Last year, five homeless cats lived in the shadows in our neighborhood, silently asking for help. Every day, I saw them huddled together, their fur matted and eyes filled with hope and
. As I watched them, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I needed to take action.
Every morning, I put cat food near our building. The cats appeared, at first, then
rushing toward me as if they had been waiting all along. Feeding them became a ritual that
strengthened our bond. As winter approached, my grew. I couldn’t bear the thought of those creatures suffering in the biting cold. I then set up cozy corners for them in the damp basement of our building.
However, not everyone shared my compassion. One neighbor insisted on getting rid of the cats. He called Animal Control to have them . Our debates were heated, but I
advocated for them as I knew they had no one else to defend them.
As weeks passed, I felt an urge to find loving homes for the cats. I friends and posted on social media. To my delight, four of them found new families. Each felt like a victory in my mission to make a difference. Then there was one cat, Joy, who stole my heart
completely. When I took him in, it was as if he had always _________ in my home. His playful
and silly behaviour brought laughter to my days, and his gentle purring at night brought me peace.
Through this experience, I’ve found in my voice, learning to advocate for the voiceless. I’ve learned we all have the power to make the world a better place for all beings, no matter how small our actions may seem. Whether it’s feeding a stray, advocating for animal
welfare, or merely kindness in our communities, every effort counts.

On a warm afternoon at the shore, my four-year-old son, Wilson, and I headed to the beach, our favorite evening escape. The sun was still bright as Wilson happily raced to the water’s edge, letting the waves wet him. It’s hard to believe that not long ago, his sensitivities from autism (自闭症) kept him from approaching the beach. After years of treatment, he now loves our seaside
adventures, which fills me with joy.
We used to look for seashells to fill our bucket (桶). On this day, there didn’t seem to be too many shells washed up on the shore. As we collected seashells, I searched for perfect ones, while Wilson filled our bucket with broken pieces. I wondered why he was doing that. When I suggested finding whole shells, he simply gave me a puzzled look and continued picking up
whatever he found, content with his unique collection.
I continued my search for a while and then stopped to watch him place more broken shells into the bucket. Again, I stopped, but this time I asked in a firm voice, “Wilson, why do you keep filling our bucket with shells that are broken ”
He looked up at me and said, “Mom, there are more broken shells on the beach than perfect ones. We’ll fill the bucket faster with these broken ones.”
True, I thought, but who wants a bucketful of broken shells Wilson stared at me and said, “Mom, these shells are broken, but they are still beautiful.”
“You’re right, Wilson,” I replied.
“And, Mom, this one looks like a smile when you hold it this way,” he said as he reached for another broken shell. “It reminds me of a clown. This one is round like the sun.”
Tears filled my eyes as I realized my son was teaching me an important lesson. I took out the perfect shells I had collected and placed them back on the beach. Wilson and I walked along, gathering only broken shells, and admiring their beauty. Back at our beach house, we washed the shells and proudly displayed our “broken shell garden”. It reminded us that none of us are perfect, but we all have unique beauty. Now, we collect only broken shells, finding beauty in their
imperfections and learning from them.
24 .How did the author feel upon seeing her son’s collection of broken shells at first

26 .In the end, the author .
A .encouraged her son to find faults in shells B .changed her view on broken shells
C .blamed her son for being unique D .kept her belief in perfection
27 .What can we learn from this passage
A .No sweet without sweat. B .Beauty is for a feeling heart.
C .Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. D .A shell in the hand is worth two in the sea.

