“How many times have you heard, or maybe you’ve said to yourself, ‘I hate small talk’ ” asks Kyle Kellams, a Fayetteville, Arkansas, news director and radio host. But, he believes that it can serve as the gateway to real understanding.
One “small talk” question that he frequently asks guests in the KUAF studio is: “What’s the first movie you ever saw in a movie theater ” Part of the reason he poses this particular question is technical — he’s testing the sound level of people’s voices on the microphone — but that’s not all. He says, “Sometimes that question leads to an interesting conversation.”
Here’s an example of what he means. One guest’s answer was Jaws, which surprised him because he guessed she must have been quite young at the time. He recalls, “So I asked her, ‘Who took you as a kid to see Jaws ’ She said, ‘My dad. ’ Well, that led us to a brief conversation about sharks, about fear, and about, for her, growing up the kid of divorced (离婚的) parents. Then we went away and had the regular conversation about the topic we were scheduled to, and I think it
went slightly better because we had actually made a connection.”
By “small talk”, Kellams adds, “I’m not talking about, ‘Hey, isn’t that strange weather ’
followed by a few moments of awkward silence.” You should probably also avoid asking “What do you do ” since that question tends to keep things at a shallow level, too. Instead, you can
borrow Kellams movie-theater question or come up with your own. Maybe it’s “What’s the first
book you remember reading by yourself ” or “What’s your favorite vegetable ” Think about what could draw out vivid memories or passionate opinions, or what you’d be genuinely interested in
finding out.
But remember, you’re not there to simply collect their answer and depart. You’re there to
receive it like the gift that it is, and respond wholeheartedly. As radio host Celeste Headlee likes to say, “A good conversation is like a game of catch.” Just as you wouldn’t interrupt catching and
throwing a ball or Frisbee (飞盘) with a friend to check your phone or look for someone more interesting, commit yourself to following the small talk wherever it may lead.
4 .Why does Kellams use small talk in conversations
A .It reveals a personal detail.
B .It can raise microphone levels.
C .It helps build a genuine connection.
D .It involves questions about movies.
5 .What can be inferred about the movie Jaws
A .It tells a love story.
B .It’s a children’s movie.
C .It contains terrifying scenes.
D .It’s about animal conservation.
6 .What does Kellams think of small talk about the weather
A .It takes up too much time.
B .It makes one feel unhappy.
C .It fails to test one’s memory.
D .It keeps the talk on the surface.
7 .What does the author want to highlight in the last paragraph
A .Strategies for a conversation.
B .Benefits of a heartfelt conversation.
C .Competitive elements in a conversation.
D .Wholehearted engagement in a conversation.

When we think about high school’s lasting impact, we often focus on grade point averages, extracurricular activities, and close friendships. But according to a new study, the influence of
high school stretches far beyond the teenage years and into our very bodies.
The study tracked a nationally representative sample of individuals who were high school
sophomores (二年级的) and seniors in 1980. Researchers followed these participants into their early 50s and found strong links between high school experience and midlife body mass index
(BMI). This relationship held even when accounting for college education, academic attainment, and weight during high school itself.
This research argues that high schools are more than institutions of learning — they are
health shapers. For decades, we’ve known that educational attainment is linked to health
outcomes, including weight. But this study pushes the timeline back, suggesting that the process of becoming educated — especially the early stages that happen in high school — is just as
crucial.
So, what parts of high school matter It turns out that attending private schools, being in
high socioeconomic status (High-SES) environments, and enrolling in advanced curricular tracks were associated with lower midlife BMI, especially for women. These factors weren’t just minor contributors; they maintained their influence even after researchers controlled for a host of
variables like college degrees and adult income.
Interestingly, popularity during high school also played a role for women. In a society
where women and girls face heightened pressure around body image, early social acceptance may help establish healthier long-term habits and body ideals.
The gender differences in this study are striking. For women, both family and school SES, along with popularity, were significantly linked to adult weight. For men, the connection existed but was less pronounced. One possible reason The cultural landscape. Girls and women often
deal with more pressure to be thin and face harsher judgment about their weight than boys and
men. These pressures likely strengthen how high school experiences — both academic and social — shape long-term behaviors and self-perceptions.
8 .What does the study mainly reveal about high schools
A .They predict academic success. B .They foster social relationships.
C .They determine career achievements. D .They shape long- term physical health.
9 .Which factor relates to lower adult BMI for women
A .Adult income status. B .High school popularity.
C .College degree level. D .High school sports activities.
10 .Why do gender differences exist in findings
A .Social expectations. B .Economic policies.
C .Educational resources. D .Biological distinctions.
11 .What can be a suitable title for the text
A .Gender Differences in Educational Environments
B .The Link Between School Grades and Adult Success
C .High School’s Long- Term Impact on Physical Health
D .The Role of Social Activities in adolescent Development

