What do young people like to do in their free time If you think they are all playing video games or watching
short videos on their phones, you might be wrong. In 2026, many young people are turning to something quite
different — “grandma hobbies. “
“Grandma hobbies” is a fun name for traditional activities like needlepoint (刺绣) and gardening. These are
things that people’s grandmothers used to enjoy. But now, Gen Z (people born after 1997) are falling in love with
them.
Emma MacTaggart, 26, from the US, is a good example. She used to work long hours in banking. After work,
she would just look through her phone for hours — a habit called “getting lost in her phone.” To change this, she
and her roommates decided to try needlepoint. Soon, they became “fully engrossed.” Emma said it was so relaxing
that they spent almost all their free time making needlepoint works instead of looking at a screen.
These old hobbies help young people reduce stress and feel relaxed. When they finish a gift or a dish, they feel
proud and successful. Social media helps them become more popular. Young people share their works online and
make friends. Some even turn their hobbies into businesses. Take Anna Weare as an example, a 31-year-old
blacksmith (铁匠 ) — people now wait a year for her handmade products.
So next time you see a young person blacksmithing, don’t be surprised. It’s the newest cool thing to do!
19. What are “grandma hobbies” according to the passage
A. Modern mobile phone apps. B. Old-fashioned video games.
C. Traditional enjoyable activities. D. Business plans for old people.
20. Why did Emma MacTaggart start needlepoint
A. To make more money. B. To change her lifestyle.
C. To pass the time with friends. D. To get help from others.
21. What does the underlined word “engrossed” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. crazy. B. bored. C. tired. D. angry.
22. What does the writer mainly want to tell us
A. “Grandma hobbies” help young people relax and find pleasure.
B. All young people turn their hobbies into successful businesses.
C. Needlepoint is the most popular free-time activity for Gen Z.
D. Young people take up “grandma hobbies” only to make friends.

“On the very first day of 2024, I saw the snows of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa,” said Xu Zhuoyuan, a
17-year-old mountaineer from Hunan.
Xu climbed the tallest mountain in Africa on Jan 1. She even stood on top of Mount Qomolangma last May,
making her the youngest Chinese girl to climb to the world’s highest peak from the southern slope (斜坡).
Xu’s journey began on a trip to Sichuan four years ago. Passing by Mount Siguniang in Sichuan, she felt
drawn (被吸引) to its beauty and climbed it. She fell in love with climbing right then and there. For the next few
years, Xu did hard training.
She climbed peaks over 5,000 meters in Yunnan and Sichuan every month. She also did daily exercises like
running, swimming and rope skipping. All that hard work got her ready for the big challenges she would face on
Kilimanjaro.
During her seven-day climb, Xu faced a lot of challenges, such as thin air, high cliffs and the lack of food, but
they were not the biggest ones. Above 4,000 meters on Mount Kilimanjaro, the weather is similar to a desert, with
big temperature differences. Staying warm and avoiding heat loss were very important. Xu had to keep an eye on
the temperature and change her clothes when the temperature changed.
This climb was also a learning experience for Xu. She was climbing with Xia Boyu, the first Chinese climber
to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma with a prosthetic (假肢的) leg. “Every time I felt like giving up, just seeing
Xia was enough to encourage me,” Xu said.
Looking ahead, Xu has set great goals for herself. She plans to climb the highest peak on each of the seven
continents (大陆) and visit the North and South Poles by the time she’s 18.
27. What made Xu fall in love with mountaineering
A. Her father’s love for mountaineering. B. A trip to Mount Siguniang in Sichuan.
C. The first Chinese climber Xia’s story. D. Her interest in Mount Qomolangma.
28. What is the main challenge for Xu in climbing Kilimanjaro
A. The weather. B. High cliffs. C. Food problems. D. Thin air.
29. Which word can best describe Xu Zhuoyuan
A. Honest and patient. B. Helpful and caring.
C. Brave and determined. D. Strong and outgoing.
30. What’s the best title for the passage
A. The Highest Mountains Around the World.
B. Mountaineering Draws More Young Climbers.
