I live in Xizhou in Yunnan Province, on the historic Tea Horse Road. I have to admit that when I first heard that Paul Salopek was going to walk the entire globe on his own two feet, I was blown away. I couldn’t imagine that there could be such an unusual person in the world.
Last May, I met Paul. He told me that it was his first time in China. He talked to me with
great excitement about the history, migrations, and discoveries in my region of China. He spoke of the Shu Yandu Dao (the Southern Silk Road), the travels ofthe 17th-century Chinese explorer Xu Xiake, the Tea Horse Road and the early 20th-century American botanist Joseph Rock. He also
talked of Xuanzang. Paul considered many of them heroes and in a sense Chinese pioneers of slow journalism.
I decided to accompany Paul on his walk toward Yunnan. On September 28, 2021, we set out. Our days were simple: walk, eat, sleep, and repeat. We woke up at sunrise, set off in high
spirits, and rested at sunset, dragging ourselves into exhausted sleep.
We met many people on the road. Some were curious, surrounding us and watching us;
some gave us directions; some invited us into their home to take a rest; some spoke of the charm of their hometown. We met many beautiful souls, simple souls and warm souls. We were walking with our minds.
Together, we were impressed by the biodiversity of the Gaoligong Mountains. As I walked on ancient paths through mountains, I seemed to hear the antique voices of past travelers urging me to be careful on the road.
Looking back on the more than 200 miles I walked with Paul, I came to a realization.
Walking for its own sake, while healthy and admirable, is only a small part of the benefit of moving with our feet. A deeper reward is rediscovering the world around us, shortening the distance between each other, and sharing each other’s cultures.
4 .How did the writer first respond to Paul’s travel plan

A .They honored the ancestors. B .They set off in high spirits.
C .They satisfied the locals’ curiosity. D .They built bonds with people.
7 .What is the main purpose of the writer’s writing the text
A .To share and reflect on a journey.
B .To suggest a new way of travel.
C .To advocate protection of biodiversity.
D .To introduce and promote Chinese culture.

