Yesterday afternoon, something unusual happened at Green Park. Around 4 p.m., dark clouds filled the sky and heavy rain began to fall. People who were enjoying their time in the park quickly ran to find shelter (躲避处). But a young boy did not move. He remained sitting alone at a stone chess table, completely lost in thought.
For the next few hours, the rain continued without stopping. The boy stayed in the same place, getting wetter and wetter. His clothes were totally wet, but he seemed not to notice. Many people walked by and saw him. Some stopped and watched from a distance, wondering what was wrong.
Mrs. Chen, a local woman who often takes walks in the park, became worried. “I first saw him when the rain started,” she said. “Two hours later, when I passed by again, he was still there. I went over and asked if he needed an umbrella or some help. He didn’t answer. He just kept watching the empty chessboard in front of him.” Another visitor was so concerned that he considered calling the police, thinking the boy might be lost.

International Seal (海豹) Day is on March 1st. It helps people learn about and protect seals. Today, let’s talk about Baikal seals. They are the only seals that live in fresh water all their lives. They live in Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest lake in Russia. How do they live well there
In winter, the lake becomes ice. To get into the water, Baikal seals use their long claws (爪) and strong flippers (鳍) to break the ice. They do this early in winter, before the ice gets too thick.
In summer, all the ice disappears. The seals can’t sleep on the water anymore. They go to the Ushkany Islands in the middle of the lake. These islands are far from bears and other dangerous animals, so the seals can sleep safely there.
Lake Baikal’s water is always cold — even in summer, it’s often below 10℃. Luckily, the seals have thick fat under their skin. This fat keeps them warm in cold water, and it also helps them float easily.
The lake is very deep, but the seals are great swimmers! Their muscles have a special protein (蛋白质). It stores oxygen (氧) for them, so they can stay underwater for up to four minutes and dive over 300 meters deep.
43.What is special about Baikal seals
A.They can live on the far islands. B.They can live without water for long.
C.They live in fresh water all their lives. D.They are the smallest seals in the world.

D.Because they need to make new homes.
45.How do Baikal seals live well in Lake Baikal Check and choose the right answer.
a. They break the ice before the ice gets too thick.
b. The thick fat helps them to keep warm in cold water.
c. A special protein in their muscle stores oxygen for them.
d. They live in the water far from dangerous animals in summer.
A.acd. B.abc. C.bcd. D.abd.

A.To show how deep Lake Baikal is. B.To tell readers how Baikal seals live.
C.To ask people to celebrate Seal Day. D.To teach people how to protect seals.

A.①/②③④/⑤ B.①/②③/④⑤ C.①②③/④⑤ D.①/②③④⑤
Fast fashion has changed the way we dress. Clothes are cheaper and easier to buy than ever before. But there is a hidden price: the environment. Every year, about 92 million tons of clothing are thrown away. That is like a garbage truck full of clothes being thrown away every second. Imagine all those shirts, pants, and dresses ending up in landfills (垃圾填埋场)!
To solve this problem, a group of Austrian researchers led by Thomas Harter has a smart idea: turn old clothes into stronger packaging paper. Instead of letting clothes break down naturally in landfills, they give them a second life.
The process starts with cutting the clothes into tiny pieces. These pieces are put in a water-based solution (溶液), and then they go through a special machine. This step separates the cotton fibers (纤维). After that, the fibers are mixed with recycled paper pulp (纸浆).
Here’s the cool part: textile (纺织品) fibers are much longer than paper fibers. Because of this, they make the final paper stronger. The new paper looks a bit brown and has small marks of color from the old clothes. But it works well for packaging and can be recycled just like normal paper.
The project is still new, but the team hopes to improve it by using some safe chemicals. This would make the process faster, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly. When the new method is ready, it could help reduce textile waste around the world. One more good thing The new paper is stronger, so it can be used longer. This means less paper will be thrown away when making packaging.
48.How does the writer lead into the topic of the passage
A.By listing the steps to recycle old clothes.
B.By setting a scene about the environment.
C.By asking a question about the environment.
D.By telling a story about Austrian researchers.
49.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A.The way to cut the clothes into tiny pieces.
B.The environmental advantages the project can bring.
C.The differences between textile fibers and paper fibers.
D.The process of turning old clothes into packaging paper.
50.What does the underlined word it in Paragraph 4 refer to
A.The old clothes. B.The new paper.
C.The common paper. D.The colorful spot.
51.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.People will stop buying fast fashion clothes soon.
B.The new paper cannot be recycled like common paper.
C.The project has been widely used all over the world now.
D.Safe chemicals will help the project become better and greener.
52.What’s the theme of the passage
A.Fashion. B.Culture. C.Travel. D.Environment.

What Is a Deepfake (深度伪造) , and How Can You Tell
Imagine watching a video of a famous singer saying something rude, or seeing a photo of your friend doing something strange online. Everything seems real. 53
Today, deepfakes are becoming more common. A deepfake is a photo, video, or sound that is created using artificial intelligence (AI) to make it look or sound natural. 54 This makes it difficult for people to tell whether what they see or hear is true.
Some people use deepfakes only for fun, such as making movies or cartoons more interesting. 55 They may spread wrong information, or cheat people into sending money.
Experts say everyone needs to learn how to tell if they are true. 56 If a person’s eyes do not blink (眨眼) naturally, the lighting looks strange, or the movements do not match the words, the video may not be real.
When you see something online that feels wrong, do not share it right away. Instead, check the information carefully and talk to a trusted adult or teacher. 57 As Internet safety experts often remind us, being careful and curious is the best way to protect ourselves.
A.There are several warning signs.
B.However, some people use it to do harm.
C.You may believe it without thinking twice.
D.Many people share such videos just for fun.
E.Making this kind of video is very difficult.
F.For example, AI can change a person’s face or voice.
G.This habit can stop wrong information from spreading.

Middle School Life in My Eyes
If I have to choose one word to describe my middle school life, it must be “hard-working”. It is a precious period when I study for my dreams with efforts and leave deep marks on my life.
In Grade Eight, my English was poor and I even wanted to give up. Encouraged by my teacher, I worked hard: getting up early to recite words and spending evenings doing exercises. After half a year, my score improved greatly and I won a school English prize.
From this, I learned “no pain, no gain”. Hard work not only brings progress but also shapes my persistence. This hard-working journey is my most unforgettable memory, encouraging me to move forward forever.
