Three weeks ago, Paul Buxton went into hospital in Gibraltar to have surgery to remove a tumour (肿瘤). While the procedure itself was fairly routine, the circumstances of the operation were extraordinary — as it was performed by a surgeon 1,500 miles away in London.
Buxton, 62, is the first patient to benefit from remote robotic surgery in the UK and said that it was a “privilege to be part of medical history”.
After being diagnosed with cancer shortly after Christmas, he was told that he would have to join the lengthy waiting list and travel to England for care. However, Buxton was given the opportunity to be the first patient have the treatment remotely and was operated on by a leading robotic surgeon, Professor Prokar Dasgupta, who sat at a console (控制台) in London. The console was connected to a surgical robot in Gibraltar with a camera attached. Surgical robots help smooth out shaky hand movements and can perform smaller and more precise incisions (切口) than the human hand.
A team in Gibraltar were ready to take over as a precaution in case the connection dropped but Dasgupta said the operation went to plan and it was “almost as if I was there”.
Dasgupta described the surgery as a “milestone” and said: “This is a historic moment. We operated on a patient in Gibraltar from The London Clinic 2,400km away using a robot. The robot is completely controlled from a console, using high-speed lines with a time delay of, would you believe it, only 0.06 seconds.”
The technology could one day be widely used to improve treatment all over the world. “This is very good news for patients in Gibraltar and other remote areas. I think it is very, very exciting. The benefit is going to be significant,” he added. Since the “test run” on Buxton, Dasgupta has conducted remote surgery twice more and will perform the procedure again on March 14, the first live-streamed one.
24.What’s special about Buxton’s surgery

C.Routine. D.Eventful.
26.Why was a team in Gibraltar ready during the surgery
A.To assist Dasgupta with the operation.
B.To witness the historic moment.
C.To monitor the patient’s condition.
D.To take over in case of technical failure.
27.What does the underlined phrase “test run” in the last paragraph mean
A.Standard operation. B.Pilot operation.
C.Live operation. D.Simulated operation.

