第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分 50 分)
第一节(共 15 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 37.5 分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A 、B 、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Most passwords are still weak. A study by Specops found that 98.5% of real-world
passwords are objectively weak. Only 1.5% of passwords made it into the “strong” zone, defined as being at least 15 characters long and using two or more character types. Only 3.3% of
passwords were longer than 15 characters. This means that most passwords can be cracked quickly using inexpensive powerful computer tools.
The most common passwords were eight characters long with just two character types, such as “Summer22” or “Office99”. About 8% of all passwords fell into this dangerously basic zone.
Close behind were eight-character passwords with only one character type, most often letters alone, and in many cases lowercase letters only. These accounted for another 7.6% of all
passwords.
When password length is held constant, security depends largely on the variety of characters used. The table below illustrates this effect.
Character set Size of set Total combinations How long to crack
15 characters password of lowercase only (a-z) 26 2615~1. 68×1021 Easily cracked with powerful tools in days or weeks
15 characters password of lowercase + uppercase (a-z, A-Z) 52 5215~2. 53×1025 Much harder to crack, but still possible over time
15 characters password of alphanumeric (a-z, A-Z, 0-9) 62 6215~7. 70×1026 Very strong passwords for most practical use cases
15 characters password of all printable 94 9415~2. 25×1029 Nearly impossible to crack
characters (a-z, A-Z, 0-9, symbols)
In addition to character variety, password length also plays an important role in security.
Using passwords of 16 to 20 characters with at least two different character types-letters, numbers, or symbols-pushes the number of possible combinations into the trillions. Even high- end cracking farms would take years or centuries to break them. In reality, however, weak passwords are still
very common. As Darren James, Senior Product Manager at Specops, notes, “Many users are still low-hanging fruit for online thieves, who can crack their passwords in seconds.”
1 .What percentage of passwords are the most common type
A .1.5%. B .3.3%. C .7.6%. D .8%.
2 .What is the main factor the table compares
A .The size of set. B .Use of letters.
C .The cracking method. D .Password length.
3 .Why does the author quote Darren James
A .To introduce his company. B .To warn the online thieves.
C .To stress the worrying reality. D .To criticize users for poor choices.

In a quiet corner of Lahore, Pakistan, stands a small barber shop called Hope & Scissors.
It’s a modest place run by Adil Raza, a 42-year-old barber with a warm smile and a heart for his
community. Adil offers free haircuts to children from low-income families-with one unique
condition: they must read aloud to him. As a father, Adil knows how important reading is for
young minds. “I have three children myself,” he says. “I just want kids to experience the power of reading.”
The idea began in 2021 at a local “Back to School” event organized by education
volunteers. Adil had been invited to offer free grooming services, but he wanted to add something more. He set up a chair outside and began giving free haircuts to kids who read from storybooks. The idea caught on quickly. Encouraged by the response, Adil turned it into a monthly event at his shop. Soon, word spread across the city. Community members donated books, and a mobile
library joined the effort. Local educator Imran Hussain, touched by the project, sent a box of children’s books from his school library.
Hussain, a teacher for over 20 years, praised the idea. “Reading often stops in the summer
months. What Adil is doing keeps the habit alive. I haven’t seen anything quite like it.” One single
mother of four said the free haircuts saved her money and got her children excited about reading.
Ten-year-old Zain, holding his favorite book, said, “Reading feels like traveling with your mind.”
Adil hopes his “Reading Barber” concept will expand to other cities in Pakistan. He
imagines barbers proudly displaying signs that say: We support reading here. Despite rising media
attention, he remains modest. “When a community comes together, small ideas can grow,” he
says.
Adil encourages others, “You don’t need a degree to help children read. Just a chair, a book, and a little time.”

