The Coolest State Parks
Get ready to discover some of the coolest state parks you’ve never heard of — you won’t want to miss this!
Makoshika State Park, Montana
Makoshika State Park is the state’s largest park, famous for striking rock formations. The park covers over 11,000 acres of beautiful weathered cliffs, deep canyons and unique sandstone features. You’ll also find impressive dinosaur fossils.
Steptoe Butte State Park, Washington

There is a road you can drive to the top. Right now, the park is closed because the road is damaged and needs repairs. It’s a special place for both its unique geology and its importance to native American history.
Goblin Valley State Park, Utah
Goblin Valley State Park in Utah features thousands of strange, mushroom-shaped sandstone formations, sculpted by wind and water over millions of years into a maze-like, otherworldly landscape. Visitors can wander freely among these “goblins” and explore the nearby narrow canyon, Goblin’s Lair. As an official International Dark Sky Park, it also offers exceptionally clear, breathtaking views of the stars at night.
Natural Bridge State Park, Virginia
Natural Bridge State Park is home to an amazing, 215-foot tall limestone arch (石灰岩拱门) that’s been a natural wonder for centuries. Carved out by Cedar Creek, this huge stone bridge was actually once owned by Thomas Jefferson. The park offers scenic hiking paths, like the Cedar Creek Trail, which takes you right under the bridge and past caves, a waterfall and a replica (复制品) of a native American village.

