阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
You probably know who Marie Curie was, but you may not have heard of Rachel Carson. Of the
outstanding ladies listed below, who do you think was the most important woman of the past 100 years
Jane Addams (1860-1935)
Anyone who has ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank. Addams helped
the poor and worked for peace. She encouraged a sense of community by creating shelters and promoting
education and services for people in need. In 1931, Addams became the first American woman to win the
Nobel Peace Prize.
Rachel Carson (1907-1964)
If it weren't for Rachel Carson, the environmental movement might not exist today. Her popular
book Silent Spring raised awareness of the dangers of pollution and the harmful effects of chemicals on
humans and on the world's lakes and oceans.
Sandra Day O'Connor (1930-present)
When Sandra Day O'Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School, in 1952, she could
not find work at a law firm because she was a woman. She became an Arizona state senator and in 1981,
the first woman to join the US Supreme Court. O'Connor gave the deciding vote in many important cases
during her 24 years on the top court.
Rosa Parks (1913-2005)
On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks would not give up her seat on a bus
to a white passenger. The simple act put Parks in prison. But it also caused the Montgomery bus boycott.
It lasted for more than a year, and started the civil-rights movement. "The only tired I was, was tired of
giving in." said Parks.

A British friend told me he couldn't understand why Chinese people love eating sunflower seeds as a
snack so much. "I've met a lot of older Chinese and many have a crack in their front teeth. I believe that's
from cracking the seeds," he said.
I had never noticed the habit, but once he mentioned it, I suddenly became more aware. I realised
that whenever I'm watching TV or typing a report, I always start mindlessly cracking sunflower seeds. My
friend doesn't like sunflower seeds, and, to him, it seems unnecessary to work so much just to get one
small seed.
When we were young, the whole family would usually get together for the Chinese New Year. Then,
we all lived close to one another, usually in a small city, and sometimes even neighbours would go
door-to-door on the Chinese New Year's Eve to check out what every family was making.
I remember my parents would be in the kitchen cooking. Out in the living room, a large table would
already be laid out, complete with fancy tablecloth, ready-made dumpling filling, and dishes full of candy,
fruit and sunflower seeds. Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later, while others were
for neighbours and children to eat before the evening feast. I must have learnt how to crack sunflower
seeds back then.
I don't think it's right to criticise one's choice in food or eating habits, no matter how strange they
may seem.
It's not only in China. When I went abroad, I found people had all sorts of strange habits when it
came to food. In Denmark, they put salted red fish on bread and eat it for dinner, no matter how much it
ruins your breath. They think it's delicious, and it's connected to their certain culture. I think it's a
wonderful tradition.
4.Why can the British friend not understand when he found Chinese love eating sunflower seeds
A. The seeds are too hard to crack.
B. He thinks they are harmful to teeth.
C. He doesn't think the seeds are worth eating.
D. He doesn't think the seeds are good.
5.What does the author prove by mentioning the Chinese New Year
试卷第 1页,共 3页
A. The families get together for it.
B. Children can eat delicious food on that day.
C. The traditions of celebrating it disappear.
D. Eating sunflower seeds is related to it.
6.What's the author's attitude to Denmark's way of eating bread
A. Uncaring. B. Negative. C. Understandable. D. Doubtful.
7.What idea does the author want to express in this passage
A. Eating habits come from a certain culture.
B. It is good to form healthy eating habits.
C. Changing your eating habits will change your life.
D. One kind of food doesn't necessarily suit everyone.
C
In the animal world, speed is king. Fast animals have a leg up in outrunning other animals, which
puts them high on the food chain. It would seem that all animals would go for speed, but then there’s the
sloth (树懒). While a lion can go from 0 to 60 miles an hour in only five seconds, it takes a sloth all day to
cover no more than 50 meters.
Sloths live entirely in trees on a diet of leaves. And for this, they are extremely rare. While most of
the land world is covered in trees, there are very few vertebrates (脊椎动物) that call the tree home. The
aim of a 2016 study, says Jonathan Pauli, a University of Alabama professor of forest and wildlife
ecology, was to help uncover why sloths are indeed so unique. “Among vertebrates, this is the rarest of
lifestyles”, says Pauli. “When you picture animals that live off plant leaves, they are almost all big-things
like deer. What’s super interesting about sloths is that they can’t be big.”
For their research, Pauli and his Wisconsin team studied wild sloths at a field site. When the
researchers measured the energy use of sloths, they found a wildly low burning of as little as 110 calories
of energy a day. And for this, they take the cake: it is the lowest measured energetic output for any
mammal (哺乳动物).
“The measurement was intended to find out what it cost sloths to live over a day,”says Pauli, who
adds that a diet of little but leaves lacks nutritional value and the animal’s small size doesn’t allow for
overeating-so sloths need to find ways to make the most of their diets, which means using tiny amounts of
energy, dramatic control of body temperature and living at an extremely slow pace.
Their reward A wonderfully widespread ecological system to call their own, one slow inch at a
time.
8.Why is a lion mentioned in Paragraph 1
试卷第 1页,共 3页
A. To admire lions’ speed. B. To state sloths’ weakness.
C. To confirm lions’ lead position. D. To highlight sloths’ uniqueness.
9.What is the 2016 study mainly about
A. The lifestyle of sloths. B. The diet of vertebrates.
C. The species of rare animals. D. The energy use of creatures.
10.What does the underlined part “take the cake” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Break down. B. Keep on. C. Stand out. D. Grow up.
11.What can be inferred about sloths from Pauli’s words
A. Their slow pace is a balanced choice.
B. They are in face of possible extinction.
C. Their slow pace decides a tiny appetite.
D. They suffer a lot against natural enemies.
D
With the recent discussion about the health benefits of fish oil and other wellness plans, it can make
you feel less worried to know that one thing never changes: Exercise is good for your health. Any
movement, even walking, brings about a host of cardiovascular effects that can help you live longer, feel
better, and not run out of breath when chasing children or small animals.
The question of how much exercise is best, though, is open to discussion. The answer often
depends on your goals. For heart health, sessions four to five times weekly might be perfect. For mental
health As The Independent reports, scientists believe there's a pretty specific prescription: Exercising for
45 minutes three to five times a week.
Researchers at Yale University and the University of Oxford made the study. They examined 1.2
million subjects who filled out the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey at two-year intervals
between 2011 and 2015.
Subjects who didn't exercise at all had an average of three-and-a-half days per month when they
felt mentally unwell-stressed, depressed, or suffering from emotional problems-while those who exercised
regularly reported an average of just two days.
The study found that having three to five 45-minute sessions of exercise a week was best for
reducing the reported problems of feeling stressed or depressed. Exercising for longer periods-some
subjects reported more than 90 minutes in the gym-was connected with a drop-off in mental health
benefits. Subjects who spent three hours at a time exercising actually reported an increase in depressive
symptoms.
Researchers also found that the kind of exercise undertaken made a difference. While all kinds of
exercise helped, people who took part in team sports promoting social communication and gym classes