A butterfly’s wings can have many jobs besides keeping the insect high up in the air. They may be used to attract mates, or to warn potential attackers to stay away. All of these roles,
though, depend on their unchanging colouration. This plays into the idea that butterfly wings are dead tissue, like a bird’s feathers. In fact, that’s not true. For example, in some species males’
wings have special cells releasing some chemicals which attract females.
Nanfang Yu, a physicist at Columbia University, in New York, has been looking into the matter. Together with Naomi Pierce, a butterfly specialist at Harvard University, he has now
shown, in a paper published in Nature Communications in February, 2020, that butterfly wings are, indeed, very much alive.
In their experiments, the two researchers used a laser (激光) to heat up spots on the wings of dozens of butterfly species. When the temperature of the area under the laser reached 40°C or so, the insects responded within seconds by doing things that stopped their wings heating up
further. These actions included a butterfly turning around to minimize its profile to the laser, moving its wings up and down or simply walking away.
Butterflies engaged in all of these heat-minimising activities even when the researchers
blindfolded them. That suggested the relevant sensors were on the wings themselves. Dr Yu and Dr Pierce therefore searched those wings for likely looking sensory cells. They found some, in the form of neurons (神经元) that were similar to heat detectors known from other insects. They also
uncovered disc-shaped cells that appeared to be similar to pressure-sensitive neurons. They guess that these are there to detect deformation ofthe wing — information an insect could use to control its flight pattern.
The third discovery they made to contradict the “dead wing” idea was that some butterfly wings have a heartbeat. A butterfly’s wings have veins (翅脉). These carry a bloodlike liquid
which, researchers have now found in males, shows a pulse (脉搏) of several dozen beats per
minute. The source of this pulse appears to be the scent pad (气味垫) , a dark spot on the wings that produces the female-attracting chemicals. Apparently, this “wing heart” acts as a pump that helps bloodlike liquid through the scent pad.
In all their experiments simulating different environmental conditions, Dr Yu and Dr Pierce consistently found that, different parts ofthe wing are covered by different sorts of scales (鳞屑). In particular, tubes pass through scales over the scent pads. This improves their ability to spread
heat away and helps keep the living parts of a butterfly’s wings alive.
28 .A bird’s feathers are mentioned in Paragraph 1 to .
A .introduce the latest research findings on a bird
B .highlight the special feature of a bird’s feathers
C .show common knowledge about butterfly wings
D .stress the difference between a butterfly and a bird
29 .What can we learn from Dr Yu and Dr Pierce’s experiments
A .Butterfly wings are complicated living organs.
B .Butterfly wings have little reaction to external heat.
C .The scent pads on some male butterfly wings are their hearts.
D .Heat-minimising activities help detect deformation of the wings.
30 .Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A .Seeing Is Believing B .More Than Meets The Eye
C .Nothing Seek, Nothing Find D .Fine Feathers Make Fine Birds
D
In college, I was taught an elegant theory of chemical combination based on excess
electrons going into holes in the orbital shell of a neighbouring atom. But what about diatomic
compounds like oxygen gas Don't ask; students aren't ready to know. In physics, in biology, in any other science classes, students frequently get that answer too.
It’s time to trust students to handle doubt and diversity in science. Actually, students are
starting to act. They have shamed their seniors into including more diverse contributors as faculty members and role models. Young scholars rudely ask their superiors why they fail to address the extinction crises clarified by their research. The inherited authoritarian political structures of
science education are becoming lame—but still remain largely unchanged from the old school days.
A narrow, rigid education does not prepare anyone for the complexities of scientific
research, applications and policy. If we discourage students from inquiring into the real nature of scientific truths, or exploring how society shapes the questions that researchers ask how can we prepare them to maintain public trust in science in our “post-truth” world Diversity and doubt
produce creativity: we must make room for them, and stop guiding future scientists into narrow specialties that value technique over thought.
In science, even foundational building blocks can be questioned. The unifying patterns of the periodic table are now questioned under closer examination. Some scientists now wonder
whether the concept of biological “species” contributes more confusion than insight, and whether it should therefore be abandoned. However, such a decision would affect conservation policy, in which identification of endangered species is crucial—so it is not just an issue for basic science.
Science students generally remain unaware that concepts such as elements and species are contested or are even contestable. In school, college and beyond, curricula highlight the technical and hide the reflective. Public arguments among scientists often presume that every problem has just one solution.
Nonetheless, uncertain advice on complex issues should be a warning that, from a future perspective, today's total scientific consensus on some policy issue might have been the result of stubbornness, a conflict of interest or worse. Just as a healthy democracy accommodates dissent and dissonance, the collective consciousness of science would do well to embrace doubt and
diversity. This could start with teaching science as a great, flawed, ongoing human achievement, rather than as a collection of cut-and-dried eternal (永久的)truths.
I recall a legendary chemistry professor who was not skilful at getting classroom
demonstrations to work—but discussing what went wrong helped his students to thrive. A
mathematician friend let pupils discuss every statement in the textbook until all were satisfied.
