Chenoa Tremblay is a radio astronomer who uses radio telescopes and a specific analytical technique to study molecules (分子) in the gas layers (层) around stars. By analyzing these
molecules’ unique frequency signals, she identifies signs related to life—such as water—that are potential signs of life beyond the Earth. Additionally, she uses computers and advanced
mathematics to turn these signals into images, enabling the study of the universe in ways that human eyes can’t.
Tremblay grew up in a small town in New Hampshire. There wasn’t a lot of expectation of girls doing much outside of home. But she was a naturally very curious child. Throughout high
school, learning was hard for her most of the time. But math was always fairly easy, and she enjoyed chemistry.
Tremblay decided to study business and accounting in college. It seemed logical, but she really wasn’t sure what she’d do with it. Her roommate was studying chemistry, and she found herself helping her with her homework. Her roommate and friends eventually convinced her to
study chemistry instead.
Tremblay started volunteering for university projects to learn from teachers. That helped her figure out how to become a radio astronomer. In 2016, she got into a doctoral program for
physics and astronomy in Australia. During her program, Tremblay and her team were using a
brand-new radio telescope in Western Australia. In high school and her first years in college, she had great difficulty with physics. So it’s really funny that she ended up with a Ph. D. in the
subject. At some point in the learning process, things just started to click.

Could birds hold the key to making airplanes safer and more efficient At Princeton
University, scientists believe the answer is yes. Inspired by birds, aerospace engineer Aimy Wissa
and her team developed special flaps (襟翼) that move freely along aircraft wings. Much like tiny feathers, these flaps help planes to reduce fuel consumption, and prevent dangerous stalls (失速)。
It was from watching gannets, a type of seabird, that this idea first emerged. When flying through strong winds, these birds’ small feathers pop up, adjusting airflow and maintaining
stability. What if airplanes could do the same Wissa and her team sought to answer this question by attaching flexible plastic flaps to a remote-controlled aircraft. The results Remarkable. Not
only did the flaps reduce drag by 31% and increase lift by 45%, but they also made stalls occur more gradually, improving flight safety.
Unlike traditional wing flaps, which require mechanical systems to function, these new
flaps respond naturally to air currents. As airflow changes, they adjust automatically —just like a bird’s feathers. With extreme weather becoming more frequent due to climate change, such a
design could make airplanes more adaptable.
Nature has long driven engineering innovation. From da Vinci’s bird-like flying machines to Lilienthal’s studies of bird flight, early pioneers in flight technology drew inspiration from

Compassion has not been a traditional characteristic of sport. With its UK roots in
19th-century British public schools and universities, modern sport developed as way of creating strong military leaders, training them to develop adaptability defined in those times by iron will and biting the bullet. Fear and harsh criticism were crucial to toughening up players and soldiers alike. The “tough guy” narrative was strengthened by 20th-century media stereotypes and
Hollywood’s heroes and became rooted into sport and society.
I’ve heard countless stories like the popular culture I found when I joined the Olympic
rowing team in the mid-1990s. We were expected to suffer after mistakes or losses to show that we truly cared, and everyone believed coaches needed to be severe and unforgiving to get results. These approaches still exist. But an alternative approach with compassion at its center addresses aims of performance and wellbeing for those with greater ambitions.
This isn’t some soft option which plays down hard work, as supporters of the earlier
traditional sporting mindset might criticize. Research across branches of psychology —
behavioral, sports, positive — shows how compassion creates the strongest foundation for
adaptability and sustained performance under pressure whether in sport, the military, healthcare or business. Rather than activating our threat system which began to help us survive way back,
compassion helps us to feel safe and protected, leaving us free to learn, connect with others and start exploring what we’re capable of.
The continuous need to improve performance has led top coaches to appreciate that high performance requires levels of support to match the level of challenge. When you provide that, players start thriving while striving to achieve more. Rooted in compassion, a different
coach-athlete relationship thus develops.

Graffiti and Street Art
People have been painting and writing on walls throughout history. In prehistoric times,
