“The hound!” Holmes cried suddenly. “Come, Watson! Come!”
We ran quickly across the dark moor. A final, desperate scream broke the quiet, and then
came a dull, heavy sound. The night fell deathly silent. Holmes pressed his hands to his forehead
and stamped his feet in frustration.
“We are too late,” he said in a low voice, angrily.
Suddenly, we heard a low moan. A man was lying on the rocks. As we walked closer, we saw
the dead body of Sir Henry Baskerville. He was wearing his brown tweed suit. “Oh no!” I cried
out, feeling my blood run cold. Holmes knelt quickly beside the body, and then suddenly he began
laughing. “A beard!” he said. “This isn’t Sir Henry—it’s Selden, the escaped prisoner!”
The truth hit me at once. Sir Henry had given his old clothes to Barrymore, who had secretly
passed them to Selden. “The suit killed him,” Holmes said quietly. “Someone gave the hound Sir
Henry’s scent—probably the stolen boot from the London hotel—and it hunted the wrong man.”
第 3 页 共 8 页
Suddenly, we saw someone walking towards us. It was Stapleton. Holmes whispered: “Don’t
let him see your suspicions.”
“Dr Watson!” Stapleton asked, in surprise. “What brings you out here at this hour I heard a
strange noise and came to check on Sir Henry.” He saw the body and froze. “Is that him ”
“It’s Selden,” I said. “He’s dead.”
Stapleton tried to overcome his amazement and disappointment, “Terrible,” he murmured. “I
feared the worst for Sir Henry.”
“Sir Henry is safe,” Holmes said coldly. Stapleton then recognized him and smiled nervously.
“Mr Holmes! I didn’t know you were here. Can you solve the mystery of the Hound of the
Baskervilles ”
Holmes shrugged. “We cannot solve every mystery. Anyway, I’ll return to London tomorrow.”
With that, we left for Baskerville Hall, leaving Stapleton to walk home alone. Poor Selden lay
still on the rocks.

For the first time, primary and secondary schools in Jiangsu gave students a three-day spring
break in early April. Together with the Qingming Festival, children enjoyed a six-day holiday. The
policy aims to help students relax, enjoy nature, and reduce study stress.
Many parents welcomed the break. “Spring is the best time for children to go outside and feel
the season,” one father said. During the holiday, zoos and sports centers opened for free. Schools
gave no written homework. A company in Kunshan even gave employees three paid days off so
they could stay with their children. Tourism data showed that searches for family trips rose sharply
online. One mother shared that her son finally had time to fly kites and paint flowers in the park.
However, some parents felt troubled. Both parents have to work, but children stay at home. “We
can only ask grandparents for help or send them to daycare centers,” a working mother of two said.
She worried that leaving children alone at home could be unsafe. Other parents worried that the
第 4 页 共 8 页
extra breaks would break the rhythm of learning. They thought their kids should go to school as
usual. If there were too many breaks, students may lose the habit of studying.
To solve these problems, cities like Nanjing asked schools to provide free care services. Parents
could choose how many days of care they munity centers offered fun activities such
as calligraphy, chess, and traditional crafts. In Yangzhou, 44 community centers stayed open for
students, with seven offering full-day services. The companies paid leave policy(政策) received
wide praise. Following this example, all 13 cities in Jiangsu encouraged companies to offer
flexible(灵活的) leave for parents of school-age children.
In short, the spring break gives students a valuable chance to rest and explore. But it also
creates new challenges for working families and schools. Finding a balance between relaxation
and childcare still needs more thought and better support from both the government and employers.

B. All parents supported the break because schools gave no homework.
C. Some companies offered paid leave so parents could stay with their children.
D. 44 community centers offered full -day services in Yangzhou.
39. In paragraph 3, the underlined word "rhythm" most likely means ______.
A. the regular(有规律的)beat in a piece of music
B. the regular pattern (模式)of events
C. a repeated pattern of sounds
D. the repetition in a poem
40. Based on the article, which of the following statements best shows the writer’s opinions
A. Children have more time to fly kites and play, but parents may struggle to find safe care for
them during work hours.
B. Zoos and sports centers open for free, so families can save money and have fun together.
C. Frequent breaks may cause students to lose their study habits, which could hurt their exam
scores.
D. Some companies give paid leave to parents, which makes the break perfect for every family.

