When Jack, my husband, and I drove past a fire station with a sign reading, “Are you ready for the next storm ” Our area had just been in the path of Hurricane Irma, causing downed trees
and outages. We were stuck in the dark and cut off from the outside world.
We have had our share of storms in the past years — a snowstorm and other heavy snows that knocked down trees, sometimes up to a week at a time. Those days in a cold house weren’t fun, but we learned so much from those early storms, things that made later storms easier to bear.
Now we have stored up flashlights, lanterns and candles. We bought a battery-operated
radio to keep up with the news. We stocked up on batteries so that we’d have plenty for extended power failures. We make sure our grill (烤架) is ready and its tank is full, and we purchase food that can be easily prepared and then cooked or heated on the grill. And we don’t forget to buy
emergency chocolate! We have book lights to read in the dark. We keep our car gas tanks full and have emergency cash on hand.
We’re ready for the next storm, but we wouldn’t have learned to do all those things if we
hadn’t encountered a storm in the past. The same is true spiritually. Those little storms in our lives are never fun, but they prepare us for the big storms — the big trials — that will come our way.
They can teach us some valuable lessons.
Are you ready for the next storm Now is the time to get ready, not when the storm arrives.

A .It was instructive. B .It was satisfactory. C .It was unbearable. D .It was destructive. 7 .What can we learn from the author’s story
A .Strike while the iron is hot. B .Take precautions before it is too late.
C .Kill two birds with one stone. D .Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.
“A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says. “Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.
The scale can’t tell you how much of your body weight is muscle or fat, which means if
your goal is to improve your fitness level, the scale is not the best tool for measuring
improvements. When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by
building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase,
while your body fat percentage may decrease. These changes happen over weeks and months (not hours or days) so the scale is useless when tracking them.
You may argue that you weigh a few pounds less after a high intensity (强度) training class. Don’t get too excited—it’s just water loss due to sweat. Water makes up approximately 65 to 90
percent of a person’s weight, and variation in water content of the human body can move the scale by ten pounds or more from day to day.
So ignore the scale and pay more attention to objective measurement tools like body
composition. Keep in mind that if you’re exercising but gaining weight, you may actually look slimmer.
8 .What can we know from Dolgan’s words from paragraph 2
A .Your weight changes little during a day.
B .Your scale mass is affected by many factors.
C .Your workout is not effective if you gain weight.
D .Your weight is determined only by muscle and fat.
9 .What will most probably happen after you exercise and eat healthy for 3 months
A .You will weigh more.
B .Your muscle mass will decrease.
C .Your body fat will increase.
D .Your body composition will change.
10 .How much water may a man weighing 150 pounds have in his body
A .30 pounds. B .60 pounds.
C .100 pounds. D .140 pounds.
11 .Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A .Why Do We Gain Weight
B .How to Work Out Effectively
C .What Is the Composition of Our Body
D .Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain
D
The Elephant Project is a purpose-driven company which tries to protect and recover the world’s elephant population.
This all-female organization began when founder Kristian McKean saw the inhumane(不人道的)treatment of elephants in Thailand, and again back in the United States with circus animals. Determined to find a way to support elephant causes, Kristina used her product development

For ages, it’s been known that explaining a concept deepens your own understanding. The Roman thinker Seneca noted, “While we teach, we learn.” 16 It shows why teaching is a powerful way to learn and it has led to new methods that allow students to become instructors.
Studies show that students who tutor others work harder, remember better, and use
knowledge more effectively than those studying only for themselves. This “learning by teaching” effect is so strong that it even helps explain why older siblings often score higher on IQ tests — they spend time teaching their younger brothers and sisters. 17 They have college
students teach high school students, who then teach middle school students the same subjects.
The most advanced tool is the “teachable agent”. 18 It learns, makes mistakes, and asks questions. For example, a character named Betty’s Brain has been taught science by many middle school students. The students must organize their knowledge clearly and correct misunderstandings in order to teach Betty successfully. 19
20 Its questions make tutors think differently, and watching it solve problems lets students see their knowledge in action. Most importantly, the emotions involved — frustration
when the agent fails, and pride when it succeeds — deepen the learning experience and strengthen memory.
A .Researchers support this idea.
B .Educators are now using this idea in schools.
C .This process deepens their own understanding.
D .The experiences in teaching facilitate learning.
E .Modern science now confirms this ancient wisdom.
F .It is a computer program that acts like a real student.
G .The teachable agent also provides helpful feedback.

