New Research Links Daily Multivitamins to Slower Biological Aging
Epigenetic (后成的;外遗传的) clocks estimate biological aging based on tiny changes in our
DNA. These clocks look at specific sites in our DNA 31.________ gene expression and change
naturally as we get older, helping track with mortality and the pace of aging.
“There is a lot of interest today in 32.________ ways to not just live longer, but to live better,”
said Dr. Howard Sesso, a researcher at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
“It was exciting to see benefits of a multivitamin 33.________ accessible, safe 34.________ with
markers of biological aging. This study opens the door to learning more about________ that
contribute to healthier, higher-quality aging.”
For their research, Dr. Sesso and his colleagues used data from the well-established Cocoa
Supplement Multivitamins Outcomes Study (COSMOS). They analyzed DNA methylation data from
5
blood samples of 98 randomly selected healthy participants with a(n) 35.________ chronological age
of 70.
The participants were 36.________ to take a daily cocoa extract and multivitamin; daily cocoa
extract and placebo; placebo and multivitamin; or placebos only. Samples were analyzed for changes
in five epigenetic clocks from the start of the 37.________ and at the end of the first and second
pared to the placebo only group, people in the multivitamin group had slowing in all five
epigenetic clocks, including 38.________ clocks that are predictive of mortality.
The changes equated to about four months less biological aging over the course of two years.
Additionally, people who were 39.________ older than their actual age at the start of the trial
benefited the most.
“We plan to do follow-up research to determine if the slowing of biological aging—observed
through these five epigenetic clocks, and additional or new ones—persists after the trial ends,” said
Dr. Yanbin Dong, a researcher at Augusta University.
“A lot of people take a multivitamin without necessarily knowing any benefits from taking it, so
the more we can learn about its potential health benefits, the better,” Dr. Sesso added. “Within
COSMOS, we are fortunate and excited to build upon a rich resource of biomarker data to test how
two interventions may improve biological aging and reduce age-related 40.________ outcomes.”
III. Reading Comprehension (15'+30'=45')
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C
and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
Try Paper-Based Crafting to Cut Through Overthinking
Since being diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder as a teenager, I've turned to medication,
talking therapy, and exercise to alleviate my symptoms. Still, I often find it hard to “switch off”, and
stop 41.________ thoughts.
But, recently, I discovered a new tool to slice through my anxiety. In a collage (拼贴画 )
workshop, I cut images from magazines, and pasted them on to paper. Playing around with pictures,
scissors, and glue, I was transported back to more creative childhood days—and experienced a deep
sense of 42.________.
43.\\\\\\ drawing or painting, there's no certain level of artistic skill required for a collage, while
6
the pressure to make something ‘perfect’ is removed. By remixing readymade visuals, I was able to
44.________ the voice of my inner critic, and feel a different kind of creative freedom.
Alongside the simple joy of cutting and arranging images, I learned that the final 45.________
can be meaningful, too. According to artist and teacher Hazel Pit, we mentally store certain past
images in our minds—and collage allows us to access them. “With its endless possibilities, collage
really is an ideal tool for accessing the unconscious mind, and expressing yourself,” she says.
Hazel's students have been surprised by the emotions reflected back to them in their
compositions. As she explains: “Collage can act as a 46.________ conduit (渠道,通道) for the inner
self,” and anyone can experience its benefits by following these steps.
Grab your tools
Gather visually-rich materials, including magazines and newspapers, leaflets, old books, vintage
postcards, and photographs. Searching for forgotten pictures can 47.________ new ideas and
emotional revelations. You will also need glue and a pair of 48.________. For the background,
choose paper or card that suits your personal style, from a piece of white A5 to a leftover delivery
box. Work with what you have!
Follow your intuition
Pick out your images 49.________. “Don't overthink it, or hold the end product in mind,” says
Hazel. Drawing on psychotherapist Carl Jung's theories about images as metaphors in healing, she
advises: “Only choose something that resonates with you, sparking an emotional reaction, as this will
give your collage substance.”
You might be 50.________ to certain colours, textures, or details, as well as figures, words, or
scenes. At this stage, tear out the pages which feature appealing pictures, and place them in a pile.
Cut, slice, and tear
Cut out your chosen images or experiment with tearing with your hands for rougher edges. This
repetitive act requires concentration and is soothing. “Cutting will put you in a meditative space,”
says Hazel, “as you stop thinking about 51.________ issues and exist in the present moment.”
Play around with pictures
Arrange, rearrange, and layer your images, testing different combinations. Without constraints,
allow your intuition to guide you. This is the most expressive part of the process, so embrace it.
Pin and paste
Once you're happy with the arrangement, glue it down. Small pins can also help keep your
7
composition in 52.________.