like cycling described greater self-satisfaction with mental health.
Because the study included self-reported outcomes and exercise wasn't monitored, it's possible that
the subjects could have misread the amount of exercise performed. The study, however, makes a
convincing case for a popular opinion: If exercise were a pill, doctors everywhere would be prescribing it.
12.The perfect amount of exercise for a person is usually decided by ______.
A. his exercise routine B. his physical condition
C. what sports he prefers D. what he expects to improve
13.What do the numbers in Paragraphs 4 and 5 show
A. The health benefits of exercise.
B. People's response to hard exercise.
C. How exercise influences one's mental health.
D. Why positive attitudes promote one's exercise.
14.Which of the following sports may bring people more pleasure
A. Tai chi. B. Volleyball. C. Climbing. D. Diving.
15.What may be the reason for the disadvantage of the study
A. Too few participants.
B. Its researchers' personal interests.
C. The subjects' personal judgments.
D. Its failure to consider doctors' suggestions.
第二节(共 5小题;每小题 2.5分,满分 12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Protecting our planet starts with daily actions. By making simple eco-friendly choices at home, like
saving water and using fewer chemicals, everyone can make a real difference. 16 Start today and make
caring for nature part of your routine.
Save water at home. It takes a lot of energy to bring water from rivers, groundwater, or whatever
your local water source is into your home. Water must be pumped (输送) to a treatment plant to clean it,
and then pumped into your neighborhood. Saving water reduces the stress this process puts on natural
bodies of water. To achieve this, you can use water-saving appliances, like a dishwasher and washing
machine. 17
Use fewer chemicals. Chemicals washed down the waste pipe can pollute the water supply.
Therefore, you can use other cleaning solutions, and try white vinegar and baking soda to clean your
kitchen and bathroom. You should also reconsider your personal body care items. Replace shampoos,
conditioners, and soaps with natural versions. Your body will thank you, too.
试卷第 1页,共 3页
Never dump harmful waste materials into the grass. Paint, motor oil, and other strong chemical
solutions should not be dumped (倒入) into the yard, because they’ll seep (渗漏) into the groundwater.
18 Check your local sanitation department’s website to find out how to handle harmful waste. You may
be instructed to take them to a waste site for proper treatment.
19 Changing your personal habits is a great first step. By saving water in an everyday way, you’
re doing your part and setting a good example for other people. But to truly make an impact, consider
taking your efforts a step further. 20 If there’s one, don’t miss it. And if you can’t find a group,
organize one yourself!
A.Do your bit to protect water.
B.Share your plan with others.
C.These items need to be handled properly.
D.You can join a waterway-cleanup group.
E.These small steps add up to a healthier environment for all.
F.Try growing native plants that naturally help deal with the problem.
G.Remember not to leave the water running while you brush your teeth.

