Four facts about humanitarian aid you need to know
Global needs rise as governments cut humanitarian aid greatly. Now is the time to address poverty, conflict and unrest. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) urges governments to
rethink and invest in aid. This funding shortfall has become the IRC’s greatest obstacle. Here are four facts that show why humanitarian aid matters and why continued support is critical.
1. Aid cuts cost lives: Millions of people are at risk as some major countries reduce aid for the humanitarian crises. For people facing war, homelessness, hunger or disease, aid means access
to food, clean water, medical care and shelter.
2. Diseases have been wiped out globally thanks to aid: Humanitarian aid has greatly
improved global health. In the last 30 years, death rates for children under five have dropped by
half. Smallpox (天花) has been rooted out, and polio (小儿麻痹症) cases have dropped by 99% .
Polio cases since 1980 (WHO Data, 1980 - 2025)
Year Reported Cases
1980 400,000
1985 300,000
1990 233,000
1995 60.000
2000 4,000
2005 2.033
2010 1,352
2015 74
2020 53
2025 38
3. Humanitarian aid accounts for only a small part of government spending: Quite a few
people are concerned that it takes up a somewhat large share of the national budget-actually less
than 1% in most countries. Though the top donor in total, the U. S. gives only 0.24% of its budget (vs. Norway’s 1% + ), yet these small investments save lives.
4. The largest humanitarian crisis on record is happening: After two years of civil war,
Sudan is now in the world’s largest humanitarian crisis since records began. Over 30.4 million are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
Stand with the IRC as we are ensuring the people affected by crisis receive the support they need to survive and rebuild.
1 .What is the IRC’s biggest challenge
A .The spread of diseases. B .Public concern on aid budget.
C .Governments’ cuts in aid. D .War-caused humanitarian crises.
2 .Which period saw the largest drop in reported polio cases
A .1980 - 1985. B .1985 - 1990. C .1990 - 1995. D .1995 - 2000.
3 .What is the main purpose of the text
A .To introduce the IRC’s basic work. B .To stress the value of humanitarian aid.
C .To show global health improvements. D .To describe Sudan’s humanitarian crisis.

The district championship game between Academy and Apache was intense. The Academy players were weaker, and their coach, Brendan King, knew they’d have to play their best for a
chance at winning. When Apache built a lead by 14 points with four minutes on the clock, King called one last timeout (比赛暂停). “If we want to win this game, this is the time,” he told his players.
Academy came out of the timeout with new energy, sinking shot after shot to narrow the gap to just a few points. Then, with two minutes left, the referee (裁判) stopped play. The
scoreboard had Academy down by 4 points; the scorebook had them down by 2. League rules state that the scorebook is final. The scoreboard was updated to 43 -41, with Apache taking the lead.
Play continued. Academy hit a 3-point shot to top Apache by a point for the school’s
first-ever district championship. The girls piled up on top of one another, but King walked to the locker room with a sinking feeling in his heart.
That night, King sat down at the table with the game tape. He watched the entire game
through, counting every point on a notepad. His instinct was right. By his count, Academy had lost the game by a point. Just a minute before the referee stopped the game, the scorekeeper
miscounted an extra basket for the Academy due to a poor angle.
Deflated but relieved to know the truth, King informed the league’s governing body. Then, he told the players to meet him at school and broke the news. Within 20 minutes, the team decided there was only one thing left to do: turn the trophy (奖杯) over to the rightful champion. Next,
King made the 90-minute drive to Apache to deliver the trophy to its players.
Apache coach had also noticed the error and raised the issue with officials, but the score wasn’t overturned. After reviewing King’s report, they made an exception, earning Apache its
win. “They worked just as hard as we did. I hated the moment was taken away from them,” says King.
4 .What happened with two minutes left in the game
A .The scorekeeper found an error. B .Academy took the lead with a 3-point shot.
C .King called a technical timeout. D .The match was suspended over a scoring mistake.
5 .Why did the scorekeeper add extra points to Academy’s score
A .He misread the league rules. B .The close game confused him.
C .He had a poor viewing angle. D .The scoreboard showed wrong scores.
6 .What does the underlined word “Deflated” in paragraph 5 mean
A .Confused. B .Discouraged. C .Astonished. D .Annoyed.
7 .What can be a suitable title for the text
A .A Close Match B .True Champions C .Coach’s Choice D .A Satisfying Result