Scientists in Japan have discovered that a substance found in ginger (姜) impacts the spread of cancer cells. Researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University (OMU) have worked out how one of the main components of ginger inhibits cancer cells from working.
Cancer cells create their energy source in a different way from ordinary human cells — a process that does not need oxygen known as the Warburg effect. Associate Professor Akiko
Kojima-Yuasa at OMU analysed EMC, a main component of kencur ginger, to see how it slows cancer.
Earlier research led by Professor Kojima-Yuasa discovered it slows cancer down, but it was not understood why. This time, it was found that the ginger substance prevented cancer cells
producing the fatty acids which are necessary for energy. Further, the researchers discovered that the application of the EMC stimulated increased glycolysis (糖酵解), which they supposed was a survival mechanism in the cells.
Professor Kojima-Yuasa said: “These findings not only provide new insights that
supplement (补充) and expand the theory of the Warburg effect, which can be considered the starting point of cancer metabolism (新陈代谢) research, but are also expected to lead to the discovery of new treating targets and the development of new treatment methods.”
Ginger has previously been linked to fighting cancer. In 2015 the University of Texas found ginger could be used to help prevent and treat gastrointestinal (胃肠的) cancers. The researchers said: “Ginger is one of the most widely used natural products consumed as a seasoning and
medicine for treating heartburn, loss of appetite, infections, cough, and bronchitis.” In 2019, the University of Mauritius investigated the use of ginger to treat cancer in Africa and Asia. The
researchers said: “Ginger together with its associated bioactive substances has been proven to have potential anticancer properties.”
8 .What does the underlined word “inhibits” in paragraph 1 mean
A .Protects. B .Detects. C .Delays. D .Blocks.
9 .What is one ofOMU’s latest research findings
A .EMC stopping fatty acids boosts glycolysis.
B .Ginger changes the metabolism of normal cells.
C .EMC increases substances used to produce energy.
D .Cancer cells produce energy differently from ordinary cells.
10 .Why does the author quote Professor Kojima-Yuasa’s comment
A .To show the necessity of adjusting treating targets.
B .To emphasize the potential significance of the findings.
C .To present different theories about cancer metabolism.
D .To stress the great urgency of valuing the Warburg effect.
11 .How does the author present the issue in the last paragraph
A .By stating arguments. B .By making comparisons.
C .By giving examples. D .By providing statistics.
D
Educators and business leaders have more in common than it may seem. Teachers want to prepare students for a successful future. Technology companies have an interest in developing a
workforce with the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills needed to grow the company and advance the industry. How can they work together to achieve these goals Play may be the answer.
Focusing on STEM skills is important, but the reality is that STEM skills are enhanced and more relevant when combined with traditional, hands-on creative activities. This combination is proving to be the best way to prepare today’s children to be the makers and builders of tomorrow. That is why technology companies are partnering with educators to bring back good,
old-fashioned play.
In fact, many experts argue that the most important 21st-century skills aren’t related to
specific technologies or subject matter, but to creative skills like imagination, problem-finding and problem--solving, teamwork, optimism, patience and the ability to experiment and take risks.
These are skills acquired when kids tinker (小修理). High-tech industries such as NASA’s Jet
Propulsion Laboratory have found that their best overall problem solvers were master tinkerers in their youth.
There are cognitive benefits of doing things the way we did as children — building
something, tearing it down, then building it up again. Research shows that given 15 minutes of
free play, four- and five-year-olds will spend a third of this time engaged in spatial, mathematical, and architectural activities. This type of play, especially with building blocks, helps children
discover and develop key principles in math and geometry.
If play and building are critical to 21st-century skill development, that’s really good news
for two reasons: Children are born builders, makers, and creators, so fostering 21st-century skills may be as simple as giving kids room to play, tinker, and try things out, even as they grow older. Secondly, it doesn’t take 21st-century technology to foster 21st-century skills. This is especially
important for under-resourced schools and communities. Taking whatever materials are handy and tinkering with them is a simple way to engage those important “maker” skills. And anyone,
anywhere, can do it.
12 .Why do technology companies support traditional play in education
A .To follow NASA’s example in training. B .To prepare future tech workforce.
C .To better develop STEM skills. D .To combine STEM with hands-on activities.
13 .What are the benefits of children tinkering with things
A .Using modern technology. B .Mastering math and geometry.
C .Gaining all-round STEM expertise. D .Developing creativity and related skills.
14 .What does the last paragraph suggest to educators
A .Children’s age plays a role in skill formation.
B .Resources are important for children’s development.
C .Children should be given space to experiment freely.
D .Children’s natural talents make skill development easy.
15 .Which is the most suitable title for the text
A .Play: A Key to Developing Future Skills
B .Tech Companies: Investing in Future Talent
C .Tinkering: A Path to Becoming Problem Solvers
D .STEM Education: The Key to Children’s Future Success
For ages, it’s been known that explaining a concept deepens your own understanding. The Roman thinker Seneca noted, “While we teach, we learn.” 16 it shows why teaching is a powerful way to learn and it has led to new methods that allow students to become instructors.
Studies show that students who tutor others work harder, remember better, and use
knowledge more effectively than those studying only for themselves. This “learning by teaching” effect is so strong that it even helps explain why older siblings often score higher on IQ tests — they spend time teaching their younger brothers and sisters. 17 They have college
students teach high school students, who then teach middle school students the same subjects.
The most advanced tool is the “teachable agent”. 18 It learns, makes mistakes, and asks questions. For example, a character named Betty’s Brain has been taught science by many middle school students. The students must organize their knowledge clearly and correct misunderstandings in order to teach Betty successfully. 19
20 Its questions make tutors think differently, and watching it solve problems lets students see their knowledge in action. Most importantly, the emotions involved — frustration
when the agent fails, and pride when it succeeds — deepen the learning experience and strengthen memory.
A .Researchers support this idea.
B .Educators are now using this idea in schools.
C .This process deepens their own understanding.
D .Some students find it difficult to explain concepts.
E .Modern science now confirms this ancient wisdom.
F .It is a computer program that acts like a real student.
G .The teachable agent also provides helpful feedback.

