Section A
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and
grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
Notre-Dame de Paris
After a disastrous fire, this ancient site is now fully restored.
On April 15, 2019, the people of Paris, France, were shocked to see the Notre-Dame de
Paris Cathedral in flames. The cathedral 1 (stand) for hundreds of years, but the fire nearly destroyed it. Hundreds of firefighters fought to save the building, but the fire still did extensive
damage. Since then, the building has been closed for repairs, but this Sunday, it 2 (schedule) to be open to the public once more.
Notre-Dame took nearly two centuries to build, from 1163 to 1345, and even after its
completion, new features continued 3 (add). Repairs to the representative cathedral were
done with careful accuracy, using methods from 4 original construction in the Middle Ages.
Notre-Dame is an amazing example of Gothic architecture. The builders of Gothic
cathedrals thought of their buildings as places where people go to meet with God, so they tried to make the buildings look like heaven. This means the cathedrals all have tall ceilings 5
(support) by columns, with large windows that are made of colored glass. As a result, the
buildings are filled with colored light, which is intended to call to mind descriptions of heaven that say it has streets full of gold. Images of cathedrals like Notre-Dame 6 convey part of their
beauty and splendor, but they don't compare with the experience of seeing them in person.
In the late 18th century, popular resentment (怨恨) against the French upper class exploded into a revolution. The revolutionaries associated the Christian establishment with the king they
despised (鄙视), so they ransacked (洗劫) Notre-Dame along with many other churches. Shortly
after the revolution, some repairs were made, but the cathedral was still 7 bad shape. The
cathedral's disrepair partly inspired Victor Hugo's famous novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.
This novel, much of which takes place inside the cathedral, was so popular 8 it
inspired a major repair of the cathedral. The architect who planned the repairs took some creative
license, adding features rather than 9 (restore) the cathedral to its original appearance. But the
result was a beautiful building, which for a time was the most popular tourist attraction in France.
In 2018 more repair work began, intended to change some deterioration (恶化) that had taken place over time. It was during the repairing project that the fire started. The April 2019 fire destroyed the entire roof and much of the structure's original frame. But a few important pieces were – amazingly – spared. The fire forced the government to perform more extensive repairs
10 had been planned, but the work is now complete. Now people can once again visit this
architectural wonder and marvel at its beauty, its history and (for some) its spiritual significance.

Is vaping really safer than smoking
What exactly is vaping, and why is it so popular among teens Vaping is inhaling vapor (吸入雾气) through e-cigarette. It is ___11___ as an alternative smoking tobacco. There are likely
several reasons why teens find vaping interesting. Vaping devices look cool, and who doesn't like to look cool Liquids for electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) come in hundreds of 12 flavors such as mango, or strawberries and cream. Teens also think more about the here and now than the future. Here and now, vaping may be cool, but down the road, it's not.
People see vaping as safe because they think that they're just inhaling water vapor and tasty flavorings. But much more than that is going into their lungs. In fact, many different chemicals go into vape pods (烟弹). The liquid inside can contain heavy metals that cause lung damage. The
chemical diacetyl (双乙酰), 13 in many e-liquids, causes popcorn lung, which makes
breathing difficult. Signs of it can appear as little as two weeks after inhaling the chemical. The condition has no cure. The damage is 14 .
More troubling is the presence of nicotine in the vapor. Nicotine makes people feel good but is very addicting. It reaches the brain 10 seconds after being inhaled. Once 15 , people find it difficult to quit using it. The potential for nicotine addiction is higher in teens than adults because a teenager's brain is still 16 . Nicotine use during the teen years can affect one's
brain to become easily addicted to other drugs.
One vape pod can contain more nicotine than 20 cigarettes. Nicotine affects the length of time teens can pay attention, their ability to learn and their emotion 17 . People addicted to nicotine are often anxious without the drug. Over time more and more is 18 to make them feel good.
But it's never too late to quit. Ask friends and family to help. Don't just plan to 19
the number of times you vape each day. Now is the time to drop your e-cigarette ___20___. If you get anxious, breathe deeply and focus on enjoying the air. Cutting vaping out of your life will
make your body happier and healthier.

Vessel is a network of staircases and platforms that offers views of New York City from a variety of perspectives. The structure is meant to be a meeting point at the center of the area as

To explore Vessel, visitors need free tickets that allow them to enter the structure at a set time of the day. The purpose of the set times on the tickets is to keep the number of people on Vessel within a safe limit at all times.
Since Vessel opened to the public, it has been applauded by some visitors and criticized by others. Some have made fun of its shape, comparing it to a pineapple or waste paper basket.

All humans are born small, weak and completely dependent on others, and it takes years for them to become self-reliant. This means that children rely on adults to provide for them and
protect them, and they face great danger when adults cannot or will not do this. While
governments and organizations work to secure minors, the sheer (纯粹的) number and complexity of the issues some children face require a different approach.
The numerous risks faced by children often relate to social issues. For example, crises such as wars and natural disasters often separate children from their families, which leaves them
vulnerable to exploitation and lacking basic care. Other dangers occur specifically in wartime. For example, some armed forces use children as soldiers or rely on them for other forms of labor,
which exposes the children to physical danger and trauma (创伤) from witnessing or participating in violence. Children are also often killed or injured in war, sometimes due to schools or hospitals being bombed. Forcing children to fight and targeting them (or targeting buildings where they are likely to be) are considered human rights violations (违反), but this does not stop the practice.
Even in peacetime, some cultural practices can harm children. For example, forcing
children to work or to marry young can expose them to danger and deprive them of an education.
Since children face so many dangers, a variety of responses are necessary to address all of them. UNICEF takes several approaches to children directly and indirectly. This includes trying to prevent children from being separated from their families, and, if separation occurs, reuniting
families. It also includes work toward making sure all births are registered so that the children
have legal rights. UNICEF also supports research, proposes laws that protect children and
contributes to humanitarian projects. Addressing cultural, political and economic challenges can help prevent dangers to children before they occur.
Additionally, charities and other nonprofits work to keep children around the world safe.
Some provide humanitarian (人道主义) aid to ensure that children have access to food, clean
water and medical care. Others encourage people to sponsor children growing up in poverty,
which gives them the means to attend school. Sometimes people even communicate with their
sponsored children through letters. This is more personal than simply collecting money and makes people more willing to donate. By supporting these organizations, ordinary people can help
children around the world become safer.
Children are sensitive to a lot of dangers, and these dangers vary a bit by location and
circumstances. Thus, a many-sided approach is necessary to ensure that all children enjoy a safe, happy childhood, so they can grow into healthy adults.
43 .The word "deprive" (Para. 3) is closest in meaning to .

