My first guitar lesson ended in pain, confusion and defeat, but I was completely absorbed. At 10, I felt a deep connection to this mysterious instrument. Since then, guitars have been my
life.
Through aching fingers and weary arms, guitars tapped into my deep emotions. With
practice, the pain faded, and I grew closer to the instrument. The calluses (老茧) on my fingertips became badges (勋章) of honor, filling me with pride. The sensations of playing became second nature, offering momentary excellence. I lost count of the magic instants when I was transported to a different reality. Picking up a guitar always returns me to that wide-eyed 10-year-old, leaving me calmer and re-energized.
The joy is enhanced when I witness its impact on others. In my late teens, our band
performed at hospitals, children’s camps and seniors’ homes. The smiles and dancing of the audience still remain with me. Guitars also bridged cultural divides. When I traveled, shared rhythms with fellow musicians stirred up beautiful, wordless conversations.
The guitar has marked many defining moments in my life—performing for my wife,
accompanying my children and comforting me in adversity. It centers and calms me. Many years ago, I thought I was picking up a guitar for the first and only time. Instead, it claimed me for a
lifetime. I credit it to my parents, whose encouragement and belief in my potential paved the way for a lifelong passion.
For anyone fortunate enough, there’s an “instrument” waiting to be found—something that connects them to themselves and others. It might not be a guitar; it could be a paintbrush or a
sport. What matters is the sense of belonging it brings. Now, hearing my son’s guitar flow through the house at night, I hope it touches his soul as deeply as it has touched mine.
4 .Why did the author consider the calluses as badges of honor
A .They displayed his musical talent. B .They reminded him of the childhood.
C .They symbolized his journey of growth. D .They represented the hardship of his life.
5 .What do the author’s experiences show in paragraph 3
A .Travel makes a full man. B .Joy shared is joy doubled.
C .A smile breaks down barriers. D .Where words fail, dancing speaks.
6 .What kept the author playing the guitar
A .His parents’ support. B .His desire for fame.
C .His children’s company. D .His wife’s admiration.
7 .What does the author mainly intend to convey
A .Facing challenges is a must in life. B .Music serves as a universal language.
C .Having a lifelong passion is a blessing. D .Family members matter more than anything.

When you picture a zoo, what do you see A lone bear in a concrete cage, pacing aimlessly in front of tourists Or a group of volunteers, trying desperately to clean the body of the giant
panda The role of zoos is unclear at first thought. On the one hand, funding from zoos comes from visitors and donors, so to attract the public, zoos must put on a good show. On the other hand, there is a growing cry to protect the animal kingdom from conservation-concerned
individuals. That puts zoos in a dilemma.
London Zoo, which opened to members in 1828 as the first scientific zoo, opened its doors to the public 19 years later as it was not receiving sufficient funding. However, when the
environmental movement was born in the late 20th Century, London Zoo began to change its
focus. In the same year when the IUCN Red List was first published, London Zoo worked with
Phoenix Zoo on a cooperative programme to boost Arabian oryx (大羚羊) numbers. London Zoo soon became the model on how to run a zoo that can satisfy both its visitors and its inhabitants.
Some zoos did not follow suit. The reputation of SeaWorld declined, following the
documentary Blackfish, an exposure on SeaWorld’s poor treatment of their killer whales. It is
clear from their website that sea creatures’ wellbeing and conservation are not SeaWorld’s
priority. They are happy to advertise their sea lion shows and penguin petting experiences, but
their conservation “mission” is tucked neatly into a dusty corner of the website. Knowing that
places such as SeaWorld may not provide the best care for their animals, we continue to give them our money.
However, we should not stop visiting zoos. Zoos are essential to our education. Zoos are
outdoors, soul-lifting, and in need of footfall to remain open and serving the animal kingdom. So research zoos before you visit them. Only pay for tickets to zoos that commit to conservation, aim to educate rather than entertain and have high animal welfare standards. Do not tolerate any less. Celebrate zoos which do it right.
8 .What leads to the dilemma in paragraph 1
A .The protest from volunteers. B .The competition among zoos.
C.The pressure from funding and conservation. D.The conflict between visitors and zoo keepers.
9 .Why is London Zoo mentioned
A .To give an example. B .To introduce an opinion.
C .To make a prediction. D .To recommend a destination.
10 .What does the underlined word “tucked” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A .Written. B .Divided. C .Hidden. D .Combined.
11 .What does the author suggest visitors do in the last paragraph
A .Celebrate the animal shows. B .Fund the poorly-managed zoos.
C .Recognize zoos devoted to protection. D .Increase their visits to different zoos.