Flamingos are eye-catching birds known for their pink color, standing on one leg to
conserve energy, and dancing during mating and eating. Scientists have understood them to be
filter (过滤) feeders. Like baleen whales, they have developed parts of the mouth that allow them to filter and eat small organisms from the water.
One biology researcher from Northern California became curious about what was going on under the water. It started when he and his family were visiting the zoo in Atlanta, Georgia, and he noticed a flamingo eating. Surprised that scientific research hadn’t yet delivered an answer, he
decided to investigate.
After studying the animals for a few years, he announced his findings in May. Flamingos, he says, aren’t simply passively filtering food. They are deliberately moving water in ways that
direct the prey into their mouths. They use their L-shaped beaks upside down underwater to create vortex (漩涡) — like mini-tornadoes of water. The water, which can contain small organisms,
moves from the lake bed or seafloor to the water surface and into the flamingos’ mouths.
To find out what was happening, the researcher and his team studied three flamingos that were trained to feed in a clear container. The scientists also built a three-dimensional model of a flamingo beak and watched it work underwater. They found that flamingos frequently pull their heads out of the water during the process of feeding. The birds also chatter (鸣叫), or clap their beaks together, when the tops of their heads but not their beaks are out of the water. These
movements, along with a dance-like stomping motion they do with their feet, create the vortexes. While the flamingos’ motions can look playful, they serve an important role in their survival.
12 .What can we know about flamingos from the first paragraph
A .They use filtering to attract potential mates’ attention.
B .They adopt specific postures to display their beauty.
C .Their pink feathers are closely related to mating behavior.
D .The function of their mouth parts is similar to those of baleen whales.
13 .What does the underlined word “prey” in paragraph 3 probably refer to
A .The water in the container. B .The vortex-like mini-tornadoes.
C .The small organisms in the water. D .The L-shaped beaks of flamingos.
14 .What can we infer from the researcher’s investigation
A .All flamingos live in lakes or seas with clear water.
B .The findings use three wild flamingos as study objects.
C .Baleen whales catch food in the same way as flamingos.
D .Flamingos’ feeding is more complex than previously thought.
15 .What is the last paragraph mainly about
A .How flamingos created vortexes. B .How three flamingos are trained.
C .How researchers built 3D models. D .How flamingos survive the vortexes.

Artificial Intelligence in Modern Life
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into daily life is transforming how we work and live. The first AI program was developed in the 1950s by computer scientists. 16 This technology now impacts various areas from healthcare to transportation.
In medicine, AI algorithms (算法) analyze medical images faster than human doctors,
processing thousands of scans in minutes to identify rare diseases. 17 For example,
some systems detect early signs of diseases like cancer with over 90% accuracy, significantly improving patient survival rates. However, these tools are designed to assist rather than replace medical professionals, as human judgment remains critical in complex cases.
18 Self-driving cars use sensors and AI to navigate roads safely, interpreting traffic signals, avoiding obstacles, and adapting to changing weather conditions. Major
automakers have invested billions in this technology, though fully autonomous vehicles still face regulatory challenges related to liability and safety standards. The change to widespread use needs technical improvements and gradual public acceptance.
Education has also benefited from AI applications, particularly in personalized learning.
AI-powered tutors offer 24/7 academic support globally, answering student questions, explaining difficult concepts, and assigning practice exercises. These platforms adjust difficulty levels based on student performance. 19
Despite its advantages, AI development presents societal challenges. Ethical (道德的)
concerns regarding data privacy have arisen, as AI systems often rely on vast amounts of personal information. Additionally, unemployment due to automation has sparked debates about workforce retraining and economic inequality. 20 As AI continues to mature, finding the balance
between technological advancement and human values remains crucial to ensuring its benefits are shared equitably.
A .Transportation represents another groundbreaking application.
B .Experts predict all jobs will be automated within the next decade.
C .Many factories now use robots for dangerous manufacturing tasks.
D .Their check-ups help doctors make more informed treatment decisions.
E .It enables machines to perform human-like tasks such as learning and reasoning.
F .This provides individualized learning experiences unavailable in traditional classrooms.
G .These issues need ongoing discussion among policymakers, technologists, and the public.

