It's hard to imagine a place that's more extreme(极端的) than Death Valley in California and Nevada. Death Valley is the hottest and the driest place in North America. Yet Death Valley is full of life.
Death Valley isn't an easy place to live. It gets less than two inches of rain a year, so there isn't much water. It's hot too. In July, temperatures often rise to over 46 °C. The ground is mostly sand and rocks. There is even a dried-up lake that has turned into salt crystals(结晶).
Although the weather condition in Death Valley is terrible, it is still filled with lives.Nothing can stop plants and animals from making it their home. People have found more than 1,000types of plants there. It also has 51 types of mammals(哺乳动物),36 kinds of reptiles(爬行动物),6 types of fish, and more than 300 kinds of birds. The animals aren't all small, either. There are big ones like bighorn sheep, mountain lions, and mule deer.
Water is the biggest challenge for anything that lives in Death Valley. Some plants have roots that go fifty feet under the ground to find water. Kangaroo rats get the water they need from the seeds(种子) of desert sunflowers. Tiny pupfish can live in water that is 32 °C and five times as salty as the ocean!

The Sahara Desert is the largest hot desert in the world. It covers about 9,200,000 square kilometers in North Africa. How do you read that number It is “nine million two hundred thousand square kilometers”. That is much larger than the United States.
The Sahara is also one of the driest and hottest places on Earth. In summer, the temperature can reach over 50°C. That is hotter than most other places. However, at night, it can become very cold — sometimes even below 0°C. So the Sahara has a bigger temperature difference between day and night than many other deserts.
On the other hand, the Dead Sea is not a sea — it is a salt lake. It is the lowest point on Earth’s land, at about 430 meters below sea level (read: four hundred thirty meters). The water in the Dead Sea is much saltier than ocean water. In fact, it is the saltiest body of water in the world. Because of that, people can float easily without swimming.
Although the Sahara is the largest hot desert, the coldest desert on Earth is Antarctica. Antarctica is even larger than the Sahara, but it is much colder. The lowest temperature ever recorded there was -89.2°C (minus eighty-nine point two degrees Celsius).
So when we talk about “the most” or “the largest”, different places hold different records. Geography is full of amazing numbers and comparisons.
( )6. How large is the Sahara Desert
A. 9.2 million square kilometers. B. 9.2 thousand square kilometers.
C. 92 million square kilometers. D. 920 thousand square kilometers.

C. Because it is the lowest place. D. Because the water is very salty.
( )9. Which desert is larger, the Sahara or Antarctica
A. The Sahara. B.They are the same size.
C.Antarctica. D. It is not mentioned.
( )10. What does the writer want to show in the last paragraph
A. The Sahara is the best desert.
B. The Dead Sea is not a real sea.
C. Different places have different “most” records.
D. Antarctica is too cold for people.
