Growing up as a kid in the UK, I was fascinated by insects. Wanting to protect them, I started building little houses for ants, using little pieces of wood and leaves.
I then moved on to making little cups and saucers from silver foil (箔纸) for the magic creatures that I thought lived at the bottom of the garden. When my mother saw my work, she told me that the smaller I made things, the bigger my name would
become.
As the years went by, my designs became more complicated. And I used many different materials, such as diamond fragments, eyelashes and even spider web
threads.
I sometimes work for 16 hours a day without breaks, and it takes me up to three months to finish a sculpture. I have to hold my breath during the sculpting process. It isn’t actually an easy process — but I can enjoy it once I’ve finished it.
My sculptures have taken me to incredible places. In 2012, I met the queen and gave her a tiny crown on the head of a pin. In 2013, I received my first Guinness
World Record for creating the smallest sculpture made by hand. It was a 24-carat gold motorbike that fitted inside a drilled out hair. In 2017, I beat my record with a
sculpture of a human fetus (胎儿) that measured 0.078mm by 0.053mm.
One time, a fly landed on a Cinderella carriage sculpture I was working on. The fly’s wings blew it away, and it was lost. I was heart-broken. Another time, I
accidentally breathed in a microscopic Alice from Alice in Wonderland. Alice is now in Wonderland forever. But it did give me the chance to make an even better one the second time around.
The microscopic world has always been my happy place. I’ve tried to make
bigger sculptures, but small is best for me. We need to appreciate the little things in life. Small things can also be mighty, too.
4 .What inspired the author to create tiny sculptures
A .His desire for fame. B .His love for insects.
C .His passion for architecture. D .His dream of setting a record.
5 .How does the author think of his sculpting process
A .Creative and fulfilling. B .Competitive and demanding.
C .Exhausting but enjoyable. D .Relaxing but time-consuming.
6 .What message does the author intend to convey
A .Failure is the mother of success. B .Don’t underestimate small things.
C .Attention to details leads to success. D .Don’t let others’ opinions define you. 7 .What is the best title for the passage
A .From Ants to Crowns: A Micro-Artist’s Journey
B .16 Hours a day: The Price of Artistic Perfection
C .The Function of Microscopic Art: An amazing Tool
D .The Future of Microscopic Art: Is It Worth the Effort
C
Most ofus in the entrepreneurial (企业家的) community are blessed — or cursed — with higher-than-average ambition. Ambitious people strongly desire accomplishments and are willing to take more risks and spend more effort to get them.
Overall, this is a positive quality, especially for people trying to build their own businesses. Apparently, if you’re more naturally driven to set goals, you are more
likely to succeed.
Actually, this isn’t always the case. In fact, in some cases, extreme ambition may end up doing more harm than good.
One major side effect of excessive ambition is the tendency to focus too
determinedly on one particular vision or end goal. This is problematic because it
affects your ability to adapt to new circumstances, which is vital if you want to be a successful entrepreneur. If a new competitor emerges to threaten your business, you may need to change direction, even if that means not sticking to your original vision.
If you have too much ambition, you’ll find this hard, if not impossible.
Few people are successful when they try to build their first brand.
Unfortunately, for the most ambitious entrepreneurs, a failure is seen as disastrous, and impossible to recover from.
It’s a clear departure from the intended plan toward the intended goal. For
people with limited ambition, however, failure is viewed as something closer to
reality. Remember, failure is inevitable, and every failure you survive is a learning experience.
Ambitious people tend to be more materialistically successful than their non-ambitious counterparts. However, they’re only slightly happier than their
less-ambitious counterparts and tend to live significantly shorter lives. This implies
that even though ambitious people are more likely to achieve conventional “success,” such success means nothing for their health and happiness — and if you don’t have
health and happiness, what else could possibly matter
Clearly, some amount of ambition is good for your motivation. Without any
ambition, you wouldn’t start your own business, set or achieve goals, and get far in life. But an excess of ambition can also be dangerous, putting you at risk of burnout, stubbornness, and even a shorter life.
8 .What does the author think of most entrepreneurs
A .They could work smarter but not harder.
B .They are more willing to risk their own lives.
C .They are more ambitious than ordinary people.
D .They possess more positive qualities than most of us.
9 .What does the underlined word “excessive” in Para.4 probably mean
A .Normal. B .Overdone. C .Balanced. D .Insufficient.
10.According to the author, which is important to become a successful entrepreneur A .Holding on to one’s original vision.
B .Focusing determinedly on a particular goal.
C .Avoiding radical change in one’s career direction.
D .Being flexible and responsive to changing environments.
11 .What does the author advise us to do concerning ambition
A .Prioritize health and happiness over material success.
B .Avoid taking unnecessary risks when starting a business.
C .Follow the example of the most ambitious entrepreneurs.
D .Distinguish between conventional success and our life goal.