Reflect on your collage
Finally, take time to reflect upon your collage. Does the choice and arrangement of pictures hold
53.________ Days later, it may speak to you about feelings or thoughts that you didn't realize were
bubbling beneath the surface.
Generally speaking, collage requires no special 54.________ skill. The pressure to make
something “perfect” gradually disappears. Studies suggest that creative activities like collage can
reduce anxiety and strengthen one's sense of 55.________.

Section B
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or
unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the
one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
France, which prides itself as the global innovator of fashion, has decided its fashion industry
has lost an absolute right to define physical beauty for woman. Its lawmakers gave preliminary
approval last week to a law that would make it a crime to employ ultra-thin models on catwalks. The
8
parliament also agreed to ban websites that advocate “excessive thinness” by promoting extreme
dieting.
Such measures have a couple of uplifting motives. They suggest beauty should not be defined by
looks that end up with impinging on health. That's a start. And the ban on ultra-thin models seems to
go beyond protecting models from starving themselves to death, as some have done. It tells the
fashion industry that it must take responsibility for the signal it sends to women, especially teenage
girls, about the social standard they must use to determine their individual worth.
The bans, if fully enforced, would suggest to woman (and many men) that they should not let
others be judges of their beauty. And perhaps faintly, they hint that people should look to other
qualities like character and intellect rather than dieting their way to size zero or wasp-waist (黄蜂腰
体型).
The French measures, however, rely too much on severe punishment to change a culture that still
regards beauty as skin-deep and bone-showing. Under the law, using a fashion model that does not
meet a government-defined index of body mess could result in a $85,000 fine and six months in
prison.
The fashion industry knows it has an inherent problem in focusing on material decoration and
idealized body types. In Denmark, the United States, and a few other countries, it is trying to set
voluntary standard for models and fashion images that rely more on peer pressure for enforcement.
In contrast to France's actions, Denmark's fashion industry agreed last month on rules and
punishments regarding age, health, and other characteristics of models. The newly revised Danish
Fashion Ethical Charter (伦理准则) clearly states: “We are aware of and take responsibility for the
impact the fashion industry has on body ideals, especially on young people.”
Relying on ethical persuasion rather than law to address the misuse of body ideals may be the
best step. Even better would be to help elevate concepts of beauty beyond the material standards of a
particular industry.
56.According to the first paragraph, what would happen in France
A. Physical beauty would be redefined.
B. New catwalks would be constructed.
C. Websites about dieting would boom.
D. The fashion industry would decline.
57.The phrase “impinging on” (Line 2, Para 2) is closest in meaning to ______ .

D. doing harm to
58.Which of the following is TRUE of the fashion industry
A. The French measures have already failed.
B. New standards are being set in Denmark.
C. Models are no longer under peer pressure.
D. Its inherent problems are getting worse.
59.Which of the following may be the best title of the text
A. Just Another Struggle for Beauty
B. A Prospect for the Starving Models in France

You're walking down a quiet street and suddenly you hear some footsteps. Undoubtedly, it
means that there's someone around. But have you ever wondered why it occurs to us that it's
someone else's footsteps, not ours
According to a new study published in the journal Nature in September, this phenomenon arises
from a function in our brain to ignore the noise we make ourselves.
In order to explore how our brain does this, a group of scientists carried out an experiment with
mice at Duke University. The research centered on an intuition—that we are usually unaware of the
sound of our own footsteps—as a vehicle for understanding larger neural phenomena: how this
behavior reveals the ability to monitor, recognize, and remember the sound of one's own movements
in relation to those of their larger environments.
In the experiment, researchers controlled the sounds a group of mice could hear, reported
Science Daily. During the first several days, the mice would hear the same sound each time they took
a step. This was just like “running on a tiny piano with each key playing exactly the same note”,
senior study author Richard Mooney, a professor of neurobiology at Duke University, told Live
Science.
Scientists found that their auditory cortex—the area of the brain that processes sound—became
active at first but decreased its response to the sound after two or three minutes when the mice
became familiar with it.
“It's almost like they were wearing special headphones that could filter out the sound of their
own movements,” David Schneider, an assistant professor at the Center for Neural Science at New
York University, told HuffPost.
But once the sound changed, their auditory cortex became active again. This suggests that the
“sensory filter” in a mouse's brain could help it detect new sounds or abnormal noise in the
environment easily after tuning out familiar sounds.
“For mice, this is really important,” said Schneider. “They are prey animals, so they really need
to be able to listen for a cat creeping up on them, even when they're walking and making noise.”
Being able to ignore the sounds of one's own movements is likely important for humans as well.
But the ability to predict the sounds of our own actions is also important for more complex human
behaviors such as speaking or playing an instrument.