They did very well in exams, and taught themselves when he was absent. Treating people at all levels as committed thinkers, whose asking teaches us all, is the key to tackling the challenges to science in the post-trust age.
31 .The problem of current science training is that .
A .students cannot become specialists
B .it goes against established science education
C .students lose trust in their teachers and professors
D .it fails to provide students with what they need in future
32 .The periodic table is mentioned to prove that .
A .even the widely accepted can be challenged
B .students are generally ignorant of science
C .most previous researches are out of date
D .science has been developing with time
33 .It can be learnt from the passage that .
A .students may be more innovative if they are allowed to doubt
B .science students do not contest elements or species
C .students should not trust established science
D .diversity prevents progress in science
34 .Which of the following statements best represents the writer’s opinion
A .Our curricula highlight the technical and hide the reflective.
B .Science should be a collection of cut-and-dried eternal truths.
C .Teachers should treat people at all levels as committed thinkers.
D .The concept of biological species brings more confusion than insight.
Website copywriting involves writing text and copy for websites. 35 Commercial
websites may require standard sales-style copywriting, while informative or educational websites could require more structured material.
Almost all websites require some type of website copywriting. The material on a website is important not only to attract customers, but also to raise page ranks and create search engine
traffic. This means that website copywriting can be somewhat different from regular writing because writers must write for two audiences.
Search engine optimization (SEO) can sometimes be important in website copywriting.
SEO refers to the process of creating copy that is tailored toward catching the attention of popular search engines. 36 .
An understanding of keywords and search engine behavior are important for SEO when
writing copy for the web. 37 If those keywords are used properly and in the proper
places within the article, more traffic will come to the website via a search engine, and the owner of the website could have the potential of making more money.
Website copywriters often have to have both a writing background and a marketing
background. A person who is acting as a website copywriter for a site usually needs to be able to write active prose that inspires action. They also need to be able to drive traffic to the site, so that customers can see the products for sale.
Being able to write effective sales copy may also be essential for website copywriting. 38 Content has to be well written in order to accomplish its goal, and adherence to standard writing rules is often a prerequisite to a well-written article.
39 People browsing the web tend to read differently than people reading a book or a newspaper. So the content must capture their attention quickly and be relatively easy to read, which often involves writing prose that is easily readable. Headings, bullet points, and simple
language are often preferred as a result.
A .The type of copy that is required varies depending on the type of website.
B .Online companies may offer informational articles about products and services.
C .Website copywriters have to be familiar with basic grammar, style, and structure rules.
D .Internet copywriting also involves the composition of short headlines or advertisements.
E .Theoretically, the higher the SEO, the higher the number of readers that will be directed to the website.
F .Website copy not only serves the overall function of the website, but needs to capture the attention of readers.
G .This means copy for a website may have to contain certain keywords that people search when looking for something.
The last thing I wanted to hear when my government-sponsored scholarship was withdrawn during my final year of college was: "Things are working out for your own good. Just give them
some time." Those words just stirred a lot of anger in me.
Then I read the story of the Chinese bamboo farmer, which gave me a different view on
life. The seed of the Chinese bamboo is planted in the ground like every seed. It is watered, and
fed with nutrients daily, but it shows no immediate physical response and doesn't appear to grow. The farmer continues to water and feed the seed in year one, year two, and year three. No growth is seen until the fourth year, when the seed finally breaks through the ground. Then, in the space
of just five weeks, it grows ninety feet tall. The Chinese bamboo grows to its full capacity within 5 years.
Despite not seeing an immediate result, the farmer had trust in what he was doing. He
continued to water and feed the plant for four years, because he believed that if he played his own role and did all that a farmer was supposed to do, then he would be given his reward at the right
time. That trust and patience is what kept the farmer persistently feeding his seed for four years before enjoying the reward in the end.
Life is not always straightforward. Most often, it's not a matter of 5+5 =10 (Sum 1).
Life can be more like 2+1+2+0+0+0+1+2+0+0+1 + 1=10 (Sum 2).
Both sums lead to the same result, but through quite different paths and processes. To be mature is to accept that things might look rough right now but the story can still have a great
ending.
We might live in a microwave generation where everything seems to happen instantly; but many things still obey the laws of nature. Just doing what you are supposed to be doing, having
patience like the Chinese bamboo farmer, and trusting that things will work out for you can help you get through the toughest times.
40 .What happened to the author in the final year of college
41 .How does the Chinese bamboo grow in the fourth year
42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. To overcome difficulties, we need to trust that things will work out and simply wait patiently for the great ending to come.
43 .Which is your life more like, Sum 1 or Sum 2 Explain why. (about 40 words)