Hero on Four Paws
The story takes place in a peaceful suburban neighborhood, known for its friendly residents and tree-lined streets. There lives Charlie, a kind-hearted man in his thirties, and his loyal dog,
Rusty, a spirited and intelligent Golden Retriever. Charlie had adopted Rusty from a local shelter two years ago, and they had been inseparable ever since. Rusty was not just a pet to Charlie; he was a companion, a friend, and in many ways, his savior, pulling him out of loneliness.
One weekend, Charlie decided to take Rusty on a hiking trip to the nearby woods, a place they had visited many times before. They loved exploring the scenic trails and enjoying nature
together. Rusty, with his keen sense of smell and boundless energy, was always leading the way.
This trip, however, took an unexpected turn. While walking along a narrow path, Charlie lost his footing and slipped, falling down a steep slope. He hit his head and lost consciousness. When he woke up, it was getting dark, he was in pain, and Rusty was nowhere to be seen.
Panicked and hurt, Charlie tried to call for help, but his voice was weak. He worried about Rusty — where could he be Did he get lost in the woods Charlie felt helpless and scared as the
night approached, and his injuries made it impossible for him to move.
Meanwhile, Rusty had not abandoned his owner. After the fall, Rusty had raced back to the main trail, barking madly, trying to get the attention of anyone who might be nearby. His endless barking eventually caught the attention of another hiker, who followed Rusty back to where
Charlie lay injured.

establish healthier long-term habits and body ideals.
根据最后一段“The gender differences in this study are striking. For women, both family and school SES, along with popularity, were significantly linked to adult weight. For men, the connection existed but was less pronounced. One possible reason The cultural
landscape. Girls and women often deal with more pressure to be thin and face harsher judgment
about their weight than boys and men. These pressures likely strengthen how high school
experiences — both academic and social — shape long-term behaviors and self-perceptions.
故选 A 项。
This research argues that high schools are more than institutions of learning — they are health shapers. For decades, we’ve known that educational
attainment is linked to health outcomes, including weight. But this study pushes the timeline back, suggesting that the process of becoming educated — especially the early stages that happen in
high school — is just as crucial.
Impact on Physical Health

根据第一段“Like baleen whales, they have developed parts of the mouth that allow them to filter and eat small organisms from the water.(像须鲸一样,它们进化出了嘴巴的部分结构,使它们能够过滤并食用水中的小生物。)”
根据下文“They use their L-shaped beaks upside down underwater to create vortex (漩涡) —like mini-tornadoes of water. The water, which can contain small organisms,
moves from the lake bed or seafloor to the water surface and into the flamingos’ mouths.(它们用
根据第三段“Flamingos, he says, aren’t simply passively filtering food. They are deliberately moving water in ways that direct the prey into their mouths.(他说,火烈鸟并不是简单地被动过滤食物。它们有意地以一种将猎物引导到它们嘴里的方式移动水。)”可推断,火烈鸟的进食方式比之前认为的更为复杂。故选 D。
15 .主旨大意题。根据最后一段“To find out what was happening, the researcher and his team studied three flamingos that were trained to feed in a clear container. The scientists also built a
three-dimensional model of a flamingo beak and watched it work underwater. They found that
flamingos frequently pull their heads out of the water during the process of feeding. The birds also chatter (鸣叫), or clap their beaks together, when the tops of their heads but not their beaks are out of the water. These movements, along with a dance-like stomping motion they do with their feet, create the vortexes.(为了弄清楚发生了什么,研究人员和他的团队研究了三只被训练在透明容器中进食的火烈鸟。
故选 A。
