Debra Des Vignes spent more than a decade as an on-air news reporter in small markets across the US. For most of that time, she covered crime. It wasn't until later that she realized she didn't know the full story of the people she was covering.
Des Vignes had always wanted to volunteer at a prison to better understand the people
behind the stories she covered. The opportunity came in 2017 when she met a co-worker whose husband worked for the local prison. Des Vignes volunteered to teach a class about victims'
experiences, which was intended to help criminals see the consequences of their crimes from the victim's perspective.
“I think society has that image ofTV and movies and what that represents, and how a
criminal is supposed to act or behave with anger,” Des Vignes said.“I found the exact opposite.”
During the course, Des Vignes decided to depart from the curriculum and have the
prisoners write a letter to their victim. Des Vignes said she witnessed these men open up in ways they hadn't before and write some very impactful letters.
That class inspired Des Vignes to start her own nonprofit to focus on writing with prisoners. In 2018, the Prison Writers Workshop was born and has since expanded to eight correctional
institutions.
The curriculum, developed by Des Vignes and her all-volunteer team, provides
imprisoned students with a foundation in creative writing through weekly prompts and introduces fiction,non-fiction, poetry, and play writing. For Des Vignes, the goal is to create a safe space
where they can write and openly share.
“Some may want to make sense of their past; some may want to spend an hour and a half in
a positive environment,” Des Vignes said.“And some may just want to be heard and felt seen and welcomed.”

Old fishing nets maylook useless, but they add up. The Food and Agriculture Organization estimates fishers throw away around 640,000 tons of nets every year. The waste also rots
extremely slowly, presenting major environmental problems across not only crowded areas of the world, but in oceans and beaches. Multiple organizations have launched projects aimed at the
issue, but they face a difficult task, especially when it comes to the larger nets.
In recent years, engineers have started adding fiber from old fishing nets to building
materials. This process helps strengthen the recycled materials for reuse in construction.Aware of the unused value, researchers decided to work together on a new way to develop more usage from the waste nets.
Once they removed any remaining waste material, they broke down the remaining
nets,typically made with plastic fibers, and mixed them into a connecting material. Next, they pressed, heated, and cut their new material into small blocks. Block 1contained only fishing net fibers, while Block 2 featured the net material and an additional strengthening part.
During the production process, the connecting material inside each block begins to melt after coming into contact with hot concrete. Once melted, the recycled fishing net fibers are set free into the material and strengthen it by improving both its flexibility and ability to resist
breaking.
Researchers then tested three concrete mixtures containing 40 percent recycled building materials and various block ratios(比率) against a control concrete made without recycled
materials. The team found that every fishing net-added concrete was stronger than traditional concrete. On top of this, the combination of connecting materials made it easier to change the concrete's thickness, which could reduce the necessary production temperature—— further reducing its energy requirements and pollution output.
The team added that future research could focus on better improving how the fiber blocks are made, or increasing strengthening part amounts to increase the concrete's strength. They also believe that combining additional recycled materials with the nets may further improve the
material while also making the industry even more sustainable.

For millions of years, megalodon sharks were top ocean hunters and then came the great whites. New studies of teeth show that competition for food from great white sharks may have helped push the giants toward dying out.
Scientists studied shark eating habits by looking at zinc (锌) in the teeth of 20 living shark species and 13 extinct species, including megalodons. Megalodons and great white sharks lived in similar environments, eating sea animals such as whales and seals, the researchers reported on May 31 in Nature Communications.
Megalodons were one of the largest hunters ever to live, growing to at least 14 meters
long. This giant began threatening the oceans around 23 million years ago. When and why it died out isn't clear. The species may have remained until about 2.6 million years ago. Or it might have disappeared as early as 3.5 million years ago, right around the time when the great white shark
appeared.
To find out if the two sharks ate similar food, the researchers turned to zinc, which has two main forms: zinc-66 and zinc-64. The amounts of zinc, kept in tooth surface, can show an animal's position in the food chain. Plants and plant eaters are relatively high in zinc-66.Higher up in the
food chain, that 66-to-64 ratio decreases. This means the relationship between the two forms of zinc changes as you move up the food chain.
The studies found that when and where megalodons and white sharks existed together,the sharks had similar ratios. That finding suggests that their diets were similar too,according to scientist Jeremy McCormack of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in
Leipzig, Germany, and colleagues.
Still, that the sharks ate similar food isn't the only proof they were in competition, the
researchers say. And there are many factors that may have helped drive megalodons to die out.
Those factors include ocean changes, falling food populations and competition for food with other
ocean creatures.