Last May, my 15-year-old son, Benjamin, came to my wife and me, his eyes filled with excitement.
He informed us that he was eager to attend an upcoming concert of the world-famous rapper Kendrick
Lamar. As parents, our first thought was for his safety. So, we gently but firmly told him that he was too
young to go to a concert in Toronto all by himself. However, Benjamin was incredibly persistent and
refused to accept our denial.
A few weeks later, I found myself in Ottawa, enjoying a warm and cozy time with my mother and
her sister, aunt Martha. As we sat around the fireplace, sipping on our cups of tea, I couldn’t help but pour
out my feelings about the situation I was in. “Here I am, a man in his fifties, going to a rap concert just for
my son,” I exclaimed. I couldn’t help thinking, wasn’t it much easier to be a parent before social media
platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat emerged In response, they shared a story from the past.
In the summer of 1964, 11-year-old Martha, with her bright eyes full of longing, begged her
61-year-old father, Cuthbert, to take her and her friend to a Beatles concert in Montreal. Cuthbert, being a
loving father, unwillingly agreed and drove them all the way from Ottawa. When the Beatles finally took
the stage, the crowd went wild with enthusiasm. Cuthbert was initially caught off guard (措手不及) by the
deafening screams and the wild energy. But as the band started singing “Can’t Buy Me Love”, he began
to feel a strange sense of connection. His foot unconsciously started tapping to the rhythm. And by the
time McCartney, a member of the Beatles, belted out (大声唱出 ) “Long Tall Sally”, Cuthbert had
completely forgotten his image as a respected lawyer.
If Cuthbert could attend a Beatles concert without embarrassing his daughter, why couldn’t I do
something similar for my son

One possible version:
I decided to accompany Benjamin to the Kendrick Lamar concert. I prepared myself
mentally, expecting a night filled with loud, unfamiliar music and a sea of energetic, young fans.
When the day arrived, Benjamin was brimming with excitement, and I tried to match his
enthusiasm. As we made our way to the concert venue, I couldn’t help but feel a bit out of place. I
reminded myself that this was for my son, and I was determined to make it a memorable
experience for both of us.
The truth is that the concert was great. Kendrick Lamar took the stage, and the crowd
roared with excitement. I found the atmosphere pulling me in. Lamar’s powerful lyrics and
dynamic performance were captivating. I started to relax and even began to appreciate the music.
As the night went on, I realized that being there with my son, sharing this experience, was far
more important than any concerns I had about fitting in. It was a moment that would strengthen
our bond, and I was grateful for the opportunity to create this memory with him.

I decided to accompany Benjamin to the Kendrick Lamar concert. I prepared myself
mentally, expecting a night filled with loud, unfamiliar music and a sea of energetic, young fans.

enthusiasm. As we made our way to the concert venue, I couldn’t help but feel a bit out of place. I
reminded myself that this was for my son, and I was determined to make it a memorable
experience for both of us.

roared with excitement. I found the atmosphere pulling me in. Lamar’s powerful lyrics and

our bond, and I was grateful for the opportunity to create this memory with him.
