In history, great inventions have greatly changed how we live, work and communicate.
The wheel is one of the most important inventions in history. The oldest known wheel is from Mesopotamia, around 3500 B.C., but nobody knows who invented it. Early wheels were made of wood. The invention of the wheel is often seen as the starting point of human technological development.
Before the telephone, letters or the telegraph (电报) were used to communicate far away. The first telephone was invented by American Alexander Bell in 1876. It made the world smaller and let people communicate at once. With the arrival of the mobile phone in the 1980s, people could communicate more conveniently.
The light bulb's invention changed our world. It freed us from depending on natural light, so we could work well day and night. Many inventors helped develop this great technology in the 1800s. Thomas Edison, a famous American inventor who is seen as the main inventor of the light bulb, invented it in 1879.
The compass was invented by ancient Chinese people during the Song Dynasty, between the 11th and 12th centuries. Before it appeared, people often got lost at sea as they couldn't find directions. However, the compass helped them know which way was north, making sea travel much safer and helped people to discover new lands around the world.
