My average screen time is eight hours and 44 minutes per day — more time than I spend sleeping. This makes me fit into the category of being “chronically online”, defined as someone
whose entire life revolves around the internet.
So I decided to change my lifestyle and use a dumbphone. Apart from making calls and taking photos, I couldn’t use the flip phone’s features unless I was connected to Wi-Fi.
The first two days of my grand experiment started on a weekend. My anxiety kicked in
immediately. I assumed I was missing out on an event. As a result, I started calling my friends and family just to make sure that I wasn’t.
I asked Lindsay Bira, a clinical health psychologist based in Florida, why my decision to downgrade initially made me more anxious.
“Being alone or disconnected from what’s going on can be read by the deep brain as a
survival threat when it really isn’t a threat,” Bira said. “It is important to learn how to tolerate the feeling of being disconnected or left out until our brain understands that it is not a problem, which allows us to self-regulate without reaching for the phone, and we develop a deeper, healthier
connection to ourselves.”
I started calling friends to hang out, rediscovering the lost art of phone conversations. It reduces miscommunication compared to texting and makes me a better listener, helping me feel more connected.
“If someone is always on their phone, they are training loved ones to lean away from them emotionally” Bira said. She emphasized the importance of eye contact, attention, and proper
feedback to make people feel truly cared for.
After the week was over, I had broken the habit of mindlessly unlocking my iPhone and opening countless apps for fresh news and information. Instead, I turned to different outlets for news at work, rather than simply scrolling through social media posts.
24 .Why did the author switch to a dumbphone
A .To reduce phone usage. B .To break internet addiction.
C .To follow a trendy lifestyle. D .To improve mental health.
25 .What does Lindsay Bira advise us to do when feeling disconnected
A .Remove threats to our survival. B .Distract ourselves with technology.
C .Accept the feeling until our brain adjusts. D .Avoid situations that can cause anxiety.
26.According to Lindsay Bira, how could a person’s frequent phone usage potentially affect their loved ones
A .Create emotional distance. B .Train them to be better listeners.
C .Make them prioritize phone conversations. D .Encourage a greater reliance on technology. 27 .Which of the following might be the most suitable title for the text
A .Reconnecting with nature and the self B .Unplugging for a tech-free lifestyle
C.Creating space for family relationships D.Disconnecting for inner peace and connection

Online shopping offers tremendous convenience but also an overwhelming number of
options. To navigate these choices, many of us rely on online reviews and ratings, believing they provide reliable information about products. But is this trust justified
Bart de Langhe, a behavioral scientist and marketing professor at ESADE in Barcelona, Spain, faced this question when shopping for a car seat for his newborn son. Confronted with a choice between a $300 car seat from a well-known brand and a $50 car seat from an unknown brand, he turned to online reviews. The positive reviews for the $300 car seat convinced him to buy it. Later, he discovered that Consumer Reports rated the $50 car seat higher in crash
protection and ease of use than the $300 one.
Curious, de Langhe teamed up with colleagues at the University of Colorado in Boulder to compare online reviews with performance reviews. They did this for 1,272 products in 120
categories — including car seats, bike helmets, blood pressure monitors, headphones, sunscreen
and smoke alarms — which could be objectively assessed. Their study, published in the Journal of Consumer Research, found a very weak link between positive online reviews and actual product
performance.
As de Langhe explained in Science Daily, “The likelihood that an item with a higher user rating performs objectively better than an item with a lower user rating is only 57 percent. A
correspondence of 50 percent would be random, so user ratings provide very little insight about objective product performance.” He further elaborated in a TEDxESADE Talk that many
high-rated products perform poorly and vice versa. This discrepancy is partly due to fake reviews and the influence of brand reputation, packaging and price on user opinions. Only a small group of consumers — the ones holding the most extreme positive and negative opinions — tend to leave
reviews. This is why we often see a lot of 1-and 5-star reviews on products.
De Langhe recommends relying less on the recommendations of other consumers. This
doesn’t mean we should stop reading reviews altogether, but we should avoid stressing over minor rating differences and feel less compelled to read every review before making a purchase.
28 .What motivated de Langhe to research the reliability of online reviews
A .His interest in marketing techniques.
B .His skepticism about certain famous brands.
C .His shopping for a car seat for his son.
D .His cooperation with Consumer Reports.
29 .What did the study by de Langhe and his colleagues reveal about online reviews
A .They were objective enough.
B .They barely reflected product quality.
C .They mostly featured neutral opinions.
D .They were heavily influenced by companies.
30 .What does the underlined word “discrepancy” in paragraph 4 most probably mean
A .Inaccuracy. B .Preference.
C .Trend. D .Difference.
31 .What advice does de Langhe offer regarding the use of online reviews
A .Identifying their source.
B .Paying less attention to ratings.
C .Focusing on detailed reviews.
D .Avoiding reading them entirely.