In a contest for jobs requiring the most patience, art restoration might take first place.
Traditionally, conservators restore paintings by recreating the artwork’s exact colors to fill in the damage, one spot at a time. Even with the help of X-ray imaging and coloring analyses, several parts of the expensive process, such as the cleaning and restoring, are done by hand. Meanwhile, direct restoring might devalue the painter’s original vision.
That’s where Alex Kachkine comes in. The MIT student has developed a way to apply
digital restorations onto a damaged painting. In short, the approach involves using pre-existing AI
tools to create a digital version of what the freshly painted artwork would have looked like. Based on this version, Kachkine’s new software creates a digital map of the retouches (修复点) with
exact colors, necessary to fill the gaps present in the painting today.
The digital map is then printed onto two layers of thin, transparent (透明的) film — one with colored retouches and one with the same pattern in white. The film with two layers forms a mask. This mask is attached to the painting to position the retouches, which helps achieve a
faithful restoration in just hours — instead of months of work.
Kachkine demonstrated the approach on a 15th-century oil painting in need of restoration, by a Dutch artist whose name is now unknown. The retouches were generated by matching the
surrounding color, copying similar patterns visible elsewhere in the painting or the artist’s style in other paintings. Overall, the painting’s 5,612 damaged regions were filled with 57, 314 different colors in 3.5 hours — 66 hours faster than traditional methods would have likely taken.
The new process still poses concerns, such as whether the applied film disturbs the viewing experience or whether AI-generated corrections to the painting are accurate. Still, Kachkine says this technique could help address the large number of damaged artworks that live in storage
rooms, enabling the restoration of countless damaged paintings considered not deserving of high conservation budgets.
12 .What can we know about traditional art restoration
A .It causes more damage. B .It consumes more labor.
C .It lacks technical assistance. D .It adds the value of an artwork.
13 .What can Kachkine’s new software do
A .Decorate the damaged paintings. B .Make a map of colored retouches.
C .Create a vivid copy of the painting. D .Promote the application of AI tools.
14 .How were the retouches of 15th-century oil painting achieved
A .By applying extra colors. B .By referring to other painters’ works.
C .By learning from traditional methods. D .By studying the artist’s painting techniques.
15 .Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A .How AI Influences Our Future B .A New Brush for Art Restoration
C .When Restoration Meets Tight Budgets D .A Rising Conservator of Ancient Paintings

Joanna Wright, a senior political science major, loves coffee and goes to the cafe at least six days a week. 19 “Catherine always has a huge smile on her face, which always puts me in a
cheerful mood,” Wright said.

With three little babies, I never took a break, completely ignoring any self-care. When I was too tired to make myself dinner, I’d just eat the kids’ leftover cereal (麦片粥). I thought this was a great plan to lose some weight and called it the “Cereal for Diet.” Back then,I knew nothing about nutrition. Of course, the Cereal for Diet failed, as did all my other attempts.
One day, after cleaning up all the mess my kids had made, I went out for a walk. I passed a gym. I looked away.Healthy people went there, but this was not me. While turning away,I saw an ad for a six-month fitness challenge. I continued my fast walk in the opposite direction, but that
sign just stayed on my mind.
I still remember what finally motivated me to sign up for the challenge. It was a ten-minute period in which my son threw his spaghetti plate straight up, sending noodles and sauce flying
everywhere. As soon as my husband got home,I said, “You’re in charge.”
I made a beeline for the gym, marched straight in and said, “Fix me.” And I was assigned a young and fit trainer, Emily. She asked what my goals were for the six-month challenge. At that moment, I was speechless. Noticing my embarrassment, Emily just handed me the heaviest
weights I had in my life and said, “Okay, so in six months you will compete in a body-building
show.” I tried explaining, “No, I don’t want to do a show. That sounds scary.” She ignored my fear, and we jumped into strict workouts and nutrition planning.
Over the next six months, Emily forced me to focus on myself— my wants and my needs. I learned to see food as strength and sweat as progress. I learned how to fuel my body instead of
starving it, balancing proteins, carbs, and fats. Emily pushed me past my limits, correcting my form, timing my breaks, and cheering me on when I wanted to quit. I improved every day in the gym.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
One day, Emily handed me an application form.

Traditionally, conservators restore paintings by recreating the artwork’s exact colors to fill in the damage, one spot at a time. Even with the help of X-ray
imaging and coloring analyses, several parts of the expensive process, such as the cleaning and
根据第二段中“Based on this version, Kachkine’s new software creates a digital map of the retouches (修复点) with exact colors, necessary to fill the gaps present in the painting today.( 基于这个版本,Kachkine 的新软件用精确的颜色创建了一个数字地图,填补了今天绘画中存在的空白。)”
The retouches were generated by matching the surrounding color, copying similar patterns visible elsewhere in the painting or the artist’s style in other
That’s where Alex Kachkine comes in. The MIT student has developed a way to apply digital restorations onto a damaged painting. In short, the
approach involves using pre-existing AI tools to create a digital version of what the freshly
painted artwork would have looked like.( 这就是 Alex Kachkine 的用武之地。

“Hello, how is your day ” Even when the line is getting longer, she doesn’t let it get in the way of her genuine conversations. D 选项“After finishing an order, she calls out the name on the cup. 中的“finishing an order”衔接“make the drinks” ,“calls out the name” 引出顾客接饮品的场景,形成“制作—叫号—交付” 的完整流程。故选 D 项。

work on time. 及下文“I do so because I like to make coffee for the students. “starts her day off good”解释了“每周去六天” 的动机,且“cheerful mood”与墨菲的微笑服务形成因果关系。故选 F 项。
20.根据下文“She has every intention of staying and continuing doing what she loves. (她完全打
算留下来,继续做自己喜欢的事。)”可推知,设空处需体现她对工作的长期投入。G 选项“She has served here for 17 years and can’t imagine working anywhere else.

One day, Emily handed me an application form. “You’re ready,” she said with a confident smile. It was for a local body-building show, the very thing I’d once feared. My heart raced as I looked at the form, but then I thought of all the progress I'd made. I took a deep breath and filled it out, determined to face my fear. I knew this was a chance to prove to myself that I could achieve something I never thought possible.
Soon, I jumped into weeks of preparation. Every day, I spent hours in the gym, following
Emily’s strict workout plan. I also paid close attention to my diet, making sure I got the right
nutrients. As the show day drew near, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. But with
Emily’s constant encouragement and support, I felt more and more confident. Finally, the big day arrived, and I stepped onto the stage, ready to show the world what I’d accomplished.