Researchers at the University of Padua in Italy have traced the origins of one of Venice’s most long-lasting signs: the bronze winged lion that stands on the top of a column in St Mark’s Square. Long believed to be a Venetian creation, the sculpture is determined to come from the Yangzi River basin in China.
The lion systematically reflects Chinese artistic traditions. For example, the position of its paws matches that of ancient Chinese lion guardians, originally fierce protectors of tombs.
Researchers propose that Marco Polo may have acquired the sculpture, a gift from the Yuan
Dynasty emperor, and later brought it back to Venice. A Chinese burial guardian thus became a silent witness to the vast cultural exchanges.
In China, the lion holds an important symbolic role even though the animals have never
lived there in the wild. From palaces to the gates of private homes and even modern banks, pairs of stone lions still stand guard.
Real lions began arriving in China via the Silk Road, sent as foreign offerings from Central
Asian states to emperors ofthe Han Dynasty. By the Tang Dynasty, lions were already features of the cultural imagination. Over the centuries, their style evolved: Tang figures often walk
energetically, Song examples soften into playful scenes, while later lions sit low in calm dignity. large and completely still.
The lion’s influence also extended into popular culture. The lion dance combined martial
arts, acrobatics (杂技) and drama into a brilliant performance. Performed at public celebrations, the dance represented strength, luck and the driving away of evil spirits. Today, it remains a
beloved festive event across China and throughout overseas Chinese communities. From foreign gift animal to sacred guardian, from sculpted icon to dynamic performer, the lion in China reflects a unique blend of folk inspiration and artistic imagination.
In Italy, the bronze lion still gazes over Venice, standing as a reminder of the global
networks linking East Asia and Europe long before the modern age, and of how symbols travel, transform and last across civilizations.
8 .What is the researchers’ discovery about the bronze lion
A .It originated in China. B .It was made by Venetians.
C .It stood as Venice’s symbol. D .It was bought by Marco Polo.
9 .What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A .Lions’ origin and traditional role. B .Lions’ images and historic significance.
C .Lions’ spread and cultural influence. D .Lions’ introduction and stylistic evolution.
10 .What is the lion dance viewed as today
A .A memorial ceremony. B .A form of martial arts training.
C .A traditional celebration. D .An intercultural collaboration.
11 .What can we learn from the bronze lion’s existence in Italy
A .Venice served as an ancient trade center.
B .The bronze lion symbolized Venice’s history.
C .Ancient China exported lion statues widely.
D .Cultural exchanges existed earlier than assumed.

Huge growth in wind and solar energy has provided plentiful green power, but on sunny,
windy days across Europe, there is often more electricity than the grid (电网) needs. Grid
operators and renewable plant owners are racing to find a cheap way to store this extra power so it can be used when demand peaks in the evening, or when the wind drops and the sun doesn’t shine.
A European company called Energy Dome has the answer: a giant gas dome filled with
CO2 . When green power is plentiful, the CO2 is pumped into a compressor (压缩机), where the gas is heated, compressed into a liquid, and then kept in carbon-steel tanks. Heat from the process is stored for later reuse.
When power is required, the liquid CO2 is passed through a heating device to turn it back into a high-pressure gas, which is reheated and used to drive a generator, producing electricity.
The CO2 gas is finally returned to the dome.
The plant can store power for 8 to 24 hours at a time, says Energy Dome’s Claudio
Spadacini, making it perfect for medium-term energy storage. “What we provide is a technology which is intended to be in the daily storage market. It is meant to switch energy from day to night, from today to tomorrow,” he says. “Today that is the main need you have when you have a wind and solar-dominated grid.”
Energy Dome will open its first commercial plant later this year. It has received a lot of requests from other power companies and wind and solar plant developers that are interested in building a dome on their sites to avoid the risks of ultra-low or even negative power prices.
Mark Barrett of University College London analyses the CO2 dome vs. traditional
batteries. Batteries are mass-produced in standardized factories, making them simple and
convenient to install and use. “With a CO2 dome, it’s a big electro-chemical plant, basically, that you can’t wheel out of a factory,” he notes. “The new technology may therefore face certain
challenges when competing in the energy storage market.”
12 .What problem do green energy operations face
A .Green energy fails to meet demand. B .Extra green energy brings slight benefit.
C .Green energy comes at a high price. D .Extra green energy lacks effective storage.
13 .What does Claudio Spadacini suggest about the renewables-heavy grid
A .It depends on batteries. B .It requires daily energy shifting.
C .It produces power steadily. D .It reduces the cost of electricity.
14 .What does Energy Dome aim to do
A .To break into the daily storage market. B .To take the place of traditional batteries.
C .To cut the cost of producing electricity. D .To offer technology to power companies.
15 .What is Mark Barrett’s opinion on the CO2 dome
A .It may struggle to compete. B .It needs further improvement.
C .It outruns traditional batteries. D .It has bright market prospects.