A. How to Enjoy a SixDay Holiday in Jiangsu
B. Free School Care, and Community Activities
C. Jiangsu’s First Spring Break Brings Joy and Worry

Plastic pollution is a big problem for our oceans. Every year, millions of tons of plastic waste end
up in the sea. In the water, plastic breaks into tiny pieces called microplastics. These tiny pieces
hurt fish, seabirds, and other ocean animals.
Scientists have found something surprising: many ocean bacteria(细
菌) are learning to eat plastic. Researchers found a type of bacteria that could break down PET
plastic— the kind used in water bottles. After that, scientists wanted to know if similar bacteria
lived in the ocean. To find out, a team led by Dr. Carlos Duarte collected more than 400 ocean
water samples from around the world.
Using AI and genetic testing, the researchers looked for a special enzyme (酶)called PETase.
This enzyme is like a tool that helps bacteria break down PET plastic. They found a special sign
called the M5 motif that shows an enzyme can eat plastic. And the result was amazing: nearly 80%
of the water samples had bacteria with this enzyme. These bacteria lived everywhere— from
surface water with lots of plastic to the deep sea, two kilometers below the surface.
Dr. Duarte explains: “In the ocean, where food is hard to find, microbes seem to have learned to
第 5 页 共 8 页
use plastic as a new food source.” In other words, bacteria are treating our plastic waste as food.
But there is bad news too. These bacteria break down plastic very slowly. They cannot clean up
the plastic that is already in the ocean. “By the time plastics reach the deep sea, the harm to sea life
has already been done,” says Dr. Duarte.
Still, there is hope. The enzymes found in the deep sea give scientists new ideas. Researchers
can study these enzymes and make them better in the lab. This could help us build better plastic
recycling systems on land, and maybe one day even at home.
Nature has started to fight back against plastic pollution. Now it is our turn to help.
42. Based on the passage, what can we most reasonably infer about the bacteria that can eat PET
plastic
A. They evolved (进化)this ability after humans started putting plastic into the ocean.
B. They will completely clean up all the plastic in the ocean within the next few years.
C. They were created by scientists in a laboratory and then released into the ocean.
D. They only live in surface water and cannot survive in the deep sea.
43. Which sentence should go in the empty box in paragraph 2
A. But nature may be fighting back.
B. Therefore, humans must stop using plastic.
C. However, bacteria cannot survive in the ocean.
D. As a result, the problem is getting worse every day.
44. Which of the following best describes how the passage is organized
A. Enzyme definition→ Past research→ future trend
B. Scientist’ finding→ Bacteria’s action→ Reader’s hope
C. Problem→ Experiment→Warning→Ways
D. Problem→ Discovery→ Limitation→Hope
45. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage
A. To persuade readers to stop using plastic products immediately
B. To inform readers about a new scientific discovery and its possible uses
C. To describe how plastic pollution harms different sea animals
D. To teach readers how to recycle plastic at home

It was a rainy Saturday, and Leo was bored. His family had just moved to a new town, and he
felt lonely. Without any friends yet, he sat on the sofa, his eyes glued to the screen of his game
console(控制器). The battery was running low, but he didn’t seem to mind.
“Leo, the Wi-Fi is down,” his mom called out. “And the power might go out any minute.
Why not go outside and explore the woods ”
Leo let out a heavy sigh. The thought of leaving his comfortable corner was far from
appealing(有吸引力的). However, with the game frozen on “Game Over,” he had no choice but
to take his mother’s advice. He put on his raincoat and stepped into the wet garden.
Behind the house, a path led into a small forest. As he walked along the muddy trail, his
frustration(沮丧) slowly gave way to curiosity. Suddenly, he came across a huge old oak tree
standing in the middle of a clearing. Its trunk was so wide that five people together couldn’t wrap
their arms around it. It looked like a giant guarding the secrets of nature.
Leo noticed a hole opening at the base of the tree. He bent down and went inside. To his
surprise, it was dry and warm. Looking up through the leaves, he watched the rain fall like a
curtain. It was peaceful and quiet—a perfect hiding place, away from the noise of the world.
For the first time in weeks, Leo felt a sense of calm. He realized that sometimes the best
adventures are not found on a screen, but in the real world, waiting just outside your door. He
decided that next weekend, he would bring a notebook and start drawing what he saw. Maybe he
would even make some new animal friends, like a squirrel or a bird.
From that day on, the old oak tree became his favorite spot. He learned that even when life
felt strange and difficult, there was always a quiet corner in nature to lift his spirits.
56. What did Leo’s mom ask him to do at the beginning of the story
57. Why did he take his mother’s advice
58. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to (指的是)

The Best Gift I Have Ever Received
The best gift I have ever received is a simple handmade scarf from my best friend. It is not
fancy or expensive, but it is full of warmth and sincerity, which makes it special to me.
One cold winter, I often complained that my neck felt cold on the way to school. My friend
noticed this and spent a long time learning to knit a scarf for me. Although the stitches were not
very neat, she put all her care into it. Whenever I wear it, I feel warm both in body and heart. It
keeps out the cold and reminds me of our deep friendship.
This gift means so much to me because it is a sign of true friendship. It teaches me that the
most valuable gifts are not those with high prices, but those full of love and thought. I have
learned that care and kindness are more important than expensive things. True friendship lies in
small but warm actions. I will value this scarf and our friendship forever.
