A 14-year-old Girl Built an App to Help Alzheimer’s Patients (老年痴呆症患者)
For many teenagers, their lives typically might circle around schoolwork and spending
time with friends. Not so for Emma Yang. Though the Hong Kong-born girl is only 14, she
already 17 (create) her own mobile app for Alzheimer’s patients.
The Timeless app, which Yang spent two years 18 (develop), comes with
several important features. It is an artificial intelligence-powered facial recognition system in
the app 19 helps Alzheimer’s patients identify people in photos and remember
who they are. It also allows photos 20 (group) by individuals as well as provides a
picture-based phone book, which enables a user to tap on photos to call or text a person.
The inspiration to develop an app that would help Alzheimer’s patients connect with
their loved ones came to Yang at the age of 12, when her grandmother started forgetting
things like 21 she lived and Yang’s birthday.
共8页,第 2页
“I wanted to create something to help people like my grandmother stay 22 (close)
to her family than before,” Yang said. It was a task she was well-prepared to undertake,
23 venture capitalists didn’t take her work seriously. Yang started a crowdfunding
campaign in March last year 24 (support) her Timeless app project. That effort raised
more than US$10,000.
At present, Yang works with an international team that includes a designer in California
and a developer in Cologne, Germany. The chief technology officer of Kairos, the AI
company whose technology is used in the Timeless app, is now Yang’s adviser.
Yang urged other young, ambitious people to believe in 25 because the
teenagers of today will be tomorrow’s leaders. “Technology 26 help kids turn their
ideas into action,” she said. “As long as you get out there and put yourself out there, tell
people about your idea and find out who’s on board and can get behind it, you’ll eventually
find that team of people.”

TCM teas are hotter in health market
Herbal tea inspired by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is being prepared at a TCM
hospital in Dingxi, Gansu province, in December. Several Chinese hospitals have found their
27 in the country’s growing health drinks market by prescribing herbal formulas (开
处方 ) that target minor 28 , from calming nerves and aiding sleep to promoting
healthy hair.
Yunnan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine recently launched five
herbal medicine formulas for drinking. On the first day of the market 29 , 10,000
doses (剂量) were sold.
Wan Xixi, deputy director of the hospital’s medical administration department, says
these formulas are finished 30 on prescriptions from famous TCM practitioners (从
业人员). Each dose of herbs is 31 packaged and can be boiled for easy consumption
at home. “The bags of dried herbs are not 32 for purchase on the market. To obtain
them, individuals must obtain a prescription as they are tailored to individual differences,”
Wan explains.
In recent years, an increasing number of health-conscious people have developed a
strong interest in such herbal tea drinks.
Many Chinese hospitals, especially TCM hospitals, are keen to promote their special
herbal tea formulas, some of which change seasonally. For example, in summer, they focus
on formulas of smoked tea for 33 from summer heat. In winter, herbal tea formulas
for throat clearing are more popular.
In addition to hospitals, many pharmacies (药房 ), including the 34 brand
Beijing Tong Ren Tang, have seen a boost in herbal tea sales.

others, and can be consumed as food, herbal formulas are still 36 medicine and should
be taken under proper medical supervision.
III. Reading comprehension
Section A (15分)
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A,
B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
Should You Listen to Music When YouWork
Do you like to listen to music when you work
Ask this question at a party, and you’ll probably get 37 responses. Some will say
they love it, claiming that it improves their performance; others will say they find it
distracting and cannot work 38 with music playing in the background.
Interestingly enough, our research has found that both of these viewpoints can be true. It
just 39 on what sort of work you're doing.
In a recent study, we brought participants into our lab to perform a variety of tasks. They
included a (n) 40 task — searching through word lists and crossing out words
containing the letter “a” and a more difficult task — memorizing word pairs and 41
word to its partner. Some participants completed all of the tasks in silence, 42 others
completed the tasks with instrumental music that was either loud or soft, and either simple or
complex, the latter meaning music with more instruments being played. Several key findings
43 from our study.
We found that participants who listened to simple music or no music performed about
the same on the easy task. However, participants who listened to 44 music performed
best on the easy task.
On the contrary, participants performed worse on the more difficult task when they
listened to any music, regardless of complexity or volume, compared to those who didn’t
listen to any music.
How should we 45 these findings
We suggest that people have limited mental resources from which both 46 and
tasks can draw. We can become 47 and our minds may wander when these resources
are not fully used. But we also can become over-excited and 48 when these resources
are used up.
Not surprisingly, we typically need to use fewer of our mental resources when we
perform easy tasks, whereas demanding tasks require more brainpower. However, because we
might be less 49 during easier tasks, there’s a greater risk of drifting off. Music might
give us the extra 50 we need to overcome the monotony (单调). However, difficult
tasks already demand a lot of our resources. Listening to music can become too much.
So best 51 should appear when we strike “sweet spot”, which may depend on
the type of music and the type of task.

