With careful urban planning, some former industrial centers are moving toward a more modern,
and in some cases, sustainable future after decades in decline.
Lake Charles, Louisiana
This city hosts more than 75 festivals annually, including Mardi Gras. The 1911 Historic City
Hall is the centerpiece of a lively arts scene, housing galleries and hosting exhibitions from local
artists. Hikers often spot crocodiles along the Creole Nature Trail. Birders favor Sam Houston Jones
State Park to see owls and ospreys.
St. Louis, Missouri
From the Gateway Arch to the City Museum, adventures await in St. Louis. The newly rebuilt
Powell Hall hosts classical, jazz and blues concerts every day. Forest Park is the city’s beloved
backyard and home to the St. Louis Art Museum, Missouri History Museum, and St. Louis Zoo. All
are free. The St. Louis’ culinary scene, from BBQ to fine dining, is steadily gaining national
attention. Coming hungry and curious, you’ll leave with a whole new appreciation for what this city
has to offer!
Birmingham, Alabama
Once one of the largest steel factories in the US, Sloss Furnaces is now a hands-on museum and
arts venue. Green spaces, including the Botanical Gardens and Vulcan Park, are found throughout the
city. Five Points South is home to trendy restaurants and shops. The city’s role in the fight for
equality comes to life at the Civil Rights National Monument and Institute.
Detroit, Michigan
Constant construction signals the motor city’s return to glory (繁荣). Guests can check in at a
variety of new hotels, including the breathtaking Roost Detroit, part of a $400 million redevelopment
of the historic Book Tower. Visitors to the Motown Museum can pay a visit to Hitsville USA, where

I sat in my teacher's office, red-faced and anxious, speaking faster than I could control: the
stress, the sense of not belonging, the suspicion thatI was not cut out for academic work. Instead of
being disappointed, my teacher listened patiently, and calmly replied, “You are here to learn to ride a
bicycle, not to invent one.” That sentence landed softly, but it cracked (砸开) something open.
As a first-generation university graduate, I had always felt the pressure to lead the way. To get
into graduate school, I focused on presenting myself not as a trainee ready to learn, but as an already
successful, skillful researcher. I had internalized this mindset.
But after starting my PhD, I was hit by waves of academic challenges: I barely passed my
first-year classes. My research group was full of productive members who were publishing quality
papers steadily, while my attempts to generate fresh, innovative ideas hit one wall after another. I felt
I was running an endless race with a late start, left far behind. Ihesitated to share my struggles with
my teaeher at
first. I didn't want him to see me as a failure. But after months of quietly carrying that weight, I
finally spoke up.
His words redefined graduate school for me. Irealized that my focus on pursuing productivity
and groundbreaking projects was misguided. The intense competition had distracted (使分心 ) me
from the real reason I became a PhD candidate: to learn how to do research and how to develop.
Accepting that mindset, I began to lean more on my teacher and senior team members, which
helped me make progress. I worried less about publishing and productivity, and every project,
whether it failed or succeeded, became a meaningful step forward. Two years later, I completed my
PhD and mastered my riding skills while also gradually gathering the tools to invent my own bicycle.
Now, I'm about to establish my own research group. Pll surely remind my trainees that their job, first
and foremost, is to learn how to ride.