In the summer of 2015, I was a bored 16-year-old with nothing to do but wander the streets of Michigan. The summer heat wrapped around me like a blanket, and every street corner felt
empty, the days stretching on with no joy and no purpose.
One roasting afternoon, I slipped into the public library to escape the heat. Td never been
inside before. I paused at the entrance, watching for a moment. An elderly librarian nodded at an older man, handing him a pair of reading glasses. The man mouthed a thank you, and the librarian smiled, returning to his desk-his name tag read Mr Jones.
The place was quiet and cool. I wandered past shelves of books. Not knowing what to look for, I just picked one at random: Wonder. I sat down at a table near the window and started
reading. Within pages, I was hooked. The character felt so real, his experience so familiar. For the first time, I saw my own feelings reflected in someone else’s words. Just then a soft voice
interrupted me. “That’s a good choice,” said an elderly man with kind eyes. It was Mr Jones, the librarian. He told me he had read it many times and that it is about people who are searching for
acceptance and confidence, just like me. As he spoke, the tension in my face melted into a look of quiet recognition.
I was surprised. How could he know that
Over the next few weeks, I returned almost every day. Mr Jones never pushed books on me. He simply placed them on the counter as if they’d been waiting. In their pages, I found voices that spoke my potential and dreams I didn’t know I had. One rainy Thursday, I stayed until closing
time. As I handed back the book, Mr Jones looked at me and said gently, “You have a story inside you too, don’t you ” I froze. No one had ever said anything like that to me before.

What Should We Do in the AI Era
Dear teachers and friends,
Good morning. Today, I’d like to share my thoughts on our future in the AI era. It’s clear that AI is reshaping the job market. Some repetitive jobs, such as basic data entry and simple
assembly work, may be replaced. Meanwhile, new jobs in big data analysis and digital creation will be created.
As high school students, we must adapt proactively. Firstly, cultivate critical thinking and creativity, skills machines cannot replicate. Secondly, embrace lifelong learning to master new technologies rather than fearing them. Finally, focus on developing empathy and collaboration, which remain our core advantages.
Let us not be passive observers but active architects ofthis new world. By blending human
wisdom with AI efficiency, we will carve out irreplaceable careers.
Thank you.
47 .One possible version:
He asked me to sit down and we had a talk. I poured out my inner boredom, confusion and hidden dreams without any hesitation. Mr Jones listened patiently, his eyes twinkling with
encouragement. "Words have power," he whispered. He told me that writing was a perfect way to record thoughts and express feelings, and even small stories could touch hearts. He gave me a
notebook and a pen, encouraging me to write down every flash of inspiration. That conversation ignited a spark within me, fueling my journey from a lost teen to a determined writer.
Years later, with my first novel in hand, I went to the library to visit Mr Jones. My hands
trembled slightly as I handed him the book, nervous yet eager. He read it carefully, a soft smile
spreading across his face. He praised my sincere words and vivid emotions, telling me I had found my life’s direction. That summer, the library didn’t just shelter me from the heat-it lit up my life, teaching me that kindness and a book can awaken a lost soul and pave the way for a bright future.