“When we learn to speak or to play music, we predict what sounds we're going to hear—such as
when we prepare to strike keys on a piano—and we compare this to what we actually hear,” explains
12
Schneider. “We use mismatches between expectation and experience to change how we play—and
we get better over time because our brain is trying to minimize these errors.”
63.What can be discovered about mice in the experiment
A. Their brain responds inactively to the familiar sounds.
B. They are able to detect sounds other animals don't notice.
C. They cannot identify different sounds except their own footsteps.
D. Different areas of their brain are responsible for different sounds.
64.What's the function of the sensory filter
A. Getting used to abnormal or unfamiliar sounds.
B. Ignoring the sounds made by our companions.
C. Identifying the sounds from a larger environment.
D. Being sensitive to the sounds of our own movement.
65.Why can a good symphony conductor immediately recognize it when a wrong note is played
A. He has the ability to match the wrong note with the instrument player.
B. He has an intuition that he should ignore the sound of his own movement.
C. He has a low expectation and knows where players are likely to make errors.
D. He has a good prediction of how each note should be played in the orchestra.
66.What can be inferred from the passage
A. Noise-filtering ability ensures us a quiet and undisturbed environment.
B. The ability to ignore familiar noises helps to detect potential dangers.
C. The activeness of auditory cortex determines our activity performance.
D. Sound-predicting ability seems not so important for humans as for animals.
Section C
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box.
Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
A. Many of us just drive on as we have right of way.
B. It is this social aspect that makes many people suspicious about driverless cars.
C. The latest robot cars are able to make the necessary eye contact with a human driver.
D. Humans are always suspicious about new technologies of which they have little experience.
E. Even many people with suspicion accept that emotionless AVs could cause fewer accidents than
13
we humans.
F. These safety-first robot cars could become victims of their own politeness and end up being
bullied and ignored by aggressive, impatient humans.
Would You Bully a Driverless Car or Show It Respect
Say you're driving down a two-way street and there's a truck unloading a delivery in the opposite
lane. The oncoming traffic needs to pull out into your lane to overtake.
What do you do
67.________ Eventually one of us feels charitable and slows down to allow the oncoming car to
overtake and give permission with a quick flash of headlights or a wave of the hand.
But what if the car waiting patiently behind the parked truck is a driverless or autonomous
vehicle Will this robot car be able to understand what you mean when you flash your lights or wave
your hands
Its sensors could decide that it's only safe to overtake when there's no oncoming traffic at all. On
a busy road at school home time, this may be never, leading to increasingly angry drivers queuing
behind. 68.________ This is one of the conclusions to be drawn from research carried out by Dr
Chris Tennant of the psychological and behavioural science department at the London School of
Economics.
His Europe-wide survey finds that nearly two-thirds of drivers think machines won't have
enough common sense to interact with human drivers, and more than two-fifths think a robot car
would remain stuck behind our assumed parked truck for a long time.
Driving isn't just about technology and engineering, it's about human interactions and
psychology. The road is a social space. 69.________
“If you view the road as a social space, you will consciously negotiate your journey with other
drivers. People who like that negotiation process appear to feel less comfortable engaging with AVs
than with human drivers,” says Mr. Tennant in his report.
70.________A statistic often trotted out (动不动就搬出) is that human error is responsible for
more than 90% of accidents, with our tendency to road anger, tiredness and lack of concentration.
IV. Summary Writing (10')
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea and the
14
main point(s) of the passage. Use your own words as far as possible.
71.
How to Choose the Right Campsite in Spring
Spring is a magical time for camping. The world awakens with fresh greenery and vibrant
wildlife, offering a unique escape from the daily grind. However, spring weather and terrain also
present specific challenges. To ensure a safe and enjoyable trip, choosing the right campsite requires
extra consideration.
First and foremost, you must prioritize elevation and drainage. Spring is synonymous with
melting snow and increased rainfall, which can turn a picturesque meadow into a mud pit or, worse,
a flood zone. Therefore, always avoid low-lying areas, dry riverbeds, and the banks of streams or
lakes. Water levels can rise rapidly without warning. Instead, look for elevated, well-drained ground.
For example, a slight slope is ideal, as it allows water to run off, keeping your tent floor dry.
Shelter from the elements is also critical. Spring weather is notoriously fickle, capable of
shifting from warm sunshine to cold winds or sudden showers in minutes. When scouting a location,
look for natural windbreaks such as dense groves of trees or large rock formations. These will shield
you from biting winds. At the same time, practice your “look up” routine: inspect trees for
“widowmakers”—dead branches that can be dislodged by spring storms—and avoid camping
directly under them.
Finally, consider the balance between sun and shade. In early spring, nights can still be bitterly
cold. Choosing a spot that will receive the first rays of morning sunlight can help warm your tent
quickly. Conversely, as the day warms up, some shade will keep your camp comfortable and prevent
food from spoiling too quickly in the fluctuating temperatures.
