Dear Peter,
I'm so excited that you're coming to my home! I'd like to tell you some Chinese customs to help you feel at ease.
When greeting my parents, you can shake hands with them or smile and say "Hello" politely. At dinner, please wait for my grandparents to start eating first. It's also important to use serving chopsticks to take food from shared dishes. If you want to bring a gift, small things like flowers or fruit are perfect, but don't bring food unless we ask you to.
I believe you'll get used to these customs soon. Looking forward to your arrival!
Yours,
Li Hua
France is a country with rich cultural customs, especially for parties. Here are some important tips for you.
First, don't arrive early. It's proper to arrive on time or a few minutes late. Second, bring a small gift like chocolate or flowers for the host. Third, dress for the occasion—formal clothes are needed for important parties. Finally, avoid asking private questions like age or income. Talking about food or culture is a safe choice.
Following these tips will help you get along well with others in France.
Last month, I met a foreign student from Japan at school. It was a meaningful experience for me.
When we first met, he bowed to me politely, which made me a little surprised because I was used to shaking hands. I quickly bowed back to show my respect. We talked about our own customs.
Dear Peter,
I'm so excited that you're coming to my home!
He told me that bowing is a common way to greet others in Japan. I also introduced Chinese table manners to him. He was so interested that he asked many questions.
This experience taught me that we should respect different customs. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