Earth’s biggest problem, according to Douglas Adams, is quite simple: the species of clever ape (猿) that thinks it runs the joint is mostly unhappy most of the puter scientist Cal
Newport now adds email to the list of life’s troubles. In his book A World Without Email, he argues this once-brilliant invention has made us suffer.
Newport says we’ve become slaves to email trapped in a “hyperactive hive mind” — the reality in which everyone, everywhere, can communicate with everyone else with ease. Studies have shown how dominant email has become in ordinary office life. The average knowledge
worker sends and receives 126 emails daily, which ruins focus, making them less productive and more irritable (易怒的).
All of this might be bearable but for one problem: the mismatch between modern electronic messaging and our own information-processing capacity. Multitasking is a myth. We can’t think clearly while dealing with an overflowing inbox. We’re wired to prefer real-time conversations,
where everyone gets updates together. Back in small tribes (部落), we needed daily chats to feel connected. Now, in a digital world, that ancient urge makes us anxious if we don’t reply to every email instantly.
Despite his book’s title, Newport isn’t against all electronic messaging. What drives him to desperation is how we use it. With office workers nodding in hearty agreement, Newport offers
some solutions. A German company invented the No Email Day. Productivity went up, even
though it shortened the work time. The goal was for everyone to approach their work more
deliberately without rushing. Some companies use an application called Trello to allow workers to access the necessary data and decide when to jump in and get things done.
Handling email when it’s out of control is like being pecked (啄) by a flock of geese. But
changing this won’t be easy. Our need for focused thinking conflicts with the Dopamine Economy — something designed to keep us unable to resist constant messages. Still, Newport thinks
regaining control of our time might be the key to being happier at work.
8 .What phenomenon does Newport point out in his book
A .Office workers fail to handle daily emails.
B .People can contact each other more easily.
C .Convenience of modern life comes at a cost.
D .Email overload affects efficiency and mood.
9 .How does the author develop paragraph 3
A .By giving examples.
B .By presenting the history.
C .By analyzing the cause.
D .By comparing preferences.
10 .What does Newport try to illustrate by mentioning the practices of some companies
A .The importance of autonomy at work. B .The necessity to cut working hours.
C .The benefit of technological advances. D .The need to follow economic trend.
11 .What might be a suitable title for the text
A .Message Overflow B .Email Slavery
C .Message Addiction D .Email Craze

Nigel Richards, a well-known Scrabble champion from New Zealand now living in
Malaysia, made headlines on November 16 by winning the Spanish-language World Scrabble Championship in Granada, Spain.
Remarkably, Richards can’t speak Spanish, yet his extraordinary talent for the game shone through. He only started playing Scrabble at 28 and had to memorize the entire Spanish Scrabble dictionary and adapt to a different scoring system where letter values differ from the English
version.
In Scrabble, players use seven letter tiles (牌) to create high-scoring words. Each letter has a specific point value, with unusual letters like Q, X, and Z worth more. Special board squares can double or triple (三倍) these scores. Despite these complexities, Richards’ victory was impressive.
Richards’ Scrabble journey is marked by victories across multiple languages. He has won the English-language World Scrabble Championship five times and also triumphed (获胜) in
French (in 2015 and 2018). His ability to excel in languages he doesn’t speak is due to his exceptional memory and mathematical skills, which allow him to form high-scoring words effortlessly.
His strategy focuses on remembering word spellings and point values rather than
understanding their meanings. Friend Liz Fagerlund explains that Richards visualizes word groups
in his mind like a mental photo album, aiding his recall. To prepare for the Spanish championship, he learned hundreds of thousands of words a year in advance. This hard work paid off as he won 23 out of 24 games in Granada, defeating the previous Argentine champion, Benjamin Olaizola.
Despite his numerous awards and public recognition, Nigel Richards remains a shy figure. He doesn’t like to talk about how he plays with reporters; he prefers to let his wins speak for
themselves. His special way of playing Scrabble, using language memorization and smart
strategies, makes him one of the best Scrabble players ever, no matter what language he’s playing in.
12 .What does the author want to show in Paragraph 3
A .The usual letters in the game.
B .The complexity of the game rules.
C .The high-scoring words in Scrabble.
D .The structure of the Scrabble board.
13 .What can be inferred about Richards’ approach to learning words
A .He relies heavily on visual memory and point values.
B .He writes the words needed for upcoming competitions.
C .He focuses on understanding the meanings ofthe words.
D .He prefers discussing his learning strategies with reporters.
14 .Which can be used to describe Nigel Richards
A .Outgoing. B .Reserved. C .Proud. D .Innocent.
15 .What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A .To list champions in Scrabble competitions.
B .To stress Scrabble’s history in competition.
C .To explain how to speak multiple languages.
D .To introduce Nigel Richards’ wins and strategy.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Severe floods are becoming more and more common around the world. 16 , but
could the way that cities are growing be making things worse Could we design cities in a different way to reduce the risk of flooding
As cities expand and more and more land is underneath concrete, less water is absorbed and more needs to be channelled away by storm drains and sewage (污水) systems. As they become
overwhelmed by the volume of water, the risk of flash flooding increases.
17 Chinese landscape architect Yu Kongjian certainly thinks so. In 2013, he
proposed the concept of ‘sponge (海绵) cities’, which are designed to absorb water like a sponge, reducing the risk of sudden floods. Natural solutions are encouraged, using riverside parks and
ponds to absorb floodwater. 18 . Auckland, in New Zealand, was named the spongiest city in one study. It has replaced the concrete culverts (涵洞) around the Oakley creek stream with
green banks and connected parks. This has reduced flooding in the nearby residential areas as well as the number of associated pollutants which used to be washed into the sea.
What Auckland has taken is only a natural approach. 19 , In Amsterdam, the
Netherlands’ capital city, people have fixed blue-green roofs on a number of buildings. These
roofs have a layer of plants on the outside, and then layers underneath which collect and store
rainwater. This water can be used by people in the building below to water plants or clean toilets. Advanced software can even tell the roofs to release water ahead of upcoming storms to maximize the system’s ability to absorb rainwater. 20 .
A .A system like that does actually work
B .The warming climate is leading to heavier rainfall
C .Could it be that we’ve been taking the wrong approach
D .But a much more high-tech method has already been applied
E .Approaches inspired by this have been taken by cities across the world
F .Is the natural approach sufficient when we’re faced with increased rainfall
G .It can even identify the city’s risky areas and tailor the response accordingly