The Ediacaran Period, spanning from about 635 to 541 million years ago, was a crucial time in Earth’s history. It marked a transformative era during which complex, multicellular
organisms (多细胞生物) emerged, setting the stage for an explosion of life. But how did this explosion of life unfold
Researchers from the University of Rochester in New York, US, have uncovered strong
evidence that Earth’s magnetic field (磁场) was in a highly unusual state when the large animals of the Ediacaran Period diversified and thrived. According to John Tarduno, a professor of
geophysics in the university’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, one of the most remarkable life forms during the Ediacaran Period was the Ediacaran fauna — a handful of
strange creatures found in Australia, Canada and the English Midlands. They were notable for looking like early animals and some even reached more than a meter in size and were able to move, indicating that they probably needed more oxygen compared to earlier life forms.
Tarduno and his team used innovative strategies and techniques to examine the strength of the magnetic field by studying magnetism locked in ancient feldspar and pyroxene crystals (辉石晶体) from a rock called anorthosite. These crystals contain magnetic particles (粒子) that
preserve magnetization from the time the minerals were formed. By dating the rocks, researchers can construct a timeline of the development of Earth’s magnetic field. Their data indicates that
Earth’s magnetic field during the Ediacaran Period was the weakest known to date, lasting for at least 26 million years.
A weak magnetic field makes it easier for charged particles from the sun to strip away lightweight atoms such as hydrogen from the atmosphere. If hydrogen loss is significant, more oxygen may remain in the atmosphere. Instead of reacting with hydrogen to form water vapor. These reactions can lead to a buildup of oxygen over time.
The research suggests that during the Ediacaran Period, the extremely weak magnetic field caused a loss of hydrogen over at least tens of millions of years. This loss may have led to
increased oxygen in the atmosphere and ocean, enabling more advanced life forms to emerge.
32 .What did the researchers aim to find out
A .The origin of multicellular organisms.
B .The link between oxygen and ecosystems.
C .The impact of Earth’s magnetic field on life.
D .The effects of climate change on biodiversity.
33 .How did the researchers conduct the study
A .By analyzing evolution of Ediacaran fauna.
B .By examining magnetism in ancient minerals.
C .By modeling the atmospheric changes in the lab.
D .By comparing different periods in Earth’s history.
34 .What does the underlined phrase “strip away” in paragraph 4 most probably mean
A .Remove. B .Cover. C .Gather. D .generate.
35 .What is the last paragraph mainly about
A .The significance of the research.
B .A suggestion for further research.
C .An analysis of the research method.
D .An explanation for the research results.

How to Feel Better About the Way You Look
If you feel insecure about the way you look, you aren’t alone. 36 They can easily contribute to feelings of insecurity. If you would like to become more confident about your body and looks, there are steps you can take to change how you think about your body.

yourself down a lot. You may engage in negative self-talk, which means you find yourself saying things to yourself like, “I can’t believe how fat you are” throughout the day. Try to replace
negative self talk with positive self talk. 38
Provide your body with nourishment (营养). Many people with low self-esteem (自尊) try dieting or healthy eating as a means to change their bodies. 39 Think of healthy eating as a way of nourishing your body instead of a way of forcing your body to change.
40 If you’re feeling poorly about yourself, support is important. Seek out friends and family members who are positive. Try to spend time with people who feel good about their bodies and are generally positive.
A .Turn to people around you for help.
B .Surround yourself with supportive people.
C .People have things about their bodies they dislike.

As the family watched their favorite TV show together, they heard Mark’s dad’s trademark cough. Every time he heard that sound, Mark’s heart felt heavy. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat, trying to focus on the show, but his mind continued to drift to thoughts ofall the damage his dad was doing to his lungs by smoking.
Mark just didn’t understand. His dad was a great dad — he spent a lot of his spare time with him playing outside and watching TV. Plus, he was really smart, so why would he be so stupid as to risk his health by smoking so much What if it caused a serious disease Had he ever
considered how heartbroken it would make him and his mom
Mark’s mind wandered back to a conversation he had overheard between his parents. His mom had been pleading (恳求) with his dad, her voice full of worry. “You need to think about your health, for Mark’s sake if not for your own,” she had said. But his dad just brushed her off, saying he was too stressed to quit.
One evening, Mark approached his mom to discuss the issue. “I’ve tried to persuade him to quit,” Mark’s mom expressed with a sigh. “But he always gets annoyed whenever I bring up the subject.” She looked tired and defeated. “At least your dad is considerate with his smoking; he
never does it indoors or around others. He even changes his clothes when coming home to prevent us from smelling the smoke. Despite that, it’s still so hard on him, on us …”
The next day at school, Mark was playing basketball with his classmate Tim on the court. “Hey, does either of your parents smoke ” he asked. “Yeah, my dad smokes, but he’s cut down in the past year,” replied Tim. “Oh, how did he do that ” Mark asked curiously. “I don’t really know what happened. I guess he just realized it was time for a change,” said Tim, as he threw the ball back to Mark. This gave Mark a ray of hope and an idea.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为 150 个左右;
Mark decided to take action, hoping to encourage his dad to change.

