An Arkansas doctor, T. Atiq helped his former patients face the New Year with less debts(债务), voiding(使无效)more than $650,000 of unpaid medical bills for those once under his care. Each patient received a card with a personal greeting from their doctor. The note thanked each patient for trusting Dr. Atiq with their care followed by the generous surprise." If this gave them a little bit of assistance then I am grateful to have had the opportunity to do so.” the physician said.
Nearly 30 years ago, Dr. Atiq founded the Arkansas Cancer Clinic in the community of Pine Bluff to make cancer care available for the economically disadvantaged. Before its opening, Pine Bluff cancer patients traveled at least 50 miles for treatment. Dr. Atiq was clear that his patients’ needs were always his top concern一not their ability to pay.
Dr. Atiq knew all too well the huge financial strain often faced by patients. Although he wished all of his patients could simply focus on recovery from disease, many were simply not in a position to一even if they had insurance. And, most of his patients had to work while receiving treatment. Some of his patients, including elderly grandmothers, were already working two jobs before getting sick.
In the same spirit of generosity that Dr. Atiq opened his clinic, he is now closing its doors to begin a new chapter(篇章). Dr. Atiq is a full-time professor of Head and Neck Surgery at the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, part of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. His patients safely transitioned to a hospital to continue their cancer care.
Dr. Atiq feels his act of kindness was a small gesture in comparison to what his patients have given to him over the years.“The courage and resilience(适应力)that I have learned from my patients are invaluable,”he says .“The issue is their health. I am hoping that they can be cured of cancer. Or, it is controlled well to where they are living productive, happy lives with their families, their friends, and their loved ones.”

If you put a narrow straw in a glass of water, some of the water will climb up the tube.
But without help, that water will climb only a small distance. Now, some researchers have come up with a device that can make water climb higher. That could bring drinking water to communities that suffer water shortages.
Throughout the day, water evaporates(蒸发)out of a plant’ s leaves. This creates
suction(吸力)inside the cells of the plant. That suction pulls water and nutrients up through the roots to feed leaves and new growth. Such suction can lift water to the treetops. Jonathan Boreyko, who is a materials scientist at Virginia Tech, and his teammates have designed a synthetic(人造的)tree based on the law. They say that the device can help people who live in dry areas get water even from deep underground and that it might also let people in coastal areas mine fresh drinking water from the sea.
Ndidi Eyegheleme is a mechanical engineer. She grew up in a small coastal village in
Africa. Today she works with Boreyko at Virginia Tech.“ Where we lived was surrounded by salty water,” she recalled.“ As a result, we had a lot of problems getting fresh water to drink.” That ’s why she ’s so interested in making synthetic trees.“ They could help people in dry parts of the world, too,” she added. About 2.2 billion people lack reliable access to clean drinking water worldwide, the United Nations reports. Yet in some places, water may be just a few meters below their feet.
“The key to making this tree energy-efficient is to heat and evaporate only the water
inside the synthetic leaf, instead of the entire pool of water below it,” said Hadi Ghasemi, a mechanical engineer at the University of Houston in Texas.“ If you only have to heat a small amount of water, you will have a much-reduced need for energy,” he said.
8. What can we infer from Paragraph 2
A. Water safety affects our life greatly.
B. The device can help mine salt as well.
C. The researchers were inspired by plants.
D. Trees help a lot in environmental protection.
9. What fired Ndidi’ s enthusiasm for joining Boreyko’ s project
A. Her work experience with the UN.
B. Food safety problems in dry areas.
C. Her previous poor living environment.
D. Environmental problems in the world.
10. How can the synthetic tree be energy-efficient according to Hadi
A. By using well-grown leaves.
B. By making leaf water fully boiled.
C. By using clean energy to heat water.
D. By avoiding heating unnecessary water .
11. What would be the best title for the text
A. A new study reveals the secrets of plants
B. An invention helps tap underground water
C. Trees play a role in fighting climate change
D. Water shortage is becoming a worldwide problem
D
Could it be that music, art, literature, and other creative works that add so much richness to our lives are the products of a misfiring brain That’ s basically the claim of a new study in Nature Neuroscience.
According to the researchers, the job of the brain is to make“safe”decisions from a strategic aspect. Creative thinking---“non-greedy”thinking一on the other hand, is a matter of synthesizing(综合)available information in a new way, not necessarily the most practical one. The curiosity that leads to creative thinking has been assumed to be a largely reasonable process of examining a range of unknowns to identify choices that lead to pleasing or expressive outcomes. Nope, say the researchers of the study. The brain reaches unusual conclusions because it’ s malfunctioning(机能失常). And music, art, literature come from brain noise.
For the study, lead researcher Valentin Wyatt and colleagues had a hundred people play a slot machine game that offered them a choice of two symbols, one of which proved to be more likely to earn them a monetary reward. As they played, the researchers monitored their brains with MRI scans. Each time they chose wrong by selecting the other symbol, the part of the brain associated with decision-making lit up, indicating a failure to successfully compute the correct answer.“ Our participants have the impression of choosing the best symbol and not the most uncertain, but they do it on the basis of wrong information resulting from errors of reasoning,” says Wyatt.
Wyatt notes that not all such mistakes are bad, citing Christopher Columbus’ accidental discovery of the Western Hemisphere, which was caused by a brain blip(短暂性问题). A better example would be the arts, including comedy. These are “mistakes” we don’ t want to do without.
While there’ s clearly a benefit of the brain being able to come up with solutions that are likely to produce the most practically positive outcomes, there’ s no denying that lots of these “errors”absolutely delight us.
12. How does the author introduce the topic of the text
A. By giving a definition. B. By showing an example.
C. By putting forward a guess. D. By referring to relevant data.
13. What did the study in Nature Neuroscience find
A. Inspiration for the arts originates from temporary curiosity.
B. Creative thinking comes from mistakes in brains ’ working.
C. Curiosity contributes to a reasonable selection of unknowns.
D. Creative thinking analyzes available information in practical ways.
14. Which aspect of the study does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. Its theoretical basis. B. Its experimental process.
C. Its practical significance. D. Its participants’ backgrounds.
15. What is the author’ s attitude towards brains’“errors "
A. Positive. B. Objective. C. Critical. D. Indiferent.
