You’ve probably said the rhyme, “Pinky swear (许诺), seal (盖印) the promise, never break it for a hundred years.” — perhaps even as an adult. 1_____ have you ever wondered about its meaning, especially the puzzling part that 2_____ “hang yourself” in Chinese
That’s the part most misunderstood. It actually has 3_____ to do with hanging from a tree. Instead, it comes from an old 4_____ custom. “Hang” was a word for counting coins long ago. In ancient times, when people made a deal, they hung up strings (串) of coins to show the 5_____ was set and the deal was finished — no one could change their mind. 6_____, this “hanging” action became a sign of “making an agreement”.
“Pinky swear” is like “promising from the heart”. The 7_____ finger is linked to a certain energy pathway. This pathway is thought to be 8_____ to the heart. When people hook (钩) pinkies, it means their hearts are joined, and they will keep their promise.
Then 9_____ do we press our thumbs together In traditional culture, the thumb is linked to the earth, a symbol of being honest. Pressing thumbs is like “sealing the promise” — so the promise feels very 10_____.

When we feel stressed, many of us eat junk food to feel better. But a new study says this might not be a good idea. The study found that eating a lot of fatty foods can change animals’ brains in ways that increase their anxiety levels.
Christopher Lowry, who led the study, says we knew junk food could make us fat, but we didn’t know it could also make us feel more nervous.
In an earlier study, they found that large mice that ate a lot of fat had more signs of brain inflammation (炎症) and acted more nervously. To better understand why a high-fat diet might cause anxiety, the researchers put some mice into two groups. Half got a standard diet of about 11% fat for nine weeks, and the others got a high-fat diet of 45% fat. They looked at the mice’s gut (肠) health and then gave the mice tests to see how they behaved. When compared to the control group, the group eating a high-fat diet, not surprisingly, were heavier. They also had fewer types of good bacteria (细菌) in their guts. And they had more of certain things in their brains, which have something to do with stress and anxiety.
__________ Fats from food like fish can be good for our brains. But his research in animals suggests that too much fat, especially at a young age, might make the brain more likely to suffer from anxiety now and later in life.
14. What does the underlined word “anxiety” refer to
A. Excitement and happiness. B. A type of delicious fatty food.
C. Physical strength and energy. D. Feelings of worry or nervousness.
15. What can we learn about the study
A. Mice in both groups had the same diet.
B. Researchers tested the mice’s behavior.
C. The study lasted for less than two months.
D. One third of the mice got a standard diet of 11% fat.
16. Which shows the relationship between the weight of a mouse (a) and how much fat it took in (b)
17. Which of the following can be put in “__________” in the last paragraph
A. Lowry explains that not all fats are bad.

C. Lowry believes that high-fat diets hurt the brain.
D. Lowry believes that a healthy diet is the key to happiness.

Chinese Five-Animal Exercises, also known as Wuqinxi, are the first complete set of qigong exercises following the movements of animals: monkeys, deer, birds, bears and tigers. They were created by one of the greatest doctors in Chinese history, Hua Tuo, more than 1,800 years ago.
Five-Animal Exercises are designed to get the blood moving around the body and help energy travel smoothly through it, helping people to feel better and be in good physical condition.
“The bear movements are good for the stomach. The tiger movements can reduce the pain in the back. The deer movements help reduce the fat around the middle part of the body. The bird movements can help keep our knees healthy and the monkey movements can be good for the heart.” said Hua Yi, the 59th keeper of Wuqinxi.
For those new learners, you may find it hard to pay attention. Wear comfortable clothes, keep peaceful in your mind, try to move slowly ... Little by little, you’ll feel more and more in balance with nature. You may even feel you become a tiger or a deer, walking in the forest freely.
These exercises need no tools and they are easy to learn. You can search online for the videos and practise them at any time when you feel like relaxing your body and mind. Because it’s fun to practise and good for health, Five-Animal Exercises are becoming more and more popular in recent years, not only in China, but also in many other places of the world.
18. Why do people practise Five-Animal Exercises
A. To fight against enemies. B. To protect wild animals.
C. To improve their health. D. To play as a group game.

From Bali to Hawaii, from Turkey to Iceland, 26-year-old Jimmy Antram has “seen” many amazing places in the world. It seems almost impossible for him, but he has done all this on his mother’s back.
Jimmy was born with physical and mental disabilities, including blindness. He needs 24-hour care from his mom, Nicole Antram. He has a wheelchair (轮椅), but Ms Antram never enjoys using it. She is happy to carry him on her back while she is physically able, and helps him walk short distances on his own. Beautiful photos taken around the world show their love for life.
Ms Antram keeps a detailed plan and calls ahead for every place they visit. “Even if I know we will be okay, I like to tell the places to make sure they understand and are okay with having us there,” she says.
She feels lucky that her son shares similar interests with her. They both love the outdoors, water, and adventures (冒险). “I’d stay out all night with Jimmy because he is a party animal, just like me,” she says. “I will find ways with Jimmy to give him the best and most exciting life.”
When they are not traveling, they wake up early and go for a bike ride. They smile and wave at their neighbors. People who were once strangers have come to know and love Jimmy, and admire Ms Antram. Before their early outing, she has already made breakfast, fed Jimmy and dressed him for the day. Her daily life is very tiring, but she is strong-minded to give Jimmy the best life she can.
Ms Antram says her heart “broke” the day she learned her son was permanently (永久的) blind, and it took a long time to get over those feelings of hurt. “Being a mom, I didn’t get that carefree life that most moms get,” she says, “but it’s my obligation (责任).”

As young people, many of us dream of becoming “somebody” when we grow up. But sometimes we feel it is hard to get there. At times, we may think: Should we just give up and “lie flat”
Not the little piggy and his three friends from the popular cartoon movie *Nobody*. Their story encouraged many people in China. The four little monsters (怪兽) pretend (伪装) to be the famous characters from *Journey to the West*. They leave Langlang Mountain and start their own journey. Along the way, many other monsters laugh at their dreams. But the little pig and his friends are not discouraged. They keep fighting and try to live life on their own terms.
Some say that *Nobody* is like a mirror. In real life, many common people also hold on to their dreams, even when they face great difficulties.
One of them is Pang Zhongwang, now a student at Tsinghua University. Twenty-six years ago, he was born a poor child in the countryside of Hebei. His mother had a disability and couldn’t work. His father had a serious mental illness. But Pang grew up optimistic (乐观的). He started to help his family at a young age. He also dreamed of becoming “somebody”. With hard work, he always got good grades. In 2017, he caught national attention by scoring an amazing 684 points out of 750 in the gaokao.
Pang turns out to be luckier than the four monsters in *Nobody*. He is much closer to his dream of becoming “somebody”. The piggy and his friends fail in their journey. But their courage is now remembered by many. In a way, they, too, have grown to become “somebody”.
Now, what do you want to do with your big dreams Clearly, if you “lie flat”, you will remain a “nobody”. Wish you good luck as you try to break out of your own “Langlang Mountain”!
Where do the four little monsters leave and start their own journey
How did Pang Zhongwang achieve success
