“What’s your name ” asked the Judge. Tom got his voice back and told him.

Many people may throw away the pits inside fruits after eating them, but inheritors of nut carving (核雕继承
人) have turned them into artworks instead.
Weifang nut carving goes back to the Qing Dynasty. During that time, an old imperial craftsman (皇家手艺人)
Wang Dayan spread the skill to the local people in Shandong Province. Craftsmen back then often used peach pits
(桃核) to show off their artistic skills. Because of the high level of carving skills needed, the traditional culture and
its rich artistic theme, Weifang nut carving was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (国家非物质文化遗
产) in 2008.
“One nut, from 0.8 to 6 centimeters long, can be made into fan pendants, earrings, buttons, seals and so on.”
said Tan Wanhai,48, an inheritor of Weifang nut carving. Tan has studied the art of nut carving for25 years and has
created many nut carvings.
However, the craftsman also said that bringing this kind of artworks to life is not easy. “Unlike some pits like
olive (橄税) pits which have a at surface, each peach pit has its own special texture (质地) like human fingerprints,”
Tan said, adding that craftsmen have to study each peach pit to carefully pan out their artwork.
Nut carving craftsmen also need to have knowledge in many areas. According to Tan, they have to master
skills in painting, seal carving and calligraphy from many traditional cultures.
Thanks to their creative design and fresh ideas, Weifang nut carving artworks have been increasingly
welcomed by people in China. More people are learning the art and have even become inheritors to pass down the
第 4页/共 15页
skill to young people.
“Now, the number of inheritors is about 1000. But I believe it could be bigger. More craftsmen now give up
the tradition of passing down the skill only through the family and open it up to anyone who is interested in
learning the skill.” said Tan.

① A tree has roots (根). People have roots, too. If you get to the root of a problem, you will solve it. It’s the
same thing with words. Dig deeply into a big, unknown word and you will understand where it came from.
②As readers, especially those reading in a second language, we need to deal with the text as if we were
detectives (侦探) who are just looking for information to unlock the unknown. Like any good detective arriving on
the crime scene, the first thing to do when meeting a new and difficult word is to judge (判断) the situation, to look
at everything that is known and see if it helps us to understand what it means.
第 5页/共 15页
③ As you know, prefixes (前缀) and suffixes (后缀) can be added to the beginning or end of words to change
the meaning. Know them, and you will have the word building power. But root words are the key. Take time to
learn a few of these, put them in your memory, and you will become a master word detective.
④ Let’s look at one common root word used in English. “Alter” from the Latin word means “other”. When
you meet this root word, you know that the bigger word has something to do with “other”. Examine the word
“alternate”. Can you find the Latin root in it If you and your friend like to eat out, first you pay and the other pays
the next time. You are alternating paying. If you go to the movies on alternate Saturdays, you go on one Saturday,
but not the other Saturday. If you have no alternative, you have no other choice.
⑤ Learn as many root words as possible in the language you are studying. Then use your “rooting for words”
skills. Like any new skill, practice and hard work are always paid back.
13. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to (所指)
A. A new and difficult word.
B. The crime scene.
C. The situation.
14. If Jim and Lily go to the movies, which one below is “alternating paying”
A. They each pay half.
B. They take turns to pay.
C. Jim pays every time.
15. How does the writer explain his ideas about root words
A. By giving a fact. B. By telling a story. C. By taking an example.
16. Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the text
A. B. C.
(二)阅读下面短文,根据短文内容,从下列选项中选出能填入文中空白处的最佳选项。选项中
有-项为多余选项。

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing our lives in many ways. For example, AI robots can help with
housework, play games like chess or Go, and even write stories or poems. In the future, AI systems may replace
some jobs that humans do now. However, they cannot replace all human work because machines lack creativity and
emotions.
In China, the virtual human industry is growing rapidly. According to a research report by QbitAI, it is
estimated that the overall market size of China’s virtual humans will reach 270 billion yuan by 2030. These virtual
humans are not real, but they share similar identities with us and work in different fields of our daily lives,
including education, broadcasting, and business.
Some virtual humans have become idols in real life due to their perfect image and interesting setups. For
instance, Luo Tianyi, a virtual singer, has over 5 million followers on Sina Weibo. When she held a concert in
Shanghai in 2018, more than 10,000 fans waved glow sticks and cheered for her.
Despite their popularity, there is still much room for development for virtual humans. They need to improve in
areas such as interaction and emotional expression to better serve people’s needs.

Dear Mr. Wang,
第 14页/共 15页
I’m Li Lei, and I’m writing to apply for the volunteer activity. I’d love to help at the old people’s home,
because I enjoy talking with the elderly and want to bring them warmth.
I like singing and listening to stories. These hobbies let me sing old songs for them and listen to their life
stories patiently. Last winter, I volunteered there and learned that small care can make them happy. I’m outgoing
and responsible, so I believe I can do the job well.
I really hope to join you.
Yours,
