My adventure with pottery began unexpectedly online. I saw a video of a person making a late-night snack, but what truly caught my eye was the plate — a beautifully simple, cream-colored piece with a unique bubbled shape. I had never seen anything like it and immediately wanted one, I imagined all the meals I could present on it and how lovely they would look.
However, it was quite expensive. I couldn’t justify the purchase, so a bold idea struck me: Why not make it myself I admitted this was a little unreasonable. My only experience with clay was from a brief encounter in elementary school. Yet, driven by the desire for that unique plate and then a wish to learn something new, I signed up
for a pottery class last April.
I entered the first class confidently, but reality soon hit. In the beginning,
handling clay — which seemed so simple — was much harder for me, a rather
carefree girl, than I had anticipated. My posture was wrong; I failed to center the clay
on the wheel; I even couldn’t control its speed properly. Once, I spun the wheel too fast and made my piece flying across the room. I felt embarrassed and thought about quitting right then.
However, I was not the one to give up easily. I continued attending class. By the third session, a shift occurred. I concentrated on steadying my elbows, gently
applying pressure to the clay, and slowly pulling up the walls to form a bowl. The
quiet rhythmic sound of the spinning wheel had a calming effect. To my surprise, by the end of that class, I had created my first real piece — a small, imperfect, yet
completely handmade bowl.
That semester taught me more than pottery; it taught me perseverance, and how to find beauty in imperfection. I left with several bowls and a vase. The
bubble-shaped plate remained my goal in my next round of classes. This journey
reminded me that true value lies not in a perfect product, but in the rewarding process of creating something with my own hands.

We already know how watching other people’s lives on social media can
negatively affect our self-esteem (自尊) and satisfaction with our own lives.
Apparently, using apps to track your own calories or fitness activities can have a similar effect. New research from scientists at University College London (UCL) suggests that fitness apps can actually become major demotivators.
The researchers analyzed nearly 60,000 posts on the X platform. This data is particularly valuable because unlike traditional surveys, people tend to share honest, unfiltered (直白真实的) opinions online. The posts included feedback on popular
apps. Such as MyFitnessPal. Around 13,000 posts contained negative keywords the researchers tracked — and over half mentioned the calorie-counting app
MyFitnessPal.
At first glance, MyFitnessPal seems to offer everything you need to stay on top of your fitness and diet. It allows users to track calorie intake, monitor proteins, and set personalized goals. You can simply import recipes or scan bar codes from food
packages — the app will do the rest offering you guidance on what and when to eat. Sounds like working with a personal dietitian.
However, many people are not necessarily that gratified about it. Senior author Dr. PaulinaBondaronek explained, “In these posts, we found a lot of blame and
shame, with people feeling they were not doing as well as they should be. These emotional effects may end up harming people’s motivation and health.”
MyFitnessPal is also pretty easy to “fool”, since it’s up to users whether to log or skip a meal. This creates a false sense that if something isn’t recorded in the app. it “didn’t happen”. Many admitted cheating(e. g., not logging a post-dinner cup of ice cream) to feel better, but this only led to more guilt. In some cases, people quit the
app and their healthy habits altogether.
It’s important to note the study only analyzed negative posts, so there’s no scientifically proven data on fitness apps’ benefits. However, their harm is hard to ignore. This is a clear wake-up call for developers to consider their products’
unintended consequences.
8 .What do we know about MyFitnessPal
A .It offers comprehensive fitness support. B .It tracks health via exercise data.
C .It automatically logs every meal intake.D .It provides personalized dietitian services.
9 .What does the underlined word “gratified” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A .Puzzled. B .Satisfied. C .Astonished. D .Concerned.
10 .What should app developers do according to the author
A .highlight the interactivity of apps. B .Make apps more user-friendly to use.
C .Adapt superior technology to track activities. D .Be mindful of apps’ harmful impacts.
11 .What is the best title for the text
A .Social Media vs Fitness Apps B .How to Choose Fitness Apps
C .MyFitnessPal: A Perfect Fitness App D .Fitness Apps: Unexpected Harms

Scientists at Finland’s Aalto University have found that using artificial
intelligence (AI) almost removes and reverses (逆转)the Dunning-Kruger effect, a
phenomenon that people who aren’t very good at a given task are overconfident,
while people with high ability tend to underestimate their skills. Their research
showed that when using common chatbots to solve problems, everyone (regardless of their skill level) tended to put too much faith in the quality of the answers, with the
most experienced AI users doing so the most.
In the study, scientists gave 500 subjects logical reasoning tasks, with half
allowed to use ChatGPT. Both groups were later quizzed on both their AI literacy and how well they thought they performed, and promised extra rewards if they assessed
their own performance accurately.
The reasons behind the findings are varied. Because AI users were usually
satisfied with their answer after only one question or prompt (提示), accepting the
answer without further checking or confirmation, they can be said to have engaged in what Robin Welsch, an Aalto University computer scientist, calls “cognitive (认知) offloading” — exploring the question with reduced reflection, and approaching it in a
more “shallow” way.
Such less engagement in our own reasoning means we bypass the usual
feedback process of critical thinking, which reduces our ability to assess our
performance accurately. Even more revealing was the fact that we all overestimate
our abilities when using AI, regardless of our intelligence, with the gap between
high-and low-skill users reducing. The study owed this to the fact that large language models (LLMs) help everyone perform better to some degree. Meanwhile, the Aalto team warned of several potential impacts as AI becomes more widespread.
Firstly, metacognitive accuracy overall might suffer. Without reflecting on
results, error checking or deeper reasoning, we risk weakening our ability to source
information reliably, the scientists said in the study. What’s more, the flattening of the Dunning-Kruger Effect will mean we’ll all continue to overestimate our abilities
while using AI, with the more AI-literate among us doing so even more — leading to an increased climate of miscalculated decision-making and a drop in their skills.
12 .What did Aalto University researchers discover about AI chatbot use
A .Low-ability users became less confident.
B .It strengthened the Dunning-Kruger Effect.
C .Users generally over-trusted the chatbot’s answers.
D .Only beginners often thought highly of their abilities.
13 .Which aspect of the research is paragraph 2 mainly about
A .The purpose. B .The process. C .The subjects. D .The findings.
14 .Why do the users often overestimate their abilities
A .LLMs’ aid improves users’ task performance.
B .Users often skip the process of critical thinking.
C .AI tools contribute to users’ metacognitive accuracy.
D .The gap between high-and low-skill AI users is bridged.
15 .What will be probably talked about in the following paragraph
A .Regulations for narrowing AI users’ skill gap.
B .Guidelines for sourcing information reliably.
C .Methods for preventing users’ cognitive decline.
D .Tips for improving the subjects’ performance.

