Four Olympic Stadiums with Unexpected Afterlives
Signing on to host the Olympics is a big investment. Most buildings built for the Games are left empty afterward. Here are four locations that have repurposed their
Olympics structures for creative uses.
Lake Placid, New York
Most people entering the now remodeled 1980 Olympic Village in Lake Placid are in a lot of trouble. It no longer welcomes athletes but instead houses prisoners.
This Olympic Village was built with a prison in mind, as planning a secondary purpose was the only way to get funding from the government.
Los Angeles, California
When the 1932 Olympics were held in Los Angeles, the Grand Olympic
Auditorium hosted weightlifting, boxing and wrestling matches. Later it also hosted concerts. The venue was so well known around Hollywood that a documentary was made about it called “18th & Grand.” Today, it is home to a Korean church.
Beijing, China
Half of the National Aquatics Center, built for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, is now Asia’s largest waterpark with 13 waterslides, a lazy river, a wave pool and a spa. The second floor has a hall with 17,000 seats. There’s also a theater, several
restaurants and bars and a museum of Olympic history.
Helsinki, Finland
Originally constructed in 1937, the Tennispalatsi was never used for Olympic
tennis, but it did host basketball when the Games finally came to Helsinki in 1952. In 1957, the city bought the building. Now, the Tennispalatsi has the Helsinki City Art Museum, a movie theater and several restaurants.

After having her second child, 35-year-old Eman Wagdy Selim felt that she had a bigger purpose in life. Although her background was in language and translation,
the young Egyptian woman, with her husband’s support, had an idea to create a
platform called AI Faraza to provide high-quality fruits and vegetables at competitive prices. After listing 150 products, the platform began offering meat and cheese as well through start-up companies.
In 2019, Eman developed the project further into an app that allowed Egyptian women and other small-business owners who sold homemade meals, as well as local farmers, to bring their products to a wider audience.
Today, AI Faraza, an Egyptian word that refers to careful and attentive
selection, supports Egyptian women in particular, providing them with job
opportunities and income to secure decent lives for themselves and their families.
They also have access to training opportunities to learn how to best prepare, market and sell homemade food to customers in Egypt through the app.
Eman’s idea only became a reality after she heard about the One Million Arab
Coders Initiative, which provides online training courses to help Arab youth build and master coding skills so they can pursue jobs in digital technologies and develop their own high-tech projects.
She enrolled in the Initiative’s Data Analysis track, where she learned how to
transform data into successful ideas. Gaining these skills was a vital step towards the success ofAI Faraza, and Eman is proud of the personal growth and achievements she has experienced thanks to the Initiative.
Overjoyed at the success of her project, Eman says, “AI Faraza has helped
change the lives of 800 Egyptian women, and we will continue to grow and develop our project. We promise that we will expand the app’s reach to be accessible to all Egyptian women, wherever they are, so that we can grow together as one team.”
4 .What is the initial purpose of ‘AI Faraza’
A .To fulfil her life purpose.
B .To offer cost-effective goods.
C .To improve Egyptian women’s status.
D .To help the locals promote their products.

A .By funding locals to expand businesses.
B .By providing a platform to increase income.
C .By donating daily necessities to secure decent lives.
D .By spreading professional knowledge to support them.

A .Her optimism for the project.
B .The training courses to land jobs.
C .The skills acquired in the Initiative.
D .Her background in language and translation.