Section B (14分)
Directions: Read the following two passages. Each passage is followed by several questions
or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D.
Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just
read.
(A)
For many people, spending time in nature can be a relaxing, enjoyable experience.
Immersing (沉浸) oneself in the green field of grass, or the shade of a forested path can be
truly calming and health-giving.
Recently, researchers from the University of Exeter and the University of Vienna have
published a study in Nature Communications that showed not only does being in nature help
reduce discomfort, but looking at nature could have a similar effect.
The study showed that people who viewed images of nature experienced less discomfort
than those who saw images of a city or an indoor office. In addition, examinations of the
participants’ brains also showed changes in brain responses associated with dealing with
discomfort. This means that seeing nature has an effect on discomfort, just like being in
nature does. This is welcome news for people who do not live near green spaces.
However, a few months later, the researchers published another study, this time in
discomfort, showing that scenes of nature in virtual (虚 拟 的 ) reality had more
discomfort-killing power than 2D scenes.
In order to test how virtual reality affects the sensation of discomfort, the researchers set
up an experiment with 29 healthy participants, who were shown two different types of nature
scenes, one in virtual reality and the other in 2D, after discomfort was delivered to their
forearms via electric shocks.
The researchers found that the life-like virtual reality scenes reduced the development
and feeling of discomfort in the participants. In fact, the virtual reality was almost two times
as effective as the 2D scenes were.

There are many effects of these studies, especially concerning how people sense and
experience discomfort. However, more importantly, there are also potential practical effects
of the studies. Though getting out into nature can be helpful in terms of treating discomfort,
there are many people in the world who suffer from long-term discomfort and are unable to
go into nature.
52. What did the two universities’ study find about looking at natural scenes
A. It strengthens the sense of discomfort.
B. It changes the structure of the brain.
C. It makes people feel bored with cities.
D. It works like real nature in easing discomfort.
53. Why are the participants’ brains examined
A. To compare the brain structures of different people.
B. To improve the brain’s ability to process discomfort.
C. To measure the brain’s responses to different images.
D. To locate the brain areas responsible for viewing nature.
54. Based on the studies in the passage, what will doctors probably do to help patients with
limited movement
A. Provide them with recovery training.
B. Bring nature to them.
C. Give discomfort killers to them.
D. Show them various forms of entertainment.
55. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. The Discomfort Management of Modern Technologies
B. The Health-giving Power of Real Natural Environments
C. The Response Changes of Brains When Dealing with Discomfort
D. The Discomfort-reducing Effect of Various Nature-Based Scenes
(B)
Read the text below. Is your supermarket plan similar to this
●Fruit and vegetables are normally close to the entrance. This makes people think they
are going into an open-air market and makes them feel positive.
●Stores are usually decorated in colors that make people feel healthy and happy. All the
supermarkets belonging to one company have the same colors to make people feel at home.
●A person blinks(眨眼) an average of 32 times a minute. US research has shown that a
certain type of lighting can reduce this to 14 times a minute. This can make customers feel
sleepy, and they then buy more goods.
●Goods placed at the end of an aisle (走廊) often sell five times more than those placed
in the middle of the aisle. Stores often move goods that they particularly want to sell, such as
those nearing their sell-by date, to these sites.
●Most shoppers buy bread, so the bakery counter is situated as far away from the
entrance as possible. Customers will have to walk past hundreds of other products to reach it.
共8页,第 6页
●Drinks are usually located near the exit. Supermarkets hope that customers will buy
because they are in a good mood as they finish their shopping experience.
●Silence makes shoppers feel uncomfortable. Supermarkets like to make sure that there
is quite a lot of pleasant background noise.
●Security cameras are not just for catching shoplifters. Supermarkets also follow a few
shoppers through the shop so that they can observe what routes people take. This information
helps them to rearrange their products to appeal to more customers.
56. What is the passage mainly about
A. Why supermarket plans are similar to each other.
B. What factors contribute to supermarkets’ success.
C. Why some supermarkets appeal to more customers.
D. What supermarkets do to encourage customers to buy more.
57. Why are goods that near their sell-by date placed at the end of an aisle
A. They are more likely to be sold there.
B. They may give shoppers a bad feeling.
C. They are less attractive than other products.
D. They are what supermarkets want to give up.
58. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage
A. Shoppers like carrying vegetables around the supermarket.
B. Cameras are used to improve the supermarkets' layout.
C. Lighting in supermarkets helps shoppers to stay alert.
D. Background noise will make shoppers sleepy.
Section C (8分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the blank with a proper sentence given in the
box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you
need.
A. Emotional eating results from certain feelings, such as anger or sadness.
B. Other less obvious hunger cues include a bad temper and trouble focusing.
C. But happy events can cause emotional eating, too.
D. You may find that your eating is driven by boredom.
E. These include feeling guilty or embarrassed afterward.
F. However, boredom can lead to emotional eating as well.
How to Cope with Emotional Eating
If you empty the fridge when you’re stressed or upset, that’s called emotional eating.
Emotional eating affects most people from time to time. But regularly letting your feelings
guide your food intake can affect your health.
Sadness, boredom, and other negative feelings can drive emotional eating. Emotional
eating includes eating a whole container of ice-cream after a breakup. Or eating up a bag of
potato chips when you’re home alone on a Saturday night. 59 Many people overeat at
joyous events, such as parties and weddings.
共8页,第 7页
Eating more food than your body needs can have dangerous results. People who eat for
emotional reasons often gain too much weight. This puts them at greater risk for type 2
diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, obesity, and cancer. Eating too much has
emotional consequences as well. 60
Here are some tips for you to stop emotional eating episodes and break the cycle:
Learn to recognize hunger. Next time you reach for a snack, ask yourself what’s driving it. If
you are truly hungry, you’ll notice physical symptoms, such as an empty stomach. 61
If you don’t have those signs, you probably don’t need to eat right then.
Find other interests. Finding an activity that you enjoy can increase self-confidence,
which is often poor in emotional eaters. Examples might be yoga, playing a musical
instrument, volunteering, or painting. 62 If that’s so, then a new interest can fill
your hours and make you less likely to look to food for emotional satisfaction.
