A
Climate change could have large impacts on food production across the world. Rising temperatures might boost crop production in cold regions but negatively impact production in
warmer areas. Wheat and rice — which benefit from more CO2 in the atmosphere — could see growing output, while corn and sorghum (高粱) could see a decline with warmer temperatures.
Farmers can adjust their practices to a warmer climate in four key ways:
Farmers can change WHAT they plant. This could be an entirely different type of crop: corn instead of wheat. Or a different variety of a specific crop. FOUR KEY WAYS Farmers can change WHERE crops are planted. If temperatures rise in fall, crop production can shift north or southwards towards more suitable temperatures.
Farmers can change HOW crops are managed. Giving crops the right amount of water, nutrition, and protection from insects and disease can help reduce some impacts of climate change. Farmers can change WHEN they plant. Farmers can plant earlier or later in the year, depending on when spring arrives. Adjusting planting dates requires no additional cost or work.
A recent study by experts modeled three adaptation methods — changing WHAT, changing WHEN and changing both of them. The chart below shows their impact on the output of corn,
rice, sorghum, soybean (大豆) and wheat.
These three adaptation methods can already go some way to relieve climate pressures in
some countries. But, of course, we don't only care about crop production at the global level. If farmers in particular regions — especially those that are most food-insecure — cannot adapt to climate change, this is still a major problem. So there is more we can do in the future.
1 .What should farmers change if they are short of money and labour
A .WHAT. B .WHERE. C .HOW. D .WHEN.
2 .Which crop may benefit most if farmers plant improved varieties
A .Rice. B .Corn. C .Sorghum. D .Wheat.
3 .What should be done in the future
A .To adopt the three methods. B .To help the farmers in need.
C .To focus on crop production. D .To move to colder regions.

For most of my life, I treated taste as fixed. There were things I liked and things I didn’t, and that was that.
Sticking to that belief had left me in a bit of a standstill. I stopped making time for new
hobbies or trying anything new. Salsa lessons No, thanks. Interactive theatre Not for me. But
my automatic “no” to anything that “wasn’t my thing” only kept me trapped in the same routine of work, sleep, eating, and that left me feeling a little empty.
So, in an effort to break the boredom, I began to question whether my taste was fixed at all, or whether it might be something I could train. I had read that children need 8 to 15 tries to accept a new food. Why shouldn’t the same principle apply to social activities for adults
I started small. When a friend invited me to a book club, I resisted the urge to dismiss it,
despite my longstanding dislike of reading due to dyslexia But I went anyway. I
listened to the first book on audio book and, to my surprise, enjoyed the discussion and the people. Now I spend mornings reading. Then came music and performance: jazz clubs, line dancing,
contemporary performance — all things I had previously disregarded.
Trying things you thought you wouldn’t enjoy, I found, became oddly addictive. I didn’t
love everything straight away, but I stopped saying no before I had even begun. Most recently, I tried out my local library’s chess club. I was easily 30 years younger than everyone else, but that didn’t matter. Honestly, there was nothing quite like being wiped off the board by someone who
had been playing since before your parents met. I felt more of a connection with others there than at any organized twenty-something social event I’ve attended.
Putting “try something new” in my diary once a week broke up the work-commute-collapse cycle I had accidentally built my life around. Now I simply count to five, approach the
friendliest-looking person with a “hello”, and any initial awkwardness quickly fades. Next week Who knows. Maybe magic lessons. Maybe life drawing. Maybe both.
4 .How did the author’s fixed idea affect her
A .It simplified her daily routine. B .It flattened her life into dullness.
C .It left her more time for work. D .It spared her unwanted socializing.
5 .Why did the author accept her friend’s invitation to a book club
A .To revisit a former interest in reading. B .To make a conscious shift in her life.
C .To meet her friend’s repeated requests. D .To occupy a blank in her personal calendar.
6 .How did the author feel when losing the chess game
A.Totally frustrated. B .Slightly puzzled. C.Rather embarrassed.D .Somewhat delighted. 7 .What message does the author try to convey
A .Break out of your shell. B .Learn to say no.
C .Look before you leap. D .Let go of the past.