Nature words like river, moss and blossom have appeared less frequently in
books over the past years. This decline, according to a study by professor Miles
Richardson from the University of Derby, mirrors a broader change he has traced
through 220 years of records on urbanisation, the loss of wildlife in neighbourhoods, and parents no longer passing on engagement with nature to their children.
The computer modelling in the study also predicts an “extinction of
experience”, with future generations continuing to lose an awareness of nature
because it is not present in increasingly built-up neighbourhoods, while parents no longer pass on an “orientation(倾向)” towards the natural world. This is consistent with findings from other studies, which identify adult nature connectedness as the strongest predictor of whether a child will become close to nature.
Richardson said that when he tested policy and urban environmental changes in the model he was surprised at the scale of the changes required to restore the
connection to nature. Increasing biodiverse green spaces in a city by 30% might look like significant positive progress for wildlife and people but Richardson said his study suggests a city might need to be 10 times greener to turn around declines in nature
connection.
Efforts to simply encourage adults to engage with nature are often insufficient for lasting change. More effective are measures that build nature connection from an early age, such as forest schools for young children. Research indicates that
government initiatives reshaping early education and urban design must be
consistently applied over the next 25 years. Once established, this connection can become self-sustaining.
Richardson said the scale of societal change required might not be as
challenging as it appeared. A study on people in Sheffield found that they spent just 4 minutes and 36 seconds on average in natural spaces each day. “Increase that by ten, and people are spending 40 minutes outside every day — that may be enough,” he
said. “The key is to make these gains last across generations,” he added.
8 .What change has Richardson traced in his study
A.Nature words have disappeared from books. B.People have less direct contact with nature.
C .Urbanisation has damaged wildlife habitats.D .Parents spend more time outdoors with kids.
9 .What might cause future generations to have “extinction of experience” in the model
A .They are raised away from nature. B .They can’t adapt to changes in nature.
C .High-rise buildings fill neighbourhoods. D .Schools offer few nature science lessons.
10 .What is a most effective solution to the issue according to the text
A .Advancing long-term policies. B .Launching eco-friendly campaigns.
C .Focusing on raising adults’ awareness. D .Enlarging green space in certain areas.
11 .Richardson mentioned the study on people in Sheffield to show .
A.nature contact varies from city to city B.people’s living habits are hard to change C .a new way to measure nature time is needed D .small efforts help improve
contact with nature

Have you ever obeyed the suggestions of a digital writing assistant to replace a word or restructure a sentence Before the appearance of digital tools, you’d probably have turned to a dictionary for the same assistance.
Dictionaries enable us to write not with fail-safe convenience but with
originality and a point of view. While AI assistants produce phrases and statements so writers don’t have to think them up, dictionaries provide us with the knowledge to use language ourselves in expressive and potentially infinite (无穷的) ways. They place choice and authority literally in human hands, forcing us to discover how we want to explain ourselves and our ideas to the world.
The abundance of digital writing assistants gives greater urgency to debates
about what a dictionary should be. In 1946, George Orwell described good writing as
“picking out words for the sake of their meaning,” a practice that dictionaries
facilitate while digital writing programs stifle. Writers consulting a dictionary make a choice, while writers guided by an app have their choices made for them. The
digital-native approach delivers hands-off, derivative (衍生的) communication. The other requires leafing through pages without knowing exactly where you’ll end up. Without dictionaries to provide us with a guide to English’s potential, writing that
way is nearly impossible.
Our ability to express ourselves is critical — it helps us define who we are.
Dictionaries aid us in achieving this: They categorize our unique ways of thinking
through language. I’m a Canadian; my feeling of pride in my native land is enhanced by small verbal Canadianisms like “eaves trough” or “serviette”, which are
well-documented in dictionaries but rarely used by AI chatbots, for the most part.
As digital writing extends deeper into our lives and minds, we need dictionaries more than ever. Abandoning dictionaries and embracing mechanized writing would weaken our capacity for collective identity quite as much as the ability to express
ourselves.
12 .What might be a distinct feature of dictionaries according to the author
A .They promise fail-safe phrases.
B .They possess academic authority.
C .They facilitate creative writing.
D .They provide ready-made expressions.
13 .What does the underlined word “stifle” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A .Favor. B .Revise.
C .Observe. D .Discourage.
14 .Why does the author mention “eaves trough” and “serviette” in paragraph 4
A .To show how AI aids us in expressing.
B .To indicate the weakness of dictionaries.
C .To celebrate the diversity of Canadian English.
D .To illustrate how language use affects identity.
15 .What can be a suitable title for the text
A .Why Keep Your Dictionary
B .How to Deal with Digital Writing
C .Who Uses Writing Assistants
D .What to Expect from Dictionaries