Mrs. Bobbin, the dressmaker, was tired and had a bad headache. but she still managed to sew the last stiches in the gown (礼服裙) she was making.
“It’s the most beautiful dress in the whole world!” said her daughter, Irene. “The duchess(公爵夫人)will love it.”
“It is nice,” her mother admitted. “But, darling, it’s for tonight’s ball(舞会), and I don’t have the strength to deliver it. I feel sick.”
“Poor Mama,” said Irene. “I can get it there!”
“No, honey, I can’t let you,” said Mrs. Bobbin. “Such a huge package, and it’s such a long way to the duchess’s house. Besides. it’s starting to snow.”
But Irene insisted. She coaxed her mother into bed, covered her with two quilts. Then with great care, Irene packed the splendid gown in a big box with plenty of tissue paper. She kissed her mother’s hot forehead and slipped out with the big box, shutting the door firmly behind her.
It really was cold outside, very cold. The wind whirled the falling snow-flakes about. It
blew so rudely that she could hardly move ahead. Cold snow sifted into her boots and chilled her feet. She pushed out her lip and hurried on. This was an important task.
“Take it easy!” she told herself, leaning back hard against the wind.
“Go home!” the wind shouted. “Irene…go hooome …”
“I will do no such thing,” she snapped. “No such thing, you wicked wind! The gown had to get to the duchess!” She went shuffling through the snow.
“Go ho-o-ome,” the wind screamed.
“GO HO-WO-WOME,” it shrieked, “or else ”
The wind decided to put on a show. It wrestled her for the package—walloped it, twisted it, shook it, snatched at it.
But Irene wouldn’t give up. “It’s my mother’s work!” she screamed. She took hold of the box tightly.

47 .范文:
Suddenly Irene stepped in a hole, fell over and her foot got injured. “Keep quiet!” She
blamed it on the wind. “You’ve done enough damage already.” The wind swallowed up her
words. She sat in the snow in great pain, afraid that she wouldn’t be able to go on. For a short
second, Irene wondered if she should follow the wind’s warning. But it was her dear mother’s hard work, all those days of measuring, cutting, pinning, stitching ... And the poor duchess! She must be waiting for the gown anxiously. She managed to get to her feet and start moving again.
Eventually she was at the door of the duchess’s house. She knocked the door and was
welcomed by cheering servants and the anxious duchess. They couldn’t believe she had come in
such a snowstorm, all by herself. They were so deeply moved by her courage that they
immediately served her with a good dinner by the fire. The duchess, meanwhile, got into her gown before the guests arrived. What a wonderful ball it was! The duchess was like a bright star in the
sky. “Mama would enjoy hearing all about it.” A smile of relief appeared on Irene’s face.