Twice a week, Adam Knox jumps into a four-wheel-drive pickup and climbs to a forest
high in the mountains of Hawaii. “You feel like you’re in one of those adventure-type movies,”
Knox says. “This is where the native birds live.” These birds are honeycreepers. They’re in danger of going extinct because of avian (鸟类的) malaria, a disease spread to birds by mosquitoes. To
save them, the American Bird Conservancy has launched an innovative conservation project. As a drone pilot and project member, Adam Knox goes into the forest with a key mission: to release
more mosquitoes as part of a scientific intervention.
Instead of chemicals, “this technique uses mosquitoes to fight mosquitoes,” says scientist Christa Seidl, of Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project. When the mosquito project began, in 2023, helicopters were the best available means. “It’s been a long road to get here, with a lot of trial and testing,” Knox says. “But at this point, we have a system that can fly in these difficult
environments.” Plus, drones are quieter, cost less, and allow more flexibility with timing.
Honeycreepers live in Hawaii, and nowhere else. There used to be more than 50 species. “Now there are only 17,” says Chris Farmer, ABC’s Hawaii program director. Unlike
honeycreepers, mosquitoes are not native to Hawaii. As temperatures have warmed, mosquitoes have moved higher to honeycreeper habitat. A single mosquito bite can kill a honeycreeper.
The mosquitoes Knox drops into the forest are males, so they don’t bite or transmit disease. They’ve been raised in a lab and bred to carry a natural bacteria that prevents them from
reproducing with wild females. When these mosquitoes mate with wild ones, the eggs that are produced won’t hatch. “This lowers the mosquito population over time,” Seidl says, especially since most females mate only once. It also gives honeycreepers time to bounce back.
Conservationists aren’t sure how long it will take. Until then, Knox will continue doing
drone drops. And Seidl will continue tracking mosquito numbers and honeycreeper health.
“Everyone is so committed and works so hard because we understand that it is our responsibility to save these birds,” Farmer says. “And we can do that. We have the technology.”
8 .What is the function of paragraph 1
A .To emphasize the risks involved in Knox’s work.
B .To introduce the honeycreeper conservation project.
C .To describe the natural habitat of the honeycreepers.
D .To state the main threat to the honeycreepers’ survival.
9 .What do we know about the project from paragraph 2
A .Its primary objective. B .Its scientific principle.
C .Its operational approach. D .Its developmental challenges.
10 .What does the underlined phrase “bounce back” probably mean
A .Survive. B .Migrate. C .Withdraw. D .Restore.
11 .What is the passage mainly about
A .Studying bird diseases. B .Using drones in forests.
C .Saving birds with mosquitoes. D .Tracking wildlife numbers.

AI has a water problem, which worries us a lot. People are increasingly using AI tools in
their daily personal and professional lives. A significant amount of heat is produced by the energy required to power the tools. This heat is released into data centers, which provide those AI systems with the computational support and storage space they need to function.
There are no regulations for AI and no laws requiring technology companies to deal with the problem. That’s led scientists like Shaolei Ren, an associate professor at UC Riverside, to
investigate this question independently. As he notes, cooling down the data centers requires an
enormous amount of water, similar to the amount used by tens of thousands of residents (居民). “When you use water for a shower, for example, it can be repurposed,” says Ren, whose research is focused on how to make AI more socially and environmentally responsible. “When water is
evaporated (蒸发) to cool down a data center, it’s gone.”
Even before the current AI development, data centers’ water and energy demands had
steadily (稳定地) increased. In 2022, according to Google, its data centers used over five billion gallons of water, 20 percent more than in 2021; Microsoft used 34 percent more water
companywide in 2022 than in 2021.
AI stands only to compound the existing resource demand that data centers create for the global energy system: In 2026, electricity consumption at data centers because of the increasing use of AI will double the amount in 2022, the International Energy Agency says.
“I explain it in terms my kid understands,” says Ren. “If you have a conversation with
ChatGPT for 10 to 50 questions and answers, it will use about 500 milliliters of water, or the size of a standard bottle of water. This shocking water consumption shows how necessary it is for the technology industry to put more money in and develop energy-saving AI to cut down on such
waste to ensure the digital inventions don’t come at the expense of our planet’s resources.”
12 .What is the primary issue discussed in the text
A .The safety risks of AI. B .The limited computational support.
C .The energy consumption by AI. D .The high cost of building data centers.
13 .How does water used for data centers differ from shower water
A .It’s cleaner in quality. B .It cannot be reused.
C .It consumes less water. D .It’s treated with chemicals.
14 .What does the underlined word “compound” in paragraph 4 mean
A .Slow down. B .Connect with. C .Add to. D .Smooth out.
15 .What’s the purpose of Ren’s words in the last paragraph
A .To encourage the use of AI. B .To highlight the power of AI.
C .To provide the exact data for researchers. D .To call for the development of greener AI.

