School Notice
Dear students and parents,
Growing up is a key period for students to develop good habits and a sense of responsibility. To help students grow up healthily, our school will hold a series of activities and put forward some suggestions. Please read carefully and follow them.
First, students should learn to be independent. Try to finish homework by yourselves and help parents do housework at home, such as cleaning rooms, washing dishes and folding clothes. This helps develop a sense of responsibility.
Second, communicate more with your parents and teachers. When you meet difficulties in study or life, don't keep them to yourselves. Talk to your parents or teachers, and they will give you help and guidance.
Third, take part in after-school activities. Our school will hold a “Growing Up” speech contest on May 15th. Students who are interested can sign up at the teacher's office before May 10th. The contest helps students express their feelings about growing up.
We hope all students can grow up happily and become responsible people. If you have any questions, please call the school office at 87654321.

Phileas Fogg was a rich English gentleman, who lived a very regular life. One day, he made a bet with his friends at the club: he could travel around the world in eighty days. All his friends thought it was impossible, but Mr Fogg was sure he could do it. That same evening, he left London with his servant Passepartout, and started their amazing journey.
______ They took the train to France, then a ship to India. In India, they saved a beautiful young woman named Aouda, who was going to be killed in a local tradition. Aouda joined them on their journey, and they became good friends.
During the trip, they met many difficulties. There was a terrible storm on the sea when they were travelling to Hong Kong. The ship was almost broken, and they lost a lot of time. The biggest trouble was Detective Fix. Fix followed them all the way because he thought Mr Fogg was a bank robber, and he followed them all around the world, trying to arrest them.
But Mr Fogg never gave up. He always found a way to solve the problems. When the railway stopped in the middle of India, he bought an elephant to continue the trip. When they missed the ship to Japan, he hired a small boat to get there. He cared more about keeping his promise to his friends, and making sure his travelling companions were safe.
After many adventures, Mr Fogg and his friends finally returned to London. They thought they had missed the deadline, but later they found out they had arrived one day earlier, because they had travelled east around the world. Mr Fogg won the bet, and he also found true love with Aouda.

Did you take part in any tree-planting activities this past March 12 Or maybe you went to check out the little tree you planted a few years ago Standing beside it, you might have been amazed at how much it has changed. It's really great to watch a tree grow year by year. Even the tallest ones of them grow from tiny seeds (种子). Have you ever wondered how
A full-grown tree may drop hundreds or even thousands of seeds a year. Inside each seed is something called an embryo(胚). Think of it as a small group of cells (细胞). These cells are ready to form roots, stems (茎), and first leaves.
Once the covering around the seed gets wet, the embryo cells, which have been patiently waiting, suddenly come to life. They start to grow and break out. This is called germination. First, the roots develop and push out and down into the soil. This makes sure the new plant can get water from the soil. Then the stem grows up and makes the first leaves. As these leaves produce “food” in the sunlight, the plant gets the energy to grow more new leaves.
Let's imagine you drive a nail (钉子) into a tree at one metre above the ground. What will you see when you come back in ten years The tree will be much taller, but the nail will still be only one metre above the ground. That's because trees get taller by growing upwards from the top. At the same time, their trunk gets thicker by growing outwards. It is like the tree has two different ways of growing at the same time. The upward growth is like a race towards the sky, reaching for more sunlight, while the outward growth of the trunk is like adding more and more rings of protection and support.
As trees get older, they continue to grow taller and thicker. Guess how tall the world's tallest living tree is Over 110 metres! That's as tall as a 30-floor building! Isn't it amazing
46. Which one of the pictures shows the stage of germination
47. Why does the writer use the example of driving a nail into a tree in Paragraph 4
A. To explain why people put nails in trees.
B. To help readers understand how trees grow taller.
C. To show that nails don't stop trees from growing.
D. To teach readers a way to record the growth of trees.
48. If a tree trunk gets thicker over time, what will happen to a metal ring (金属环) put around the bottom of the trunk after 10 years
A. The metal ring will go into the soil.
B. The metal ring will be higher off the ground.
C. The metal ring will move up and down along the trunk.
D. The metal ring will stay at the same height but may embed (嵌入) in the tree.
49. From the article, we can find the answer to the question “______”
①How do trees get water from the soil
②Why does a nail in a tree trunk stay at the same height over time
③How many seeds does a full-grown tree drop in its lifetime
④How tall can the tallest trees in the world grow
⑤How long does a seed take to grow leaves
A. ①③④ B. ①②③ C. ②④⑤ D. ①②④

Tracking (跟踪) some 65,000 miles across 45 countries, Christopher Schacht's international bestseller Around the World on 50 Bucks (元) was translated into English by Janet Gesme.
As a translator, musician and mother of two, Janet Gesme speaks English, German, Russian, and Spanish. She fully understands Christopher's intentions (意图) and has managed to express each idea in his voice. We recently had the chance to interview Gesme who provided us with some fantastic insights.
How does a US/English-speaking reader differ from a European/German-speaking one
The German-speaking readers are usually more patient and willing to read longer texts for a better understanding of an idea.
But that is not the case with Christopher Schacht's book. He writes quick, exciting, short stories that make you laugh and make your eyes pop out in surprise. There was no need to change the style: his writing is exactly what an English-speaking reader loves.
What were the challenges or joys of translating Around the World on 50 Bucks
First, we were on a short timeline, so I needed to translate the whole book in three months. That meant a lot of late nights. The second challenge was Christopher's sense of humour. Some of his humour is based on German culture that is very hard to translate.
This leads into the joys as well. Christopher and I communicated online weekly while translating the book. We brainstormed together on how to find English equivalents (对应词) for the German style of humour.
One of the themes of this book is communicating through barriers. From your point of view, how would someone interested in travelling best learn a new language in a strange place
Christopher has great tips for this in the book: Use apps and dictionaries to learn as many words ahead of time as possible. When travelling, you often have to wait a lot. This is the perfect time to learn. Then talk to people. You will make mistakes and it will be hard, but it is helpful and you'll gain a lot.
