Passage 1
(24-25八年级下·江苏盐城射阳县实验初级中学·期中)
When she was alone, Mary felt lonelier than ever. She went out of the house and ran around the garden ten times. Ben Weatherstaff was working in it.
“Spring is coming,” he said to Mary. “I can smell it in the air. ▲ .”
At this moment, the robin flew towards them and landed at Mary’s feet.
“He remembers me,” she said.
“He knows everything here,” Ben said. “Only he knows what’s happening in the secret garden without a door into it. No one else has been inside it for ten years.”
Ben walked away to continue his work. Mary began talking to the robin. She felt happier than she had ever felt.
The robin trusted her and did not fly away. It began pecking (啄食) at the ground, looking for a worm to eat. Mary looked closely at the ground. She saw that there was something like metal (金属). She picked it up. It was dirty and rusty. She cleaned it and saw that it was a key.
“It’s been in the ground for many years,” she thought. “I wonder if it is the key to the garden. If it is, then I must find the door.”
Mary skipped (跳跃) around the garden. The robin followed her. Mary stopped skipping and spoke to the robin.
“He showed me where to find the key,” she thought. “Can you show me where the door is ”
The robin sat on the top of the garden wall. It began to sing. The wall was covered with ivy. Mary pulled at a piece of the ivy. It came away from the wall. Behind the wall was a door. Mary put the key in the lock of the door and turned it. The door opened. Only seconds later, Mary was inside the secret garden.
Mary thought it was the most beautiful garden she had ever seen.

However, as they walked on, they found they were lost. Becky started to cry wildly.
“Surely, your mother will see tonight that you haven’t come back,” Tom said. “She’ll send people out to look for you.”
Becky thought for a moment and then started to cry even harder. “Oh, Tom. She thinks that I’m sleeping at the Harpers tonight. She won’t find that I’m missing until late the next morning!”
“Alright, Becky. Let’s not cry. We should just keep walking. As long as we walk, there’s hope.”
So they walked with no idea where they were going. Tom, after a while, had to put out the candle in order to save it. And so much of the time they walked in total darkness. Tom tried calling out for help several times but never got any answer in return.
Tom had some kite string (风筝线) in his pocket. He took it out and tied one end to a rock. Then he told Becky to sit and wait for him. Tom lit the candle again and made his way down one of the roads. The story all started when my best friend, Tom Sawyer and I found $ 12,000 in a cave (山洞). That money made us rich. We got $6,000 each. Judge (法官) Thatcher, an important man in town, put it in the bank, and now we get a dollar interest (利息) a day.

But then her sister Miss Watson arrived. She brought her black slave (奴隶) Jim with her. I liked Jim but I didn’t like Miss Watson very much. She often shouted at me.
Douglas sent me to school every day. I didn’t like going there at first because learning was very difficult. But when I could read and write a bit, I didn’t hate going.
The months passed and winter came. The weather got cold. One morning, I woke up and there was snow on the ground. On my way to school I saw some footprints outside Douglas’s house. There was a cross (十字架) on the heel (鞋跟) of the left one. My heart jumped. Only one person wore boots with a cross on the left heel! Pap!
“He’s heard about my money.” I thought. “And he wants it!”

“No, sir.” I told him. “Is there some for me ”
He chuckled. “Yes, Huck, but maybe you should let me invest it for you instead of spending it.”
“No, sir.” I said. “I don’t want to invest it or spend it. I don’t want it at all. I want you to take it. It’s all yours.”
He looked surprised. “I don’t understand. Why would you want to give it away ”
“Don’t ask me no questions, Judge Thatcher. Just take it, please.”
He scratched his head. “Well, I’m puzzled. Is something the matter ”
“Just take it, and don’t ask me about it. That way I won’t have to tell any lies.”
He studied on it a while. “Oh, I think I see. You want to sell all your property to me, not give it away. I will pay you one dollar.”
Then he wrote something on a sheet of paper and said, “There, you see It says ‘for a consideration’. That means I have bought it from you and paid for it. Here is a dollar. Now you sign the paper.”

Passage 2
(24-25八年级下·江苏盐城市东台市·期中)
During all this time I never stopped thinking about escape (逃脱). When I traveled across to the other side of the island, I could see the other islands, and I said to myself: “Perhaps I can get there with a boat. Perhaps I can get back to England one day.”
So I decided to make myself a boat. I cut down a big tree, and then began to make a long hole in it. It was hard work, but about six months later, I had a very fine canoe (独木舟). Next, I had to get it down to the sea. How silly I was! Why didn’t I think before I began to work Of course, the canoe was too heavy. I couldn’t move it. I pulled and pushed and tried everything, but it didn’t move. I was very unhappy for a long time after that.
That happened in my fourth year on the island. In my sixth year I did make myself a smaller canoe, but I did not try to escape in it. The boat was too small for a long journey, and I did not want to die at sea. The island was my home now, not my prison, and I was just happy to be alive.
A year or two later, I made myself a second canoe on the other side of the island. I also built myself a second house there, and so I had two homes.
My life was still busy from morning to night. There were always things to do or to make. I learnt to make new clothes for myself from the skins of dead animals. They looked very strange, it is true, but they kept me dry in the rain.
I kept food and tools at both my houses, and also wild goats (山羊). There were many goals on the island, and I made fields with high fences to keep them in. I learnt that the name of their country was Lilliput. The emperor of Lilliput was a noble-looking man. He wore expensive clothes and had a big hat decorated with feathers. The queen was also very elegant (优雅的). Hundreds of the little people worked together to make new clothes for me and they gathered six hundred mattresses (床垫) to make me a bed.

