On a busy afternoon, as Mr Rupert greeted customers in his cafe, a
homeless man walked in, wearing smelly, old clothes. “Excuse me, sir. I
haven’t had any food in days. Could you give me something to eat? Some
leftovers(剩菜), perhaps?” Mr Rupert stepped back, bringing the
leftovers to the trash bin. He said rudely, “You can have all the leftovers you
want ... from the trash. Now GET OUT!” The homeless man walked out in
shame.
Later that evening, the cafe caught on fire. Mr Rupert watched his cafe, on
which he spent all his savings, burned to the ground. He broke down, all alone.
Mr Rupert sat on a bench outside his cafe, his head resting on his hands,
until the following morning. He felt hungry but his pocket was empty. He walked
towards the Pizza House nearby, feeling embarrassed. “Excuse me, sir. Could
you please give me something to eat? I’m hungry. And ... I ... I can’t pay you.”
The manager replied impatiently, “Alright, I can give you last night’s
leftovers, but don’t expect me to do this every day!”
The words hit Mr Rupert like a ton of bricks. Just as he rushed out of the
Pizza House with the bag of leftovers, he noticed the homeless man he’d kicked
out of his cafe. He walked towards him, “Hey, excuse me. I’m sorry for not
helping you yesterday.” The homeless man was surprised. Mr Rupert told him
what had happened and shared his breakfast.
The homeless man introduced himself as Freddie and told his similar story to
Mr Rupert. The two men decided to stick together. Freddie took Mr Rupert to the
homeless shelter.
In the following days, Mr Rupert kept looking for a job. In the end, he got
them both a job—a waiter and a dishwasher in a restaurant.
As time passed, Mr Rupert and Freddie gave their best in their new roles.
Their hard work paid off well several months later when they were asked to be the
manager and the cook.
One day, while discussing making a change to the restaurant, Mr Rupert
advised, “Why don’t we start a project—Leftover Love: Free Meals on
Wheels? We can give out leftovers on a food truck instead of throwing them
away. In that way, we grab ourselves a chance to help the homeless and the
needy!” “That’s a fantastic idea. Let’s do this!” Everyone agreed.
As they watched a crowd of happy homeless diners enjoying their meals
outside their food truck, Mr Rupert said, “This is just the beginning!” .

In Britain you may often hear “Drop in any time” or “Come to see me
soon”, but you can’t really do that. People just say those things to make you feel
welcome. It is better to telephone before visiting someone at home. If you
receive a written invitation to an event that says “RSVP”, you should reply to
let the person who sent the invitation know whether or not you plan to go.
You should never accept an invitation unless you really plan to go. You may
refuse by saying, “Thank you for inviting me, but I will not be able to go.”
If, after accepting, you are unable to go, be sure to tell those who are
expecting you as soon as possible that you will not be there. Although it is not
necessarily expected that you give a gift to your host, it is considered polite to do
so, especially if you have been invited for a meal. Flowers, chocolate, or a
small gift are all proper. A thank you note or telephone call after the visit is also
considered polite and is an appropriate way to express your appreciation for the
invitation.
( D )1. What can you do when a British friend says, “Drop in any
time”?
A. Visit him or her at any time.

Hi Armino,
Glad to hear from you and know you are excited about coming to China
soon.

There is indeed something you need to know. Let me tell you.
In China, people use chopsticks instead of knives and forks. And there are
some important rules when using them. For example, it’s impolite to point at
someone with chopsticks. Moreover, we don’t stick them into the food. Besides,
we are not supposed to start eating first if there are older people at the table.

(113 words)
As for places of interest, China National Tea Museum is a good choice. You
can enjoy tea art performances there and see various types of tea so you can know
more about Chinese tea culture.
Hope you will have a great time in China.
Yours,
Li Ping

China covers large areas and has a great population. Different living habits
have always been an interesting topic in the country. Recently, another
difference between southern Chinese and northern Chinese became a hot one: the
way people shop at markets.
People from southern China say that they always buy what they need for just
one or two meals. It is normal for them to buy half a cabbage, two potatoes
and 0.25 kilograms of beef at a time.
However, one may be laughed at if he does this in the north. Instead,
buying vegetables and meat enough for a week is usual. Also, you can buy a
small amount of fruit, such as a single apple or pear, each time in the south.
Shop owners even help you peel and cut them. But shop owners in the north hardly
offer such service. And many fruits are sold in baskets and boxes.
The difference could be due to the different weather.
Food can be kept for a long time in the north, as it is usually cold and dry
there. Many northern Chinese have the habit of storing food, especially for the
long winter. But the hot and wet weather in the south makes southern Chinese
buy just enough food for one meal or one day, or else the food may go bad.

the 8 , she’d draw a name from the box, and that student could take the tree