My average screen time is eight hours and 44 minutes per day — more time than I spend sleeping. This makes me fit into the category of being “chronically
online”, defined as someone whose entire life revolves around the internet.
根据第五段““Being alone or disconnected from what’s going on can be read by the deep brain as a survival threat when it really isn’t a threat,” Bira said. “It is important to learn how to tolerate the feeling of being disconnected or left out until our brain understands that it is
not a problem, which allows us to self-regulate without reaching for the phone, and we develop a
deeper, healthier connection to ourselves.”
If someone is always on their phone, they are training loved ones to lean away from them emotionally” Bira said. She emphasized the importance of eye
contact, attention, and proper feedback to make people feel truly cared for. 故选 A。
根据倒数第三段“I started calling friends to hang out, rediscovering the lost art of phone conversations. It reduces miscommunication compared to texting and makes me a better listener, helping me feel more connected.

Bart de Langhe, a behavioral scientist and marketing
professor at ESADE in Barcelona, Spain, faced this question when shopping for a car seat for his newborn son. Confronted with a choice between a $300 car seat from a well-known brand and a
$50 car seat from an unknown brand, he turned to online reviews.(西班牙巴塞罗那 ESADE 大学的行为科学家、营销学教授巴特·德朗赫在为他刚出生的儿子选购汽车座椅时就遇到了这个问题。

根据第三段的句子“Their study, published in the Journal of Consumer Researc found a very weak link between positive online reviews and actual product performance. (他们发表在《消费者研究期刊》上的研究发现,正面在线评论与产品实际性能之间的联系非常微弱。)”可知,德·朗赫和同事的研究表明在线评论几乎不能反映产品质量。故选 B 项。
30 .词句猜测题。根据第四段的句子“He further elaborated in a TEDxESADE Talk that many high-rated products perform poorly and vice versa. (他在 TEDxESADE 的演讲中进一步阐述,
许多高评分产品表现不佳,反之亦然。)”和划线单词下文的内容“due to fake reviews and the influence of brand reputation, packaging and price on user opinions(由于虚假评论和品牌声誉、包装、价格对用户意见的影响)”可知,由于虚假评论和品牌声誉、包装、价格对用户意见的影响,高评分和实际表现之间存在差异,所以 discrepancy 的意思是“差异” ,与 difference 意义一致。故选 D 项。
De Langhe recommends relying less on the
recommendations of other consumers. This doesn’t mean we should stop reading reviews
altogether, but we should avoid stressing over minor rating differences and feel less compelled to read every review before making a purchase.

The Ediacaran Period, spanning from about 635 to 541 million
years ago, was a crucial time in Earth’s history. It marked a transformative era during which
complex, multicellular organisms (多细胞生物) emerged, setting the stage for an explosion of life. But how did this explosion of life unfold
“Researchers from the University of Rochester in New York, US, have uncovered strong evidence that Earth’s magnetic field (磁场) was in a highly unusual state when the large animals of the

Tarduno and his team used innovative strategies and techniques to examine the strength of the magnetic field by studying magnetism locked in ancient feldspar
and pyroxene crystals (辉石晶体) from a rock called anorthosite.( 塔都诺和他的团队采用创新的策略和技术,通过研究一种叫做斜长岩的岩石中的古老长石和辉石晶体中的磁性,来检测磁场的强度。)”
根据划线单词句中“A weak magnetic field makes it easier for charged particles from the sun to strip away lightweight atoms such as hydrogen from the atmosphere.( 弱磁场使得来自太阳的带电粒子更容易从大气中 strip away 氢等轻原子。)”
loss is significant, more oxygen may remain in the atmosphere.( 如果氢的损失是显著的,更多的氧可能留在大气中。)” 故选 A 项。
The research suggests that during the Ediacaran Period, the
extremely weak magnetic field caused a loss of hydrogen over at least tens of millions of years.
(

)This loss may have led to increased oxygen in the atmosphere and ocean, enabling more advanced life forms to emerge.( 研究表明,在埃迪卡拉纪,极弱的磁场导致了至少数千万年的氢损失这种损失可能导致大气和海洋中的氧气增加,使更先进的生命形式得以出现。)”

Mark decided to take action, hoping to encourage his dad to change. He sat down at his
desk and began to write a heartfelt letter to his dad. In the letter, he expressed his love and concern for his dad’s health, describing how worried he and his mom were about the potential
consequences of smoking. He also shared his memories of the happy times they had spent together and how much he wanted his dad to be around for a long time. Finally, he gently suggested that
his dad consider quitting smoking for his own good and for the sake of his family.
The next day, Mark found a reply from his dad on his bed. His dad had written a note
saying that he had read Mark’s letter carefully and was deeply touched by his son’s love and
concern. He admitted that he had been aware of the risks of smoking but had been too weak to
quit. However, Mark’s letter had given him the strength and motivation he needed. He promised
Mark that he would try his best to quit smoking and would seek help if necessary. Mark was
overjoyed to read his dad’s reply and felt a sense of relief wash over him.