A .Problem-Solution with General-Particular
B .Time Order with Compare-Contrast
C .Cause-Effect with Classification Structure
D .General-Particular with Problem-Solution
45 .What can be inferred from the passage
A .The number of children who need help is large and the cases are different.
B .Besides UNICEF, there are some other forms to provide help for children.
C .Communicating with sponsored children is the best way to help children.
D .To some degree, it is impossible to get rid of children's dangers thoroughly.
46 .What is the best title for the passage
A .A Tough Crisis for Children

Section C
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two
more sentences than you need.
MIYAZAKI HAYAO
This Japanese treasure is considered by some to be the world's greatest animator
When people discuss famous directors or filmmakers, names like Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and Peter Jackson often come to mind. Miyazaki Hayao is one name that's sometimes overlooked even though he's frequently compared to some of these men.
47 Praise for the award-winning producer, director, animator and filmmaker seems never-ending. His six-decade career has been described as one that is "marked by genius and
wonder "
Miyazaki's spectacular stories transport audiences to magical worlds with memorable
characters. As beautiful as the talented animator's stories are, there's often a dark side to them as well as they often feature war, environmental destruction and more.
No doubt images from 1940s war-torn Japan left a lasting impression on young Miyazaki,
who was born in Tokyo in 1941. During his first few years, his family moved several times,
seeking safety. The fears and feelings of instability and danger associated with his childhood made their way into most of Miyazaki's stories. 48 An often-used character in Miyazaki's stories is that of the strong and capable heroine.
After graduating from college in 1963, Miyazaki began working as an animator at Toei Animation. 49 Throughout the 1970s, Miyazaki worked at different studios on various projects while continuing to develop his skills.
The 1980s brought incredible success and change, which was initiated by the 1984 release of his film Nausica of the Valley of the Wind. Its great success allowed Miyazaki and two friends to establish their own animation studio, Studio Ghibli, in 1985. 50
At 83 Miyazaki Hayao has considered retirement; and in fact, he's attempted to retire at
least three times. But each attempt has been followed by another masterpiece: Spirited Away
(2001), The Wind Rises (2013) and The Boy and the Heron (2023). Some have said that The Boy and the Heron, which won the 2024 Academy Award for the best animated feature film, feels like a farewell. Yet Studio Ghibli's vice president Junichi Nishioka is doubtful, saying Miyazaki will likely have a pencil in his hand until the very end.
A .Since then, Studio Ghibli has turned out one film after another, most of which have received critical praise.
B .Miyazaki just focused on his works instead of others' evaluation, attitude and feelings.
C .These dark themes, however, are balanced out by stories of love, loyalty and the importance of family.
D .People around the world love Miyazaki for his magnificent hand-drawn animation.
E .As a result, Miyazaki's stories ran across lots of negative responses besides positive ones.
F .It wasn't long before others noticed his tremendous drawing skills as well as his extraordinary animation style.
III. Summary Writing
51.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the
passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
How To Get Good Night's Sleep
Do you toss and turn half the night and wake up feeling exhausted If so, you are part of the
51 percent of people globally who say that they are not satisfied with their quality of sleep. Lack of sleep can cause problems such as stroke (中风), heart disease and obesity. Feeling sleepy
during the day, having difficulty falling asleep and experiencing sleep interruptions suggest you might need to change your ways.
Consider some tips that may help you sleep comfortably throughout the night, beginning with a sleep schedule. Work toward going to bed and getting up at the same time every day,
including weekends, until it becomes a habit. If you're still awake 20 minutes after bedtime, you could leave your bedroom and listen to calming music or read. When you feel tired, go back to bed.
Turn off all electronic devices an hour before bedtime. This will give you time to wind down from the stimulation before bed. Also, saving your bed for sleep and not for texts, phone calls and emails signals your brain it's time to take a nap.
Keeping your bedroom cool, dark and quiet can help you fall asleep more easily. Over 50 percent of the world's population lives in brightly lit cities, which interrupts people's sleep. So,
think about using blackout shades to darken your bedroom.
Promote better sleep by engaging in daily physical activity. Dr. Dan Gartenberg, an
associate professor in biobehavioral health at Penn State suggests variety in everyday activities,
including exercise patterns. "If you're riding your bike and follow the same route again and again, maybe go a different route. When we learn and expose ourselves to more information, there's
actually an effect where you get more deep sleep. "
Avoid large meals too close to bedtime and try not to drink caffeine within eight hours of going to bed.
If you need a nap, do it early in the day and keep it short. That way you won't affect your nightly sleep.
Worried about something Write it down and set it aside for tomorrow. Follow this with some deep breathing exercises to help you relax.
Changing your sleep environment and patterns may help you get the sleep you need!