Just admit it. Don’t think that our mistakes are caused by others. 16 Don’t blame other people, and don’t cheat ourselves, either.
17 In order to stop the problem from getting worse, we should act quickly to
solve it. If we don’t act and deal with the problem quickly, it’ll only make us feel more stressed. Also it is necessary to make a plan ofaction and correct the mistake according to it. 18
Realize that making mistakes is the best way to learn. 19 , for they are the ones who have learned the most. The more we learn from our mistakes, the cleverer we are.
Think about what we can learn from our mistakes. 20 How can we not make the same mistake in the future When we act with a method to get a good result, do it that way next time. If we don’t, we should stop, think about it, change it and try again.
A .Those who have made the most mistakes can get an A

Lucy turned on the TV. The house was quiet because her son, Patrick, was on a school camping trip. She was surfing through TV channels when Patrick’s teacher phoned her.
“Hi, Mr Randall,” Lucy said. “Is everything okay ”
“I’m so sorry, Miss Stevens,” Mr Randall wept. “I don’t know how this happened, but Patrick is lost!”
Lucy’s heart thumped like a drum.
“What...” Lucy nervously asked. “What do you mean, Mr Randall How could he get lost ”
“I’m not sure. I already called the police, and they’re currently out there, searching the woods.”
Lucy stood. “I’m heading out there right now!”
She fetched one of the old hiking backpacks, climbed into her car and then set off.
By the time she arrived at the campsite, the sun was setting. “When did Patrick get lost ” Lucy asked as she strode toward Mr Randall.
“I know Patrick was still with us when we stopped for lunch.” Mr Randal sighed. “But I’ m not sure when he got separated from the group. When we returned to the campsite, he was
missing.” Lucy looked at the children moving among the tents. Thinking of her son out in the forest by himself brought tears to her eyes.
Lucy hiked and camped frequently when she was younger. She returned to her car and
fetched the supplies she’d packed. She had brought a flashlight, food, and water, in addition to the multi-tool and a basic first-aid kit in her backpack.
It was very dark. Lucy didn’t want to go in there alone, but Patrick’s safety depended on her. She turned on her flashlight and set offalong a narrow path leading through the trees.
The deeper Lucy walked into the forest, the more anxious she became. Lucy shivered with cold as she searched. What’s worse, her flashlight ran out of batteries hours later. She realized
now that it was safer to wait for dawn and continue then. Lucy drank water and ate some food while she made a fire to warm up.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

