That year, I was a Grade 8 student. Falling off the tree hurt me in the head. And it was difficult for me to get back to normal life. I had to leave school and learn everything, walking, talking, and maths.
To help me, Mrs. Pillar volunteered to come to the hospital and later to my house once a week. We began with simple maths skills. As time passed, I made progress.
I remember very vividly how she came to my home on Sundays, sat with me at the kitchen table and threw different coins (硬币) on the table. She asked me to show her 38 cents, 17 cents, 63 cents. It was hard, but she also made it fun.
After a year and a half, I had progressed a lot, both in body and mind, to return to school. Seven years later, I graduated from the University of Texas at the top of my class.
As years went by, I always kept in touch with Ms. Pillar. Unluckily, one day my parents told me that Mrs. Pillar had been in hospital.
Now it was my turn to help her. Mrs. Pillar lay in bed, unable to speak or know anybody around. I got some coins, dropped them on her bed, and asked her to show me 12 cents. One day Mrs. Pillar smiled happily as I began working with her—just as she had worked with me years before. She made progress every day and was finally out of hospital.
One day, I called to wish her a Happy New Year. She spoke into the phone excitedly, “Happy New Year to you and your family, Michael. Thank you for everything you did for me.” I quickly said, “Thank you for everything you did for me.”

Do you ever wonder how smart your pet dog is, especially when it comes to remembering things A new study gives us some interesting answers. Dogs are not just loyal and good at running — they are clever animals with amazing memories!
Scientists wanted to know how well dogs can remember things, so they did an experiment with 40 friendly pet dogs. These dogs were of different ages, from lively puppies to gentle old dogs, and they all loved delicious treats.
In the experiment, the scientists put five boxes of the same size in a quiet room. Three boxes were full of the dogs’ favorite snacks, and the other two were empty. Then the scientists let the dogs into the room to eat. After they finished eating, the scientists took them out. Twenty minutes later, the scientists changed all the boxes to clean, empty ones. Then the dogs went back to the room to look for food. What happened next The dogs spent much more time around the boxes that had food before! They sniffed the boxes with their noses and scratched them with their paws.
This tells us dogs can remember “what” and “where” very well. They seem to have good short-term memories. Another study in 2019, however, showed something different. Scientists tested dogs’ ability to find hidden toys. Most of the dogs couldn’t find them after 40 seconds.
The study opens the door to new research on how long dogs’ memories can be. Professor Miller from Harvard University said, “We will keep studying how long dogs’ memories last and if they remember many small things in life like humans do.”
28. What do we know about the dogs in the experiment
① They were friendly. ② They were all puppies.
③ They were pet dogs. ④ They loved delicious food.
A. ①②③ B. ①③④ C. ②③④ D. ①②④
29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The reason why scientists studied dogs’ memories.
B. The dogs’ excellent senses of smell and touch.
C. The process of the dogs’ memory experiment.
D. The results of the dogs’ memory experiment.
30. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. The scientists’ plan. B. The dogs’ favorite food.
C. The experiment’s finding. D. The box with the most food.
31. What may Professor Miller think about dogs’ memories
A. Scientists already know a lot about them.
B. Scientists need to study more about them.
C. Dogs have the same memory ability as humans.
D. Dogs can remember things better than most animals.
D
Have you ever wondered what makes people live a long and healthy life What's the secret Is it expensive medicine, a big house, a high-paying job, or simply good living habits The latest World Health Organization report says that wealth is not the key to longevity. Longevity depends more on the healthy habits you keep rather than the luxury things you own. Money can buy fancy healthcare, but the health it brings is often not lasting.
The report also says real health comes from intangible things. One important thing is a positive mindset. People who stay optimistic and laugh often usually live longer. Doing things you love also makes you healthier. For example, reading a favorite book, growing flowers in the garden, or chatting with old friends will make you feel full of energy. Even a simple walk in the park can work wonders.
It’s not surprising that a balanced diet is another key to longevity. Fresh vegetables and fruits are important, and so is less sugar and salt. Eating three meals on time every day helps you keep a healthy body and makes you feel more energetic.
Exercise also affects longevity. If you don't take enough exercise, you will be weak and easy to get sick. Besides, inactivity affects your ability to stay focused and may slow down your metabolism. So if you want to live a long and healthy life, try to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day.
Now you know the theory. It’s time to put it all into practice.
32. How does the writer start the text
A. By telling a story. B. By giving examples.
C. By asking questions. D. By describing a problem.
33. What does the latest WHO report say about money
A. It plays an important role in keeping people healthy.
B. It is the best way to help people live longer.
C. It makes people feel full of energy.
D. It brings non-lasting health benefits.
34.Which of the following is the structure of the passage (① = Paragraph 1; ② = Paragraph 2)
A. B. C. D.
35. What is the writer’s main purpose of writing this text
A. To show what brings a long and healthy life.
B. To compare different types of healthy habits.
C. To offer advice on how to make more money.
D. To tell people why they need to eat healthy food.

Private (私人的) cars have brought about a new class of society, who drive to their offices from large, modern houses in the suburbs (郊区). “I enjoy the drive,” said a big company manager of the 30-minute-trip to his office in the center of Shanghai. “I know that driving cars costs more money than travelling by bus,” he said. “But this way, I feel more comfortable and it is much faster.”