I wondered why he was doing that. When I suggested finding
whole shells, he simply gave me a puzzled look and continued picking up whatever he found,
content with his unique collection.(我想知道他为什么要那样做。
When I suggested finding whole shells, he simply gave me a
puzzled look and continued picking up whatever he found, content with his unique collection.(当
以及第五段“Mom, these shells are broken, but they are still beautiful.(妈妈,这些贝壳是破碎的,但它们仍然很美。)”
Tears filled my eyes as I realized my son was teaching me an important lesson. I took out the perfect shells I had collected and placed them back on the beach.
Wilson and I walked along, gathering only broken shells, and admiring their beauty.(当我意识到儿子给我上了重要的一课,泪水充满了我的眼睛。
Beauty is for a feeling

All of these roles, though, depend on their unchanging
colouration. This plays into the idea that butterfly wings are dead tissue, like a bird’s feathers.
When the temperature of the area under the laser reached 40°C or so, the insects responded within seconds by doing things that stopped their wings heating up
further. 以及第四段中“They found some, in the form of neurons (神经
元) that were similar to heat detectors known from other insects. They also uncovered disc-shaped cells that appeared to be similar to pressure-sensitive neurons. 和第五段中“The third discovery they made to contradict the “dead wing”
idea was that some butterfly wings have a heartbeat. 故选 A。
Together with Naomi Pierce, a butterfly

Don't ask; students aren't ready to know. In physics, in
biology, in any other science classes, students frequently get that answer too.”(别问,学生们还没准备好知道。 ,第三段第一句“A narrow, rigid education does not prepare anyone for the complexities of scientific
research, applications and policy.”(狭隘、僵化的教育不能使任何人为科学研究、应用和政策的复杂性做好准备。)
由第四段中的“In science, even foundational building blocks can be questioned. The unifying patterns of the periodic table are now questioned under closer examination.”(在科学领域,甚至基础的构成要素也可能受到质疑。 故选 A 项。
Diversity and doubt produce creativity: we must make room for them, and stop guiding future scientists into narrow specialties that value technique over
故选 A 项。
Treating people at all levels as committed thinkers,
whose asking teaches us all, is the key to tackling the challenges to science in the post-trust age.”
如在第 3 小题中,第三段最后一句“Diversity and doubt produce creativity: we must make room for them, and stop guiding future scientists into narrow specialties that value technique over thought.”,是已知部分,通过结合原文进行合理地逻辑判断,可推断出如果允许学生怀疑,学生可能更具创新性。故选 A