On a chilly winter morning, 18-year-old Jake stood at the bus stop, shivering
slightly as he waited for the school bus. Beside him, an elderly woman named Mrs. Jenkins was also waiting. Jake noticed that she was struggling to hold onto her cane with one hand and carry a large bag of groceries with the other. The wind was
blowing hard, and Mrs. Jenkins looked unsteady on her feet. Without hesitation, Jake stepped forward and offered to help carry her bag.
As they talked during the short wait, Jake learned that Mrs. Jenkins lived alone in a small apartment a few blocks away. Her children lived in different cities, and she rarely saw them. She spent most of her days doing housework and watching TV, with few people to talk to. Jake felt a pang of sadness. When they reached Mrs. Jenkins’
stop, he helped her get off the bus and walked her home.
Back at school, Jake shared his experience with his English teacher, Ms. Brown, and his classmates during a discussion about community service. “Mrs. Jenkins is just one of many elderly people who are lonely and in need of help in our community,”
Jake said earnestly. “But what can we, as high-school students, actually do Just visiting them occasionally doesn’t seem like a long-term solution.”
Ms. Brown encouraged the class to think creatively. “There must be ways we
can make a real difference in their lives, not just a temporary one,” she said. One of Jake’s classmates, Sarah, suggested, “Maybe we could start some kind of activity that combines our skills with their needs ” Another classmate, Tom, added, “But how do we make sure it’s something they really want and that we can keep doing ”
As the bell rang for the next class, the students left the classroom still deep in
thought. Jake couldn’t stop thinking about Mrs. Jenkins and the other lonely seniors in
the community. That night, as he sat at his desk doing homework, an idea slowly
began to form in his mind. He knew it would require a lot of effort and cooperation, but he was determined to turn it into a reality.

13 .主旨大意题。根据第二段“In the study, scientists gave 500 subjects logical reasoning tasks, with half allowed to use ChatGPT. Both groups were later quizzed on both their AI literacy and
how well they thought they performed, and promised extra rewards if they assessed their own
(
)
根据第四段“The study owed this to the fact that large language models (LLMs help everyone perform better to some degree.(该研究将此归因于大型语言模型(LLMs)在某种程度上帮助每个人都表现得更好)”可知,用户经常高估自己的能力是因为大型语言模型的帮助提高了用户在任务中的表现。故选 A 项。
15 .推理判断题。根据最后一段“Firstly, metacognitive accuracy overall might suffer. Without reflecting on results, error checking or deeper reasoning, we risk weakening our ability to source information reliably, the scientists said in the study. What’s more, the flattening of the
Dunning-Kruger Effect will mean we’ll all continue to overestimate our abilities while using AI,
with the more AI-literate among us doing so even more — leading to an increased climate of
miscalculated decision-making and a drop in their skills.(首先,整体的元认知准确性可能会受到影响。

Campus Responsibility Field
Last week, our school launched the “Campus Responsibility Field” activity, aiming to beautify our campus and foster a stronger sense of responsibility. My classmates and I were assigned a specific green area to care for.
Each of us worked together with the instructions of the gardening staff. Our tasks included weeding, watering the plants, and pruning overgrown branches. It was teamwork that made the
effort both efficient and enjoyable during this hands-on experience.
This activity was truly meaningful to me. Not only did it make our campus more beautiful, but it also taught me the value of dedication and cooperation.
47 .范文
The next day at school, Jake gathered his friends and presented his plan: creating a
“Youth-Elderly Skill-sharing Program”. He proposed that students could teach the elderly how to use smartphones, shop online and keep in touch with their families remotely. In return, the elderly could share their life experience, traditional skills and interesting stories with the young. Everyone present was deeply impressed and willing to take part. They divided themselves into several small groups, discussing detailed arrangements such as time, places and activities. With Ms. Brown’s
support, they soon got in touch with the local community to put the plan into action.
As the weeks passed, the program became an integral part of both the students’ and the
elderly’s lives. The elderly learned practical digital skills happily and no longer felt cut off from
the modern world, The students, meanwhile, gained wisdom, patience and a strong sense of
responsibility. What had started as a simple act of kindness turned into a warm, lasting bond
between generations. Both sides learned that true care lies in long-term company and mutual
growth, which made the whole community full of warmth and positive energy.