The door-in-the-face (DITF)technique is a persuas on skill often used 现 象 分 析 类 by
salespeople. A person using this 说明文 一 technique first makes one larger requestthat they
consider likely to get rejected. Onee that door gets closed to them, they follow it up with a smaller
request, asking for what they really want. In general,DITF is potent in situations where the requests
are for a good cause and there's a logical connection between the requests. It might not work if it is a
request making the target feel offended or pressured, or having nothing to do with the following one.
To explore the trick, a team of researchers led by Oliver Genschow at the University of Cologne
conducted a study. In the study, the research team tested 391 passersby who walked alone across
campus. In the smaller-request-only condition, passersby were asked to volunteer as a guide in a
zoo for 2 hours, and 34 percent of the passersby agreed to take up the job. In the large-then-small
request condition, passersby were asked to work as an unpaid animal caretaker in a zoo for 2 hours a
week for at least 2 years. If the person said no, the researcher asked if they would work as a
volunteer guide in the zoo for 2 hours. In this condition, 51 percent of the passersby agreed. The
agreement rate increased by 50percent!
Some say it's because people have feelings of guilt after refusing the first request. In essence,
the targets see the second request as compromise (折中 ). Thanks to the universal law of mutual
benefit, which says when others do something good for you, it should be repaid, the targets feel
somewhat duty-bound to agree to the second request, according to the researchers. They see that
others take a step back and feel they should do so, too.
“While this method comes into play in fields like political elections and negotiations beyond the
retail(零售) business, it is not without risks,” OliverGenschow noted. “ If an individual feels that a
request is unreasonable, they may become less agreeable to subsequent offers.”
28. What does the underlined word“potent ” mean in the first paragraph
A. Common. B. Obvious.
C. Effective. D. Flexible.
29. How did the research team explore DITF in their study
A. By predicting responses to requests.
B. By asking professionals questions.
C. By surveying the same people twice.
D. By comparing two request strategies.30. Why did the agreement rate improve according to
the researchers
A. People tend to return kindness.
B. People feel guilty at the refusal.
C. Rejecting others further is hard.
D. The second request is reasonable.
31. What do Oliver Genschow's words imply aboutDITF
A. Its expansion is at risk.
B. It may have opposite effects.
C. Its future usage is uncertain.
D. It suits the business field best.

MIT scientists have created a kind of high-tech“wrap” capable of collecting safe drinking water
directly from the air even in extreme environments.
The water harvester is made from hydrogel(水凝胶) that is wrapped between two layers of glass.
At night, the device absorbs water vapor (蒸气 ) from the atmosphere. During the day, the vapor
becomes water on the glass thanks to a coating that keeps the glass cool. The liquid water then flows
down the glass and is collected in a system of tubes. The hydrogel comes in a special shape —— a
series of round roofs with a circular base, which are like a sheet of wrap that expands when
absorbing water vapor. The shape increases the material's surface area, which increases the amount
of vapor it can hold. This process requires no electricity, enhancing its sustainability and suitability.
Scientists tested the new device for a week inDeath Valley, the hottest and driest place in
NorthAmerica. It could even generate about 1/4 to 2/3 of a cup of water(57 ml-161.5m l) every day.
In other areas, the device should generate more. One challenge with the hydrogel had been the
leakage of harmful salts into the collected water, but the team overcame this by using a salt stabilizer,
reducing harmful salt leakage to concentrations well below safety limits for groundwater.
While one panel might not produce enough water to sustain an entire household, it doesn't take
up mueh space, which means multiple panels eould be set up for a single household. The scientists
estimate that eight panels could be enough to supply a housebold in places where there isn't easy
access to safe drinking pared to the costs of bottled
water, the device could pay for itself in less than a month and last at least one year.
The new water harvester is a major step towards providing safe, accessible drinking water for
people across the globe, and works wherever you may find water vapor in the air. The team plans to
test the panels in more resource-limited environments to learn more about the device's performance
under different conditions.
32. What determines the amount of the hydrogel's water harvest
A. The quality of the cool coating.
B. The number of the glass layers.
C. The specially designed structure.
D. The vapor-absorbing frequency.
33. What advantage of the device is stressed in paragraph 3
A. It is sustainable. B. It is high-tech.
C. It is productive. D. It is heat-resistant.
34. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The device's potential for home use.
B. The device's low cost for households.
C. The panel's suitability for tiny spaces.
D. The panel's capacity for water supply.
35. What is the team's next focus concerning the device
A. Doing global tests on it.
B. Exploring its adaptability.
C. Enhancing its effectiveness.
D. Introducing it to other fields.
第二节 (共 5小题;每小题 2.5分,满分 12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余
选项。
You enter the world where you are bound to encounter adversity (逆境). 36 However,it's the
one you have to engage in, believing that you can get to the other side. You need strategies that can
help you pull through more easily.
Finding role models is definitely constructive. It's always comforting to know that someone else
has experienced the same challenge you have. It's even more helpful to know that they got through it,
and how. 37 No matter who they are, they provide the inspiration and proof that it's possible to
overcome adversity.
Humans are built for social connections;individuals would suffer mentally and physically
without them. Therefore, you should seek social support actively. A positive social connection
shores up self- respect, lowers blood pressure and benefits the heart. 38 Providing support for
others provides a sense of purpose and reduces your own discomfort.
Viktor Frankl wrote in Man's Search forMeaning,“39 ” It's not circumstances but
the lack of a sense of purpose that makes life unbearable. Having a sense of purpose and sticking to
values that support it provide the structure for something positive. It is a motivational force that
operates even in the face of difficulties, pulling people forward.
40
There is another way, which the scientist Richard Davidson calls the“quiet path”:Instead of
defeating unhappiness, build the skills of well- being, and make friends with your mind. Then, when
adversity strikes, recovery is fast. That's important because fast recovery prevents people from
always thinking about the negative past.
A. searching for purpose takes effort.
B. Therefore, understanding them is challenging.
C. In the face of adversity, being tough is an option.
D. But remember, giving is just as important as getting.
E. Suffering ceases to be suffering when it finds a meaning.
F. They could be people in the flesh, or fictional characters.
G. Undoubtedly, getting through adversity is typically a struggle.