Passage 4
(24-25八年级下·江苏扬州市邗江区维扬中学·期中)
In the interesting book “Gulliver’s Travels”, the main character, Lemuel Gulliver, who is an English surgeon, has some really unusual adventures. He travels to four lands that only exist in imagination.
His first adventure is in Lilliput. People there are very tiny, only 15 cm tall. They are so strange that they even fight over how to break eggs, from the big end or the small end. And they tie up Gulliver with ropes. What’s more interesting, they figure out how important a person is by seeing if he or she can dance on a rope.
Next, Gulliver gets to Brobdingnag. Here, it’s a completely different scene. Giants are everywhere and they look so huge compared to Gulliver. A farmer’s daughter takes him around in a box. Here, he sees that human flaws seem much bigger. For example, a face that looks nice usually looks rough when something makes it look larger.
Then, Gulliver comes to Laputa. The scientists there waste time making useless things like a machine turning sunlight into cucumbers. It sounds really crazy, right The author, Swift, uses this to show that some people in the old days just believed in science blindly without really knowing what good it could do.
Finally, in Houyhnhnm Land, wise horses are in charge and live peacefully. But the human-like Yahoos are greedy. Gulliver likes the horses’ smart way of thinking and feels bad about human cruelty. After coming back home, he doesn’t like being with people and would rather be with horses.

Passage 1
(24-25八年级下·江苏盐城市射阳县实验初级中学·期中)
For 16-year-old Ma Yifei, the violin performance of the Beijing 2022 Olympic theme song, Snowflake, was her best present for Paralympians (残奥运动员) all over the world. Even though (尽管) snowflakes are related to winter, she let others feel warmth, hope and light through her performance. “I’m also disabled and I want to do something for them with my music,” said Ma.
Ma went blind at the age of two because of an illness. She became interested in music when she was young. She started to learn to play the piano at five and the violin at nine, experiencing the “colorful” music through sound and emotion.
Ma’s mother Ha Chunyan, a former music teacher in a primary school, helped her memorize the music score (乐谱) before she played the piano. Ma could not see the keys and always played the wrong notes. It took her thousands of tries to play a piece correctly.
Learning the violin was more challenging (挑战性的). Ma needed to feel the teacher’s hands, arms and back to learn the movements, and listen to the strings (弦) over and over again to feel the muscles (肌肉) herself.
“After three years of learning, she still could not make any sound except terrible noises,” said Ha, who advised her daughter to give up the violin. But Ma said, “As I’ve been practicing so long, it’s hard to give up. I believe I will play better if I persist in practicing.”
In 2018, Ma got a chance to follow Sheng Yuan and Cao Yuhan, famous musicians from the Central Conservatory of Music, to study music in Beijing. She left her home in Ningxia to follow her musical dream, though she knew there would be more challenges ahead.
Ma expressed her excitement about performing at the big event. “All my hard work has paid off. I’m proud of standing on the stage today.”

Passage 2
(24-25八年级下·江苏扬州市广陵区·期中)
I will never forget the tenth summer of childhood with my grandfather in western Norway on the mountain farm where my mother was born. As a boy, I always thought people simply bought whatever they need. Whether Grandfather knew this, I didn’t know. One day he said, “Come, I have something for you. ’’
I followed him to a workroom. “You should have a toy boat. You can sail it at Storvassdal,” he said. “Great,” I thought, looking around for the boat. But there was none.
Grandfather pointed to a block of wood. “The boat is there,” he said. Then he handed me some tools and showed me how to use them properly. “It’ll be a fine boat, and you’ll make it with your own hands,” he said, “No one can give you what you do for yourself.” The words rang in my head as I worked. The boat was finished. It wasn’t much to look at, but I was proud. Then I sailed it at Storvassdal.
We had to return to America. “You cannot bring that boat home with you,” my mother said. We had too much baggage. Feeling sad, I hid my boat under a big rock at Storvassdal.
I said good-bye to Grandfather, not knowing I would never see him again.
In 1964, I went to Storvassdal with my parents and my wife and children. To my surprise, for 34 years my treasure stayed here, waiting for my return. I felt we three were together again although my grandfather had died 22 years before. I carved (雕刻) “1930” and “1964” on its side and put it back.
I returned to the lake in 1968, 1971, 1977 and 1988. Each time I had the boat and carved the year, my grandfather seemed near. My last trip to Storvassdal was in 1991.
1.What lesson did the writer’s grandfather probably teach him
A.Boys should have a toy boat at childhood.
B.People can simply buy whatever they need.

