The Chinese government offers many different volunteer programmes around the country. The “Go West” Programme is one of them. It asks college students to volunteer in China’s western areas. This programme began in 2003 and has grown in popularity. Every year, more and more students sign up for this programme and volunteer for roles in education, health and other fields. It is amazing to see that many volunteers choose to stay in western China.
Yang Yu, a student from a university in Nanjing, taught Chemistry at a high school in a small town in Qinghai Province. He was happy to help the students there. He said, “Programmes like this are very meaningful. I’ve recommended it to lots of other college students.”
Millie found an article about this volunteer programme.

Read the letter from the Students' Union asking for people’s help.
Dear all,
Xiao Wei, one of our Grade 9 students, needs our help!
Xiao Wei is suffering from a serious blood disease and has been absent from school since last month. A necessary operation would save him, but it costs over 300,000 yuan.
Xiao Wei's parents are both factory workers. They cannot afford such an expensive operation. Without this operation, Xiao's life would be at risk.
Let's come together to support Xiao Wei. We are organizing a charity sale to raise money next Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the school playground.
Join us to show Xiao Wei that he is not alone. If all of us give a helping hand, we can save Xiao Wei!

Dear all,
South Primary School needs our help!
The school is in the eastern suburbs of our city. There are about 120 students but only five teachers at the school. Many students have to look after themselves after school. Their parents are usually busy making a living and have no time to take care of their children. I believe we should do something to help the students there.
First, we can visit the school regularly. The students will be very happy to see us. We can help them with their homework. We can also play with them after school.
Second, we can help by donating some books. Many students there have nothing to do when they go home. We can donate different kinds of books so they can bring them home to read.
I hope all of you will join our activities. Thank you for your support!
Daniel