67.My wife was away for a few days and I hated the thought of leaving my new dog Honey alone.
“Come on, Honey. Let’s go.” She jumped into the car and settled down in the passenger seat. I got
behind the wheel and started the car.
We live in a remote area up in the hills, surrounded by many tall trees. You have to drive up
the mountain slowly to get to our driveway, which is barely wide enough for one car.
I turned around my car and backed up slowly, just then, a flash of afternoon sunlight blinded
me. I put my hand up to protect my eyes. I felt a sudden sharp movement as the left back wheel of
the car slipped in the soft soil, and it rolled. I hadn’t put on my seat belt yet and I fell downwards
inside the car and the car hit the ground several times as it turned over down the valley, Tree
branches broke with great sharp noise. The car rolled faster, four, five, six, … , until it came to a
complete stop. We landed upside down and I got stuck completely in the car. I looked over to find
Honey. She was still in the passenger seat and fortunately, she was okay.
“Sorry, girl,” I took a deep breath. I tried to see if I could remove myself from behind the
wheel. I felt a burning pain in my chest and something was wrong with my left leg. I cried out from
the pain. I grabbed my cellphone and dialed 911. Just as I had feared, I couldn’t get a signal at the
bottom of the valley.
I figured we were at least 50 feet down. Robin, my closest neighbor, had his own driveway,
living a mile uphill from me. There was no reason he or anyone else would drive to my house. And
even if someone did, they wouldn’t see the damaged car here.
Painfully, I managed to reach over and pick Honey up. I gently gave her a pat. “Go home,
baby.” She jumped to the ground and raced up the side of the valley.

Say No to Playing Balls in Teaching Buildings
Good morning, everyone! Recently, I have noticed an uncivilized phenomenon that some
classmates are playing balls casually in our teaching buildings.
During breaks, they often chase and kick balls in narrow corridors, with balls often bumping
into doors, windows or even someone nearby. Such behavior is both disruptive and potentially
dangerous. It not only makes the corridors messy but also poses safety risks and may lead to damage
to school facilities.
Playing balls is fun, but we should choose the playground instead. I appeal to everyone to stop
playing balls in our teaching buildings. It’s our shared responsibility to respect others and care for
our campus. Together, let’s keep our teaching buildings safe and orderly.
Thank you!
67.
I sat there for hours. The pain in my chest and leg was unbearable. I closed my eyes, trying to
ignore the pain and conserve my energy. Time seemed to stand still as I waited, hoping for a miracle.
Just then, I heard a familiar bark. It was Honey! She had returned, but where was she I craned my
neck to see her standing at the top of the valley, barking loudly. She was trying to get someone’s
attention. My heart soared with hope. Maybe she could lead someone to me.
Bang! The noise woke me up; I could recognize it was my neighbor, Robin! “Help!” I
screamed. “I’m here! Down in the valley!” Robin peered over the edge and his eyes widened in
horror at the sight of my overturned car. “Don’t worry, I’ll get help!” he yelled before rushing back
to his house. Robin had called the emergency services and they were finally able to locate me thanks
to Honey’s persistent barking. As the paramedics carefully extracted me from the wreckage, I clung
to Honey, tears streaming down my face. I knew I had her to thank for my rescue. She had saved my
life.