Chocolates save us from many things, especially emotional distress. They comfort us in times of trouble, calming down a racing heart by channelling happy calories inside us. We all have faith in chocolates to delight us in an instant!
Recently, chocolate lovers were heartbroken as scientists claimed that they can become extinct by 2050! But hey, we have some happy news for you. Scientists can still help save chocolates from dying out! If you are not aware as to why scientists
made the statement about the death of this wonderful thing, let us tell you the facts. Chocolate trees, whose seeds are used to make chocolate, grow in the tropical plant world and require very specific weather conditions to prosper.
Now, fifty percent of the world’s cocoa beans come from two countries in West Africa, C te d’Ivoire and Ghana. Scientists believe that both of these countries will
experience a 3.8℃ temperature increase by 2050 due to global warming, endangering the cacao farms in the rainforests. These farms will then have to be shifted to cooler
mountainous areas, which are the natural habitat of wildlife. This will lead to some tough decisions: whether to grow chocolate or save wildlife.
Unfortunately, the crisis of global warming has already had a serious negative impact on cacao farms’ harvest, leading to the prices of chocolates skyrocketing.
Scientists, however, are trying to find a long-term and eco-friendly solution to this problem! They are modifying the species with gene-editing technology,
transforming the seedlings into a species that survives even in drier and warmer climates.
According to a report by The Business Insider, in the University of California’s
new bio-sciences building, tiny green cacao seedlings are lined up in refrigerated greenhouses for a new experiment using CRISPR technology. By controlling plant DNA, this technology is already being used worldwide to make plants tougher and cheaper. In this experiment, scientists will make precise changes to the seedlings’ DNA to help cocoa crops survive in warmer and drier climates.
12 .What was scientists’ recent statement about chocolates
A .They could become a rare treat in the near future.
B .They could calm people down a bit in times of crisis.
C .They could prevent people from getting heartbroken.
D .They could become unavailable in less than 30 years.
13 .What would happen if the cacao farms were shifted to cooler mountainous areas A .The rainforests would shrink dramatically.
B .The quality of cocoa beans would suffer greatly.
C .The natural habitat of wildlife there would be ruined.
D .The cacao farmers would have a tough time adapting.
14 .What do we learn about the cacao farms in the crisis of global warming
A .They try to seek help from gene-editing scientists.
B .They decide to move to cooler mountainous areas.
C .They have suffered a lot due to a decrease in produce.
D .They have benefited by raising prices of cocoa beans.
15 .What is the last paragraph mainly about
A .A CRISPR experiment to enhance cocoa crops’ climate tolerance.
B .The history of CRISPR technology and its role in global agriculture.
C .The impact of climate change on traditional cocoa farming methods.
D .How refrigerated greenhouses are used to store cacao seedlings worldwide.

两项为多余选项。
We’ve all encountered a “know-it-all” — someone who eagerly lectures on any topic, regardless of expertise, often frustrating those who actually know better.
16
One explanation is “naive realism,” the idea that people naturally believe their view of the world reflects objective truth. In reality, all perceptions are shaped by
personal biases (偏见), memories, and emotions, creating a unique perspective for each individual. Yet many fail to recognize this, assuming that anyone who sees
things differently is simply wrong. 17
Another potential cognitive bias at work is the “illusion (错觉) of information adequacy”. 18 . For instance, someone who sees a classmate avoiding sports might assume they’re just lazy, without considering other reasons, such as an injury. This illusion leads some to believe they know more than they actually do.
19 Expressing opinions can be a way of establishing superiority and a sense of dominance in social settings. There’s also the Dunning-Kruger effect, which is cognitive bias. 20 Their lack of insight prevents them from recognizing
when others have more knowledge than they do. As a result, they may confidently argue their points, even against experts. Ultimately, a know-it-all’s behavior may come from a combination of biases and social needs. Ironically, to become a
know-it-all, one must truly know too little.
A .This tendency to voice opinions can create tension.
B .For some, this belief becomes an urge to “correct” others.
C .These individuals often feel a responsibility to educate others.
D .Some people might also be driven by a need for status or control.
E .People often feel confident in their judgments, even without enough evidence.
F .People with limited knowledge in an area tend to overestimate their knowledge.
G.But why do some people assume they know more about every subject than anyone

Scientists from three research facilities in the UK have recently discovered a
rare human blood group system called MAL, which could potentially save thousands of people 36 (lack) a blood group antigen (血型抗原) called AnWj, reported the BBC.
Blood group antigens are typically protein or sugar molecules (分子) found on red blood cells’ surface, according to the Cleveland Clinic in the US. The presence or absence of specific antigens 37 (determine) different blood groups. These
antigens 38 (see) as “name tags” to help our immune system recognize which cells belong in our body. Red cells 39 the correct antigens may cause
allergies (过敏), leading to kidney failure or even death. Therefore, the 40
(accurate) of blood typing and cross-matching is crucial for safe procedures like organ transplants.
Using advanced DNA sequencing technology, the team identified the gene that encodes the AnWj blood group antigen. They then tested their finding by introducing that gene into AnWj-negative red cells, delivering the antigen into them. 41 (give) AnWj’s close association with the MAL protein (髓鞘和淋巴细胞蛋白), the scientists named 42 new blood group system MAL.
But why do humans have different blood groups in the first place One of the most popular theories suggests that blood types 43 (evolve) to enhance our species’ immunity against diseases over history. One key piece of evidence is that blood type O 44 (like) originated before humans migrated out of Africa
45 was particularly common in regions where malaria was prevalent (流行的).