根据表格中“Adjusting planting dates requires no additional cost or work.(调整种植日期不需要额外的成本或工作。)”
故选 A。
文章最后一段指出“If farmers in particular regions — especially those that are most food-insecure — cannot adapt to climate change, this is still a major problem.(如果特定地区的农民(尤其是那些粮食供应最不稳定的地区农民)无法适应气候变化,那么这仍然是一个重大问题。)”
4 .B 5 .B 6 .D 7 .A
根据第二段“But my automatic “no” to anything that “wasn’t my thing” only kept me trapped in the same routine of work, sleep, eating, and that left me feeling a little empty.(但我 对任何不属于自己的事物都本能地给出“ 不行” 的拒绝,这使我只能一直重复着工作、睡觉、吃饭这样的固定模式,这让我感觉有些空虚)”可知,这位作者的固执想法使她的生活变得毫无生气,变得枯燥乏味。故选 B。
根据第三段“So, in an effort to break the boredom, I began to question whether my taste was fixed at all, or whether it might be something I could train.(因此,为了摆脱这种无聊的感觉,我开始思考自己的品味到底是否是固定不变的,还是说它其实是可以通过后天培养的)”可知,作者接受朋友邀请参加读书俱乐部是为了有意地改变自己的生活状态。故选 B。
Honestly, there was nothing quite like being wiped off the board by someone who had been playing since before your parents met. I felt more of a
connection with others there than at any organized twenty-something social event I’ve
Putting “try something new” in my diary once a week broke up the work-commute-collapse cycle I had accidentally built my life around. Now I simply count to
five, approach the friendliest-looking person with a “hello”, and any initial awkwardness quickly fades. Next week Who knows. Maybe magic lessons. Maybe life drawing. 故选 A。
8 .B 9 .C 10 .D 11 .C
To save them, the American Bird Conservancy has launched an
innovative conservation project. As a drone pilot and project member, Adam Knox goes into the
forest with a key mission: to release more mosquitoes as part of a scientific intervention.
Instead of chemicals, “this technique uses mosquitoes to fight mosquitoes,” says scientist Christa Seidl, of Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project. When the
mosquito project began, in 2023, helicopters were the best available means. “It’s been a long road to get here, with a lot of trial and testing,” Knox says. “But at this point, we have a system that can fly in these difficult environments.” Plus, drones are quieter, cost less, and allow more flexibility with timing.(“这种技术并非使用化学药剂,而是以蚊治蚊。”
根据第四段中“The mosquitoes Knox drops into the forest are males, so they don’t bite or transmit disease. They’ve been raised in a lab and bred to carry a natural bacteria that prevents them from reproducing with wild females. When these mosquitoes mate with wild ones,
the eggs that are produced won’t hatch.(诺克斯投放到森林里的蚊子是雄性的,所以它们不会 叮咬或传播疾病。 结合画线短语所在句“It also gives honeycreepers time to bounce back.
To save them, the American Bird Conservancy has launched an innovative conservation project. As a drone pilot and project member, Adam Knox
goes into the forest with a key mission: to release more mosquitoes as part of a scientific
intervention.

milliliters of water, or the size of a standard bottle of water. This shocking water consumption
shows how necessary it is for the technology industry to put more money in and develop
energy-saving AI to cut down on such waste to ensure the digital inventions don’t come at the
(
,

Good morning! I feel honored to deliver a speech today. Does listening to music disturb our study Absolutely not! Actually, it can serve as a fantastic study companion.
When I’m wrestling with tough problems, soft background music tends to ease my tension, blocking out random distractions. Whenever I get lost in their catchy tunes and vibrant lyrics, it’s like opening a door to a linguistic and cultural wonderland. This not only improves my language skills but also gives me a deeper understanding of Western culture.
Personally, music doesn’t merely make studying less of a chore; it transforms studying into a more enjoyable and fruitful experience. Let’s embrace music and make learning a truly
delightful journey. Thank you for listening!
47 . As soon as the dawn broke, Lucy continued to search the dark forest. She called out Patrick’s name loudly, her voice trembling with worry and love. She stepped carefully over branches and rocks, following the small path she had discovered the night before. Tired and hungry as she was, she never stopped moving. The hope of finding her son kept her going.
Suddenly, a thin wisp of smoke rising in the distance caught her attention. Her eyes lit up immediately, and she rushed towards it as fast as she could.
The smoke was coming from an old cabin by a still lake. She pushed the door open gently and found Patrick sitting quietly by a small fire, safe and unhurt. He had found the cabin and stayed there to keep warm. The moment Patrick saw Lucy, he jumped up and ran into her arms, crying happily. Lucy held him tightly, tears of relief running down her face. She gave him food and water, and then they walked back to the campsite together. Everyone was overjoyed to see Patrick return safely.
