Reading
Daniel has found an article about UNICEF. Read it and answer the questions below.
UNICEF: for every child, everywhere
UNICEF is part of the United Nations. During World War II, many schools and homes were destroyed, and many children suffered. UNICEF was set up in 1946 by the UN to help children and young people in difficult situations.
Now UNICEF is a powerful champion of children's rights around the world. It works in over 190 countries and areas. It provides clean water and food education and healthcare to children. Moreover, UNICEF acts quickly in emergency situations and makes sure that children get help in time. Besides, it works closely with governments to develop programmes to help and protect children.
Through its great efforts, UNICEF is making great progress to create a better world for children.
1. What does UNICEF provide to children
2. What else do you think UNICEF can do to help children around the world
It provides clean water and food, education and healthcare to children.
I think UNICEF can also focus on mental health. Many children go through very stressful situations like wars or natural disasters. UNICEF can provide more programmes and trainings to help children with their feelings and mental well-being.
1. Compare the work UNICEF did in the past (when it was set up) and now. What stays the same and what changes
Read the article again answer the following questions.
UNICEF was set up in 1946 by the UN to help children and young people in difficult situations. Today it still acts quickly in emergency situations and makes sure that children get help in time.
Today it works in over 190 countries and areas, giving long-term help like providing clean water and food, education and healthcare.
2. How does it show its “power” according to the article
3. What can we teenagers do to support UNICEF’s work
It shows “power” by working in over 190 countries and areas, providing help including clean water and food, education and healthcare. Besides, it works closely with governments to develop programmes to help and protect children.
As teenagers, we can support UNICEF by raising awareness about children’s issues among our peers and in our communities. We can also help by raising money through school activities, or volunteering our time for related events.
UNICEF provides basic education for poor children in many countries.
UNICEF provides children in poor areas with clean water and food.
People can help by donating money or working as a volunteer.
UNICEF raises money by selling cards and presents as well as organizing other activities.
During the fast spread of a virus, UNICEF works with the WHO to protect children.
Daniel is listening to a podcast about UNICEF. Listen with him and put the sentences in the correct order. Write the numbers 1–5 in the boxes.