Nina walked along the road with a sad look on her face. Next Saturday was her friend Betty’s birthday, but she did not have anything nice to wear to the party. Her father had just lost his job, so she couldn’t ask for a new dress. Nina decided to wear an old dress that had been her favorite for many years but had become a little too
short for her now. “I’ll ask the tailor to increase the length,” Nina said to herself.
The tailor, however, refused to do so. “The dress is too old. Any alteration (改动) won’t work for it. Besides, I have too many other orders. My hands are full.” With a sad heart, she walked out of the tailor’s shop. “What am I to do ” she thought.
Just as she was about to go home, she saw a lady getting out of a car not far away and walking toward the bank in a hurry. The lady opened her handbag to take out some papers, and her wallet fell on the ground. Unaware of it, she went into the bank.
Nina ran and picked up the wallet. There were so many people inside the bank that she decided to wait on the steps. After a long time, the lady came out. Nina
handed her the wallet that she had dropped. The lady could not believe it. The little girl had been waiting for her for so long to hand her the wallet. She looked at the
contents in it, and everything was just the way she had left it.
“Thank you, sweetheart. What is your name, and where are you going Can I drop you home ” the lady asked Nina softly.
Nina told the lady her name and that she was going home. The lady invited Nina to get into the car. On the way, Nina told her what had happened in the tailor’s shop
and the difficulty her father was facing. The lady looked at the dress and then at Nina. She was the owner of a boutique (时装店) that stitched (缝制) clothes for children
and young adults.

根据第一段“Growing up as a kid in the UK, I was fascinated by insects. Wanting to protect them, I started building little houses for ants, using little pieces of wood and leaves. (在英国长大的童年时期,我对昆虫十分着迷。为了保护它们,我开始用木屑和树叶为蚂蚁搭建小房子)”和第二段中“When my mother saw my work, she told me that the smaller I made things, the bigger my name would become. (当母亲看到我的作品时,她对我说:‘你做得越小,名声就会越大。’)”可知,作者小时候对昆虫着迷,开始为蚂蚁建造小房子,后来在妈妈的鼓励下创作微型雕塑。由此可知,他对昆虫的热爱是创作微型雕塑的最初灵感来源。故选 B 项。
5.推理判断题。根据第四段“I sometimes work for 16 hours a day without breaks, and it takes me up to three months to finish a sculpture. I have to hold my breath during the sculpting process. It
isn’t actually an easy process — but I can enjoy it once I’ve finished it (有时我会连续工作 16 小
根据最后一段中“We need to appreciate the little things in life. Small things can also be mighty, too. (我们应当珍视生活中的细微之物,微小的事物同样可以蕴含强大的力

46 .Dear all,
I’m Li Hua, an exchange student from China. I lost a precious gift and I’m seeking your help.
This gift, delicately handmade by my classmates, is a small wooden model bridge. The
panda and the kiwi bird, our peoples’ favorite animals, gaze at each other from both sides. A boy stands on the bridge, holding a bunch of blooming flowers, with neatly inscribed words “Best
wishes” below, the entire sculpture witnessing our friendship.
Unfortunately, I lost it after the farewell party. If anyone happens to see it or has picked it up by mistake, please kindly let me know via my school-chat account Lihua886. I would really appreciate your help in finding it.
Best regards,
Li Hua.
47 .One possible version:
“Come to my shop and collect your dress tomorrow,” the lady told Nina. The next morning, Nina nervously entered the boutique. The lady greeted her warmly and handed her the dress. To
Nina’s surprise, the old dress had been transformed — its length was perfectly extended with
delicate flowers on the sleeves. “I added some adjustments,” the lady smiled. “Kindness deserves beauty.” Nina’s eyes filled with tears. “Thank you … but I can’t afford this,” she whispered. The lady gently shook her head. “This is my gift to you. Your honesty moved me.”
On Saturday, Nina wore the dress with afresh new design to Betty’s birthday party. When she entered, everyone gasped. Betty ran over, exclaiming, “You look like a princess!” For the first time in weeks, Nina smiled brightly. When Nina returned home, her father was waiting with
tear-filled eyes. “The boutique called,” he said, holding a job offer letter. “They need a delivery driver … and heard I’m good with maps.” That night, Nina hung the transformed dress by her
window. The dress was not just fabric; it was a reminder that even in hardship, kindness could make miracles.
