For over 1,300 years, a large rock has been in Mahabalipuram(马哈巴利
普拉姆), a beach town in southern India. The rock is on a hill at a 45 degree
angle.
The rock is popularly known as “Krishna’s Butter Ball”, a favourite
food, butter, fallen from the sky. The rock is 20 feet high and five metres in
diameter(直径), and weighs over 250 tons. It looks like it might slip any
moment and run down the hill, but it has stayed that way for several centuries
now.
Some say the rock is a natural formation(形成), but scientists think that’s
impossible because natural corrosion(腐蚀) couldn’t produce such an unusual
shape. Others think that the rock might have been placed there by the aliens who
visited the earth thousands of years ago.
One of the earliest known attempts(尝试) to move the rock was made by
Narasimhavarman, a Pallava king who ruled southern India from 630 to 668 C. E.
The strongest of his men could not move it at all. More recently, in 1908,
Governor of Madras Arthur Lawley decided that he wanted to get rid of the rock,
fearing that it would slide down the hill. He used seven elephants to do the
task, but much to his surprise, it did not budge at all. .
Krishna’s Butter Ball is now a popular tourist spot, attracting thousands each
year. Visitors make their own attempts to move the rock—they fail, of course,
but always come away with amazing photos!

( C )1. What is Krishna’s Butter Ball according to the text?
A. A kind of Indian food.
B. A popular sport in Mahabalipuram.
C. A rock over 250 tons on the hill.
D. A beach town in southern India.
( A )2. What can we learn from the text?
A. It’s hard to move the rock, though it looks easy to slip.
B. Even wind can blow the rock down the hill.
C. We are sure where the rock came from.
D. Narasimhavarman ruled southern India for fifty years.

Were Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay really the first people to reach the
top of the world’s highest mountain? Some believe that British climbers George
Mallory and Andrew Irvine reached the top before them in June 1924. Unluckily,
this is difficult to know for sure because both men disappeared somewhere high on
the mountain.
In 1999, a team of climbers visited the mountain, hoping to learn the
truth. Near the First Step, on the way to the mountain top, the team found
Mallory’s oxygen tank(氧气罐), which shows he and Irvine had been near the
top. Close by, a member of the team—Conrad Anker—discovered Mallory’s
body(尸体).
When the team checked Mallory’s body, they found things like a knife and
matches, but no photos. Why is this important? Mallory had carried a photo of
his wife with him. He had planned to leave the photo at the top of the mountain, if
he reached it. So some people guess he might reach the top.
Did Mallory and Irvine really reach the top? Probably not, according to
Anker. Here are some reasons why he thought this way.
▲ : Mallory and Irvine were last seen near the mountain’s Second Step.
This is a 27 metre wall of rock. Climbing this part is very difficult, even with
modern climbing equipment(设备). Without the right tools, it is impossible
that Mallory and Irvine were able to continue to the top. 。
No frostbite(冻伤): Mallory and Irvine were seen near the top late in the
day. Climbers who reach the top at this time need to camp at the top. If they do
this, it is common to get frostbite. But Mallory’s body had no signs of frostbite.
So what happened to Mallory and Irvine? Anker thinks they probably turned
back just after the First Step. When Mallory was going down the mountain,
perhaps he fell by accident. Irvine’s body has never been found. Whatever
happened, they will always be remembered as early brave climbers.

There are lots of forests in some parts of Xizang. To protect them, some
scientists from Peking University and some other universities did research on them
this year. During the research, they found lots of useful and important trees in
them.

In May, 2023, the researchers found a large number of trees over 85 metres
high, including 25 trees over 90 metres. One of them is 102.3 metres. And it
breaks the Asian record, becoming the tallest tree in Asia. (The tallest tree
found in China last year was 83.2 metres.)
They found the record breaking tree, called the Cupressus torulosa(西藏柏
木), at the national nature reserve of Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon(雅鲁藏
布大峡谷国家自然保护区). The Cupressus torulosa mostly lives in
southeastern Xizang. The tree doesn’t have a large area to live in and the population
of it is small. It is the national first class protected plant now. With the help of
drones(无人机)and a laser radar(激光雷达), the researchers were sure
about the 102.3 metre tree. It is the second tallest tree in the world after the one in
America which is 115.85 metres.
The number of tall trees in the world is very small, because they need proper
living environment and they must be far away from wind, fire and human
activities.
One of the researchers said the tallest tree in Asia can help to research the
weather conditions and living environment that trees need so that they can help to
save some other endangered plants in the area.
