experience. She recognized that true understanding comes from directly observing the subjects of study — views that cannot be gained only from textbooks. Over the years, whenever faced with doubts regarding her capability, she remembers what her advisor told her about the experience: “The first day you came back, completely wet, yet genuinely happy. The next day you went right back out. That's when I knew this is where you truly belonged.”
Susan Tsang's journey illustrates the transformative power of experience and perseverance. From a city girl to a committed field biologist, Susan's success highlights the importance of pursuing one's enthusiasm, no matter the odds.

Today, being freelancers (自由职业者) is one of the most powerful trends in the way we work.According to a current study, there are 70.4 million freelancers in the US.By 2028, this number will increase to 90.1 million, or 54% of the workforce, basically divided equally between genders.
It would appear to be solid guidance in today's modern workforce to tell someone who wants the “3Fs” — flexibility, fulfillment, and financial independence — to “just go freelance”, right The large numbers and data support this direction and suggest that it could be regarded as safe and wise advice.
However, telling someone who is unhappy in their current professional situation to “just go freelance”, is like telling them to climb Mt Qomolangma without oxygen: 5% of climbers have succeeded, so it can be done, but there will be hardship and a much higher chance of failure.Just as one should weigh the risks of attempting to climb the 8848.86m mountain without essential supplies, the idea of being freelancers must be truly understood.
The number is increasingly growing, however, actually three quarters of self-described freelancers in the US are part-time, meaning the vast majority are using freelance work as a side hustle (副业).What's more, research shows that 70% of full-time freelancers participated in upskilling training.Besides, more than half (58%) of freelancers have experienced non-payment from clients, and most do not have retirement plans or affordable health insurance. Many freelancers fail after the first year as a result of making avoidable mistakes with only a third making it.
We can't simply tell people to “just go freelance” unless we also tell them to invest in training and cooperate with like-minded, supportive communities to strengthen industry rights before they start their journey to the summit as an individual, but never alone.

In today's short attention span information-overloaded age, there are new challenges for creative workers.
For creators, the news and information cycle is so fast that to earn attention for your work suggests you have to keep up with it all.But the other side of that technological coin is that it's easier than ever to make things and distribute them online.
Of course the entire planet does not care when yet more media is added to the world. But even 50 years ago, before the Internet, there were more films made each year than anyone could possibly see and more books published annually than anyone could read.
Before the web there was often no way to get your work distributed unless you had permission.Given the choice of a) depending on the approval of others to finish projects and share them with the world, but having fewer competitors vs.b)being able to put anything into the world, but I have to compete with everyone else for attention.I definitely choose b.At least I have a chance. At least I can compete, and use my skills at creation as an advantage.
Attention from fans matters more than the rest of the world. The most famous people in any media get most of the attention. But the fallacy is that you need to be in that top 1% or 5% to make a living. As a matter of fact, you simply need enough fans and attention to earn you enough money to make a living.
A creative life is not the safe and secure path. The more creative the life you choose, the more risk that will come with it.It can be wonderfully rewarding, but you are choosing to compete to earn a living, and even if you do everything right, the chances are that you can still fail.I recommend doing it anyway, since you will learn more about life and yourself by taking the challenging path, but you should do it with your eyes open.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last year, I worked as a young marketing person in a company. It was one of those busy days — management meetings, sales calls, planning my travels, booking hotels and the list was endless.By the end of the day, I was not only tired but was getting angry with myself and everyone around me.It was at this time that Paul invited me to his house.
Although tired, I was excited to chat with Paul and learn through his rich experience in marketing. As I entered through the main door to his house, Paul started singing a song: I have a dream, to help me through in everything ...and so on.I was in no mood to listen to his song; I wanted to hear about how he dealt with difficult sales calls!
As I told him about just that, I was totally surprised at what I saw next. Two young girls aged between 17 and 20 walked over to Paul and hugged him. They couldn't walk steadily, and neither could they talk properly.Their faces were full of smiles when they heard the song.
Curious to know, I asked Paul who these girls were.I knew that Paul lived in that house but I had never seen these girls.Paul explained, “I also have a dream, a dream to make these girls happy. They are my daughters and they were born as ‘special children’.” And he further added, “They don't have a mother. My wife died when they were very young.” He was both mother and father to the beautiful daughters.
I was moved to tears. In the office, no one knew what Paul was going through in his personal life.He never looked for any pity from his friends. In fact, he always helped us and encouraged us to move forward in life.
I finished my tea and made my way out, when Paul said to me, “All of us have dreams.”

On my way home, his words constantly rang in my mind. Yes, “All of us have dreams”.At that time, my door of memory opened.During the childhood, I dreamt to be a hero like Superman saving the world. With the teenager years going by, my dream was to be a teacher. After graduation from university, I swore to be a successful salesman. Here appeared my dream clearly.Thankfully, it was Paul who helped me find my lost dream. So I decided to thank him the next day.
The next morning, I got to the office earlier than ever. Others not in, I began to clean the whole office happily, waiting to greet every coming co-worker, especially Paul.Everything went smoothly and everyone smiled back at me.Seeing Paul, I approached quickly with the two cups of coffee prepared for us two.“Morning!” I said.“Thank you for your tea and letting me find my precious dream.” A big smile spread across his cheeks, seeming to encourage me to move forward whatever happened.UNIT 3 课时检测(七) 单元语基回顾性盘查