“Bang. . !” Sara pushed the door open. She threw her school bag onto the floor and called out, “I’m home!” No answer. The house was silent. It sounded empty, but she knew it wasn’t. Her mum and dad were working upstairs.
Sara got a glass of orange juice, went into the conservatory (玻璃房) and sat down in her favourite chair. The garden was still in the dark afternoon. On one side, her mum’s garden was neat and tidy with boring short grass, boring straight
flowerbeds and boring straight paths. But on the other side, Sara’s Nature Garden looked wild and exciting with big dead sunflowers and tall grasses.
“Nobody is interested in me. Mum and dad only think about their work,” she thought sadly.
Then she recalled: One month earlier, she learned in a magazine that many dogs were abandoned because their owners got bored with them; One hour earlier, she saw a cute dog wagging its tail and licking her friend’s face.
Sara knew today was special. Today things were changing. She couldn’t wait any longer. It’s time to talk to her parents.
So Sara got up from her chair and climbed all the way to the loft (阁楼). “Mum, I want a talk.” said Sara. “Just a minute!” Her mum clicked on the keyboard, took off her glasses and turned to her daughter. Sara coughed, took a deep breath, and told her mum that she wanted a dog. “No, Sara. That’s impossible,” her mum said firmly. Sara went to her father but got the same answer. She rushed into her room angrily and
slammed the door shut.
Later, Sara’s mum knocked at the door and went in. “Darling, we know this is important to you. You can have a dog if you take the responsibility. But look at your Nature Garden, your school bag, your bedroom! What a mess! Do you think you can take good care of a dog ” said her mum.

Richardson from the University of Derby, mirrors a broader change he has traced through 220
years of records on urbanisation, the loss of wildlife in neighbourhoods, and parents no longer
passing on engagement with nature to their children.(据德比大学的 Miles Richardson 教授的一
The computer modelling in the study also predicts an
‘extinction of experience’, with future generations continuing to lose an awareness of nature
because it is not present in increasingly built-up neighbourhoods, while parents no longer pass on an ‘orientation’ towards the natural world.(该研究中的计算机模型还预测会出现“体验灭绝”现象,未来的世代将会逐渐失去对自然界的认知,因为自然环境已不再存在于日益密集的居民区之中,而父母们也不再向孩子们传递对自然世界的“认知导向” 。)” 故选 A 项。
More effective are measures that build nature connection from an early age, such as forest schools for young children. Research indicates that government
initiatives reshaping early education and urban design must be consistently applied over the next
25 years. Once established, this connection can become self-sustaining.(更为有效的是那些能在孩子幼年时期就建立与自然联系的措施,比如为幼儿设立的森林学校。 故选 A项。
根据文章末尾段内容“A study on people in Sheffield found that they spent just 4 minutes and 36 seconds on average in natural spaces each day. ‘Increase that by ten, and people are spending 40 minutes outside every day — that may be enough,’ he said.(一项针对谢菲尔德市民的研究发现,他们平均每天在自然环境中停留的时间仅为 4 分 36 秒。

根据划线词前“a practice that dictionaries facilitate(字典促进这种做法)”和“while”表示的对比关系可知,stifle 和 facilitate 含义相反,即“抑制、阻碍” ,选项中
第四段开头“Our ability to express ourselves is critical — it helps us define who we are. Dictionaries aid us in achieving this: They categorize our unique ways of thinking through language.(我们表达自我的能力至关重要——它帮助我们定义自己是谁。词典有助于我们实现这一目标:它们通过语言将我们独特的思维方式进行分类)”点明观点:表达自我的能力帮助我们定义自身身份,字典能帮我们保留独有的语言表达。下文“I’m a Canadian; my feeling of pride in my native land is enhanced by small verbal Canadianisms like “eaves trough” or
“serviette”, which are well-documented in dictionaries but rarely used by AI chatbots, for the most part.(我是加拿大人;我对祖国的自豪感因一些小小的加拿大式词汇而得到增强,比如“檐沟”或“餐巾纸”,这些词汇在词典中有详细记载,但在大多数情况下,人工智能聊天机器人很少使用它们)”作者举这两个加拿大特有的词汇,是为了说明:这类特有语言能增强本土身份认同感,即语言使用会影响个人/群体身份。故选 D。
As digital writing extends deeper into our lives and minds, we need dictionaries more than ever. Abandoning dictionaries and embracing
mechanized writing would weaken our capacity for collective identity quite as much as the ability to express ourselves.(随着数字写作深入我们的生活和思维,我们对词典的需求比以往任何时候都更加迫切。
故选 A。