I used to hate being called upon in class mainly because I didn’t like having attention drawn to me. I would always look down at my desk, hoping the teacher would call on someone else. And unless otherwise assigned a seat by the teacher, I always chose to sit at the back of the classroom.
All this changed after I joined a sports team. It began when a teacher suggested I try out for the basketball team. To be honest, I almost laughed at the idea — me, on a basketball team At
first I thought it was a crazy idea because I didn’t have a good sense of balance, nor did I have the ability to keep pace with the others on the team — I was sure they would tease me. If it hadn’t
been for the teacher who kept insisting on “going for it,” I wouldn’t have decided to give it a try.
Getting up the courage to go to the tryouts was only half the battle! When I first started
attending the practice sessions, I didn’t even know the rules of the game, much less what I was
doing. Sometimes I’d get so confused that I’d freeze with the ball in my hands, not knowing
whether to pass or shoot — which made me feel really stupid. Fortunately, I wasn’t the only one “new” at the game. Among the newcomers was Leo, a tall, quiet guy who looked as lost as I was. We started watching each other’s moves and smiling weakly when we messed up. That shared
struggle made me feel less alone. So I decided to focus on learning the game, do my best at each practice session, and not be too hard on myself for the things I didn’t know just yet.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为 150 左右;
I practiced and practiced.

With my improved self-confidence came more praise from teachers and classmates.
1 .A 2 .C 3 .D
根据题干 the National Theatre of China 可知,定位到 National Theatre of China段落处,根据“This production of Shakespeare’s Richard III will be directed by the National’s
故选 A。
例如第 1 题,根据题目“Which play will be performed by the National Theatre of China ” ,由题目中出现的关键信息 the National Theatre of China ,直接定位第一篇宣传广告,在文中找到“This production ofShakespeare’s Richard III will be directed by the National’s Associate
4 .B 5 .D 6 .A 7 .B
根据划线词前一句提到“Our area had just been in the path of Hurricane Irma, causing downed trees (我们所在的地区刚刚在飓风厄玛的路径中,这导致树木倒塌)”及后一句提到“We were stuck in the dark and cut off from the outside world.( 我们被困在黑暗中,与外界
由“stuck in the dark”可推知,划线词 outages 是指“ 电力中断”,
Now we have stored up flashlights, lanterns and candles. We
bought a battery-operated radio to keep up with the news. We stocked up on batteries so that we'd have plenty for extended power failures. We make sure our grill (烤架) is ready and its tank is full, and we purchase food that can be easily prepared and then cooked or heated on the grill. And we
don’t forget to buy emergency chocolate! We have book lights to read in the dark. We keep our
car gas tanks full and have emergency cash on hand.
根据第四段中的“but we wouldn’t have learned to do all those things if we
hadn’t encountered a storm in the past. (但如果我们过去没有遇到风暴,我们就不会学会做所有这些事情)”以及“They can teach us some valuable lessons. 故选 A。
根据最后一段中的“Now is the time to get ready, not when the storm arrives.
根据第二段第一句““A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says.(他说:“一个人的体表质量是肌肉、脂肪、骨头、血液,甚至是我们肺中携带的空气的组合。”)”
When you start to change your body composition with your
workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight
may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease.(当你开始通过锻炼来改变你的身体组成——通过增加更多的肌肉量和减少体脂——你的体重可能会增加,而体脂率可能会降低。)”
根据倒数第二段“Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight(水大约占一个人体重的65%到90%)”可知,人体的含水量约占人体体重的65%到90%。
Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds “That’s normal, and it doesn’t
mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in
Miami Beach, Florida.(你是否一直在锻炼,饮食也很健康,但当你站在秤上时,秤上显示你胖了几磅?“这很正常,这并不意味着你的锻炼没有效果,”佛罗里达州迈阿密海滩的运动生理学家 Jeffrey A. Dolgan 说。)”和第二段的“Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while
working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.(在例 行锻炼后,身体各个部位的质量百分比会立即发生 15%的变化。 D 项“Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain (为什么我锻炼后体重反而增加了?)”
12 .B 13 .D 14 .B 15 .C

47 .I practiced and practiced. After training, Leo and I often stayed to pass the ball. At first, we
dropped it many times. But we kept trying and even laughed about our mistakes. Slowly, my skills improved. One day, during practice, I caught Leo’s pass and threw the ball. It went straight into
the basket! Everyone stopped and looked. For a moment, I couldn’t believe it. Then my teammates cheered. That simple success made me feel stronger inside.
With my improved self-confidence came more praise from teachers and classmates. Now, I find
myself raising my hand in class. Last week, when our English teacher asked a question, I shared
my idea even though I wasn’t fully certain. To my surprise, she smiled and said, “Good point!”
After class, a classmate told me, “You explained that really well.” I realize now that trying is what matters most. I still have more to learn on the court and in class, but I’m no longer afraid of being seen trying.