My cello (大提琴) teacher, Ms. Kim, wanted me to audition (试演) for an orchestra (管弦乐队) known as the Young String Ensemble (YSE). But in my mind, I knew that I had no clue
what an audition was like.
Before I knew it, I was preparing for my audition at the YSE. Ms. Kim selected a solo piece for me to play for the judges. She also taught me scales (notes played up continuously to a point) and gave me some tips on sight-reading (playing music you see for the first time). During my
audition, I would play two scales first and my solo piece afterwards. Then, the judges would give me a sheet of music to sight-read.
Summer passed by so quickly as I practiced and practiced cello, my fingers often aching from the repeated movements. Each day I pushed myself a little further, determined to improve and ready for the audition on August 29th. Finally, the day of my audition came. At four thirty PM, I arrived at the office building to try out for the YSE.
My mom and I arrived one hour early to warm up for my audition. Slowly, one hour passed as I reviewed my scales and my solo piece. When it was about time, a lady appeared, bringing me into a room with three judges sitting calmly.
My heart started to pound as I sat down on a chair, preparing for my performance. What if I did something wrong or made a silly mistake Reassuring myself, I took one last deep breath and started to play.
When I finished performing my solo piece, I heard the judges discussing it for a moment. A few seconds later, a man stood up, placing a paper on the music stand. It must be time for the

out, even as they grow older.(如果玩耍和构建对于 21 世纪技能的培养至关重要,那么这确实是个好消息,原因有二:孩子天生就是建造者、创造者和制造者,所以培养 21 世纪所需的技能或许只需为孩子们提供玩耍、动手操作和尝试新事物的空间,即便他们长大成人也是如此)”可知,教育者建议孩子们应当被给予自由实验的空间。故选 C。
Educators and business leaders have more in common than it may seem. Teachers want to prepare students for a successful future. Technology companies have an
interest in developing a workforce with the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math)
skills needed to grow the company and advance the industry. How can they work together to
achieve these goals Play may be the answer.(教育工作者和企业领导者之间存在着比表面看起来更为紧密的共同点。 故选 A。

固定搭配 make efforts to do sth.
故填 to promote。
句中已有谓语动词“is drawing”,所以此处为非谓语,“The Shaanxi Archaeology Museum”与“show”之间存在主动关系,应使 用现在分词作状语,故填 showing。
故填 with。

“unearthed” ,所以此处作定语,“the remains of the Yuezhi Culture and the Kangju Kingdom”与“record”之间存在被动关系,应使用过去分词 recorded 作后置定语,故填 recorded。
46 .Dear Rory,
I’m so glad to hear from you. And I can understand your hesitation about rejoining the team because you haven’t practised swimming for a long time. However, if you restart your practice
again, I believe you will catch up.
The experience and skills you’ve gained on the team are surely the treasures you shouldn’t give up easily. Don’t let fear hold you back. Before applying to rejoin the team, I suggest you
focus on building up your swimming skills and practise regularly. Then talk to the coach and
express your desire to return. It would be better if they were willing to give you some advice to help you make progress.
I have no doubt that your positive attitude will shine through!
Yours,
Li Hua
47 .范文
Looking at the piece of paper, I made sure I knew how to play the music. However, I had
butterflies in my stomach as I stared at the first note. Building up my confidence, I started to play the sight-reading piece. Surprisingly, I only had to play two lines of sight-reading. The judges were smiling and set me free. Finally, my audition was over. Walking out of the building, I headed happily towards my mom. She stretched out her arms to hug me and said, “You did a good job just by stepping in there.” I smiled and hugged her back.
One week after my audition, an email popped up on my mom’s iPad. It was labeled: YSE
Audition Results. When Mom read the words, her eyes lit up instantly and she handed the screen
to me with trembling hands. My fingers shook as I scrolled down, and when I saw the final line
confirming my acceptance, I let out a cheer that echoed through the room. I got in! Screaming, my mom jumped up and down happily. The judges were content with my playing! My hard work,
those endless summer afternoons of practicing until my fingers ached, really paid off.