Passage 3
(24-25八年级下·江苏南京外国语学校·期中)
I may not be a “bad” runner, but I am slow. The farthest I have ever run is 6 km—and it happened because I was going to a pub at the other end.
① When you first start running, people get you excited about experience in the “runner’s high”, hat magical physiological (生理的) sense of extreme excitement you will get from really pushing your body. I’ve never run fast enough, or far enough, to get close to that extraordinary phenomenon, but what I have experienced, however, is the “runner’s smugness”.
② I’ve been running now for our year. I had tried to become runner before, downloading the Couch to 5K app. I thought maybe this was something that could help reduce my anxiety. But it didn’t stick. It felt impossible to jog for a whole minute. Plus, there were just too many other, less horrible—feeling things I could be doing
③ That changed with COVID—19 lockdowns. Suddenly, I had too much time—and increasing anxiety that I needed to get on top of it. So I reopened the app and started running again.
④ I could run for a minute, no problem. Then three, then five, and then eight. Finally, I did it: I reached the 5 km mark. It was slow. I certainly stopped several times. I got home and collapsed straight into an armchair. And so there lies the smugness I did something. I managed to put on my sneakers and running outfit, leave the house for 30 minutes and go for a run.
Over the years, I’ve noticed that running reduces my anxiety. On a particularly anxious day, running can help me get out of my head—or, at the very least, give me something else to do for half an hour.
For me, running isn’t about the “runner’s high”. It’s about the small, everyday achievement of doing something I know will make me feel better in the long run. Feeling smug about these little wins is enough.
1.What is the author’s primary motivation for running
A.To achieve a “runner’s high”. B.To improve her running speed.
C.To manage her anxiety. D.To compete in races.
2.What does the underlined phrase ‘on top of’ in Para. 4 probably mean
A.very excited about B.very close to C.in addition to D.in control of
3.‘Over time, I got better.’ This sentence is best placed in ________.
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
4.What does the author mean by “runner’s smugness”
A.A feeling of being better than other runners.
B.A sense of pride in achieving a small goal.
C.A sense of failure because of her slow pace.
D.A feeling of anger for not achieving a “runner’s high”.
5.What is the main idea of the passage
A.The author’s experience of becoming a runner and how running helps her.
B.The difference between the “runner’s high” and the “runner’s smugness”.
C.The recommendation of running apps like the Couch to 5K.
D.The importance of running in reducing anxiety.

As they were looking up at the ceiling, they saw that there were thousands of bats hanging there. They were so afraid that they started to quickly walk toward the other side of the room. They tried another way because they thought it was not safe to go back through the room with the bats.
He didn’t get far when the floor in front of him suddenly dropped fast into the black world below. He stretched his arm to feel how deep the drop was. While he was feeling around, his hand touched another hand. Tom jumped back and held out his candle to see who was there. A face then showed up. It was the face of Injun Joe.

I didn’t waste any time running down the hill. I looked over my shoulder every now and then to see if I was being followed. Nobody was there. I made it to Judge Thatcher’s place as quick as I could.
“Why, boy You are out of breath,” he said. “Did you come for some of your money ”

One night, John came into the stable (马厩), calling, “Wake up, Beauty!”
He put my saddle (马鞍) and bridle (缰绳) on and rode up to the front door of the house. The Squire was there.
“John,” he said, “Mrs Gordon is very ill. Ride to the doctor’s and give him this note.”
“Now, Beauty, do your best,” said John.
I went as fast as possible.
When we arrived at Dr White’s house, John told him, “Mrs Gordon is very ill. Squire Gordon thinks she is going to die. Please go to see her immediately (立刻).” “Yes,” said the doctor, “but my son has my horse. Can I have yours ” he asked.
The doctor was heavier than John, and not such a good rider. But I did my best and went as fast as possible. When we got to Birtwick Park, Squire Gordon was at the door. The doctor went into the house with him, and Joe led me to the stable. I was glad to be home.
My legs were shaking, and I was very wet. Joe was young and he forgot to put a warm blanket on me. Then he gave me cold water to drink. Soon all my body began to shake, and I felt very cold.
A long time later, John came back. He covered me with two or three warm blankets, and ran to the house for some hot water. He gave me some warm food, and then I think I went to sleep.
Over and over again, John said to himself, “Stupid (愚蠢的) boy! Stupid boy!”
I was now very sick, and John was nursing me night and day.
The Squire came to see me. “Poor Beauty,” he said one day. “You saved Mrs Gordon’s life.”
