“Every life is a boat, the dream is the boat sail.” Every child has a dream of what they want to be. When Renee Butts was little, her dream was to become a volunteer fire fighter because her father was one. Sadly, when she was 14, her beloved father died and she was never able to do volunteer work with him. However, Renee’s story didn’t end there. She was determined and never gave up, which makes for a good firefighter.
Now Renee is a member of the Carmel Fire Department, where she is required to be an Emergency Medical Technician. She should also be ready to deal with any emergency, like fighting a fire, dealing with a car accident or helping someone who’s sick. Sometimes she is in the driver’s seat or using the water pump. Renee works nine to eleven days a month on 24-hour shifts. She also has a family to care for, as her husband is also a busy fire fighter. Dealing with housework and working so much can show her great determination.
When I asked Renee what the best part of her job was, she replied, “Helping people and saving lives.” I think that shows signs of being a true hero. She’s always willing to do anything for anyone in need. Renee says that her job is frightening at times, but extremely exciting. “The worst part of my job is that I see death. Actually, sometimes people die in the accident, for which I am very sorry.” With 140 people in her station, Renee is one of the only three women, but that doesn’t bother her. She says everyone can get a fair shot and do the same jobs.
I was inspired by this because I knew I would be very scared to do her job and didn’t know if I could handle seeing people die. We would never live without people like her who have the courage to risk their lives. Renee’s determination rubs off on me and makes me believe that I can do anything.
4. What happened to Renee when she was fourteen

C. Her father passed away. D. Her dream to be a firefighter came true.
5. Why does the author believe Renee Butts is a true hero

6. How does Renee think of her job
A. Simple and pleasant. B. Frightening but exciting.
C. Relaxing and comfortable. D. Challenging but promising.
7. What is the main idea of the last paragraph

Sweden is so good at recycling that, for several years, it has imported (进口) rubbish from other countries so that its recycling plants can function smoothly. Less than 1 percent of Swedish household waste was sent to landfills (垃圾填埋场) last year or any since 2011.
We can only dream of such an effective system in the UK, which is new, but we end up paying expensive transport costs to send rubbish to be recycled overseas rather than paying fines to send it to landfills under the Landfill Tax of 1996.
Why are we sending waste to Sweden Their system is so far ahead because of a culture of looking after the environment. Sweden was one of the first countries to place a heavy tax on fossil fuels (化石燃料) in 1991 and now sources almost half its electricity from renewables.
“In Sweden people are quite crazy about being out in nature and they have a clear idea of what needs to be done on nature and environmental problems. We worked on communications for a long time to make people not throw things outdoors so that we can recycle and use,” says Anria-Carin Gripwall, director of communications for Avfall Serve, the Swedish Waste Management’s recycling association.
Over time, Sweden has carried out a national recycling policy so that even though private companies undertake most of the business of importing and burning waste, the energy goes into a national heating network to heat homes through the cold Swedish winter. “That’s a key reason that we have this district network, so we can use the heating from the waste plants. In the southern part of Europe they don’t use the heating from the waste; it just goes out of the chimney. Here we use it as a replacement for fossil fuel,” M. Gripwall says.
8. Why has Sweden been importing rubbish from abroad in the past few years
A. To try out its recycling system. B. To keep its recycling plants running.
C. To stop rubbish ending up in landfills. D. To make greater profits from rubbish.
9. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “sources” in paragraph 3
A. Consumes. B. Saves. C. Obtains. D. Improves.
10. How does Sweden handle the heating from the waste plants
A. By making use of it to heat homes. B. By exchanging it for fossil fuels.
C. By selling it to other countries. D. By sending it out from the chimney.
11. What conclusion can be drawn from the text
A. Swedish rarely get close to nature.
B. Swedish recycling system has been applied globally.
C. Waste is imported only by the Swedish government.
D. Swedish have a strong environmental awareness.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. D

Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly important role in the restoration of Dunhuang murals (壁画). Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, located in Gansu Province, are home to more than 45,000 square meters of murals, some of which date back over 1,600 years. However, these precious artworks are facing threats from natural aging, climate change, and human activities.
A team of researchers from Tsinghua University has developed an AI-based system to assist in mural restoration. The system first uses high-resolution cameras to capture detailed images of the murals. Then, AI algorithms analyze the images to identify damaged areas, such as cracks, fading, and peeling. “AI can quickly and accurately detect even the smallest damages that are difficult for human eyes to spot,” said Professor Chen, the leader of the research team.
After identifying the damaged areas, the AI system provides restoration suggestions based on historical data and the style of the murals. For example, if a color has faded, the AI can recommend the most appropriate color to match the original. The system also helps restorers simulate the restoration effect before actual work begins, which reduces the risk of mistakes.
“The AI system has greatly improved the efficiency and accuracy of mural restoration,” Professor Chen said. “What used to take restorers months to complete can now be done in a few weeks with the help of AI.” However, Professor Chen also pointed out that AI is only an assistant tool. “Human restorers still play a crucial role in making final decisions, as restoration requires not only technical skills but also a deep understanding of the cultural and historical background of the murals.”
Some experts are concerned about the over-reliance on AI in cultural heritage restoration. “We should not let AI replace human judgment,” said Dr. Li, a cultural heritage expert. “The value of cultural heritage lies not only in its appearance but also in the human emotions and craftsmanship behind it.”
12. What is the main threat to Dunhuang murals mentioned in the text
A. Lack of research funds. B. Insufficient restoration technology.
C. Natural aging and human activities. D. Lack of professional restorers.
13. What is the first step of the AI-based restoration system
A. Analyzing the damaged areas. B. Capturing detailed images of the murals.
C. Providing restoration suggestions. D. Simulating the restoration effect.
14. Why is human involvement still crucial in mural restoration
A. AI cannot detect small damages.
B. AI is too expensive to use widely.
C. Restoration requires cultural and historical understanding.
D. Human restorers work faster than AI.
15. What is Dr. Li’s attitude towards the use of AI in mural restoration
A. Fully supportive. B. Strongly opposed. C. Cautious. D. Indifferent.

For me, the most cherished thing was a pocket watch, a gift from my father for my 12th birthday. I took the watch in my hands, feeling its weight and the smoothness of the metal. From that day on. I carried it with me everywhere, not just as a timepiece but as a connection with my father.
A few months later, my father’s birthday was approaching. I wanted to give him something truly special, something that would show him how much loved and appreciated him, just as my father had shown his love for me with the watch.
One day, while walking through a local market. I spotted (看见) a handmade leather wallet in a small stand. It was a rich, deep brown color, and the craftsmanship was exquisite (精美的). The edges were neatly stitched (缝), and there were subtle patterns impressed on the surface. I knew instantly that my father would love it.
I asked the vendor (小贩) about the price. My heart sank when I heard the amount; it was far more than the money I had saved from my allowance (津贴). The vendor, noticing my disappointment, said, “Young man, if you’re really set on this wallet, I can work out a payment plan with you.” I brightened up immediately.
He took out a piece of paper and carefully wrote down the details of my name and wallet. I handed over the five dollars I had, which mean sacrificing my usual weekend treats, but I didn’t hesitate. After that, l started doing odd jobs around the neighborhood. I mowed lawns for our neighbors, helped carry groceries for the elderly, and did small tasks for friends. Every bit of money I earned, I saved.
Week after week, I brought the money I’d earned to the market vendor. He always greeted me with a kind smile and recorded each payment.

【答案】
The day before my father’s birthday, I paid the last two cents (美分). The vendor smiled warmly as he handed me the wallet, now wrapped in a simple but elegant paper. I clutched it tightly, feeling a mix of excitement and relief. Knowing that I had finally fulfilled my promise, I hurried home, imagining how happy my father would be when he saw the gift. It was not just a wallet; it was a symbol of my love and gratitude, which I had saved and worked hard for.
On his birthday, as he opened the gift, my father paused (停顿). His eyes widened in surprise, and then a broad smile spread across his face. “This is beautiful,” he said, running his fingers over the leather. “I can tell how much effort you put into this.” I smiled proudly, explaining how I had saved up and worked odd jobs to afford it. He hugged me tightly, whispering, “This is the best gift I’ve ever received, because it shows how much you care.” In that moment, I knew the love between us was truly priceless.