The sustainable village of the future, if Martina Waldemar and Joao Almeida have any say about it, will have solar panels, earthen buildings, and a form of regenerative agriculture that copies nature to produce climate-friendly food. The field hands who work there will earn wages well above what’s standard for this rural area of Portugal. There will be coworking space with fast internet. “The life can be easy,” Mr. Almeida says of his family’s project, which they call Gandum Village.
Buying local is one goal of a new project called Rural Revive, a private conservation effort where tourists stay in fashionable, low-impact rooms — and the project is developing into a service center for a desert economy. But the purpose of Rural Revive is not just economic. At the same time, it trains locals such as Elrico Bekeur in horticulture (园艺) and enterprise.
Reinhold Mangundu began Rural Revive when he remembers sitting by a bonfire, listening to his father tell him about the forest and birds of his birthplace in his country. Those village fires lit a desire in him to restore and regenerate the earth and wildlife that he could only imagine. “I believe it’s time we start building beautiful stories about the future and use those stories of the future to address our current problems,” he says.
Mr. Bekeur grows a garden with an irrigation system feeding a jungle of greenery with the knowledge he has learned from Rural Revive about growing fruits and vegetables in the desert earth. “I’m hoping in my heart that my neighborhood will all start growing their own produce, their own food for themselves,” he says.
But unlike past Utopian collectives, ecovillages like Gandum Village and Rural Revive are decidedly practical. “Ultimately, we all have to be living in ecovillages,” says Daniel Greenberg. “They’re not isolating themselves from the mainstream world; they want the public to come and stay a while — or at least buy their produce. They’re trying to create culture, stories about how we live locally and globally in harmony with each other and the planet.”
28.What does Paragraph 1 focus on
A.All jobs will be carried out remotely. B.A sustainable life can be enjoyable.
C.Climate is friendly to agriculture. D.Eco-friendly villages need high-paid farmers.
29.What is the intention of Reinhold’s Rural Revive
A.To recall his past childhood life. B.To gain economic profits.
C.To solve various global issues. D.To attract tourists to the deserts.
30.How did Mr. Bekeur benefit from Rural Revive
A.Getting financial support for his greenhouse.
B.Receiving training of planting in deserts.
C.Cooperating in building his irrigation system.
D.Growing enough food for his community.
31.What’s Daniel’s attitude towards Ecovillages
A.Doubtful. B.Critical. C.Approving. D.Unconcerned.
D
“I’d play Cabot more. But she just won’t hustle (猛冲).” I overheard the coach of my girls’ softball team say these words. Me, no hustle How could anyone think that I was flabbergasted. I had more hustle than any other teens I knew!
It’s true I didn’t really like softball. I loved the part where you went up to bat to hit the ball. But the rest of the game — where you had to stand out in the field hoping no balls would fly your way because then you might have to catch them — was less thrilling to me. Worse, I was terrible at it, to the harm of the team. Mostly I just stared at the treetops past the field, thinking of whatever story I was writing at the moment. This is how I was often hit in the head with balls, and ended up sitting in the trench.
But did this indicate a lack of hustle I’d been writing stories for as long as I could remember. I had already written dozens of short stories and even novels, one of which I was particularly proud of, about the princess of a foreign land who needed the help of a handsome, lonely knight (骑士) to save her throne (王冠). While I couldn’t say my commitment to sports was very strong, can Coach say I didn’t have any hustle
After that game, we were on the bus ride home. I spent the long, dusty ride cheerfully filling my teammates in on the latest chapter of Princess and the Lonely Knight, comforting them after our terrible loss, and giving them something to look forward to: not our next game, but the next chapter. They weren’t alone in their anticipation. I couldn’t wait to get home to write it! That’s when it hit me: Coach was right. I had all the hustle for things I actually cared about. But sports Not so much.
I was quitting softball. My heart wasn’t in it. I was only hurting the team — and myself — by spending time doing an activity I didn’t enjoy, when I could be doing what really mattered: hustling at what I loved.
32.What does the underlined word “flabbergasted” mean in Paragraph 1
A.Entertained. B.Convinced. C.Astonished. D.Amused.
33.What did Cabot usually do while in the ball field
A.Jump at the chance to hit the ball. B.Expect to catch the flying ball timely.
C.Consider the details of her story content. D.Imagine a knight’s saving her from a ball hit.
34.What made Cabot understand her coach
A.The interest of her teammates in her novel.
B.The failure of her team in the softball game.
C.The expectation of the teammates for the next game.
D.The loss of her coach’s confidence in her.
35.What does the author suggest us do
A.Avoid identifying yourself as a quitter.
B.Pursue what you have true passion in.
C.Follow your heart in a competitive sport.
D.Trust your courage to make self judgements.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In the fast-paced rhythm of modern life, the act of eating has often become a hurried and mindless routine. 36 Mindful eating, rooted in ancient practices, offers a refreshing alternative—a pathway to improved well-being and a deeper connection with our food.
The journey into mindful eating begins with the simple act of pausing. 37 Sit comfortably, take a few deep breaths, and distance from electronic devices or work-related materials. This pause sets the tone for a mindful eating experience, creating a space where you can fully engage with the nourishment (养分) and the present moment.
Rather than mindlessly consuming large quantities of food, use visual cues (提示,暗示),such as the size of your palm or a closed fist, to measure appropriate serving sizes. 38
As you eat, tune in to your body’s fullness signals. Instead of sticking to external cues or rigid meal schedules, let your body guide you. Don’t forget to chew thoroughly. It supports the digestive process by breaking down food into smaller particles, making it easier for your body to absorb nutrients. 39 Aim to chew each bite at least 20 times. By adopting a more leisurely approach to meals, you invite a sense of relaxation into your dining experience.
Among the focus on food, it’s crucial to extend mindfulness to hydration (水合作用). Drinking water is an inseparable part of the eating experience. Before, during, and after your meal, take moments to hydrate. Mindful hydration complements the act of eating, contributing to overall well-being and ensuring that your body is adequately nourished and hydrated.
40 It becomes a mindfulness practice that fuels not only your body but also your soul.
A.Common as it is, it is unhealthy.
B.Mindful eating goes beyond the act of consuming food.
C.This approach emphasized on the quantity rather than the quality of your food.
D.Before diving into your meal, take a moment to create a specific space for eating.
E.By dedicating time to eat without multitasking, you honour the food on your plate.
F.Portion awareness is not about restriction but about a balanced relationship with food.
G.Additionally, it provides your brain with the time it needs to register feelings of fullness.

“But, Mummy, I can’t just walk out in the middle of a game!” protested Mavis, still panting (喘气) after running all the way home.
“You shouldn’t be playing the game in the first place,” Mrs. Muntari stopped cooking and looked at Mavis.
“But, Mum, I want to play football. Why can’t I You never tell Adibe or Senzo not to play football. I had to leave the game at half time and rush back so you wouldn’t get angry with me,” said Mavis.
“They are boys and you’re not! It is as simple as that. Boys and girls have different roles to play. I have 11 hungry mouths to feed and I need your help!” Mrs. Muntari tasted the porridge and added some more water. “You’re the oldest girl not working, so it is your job to help me around the home. That is the way of our people. Now go and fry some more chicken. Kulu had to help me since you were not here. She burnt her finger and was still crying. I even had to ask your cousin from next door to come and help me.”
At the dinner table, Adibe and Senzo were excitedly talking about today’s game, while eating the chicken that Mavis had fried. They both agreed that Mavis scored in the first half with a power shot from halfway line. It was a great goal as their team was losing 1-0 at that time.
Dad came home then and told the boys that he saw news in the local paper about football scouts (球探) from England visiting Ghana. These scouts had asked to be allowed to visit various schools to look for players of the future. Adibe and Senzo looked at each other and cheered, “Wow, I’m going to be like Essien!” and started arguing which one would make it as a superstar.
