In a small hole lived a young rabbit named Pip. Pip was afraid of many things: foxes, wolves, loud noises. But most of all, he feared storms. When the sky turned gray and the wind began to blow, Pip would hide in the deepest part of his hole, shaking. His mother would comfort him, “The storm will pass. It always does.”
One afternoon, Pip was far from home. The sky was blue. Everything was peaceful. Then, without warning, the wind appeared. The air grew heavy. Pip’s ears went up. Storm was coming. He started running. But the storm was faster. Rain began to fall—first slow drops, then a flood. Lightning quickly split the sky. Pip froze. His legs wouldn’t move.
Then he heard a small squeak (吱). He looked around and saw a baby squirrel (松鼠), shaking under a leaf, alone and scared. Pip’s own fear was still there, but now there was something else—a need to help. He hopped to the squirrel. “Follow me! I know a place!” Together, they ran. Pip led the squirrel to a hollow log (原木) he knew. They hid inside just as the rain poured down. For a long time, the squirrel pressed against him, shaking. But Pip didn’t shake anymore. He was too busy being brave for someone else.
When the storm passed and the sun came out, Pip led the squirrel back to its tree. His mother thanked Pip again and again.
Pip hopped home. His mother was waiting. “I was so worried,” she said. “I’m okay,” Pip said. And he was. More than okay. He had faced the storm. Not because he wasn’t afraid, but because someone needed him to.

A. Because the wind wasn’t strong enough.

C. Because Pip’s mother came to find him.
D. Because he needed to help the squirrel.
29.How did Pip probably feel at the end of the story
A. Upset. B. Lonely. C. Proud. D. Curious.
30.What can we learn from the story
A. Squirrels and rabbits are good friends.
B. Helping others can let us grow.
C. People should put themselves first.
D. People can easily overcome fears.

City noise is everywhere in our life. It never stops. World Health Organization says that loud noise, like that from traffic or tools, can be a very harmful type of pollution. For example, it can make people feel more stressed, have trouble sleeping, and even cause heart problems. From cars to clocks, city noise is also making life difficult for some animals, especially for spiders (蜘蛛).
Spiders make special webs that are not very sticky. They wait in their webs for hunting. Then, they quickly move to catch small insects. To do this, spiders need to feel the vibrations (震动) right away when insects touch their webs. But their webs often stick to trees, rocks and buildings. These objects are like highways for vibrations caused by environmental noise like traffic. If there’s too much noise around, it can be hard for spiders to notice the tiny insects they want to catch.
But nature is full of surprises! Scientists found city spiders making changes in their webs. The spiders solved the noise problem by creating greater webs with stronger silk and more connection points. It is just like how people hang thick curtains (窗帘) to block out traffic noise. Spiders just improved their webs instead! These improvements of new webs act like natural noise-canceling headphones (降噪耳机) sending fewer vibrations to spiders. As a result, spiders can better feel the importance of vibrations from insects.
A team led by scientist Brandi Pessman at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln found out about this clever change. Their study helps us learn more about how animals deal with environmental noise. It might inspire better soundproofing (隔音的) ideas for humans too!

A. Reduce. B. Measure. C. Control. D. Collect.

C. Because they can deal with more noise.
D. Because they can use fewer connection points.
35.What’s the best title of the passage
A. Who Kills Insects: Noise! B. Spiders’ Clever Change for Noise!