Selecting a campsite in spring is an exercise in preparation and observation. This careful
selection allows you to fully immerse yourself in the season's beauty—the budding leaves, the
rushing streams, and the crisp, fresh air—making for an unforgettable spring adventure.

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
Welcome to my review channel. My name’s Greg and don’t forget to click on the thumbs up
icon if you like my video reviews. Today I’m going to be reviewing the new E series 9000 from
Fabtran. I’ve had it for about a week now and I just want to tell you a few things about it and give
you my opinion. Now, amazingly enough, you don’t need to use a remote to operate this—you just
need to wave your hand and use gestures to change the channel, the volume and that kind of thing. It’
s a great feature, but to be perfectly honest, I don’t use it. I mean, imagine if someone walked into
the room while I was waving at my TV; they’d think I was crazy! So I just use the normal remote
and I’m glad to say that they include one of those with the package. And here it is—just looks like a
normal remote, really. Lots of buttons that you’ll never use. Anyway, let’s talk about the quality of
the image and the sound. Those are the really important things, right I’m going to turn it on and, all
being well, it’s going to work. There! Now, to tell the truth, the sound quality is not the best in the
world, but it’s not the worst either and, actually, I think that given the price, it’s fine. The image
quality, however, is fantastic. The colours are lively and, quite frankly, it’s got one of the best
pictures I’ve ever seen, certainly at this price point.

Questions
11. Which of the following has the speaker never tried
12. What does the speaker think of the image quality
13. What is the speaker mainly talking about
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
One of the most important celebrations for me is New Year’s Eve in Brazil, on 31st December.
My mum is English and my dad is Brazilian … so we live in England, but we usually go to Brazil for
New Year … I really love it! I think the celebrations are especially fantastic in Rio de Janeiro. We
stay in a friend’s apartment in Rio—and it’s usually boiling—often more than 30°C! Something I
love about the New Year festivities is that everyone dresses up … but always white, everyone wears
white … And everyone goes down to the beach in the evening, when it’s dark. There are probably
20
about two million people on Copacabana beach … all dressed in white. It looks amazing … And,
there’s a lot of music on the beach and people bring flowers and candles. You throw the flowers into
the sea and also put the candles on the water, so that they float out away from the beach. It looks
really lovely—with all the candles on the water. And the atmosphere is surprisingly peaceful at this
point in the evening. The food is also a really important part of the evening, too. You can buy food
that people cook on the beach during the evening. Typical food for New Year is a spicy chicken and
rice dish which is delicious … Sometimes you can also find a tasty dessert made of maracujá which
is a kind of fruit. At midnight, there is a big firework display which I love most—it’s really exciting.
And then, of course, the party continues … all through the night, until the next morning.

Questions
14. What is the speaker mainly talking about
15. What do people in Rio de Janeiro do on the last day of the year
16. Which of the following is the speaker’s favourite
Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.
M: So how are your New Year’s Resolutions going then, Hannah
W: Mm …well, quite positive. I’ve started working with a personal trainer!
M: Wow! What made you decide to do that
W: I just suddenly decided. I’m always starting going to the gym and then not keeping it up, so I
decided I needed to try something new. My husband was going to buy me this fancy new phone for
Christmas, but then I asked him to pay for some classes with a personal trainer instead.
M: But you’re not overweight—I don’t know why you’re so worried.
W: Yeah, but I’m totally unfit, I mean. I can’t even run for the bus and I kind of need to tone up my
muscles and stuff.
M: And is it good
W: Well, I’ve only been three times so far, but, yes, it’s better than I expected, actually. The trainer,
Adam, is really nice and he looks at your overall fitness and tells you where you need to develop
strength before you can build up your fitness more. So, um, for example, I stand on my feet in a bit
21
of a funny way and so I have to do special ankle-strengthening exercises to improve the way I stand;
and that will help me to be able to move better and get fitter.
M: Sounds cool getting that kind of personalized advice. But the trainer must be super-fit himself.
Don’t you feel a bit inferior—you know, not being very fit yourself
W: Not really. He’s very, very encouraging and the targets he sets are quite manageable, so you don’
t get demotivated. And it’s fun, actually. The gym normally bores me to death, but the time passes
really quickly because the exercises are really varied and you have to do them quickly one after
another, moving really quickly from one machine to the other, and you’re chatting a lot of the time.
So, yeah, it’s really good.
M: Oh well, good for you! Let me know how it goes.
Now listen again.
Questions
17. What made the woman decide to work with a personal trainer
18. Why is the woman so worried
19. According to the woman, how does the trainer, Adam, help her
20. What does the woman think of the targets that Adam sets
That’s the end of listening comprehension.