35.根据上文“Website copywriting involves writing text and copy for websites.(网站文案包括为网站编写文本和文案)”以及后文“Commercial websites may require standard sales-style
copywriting, while informative or educational websites could require more structured material.(商业网站可能需要标准的销售风格的文案,而信息性或教育性网站可能需要更结构化的材料)”可知,上文对网站文案进行了解释,而后文提到了商业网站和信息性或教育性网站需要不同类型的文案,故 A 选项“所需的文案类型因网站类型而异”符合语境,故选 A。
Search engine optimization(SEO) can sometimes be important in website
copywriting. SEO refers to the process of creating copy that is tailored toward catching the
37 .根据上文“An understanding of keywords and search engine behavior are important for SEO when writing copy for the web.(了解关键词和搜索引擎的行为是重要的搜索引擎优化时写的网页拷贝)”以及后文“If those keywords are used properly and in the proper places within the
article. more traffic will come to the website via a search engine, and the owner of the website
could have the potential of making more money.(如果这些关键字被正确地使用在文章的适当
Being able to write effective sales copy may also be essential for website
well written in order to accomplish its goal, and adherence to standard writing rules is often a
People browsing the web tend to read differently than people reading a book or a newspaper. So the content must capture their attention quickly and be relatively easy to read,

overcome difficulties, we need to trust that things will work out and simply wait patiently for the great ending to come.
(1)According to the passage, to overcome difficulties, we need to do what we are supposed to be doing rather than simply wait patiently for the great ending to come.
(2)To overcome difficulties, we need to trust things will work out, have patience and do what we are supposed to be doing. 43 .Sum 2. My life is also full of ups and downs. For example, I was never good at chemistry and failed the mid-exam in senior 1. With patience and

The last thing I wanted to hear when my
government-sponsored scholarship was withdrawn during my final year of college was(当我的政府奖学金在大学最后一年被取消时,我最不想听到的就是)”可知,在大学最后一年作者的府奖学金被取消了。 The author's government-sponsored scholarship was withdrawn.
No growth is seen until the fourth year, when the seed finally breaks through the ground. Then, in the space of just five weeks, it grows
ninety feet tall.
The seed finally breaks through the ground and the bamboo grows ninety feet tall in five weeks.。
Just doing what you are supposed to be doing,
having patience like the Chinese bamboo farmer, and trusting that things will work out for you can help you get through the toughest times. 所以“simply wait patiently for the great ending to come”处错误,答案为(1)According to the passage, to overcome difficulties, we need to do
what we are supposed to be doing rather than simply wait patiently for the great ending to come.
(2)To overcome difficulties, we need to trust things will work out, have patience and do what we are supposed to be doing.
根据最后一段最后一句“Just doing what you are supposed to be doing, having patience like the Chinese bamboo farmer, and trusting that things will work out for you can help you get through the toughest times. (做你应该做的事,像中国的竹农一样有耐心,相信事情会解决的,这能帮助你度过最艰难的时刻)”可知,生活不是一蹴而就,而是通过一点一点的努力,耐心的等待和坚定的信念来达到目标,所以答案最好是回答你的生活像 Sum 2 一样,并按照最后一段最后一句来解释原因,可以通过举出生活中的具体例子来体现。故答案为 Sum 2. My life is also full of ups and downs. For example, I was never good at chemistry and failed the mid-exam in senior 1. With patience and determination, I made every effort to turn the
tide. It was not a smooth path, but I got an A in the final exam in senior 3.
44.Dear Jim,
Excited about your plan to participate in “The Beauty of Campus” activity! I’m eager to share my suggestions about what to create.
I believe it would be a wonderful idea to shoot a video highlighting the heartfelt bonds
between students and teachers. You can capture footage of bustling offices where teachers
diligently help students with their academic challenges. To add a more heartwarming touch, you could interview students and incorporate their appreciation for teachers’ guidance, support, and
the positive impact they’ve had on their lives into the video. Their honest remarks would not only beautifully show the dynamic campus life, but also portray the beauty of character.
What do you think of my ideas Feel free to ask me any questions during your shooting.
Yours,
Li Hua