Good rain knows its time right; it falls when spring arrives. The beautiful dance, Joyful Rain, based on ancient poems, has landed on the stage of the 2026 CCTV Spring Festival Gala (晚会). The dance is not a chance success. Instead, it’s the careful work of teachers and students at Zhejiang Conservatory of Music. The idea comes from two old Chinese poems—Du Fu’s Spring Night Joyful Rain and Wei Zhuang’s Pusa Man.
The most eye-catching part is the bamboo hats with bead curtains (珠帘). Each hat is 90 centimeters wide, 1.5 meters long, and weighs about 2.5 kilograms. At first, the heavy hats and easy-to-tangle curtains were the biggest challenges for the dancers. They had to practice for hours every day to control the hats well. They even practiced 10 hours a day to get every move right, until their bodies remembered the steps. The costumes (服装) are beautiful and light. The music uses the ruan and erhu to paint a lively spring scene.
This is the fourth time that the dance team has appeared on the CCTV Spring Festival Gala. Joyful Rain has shown the beauty of Chinese art to the world. The young dancers grow together, with older students helping younger ones practise and improve. ★ .
Through this dance, the team wants to show not just the beauty of rain, but also the deep culture and feelings that rain brings to Chinese people. Rain is not just water from the sky, it is also a sign of new life and hope. Meanwhile, right after the gala, we met the solar term (节气) “Rain Water”. Old sayings say rain on this day means a lucky year. The dance and the solar term both carry the same meaning—hope.
The dance director said, the show is a poetic answer to people’s emotional needs. It teaches us that beauty doesn’t need to be loud, and growth has its own rhythm (节奏). “Joyful rain brings spring, and good things will happen.” May this “rain” from the stage fill our whole year and may all things turn out well.
36.What were the biggest problems for the dancers at first
A. The weight and size of the hats. B. The movements and skills.
C. The time and place for practising. D. The heavy hats and curtains.
37.Which statement can be put in the blank ★ properly in the passage
A. The dancers come from different cities in China.
B. The team also works hard to pass on their skills to younger students.
C. The CCTV Spring Festival Gala is watched by millions of people.
D. Many people want to learn the dance after watching it on TV.
38.What does the underlined sentence mean in the last paragraph
A. Good things only happen on rainy days.
B. Spring comes with hope and good luck.
C. Rain shows the beauty of Chinese art.
D. It matches the solar term “Rain Water”.
39.Which ancient poem fits the theme of the passage best
A. 竹外桃花三两枝,小雨引花香。
B. 清明时节雨纷纷,路上行人欲断魂。
C. 好雨知时节,当春乃发生。
D. 天街小雨润如酥,草色遥看近却无。
40.What is NOT mentioned in this passage
A. Poems that the dance comes from.
B. Chinese culture and musical instruments.
C. Costumes and dancers’ daily practice.
D. The stage background dancers used.

Jinan, famous as the City of Springs, has grown more popular because of plenty of leisure (休闲) parks. From “pocket parks” between communities to parks in the outer areas, the government keeps trying its best to make our city greener.
41 These leisure parks open up forests, hills, rivers and lakes so that visitors can walk through nature and get closer to wildlife. This year, our city will build more than 40 different kinds of parks. More universities choose to “open their gates” and share their greenery. A university has even opened its 800,000-square-meter green land to the public, which has turned into a new park for visitors to relax.
42 For one thing, parks have become a place to spread intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) to the public. For example, Daming Lake has held several shows of Jinan’s traditional Liuzi Opera for free. Shadow Puppetry (皮影戏) is on show every day in Five Dragon Pool. 43 That’s why so many parks in Jinan provide yards for ball games, and most of them often hold fitness activities.
In addition to meeting people’s needs, park designers also add environmental protection ideas. 44 Take Huashan Wetland Park as an example. The park has reached carbon-neutral (碳中和) since 2019. It also fully reuses rainwater and creates green energy.
45 It meets people’s needs for a better living experience and makes the natural environment nicer everywhere.
A. Parks aren’t just used for leisure in Jinan. B. So parks can be good for the environment too. C. More and more people prefer to exercise indoors. D. For another, more people choose to go to the park for exercise. E. As Jinan becomes greener, “the park city” is becoming a reality. F. In Jinan, there are 323 leisure parks for people to relax and play. G. To build more houses for people, the number of the parks is falling.

Ways to Recharge
As a Grade 8 student, my school life is busy and sometimes tiring. Between endless homework and tests, I often feel exhausted and lose my energy. That’s why it’s important for me to find ways to “recharge” myself and keep moving forward.
First, I love to be close to nature on weekends. When I walk in the park, listen to the birds and feel the fresh air, all my stress melts away. Nature calms my mind and gives me new energy. Second, I choose to connect with people around me. Talking with my parents or close friends helps me share my worries and feel supported. Their warm words make me feel loved and understood.
These small ways of recharging help me stay positive and energetic. They make me ready to face challenges again, and I believe they will keep me going on my journey.