I spent many of these years wishing I were a brain in a vat (培养皿): brains in vats don’t get let down by their bodies. On account of the pains caused by Lyme disease and endometriosis, I’d find myself seeking out distraction on a screen, trying to forget I had a body at all.
One day, one of those distractions changed my life for good. I came across a video for Justin Peck’s ballet Year of the Rabbit. From that moment on, I fell in love with ballet. I longed to try dancing myself. Luckily for me, there was a dance studio right down the street from my apartment. On a day when I felt well enough, I gathered my courage and enrolled in a class. Sue, the studio owner and primary instructor, loved teaching the basics of ballet. She took extra care to point out when students did something well, and took equal joy in the unique ways they made mistakes.
The more time I spent in Sue’s studio, the more I began to relate to my body in a new way. Learning to dance was a transformation of mind as much of body. After frustrating me for so long, my body even began to be a source of accomplishment and pride. It made me realize that even my sick body had much more potential than I’d realized.
Being human means being vulnerable — getting sick and hurt, and getting older too. But those same bodies that cause us grief also make it possible to live full and meaningful lives. Ballet continually reminds me that having a body — and being human — is beautiful, even when it’s hard. And it’s much more fun than being a brain in a vat.
24.Why did the author wish to be “a brain in a vat” at the beginning
A.To escape her responsibilities.
B.To free herself from a sick body.
C.To focus entirely on intellectual life.
D.To abandon herself to virtual pleasure.
25.Which can best describe Sue’s teaching style
A.Attentive and supportive. B.Passionate but impatient.
C.Professional and traditional. D.Demanding but encouraging.
26.What does the underlined word “vulnerable” in the last paragraph mean
A.Ordinary. B.Sensitive. C.Delicate. D.Humble.
27.Which would be the best title for the text
A.Discovering fun in a ballet studio. B.Finding strength in my weak body.
C.Accepting myself by fighting illness. D.Embracing my body through ballet.
C
The next time you find yourself in a car, driving along a winding road, why not turn on a cheerful song It might help you recover from car sickness. A team of researchers led by neuroscientist Yilun Li at China’s Henan Institute of Science and Technology has found music may be a surprisingly effective way to reduce travel-related discomfort and dizziness.
In the experiments, 30 volunteers used a machine that imitated (模仿) car driving, in which they were made to feel carsick while wearing an electroencephalograph (EEG) cap. This allowed researchers to “read” the volunteers’ brain activity in real time, as it changed from a stable state to one of carsickness, and gradually back again. Volunteers were divided into six groups. Four groups listened to a minute of music after the sick-making drive; one group listened to no music after the drive, and instead spend one minute meditating (冥想), that is, staying calm and focusing on their breathing; and one ended the drive right before volunteers were expected to feel discomfort.
The researchers found that joyful music reduced symptoms of carsickness by 14% compared to the group that meditated. Soft music was the next best type. It reduced symptoms by 13.4% compared to the meditation controls. It’s difficult to evaluate how significant these changes are, as the current experiments were grounded in a small group of people with limited statistical power. Even so, the results have found music can be powerful — changing the way we feel, for better or worse.
Previous studies have also shown that a favorite music can reduce symptoms of visually caused carsickness or “cybersickness” from virtual reality devices. But while some research suggests that sad music can improve mood and make us feel good, it’s possible that in some situations, it can have the opposite effect. Sad music may worsen discomfort through emotional connection, the authors suggest. In contrast, cheerful or relaxing music may help volunteers maintain a good physical state, thus improving their comfort.
28.What is the author’s purpose in writing the first paragraph
A.To give practical advice to drivers. B.To introduce a research discovery.
C.To explain a new scientific theory. D.To question an old common belief.
29.How did the researchers measure the volunteers’ brain activity
A.By testing in a moving car. B.By playing different songs.
C.By observing their behavior. D.By using a special device.
30.What is one disadvantage of the experiments
A.Random volunteer subjects. B.Limited music types.
C.Short experiment time. D.Small sample size.
31.What is implied about music’s effect on motion sickness
A.Its effect relies on personal taste in music.
B.Its emotional types define its final effect.
C.It may produce unintended negative results.
D.It primarily addresses physical symptoms.
D
Scientists have made a breakthrough in helping those suffering from visual disorders by placing tiny electronic chips into the back of their eyes. The chips are only 2mm wide, about as thick as a grain of rice.
A trial involved 38 patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) (黄斑变性), a condition mostly affecting the elderly and making central vision unclear. Around 600,000 people in the UK have AMD.The trial was conducted at 17 hospitals in five European countries, including the UK. The patients had “dry AMD”, which damages light-detecting cells at the back of the eye. These cells transform light into electrical signals for the brain. When these cells are damaged or destroyed, they cause poor vision, and there is currently no cure for this condition.
The tiny “bionic” chips can give people back some sight. Bionic means a man-made object that acts as a body part. The patients get a pair of glasses with a built-in video camera and a small pocket-sized black box that processes the data. When wearing the glasses, the patient looks at an object, for instance, a book. The camera captures the image, sends data to the black box for clarification, and the processed information is then delivered to the chip under the retina (视网膜). The wireless chip sends signals (just like TV remotes do) to the optic nerve (视觉神经), which communicates with the brain. However, patients need time to train their brains to interpret the images.
Patients can only see in black and white, but it has significantly improved the lives of those who were treated. Seventy-year-old Sheila Irvine was one of the patients who took part in the trial. She is registered as blind, but now is able to read books and do crosswords. “It is amazing,” she told the BBC. “I am one happy cookie now.”
Scientists are also excited. “Blind patients are actually able to have meaningful central vision restoration, which has never been done before,” said Mahi Muqit, an associate professor at University College London.
32.What can be inferred about the “breakthrough” mentioned in the first paragraph
A.It restores partial vision for a specific previously incurable condition.
B.It marks the first successful medical application of bionic technology.
C.It provides a complete and permanent cure for patients with AMD.
D.Its innovation lies in the extremely small size of the electronic chip.
33.What is the main problem caused by “dry AMD”
A.It prevents the eyes from producing tears.
B.It makes the patient’s glasses difficult to wear.
C.It causes the optic nerve to stop working completely.
D.It damages the light-sensitive cells at the back of the eye.
34.How does the bionic chip help patients regain sight
A.By delivering signals to the black box.
B.By capturing clear images for the eyes.
C.By changing light into electrical signals itself.
D.By sending processed signals to the optic nerve.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A.A New Cure Discovered for Dry AMD
B.A Breakthrough treatment for the Blind
C.A Bionic Chip for Partial Vision Restoration
D.A Wireless Chip for Instant AMD Sight Recovery

When research-based learning was introduced at my school, I saw it as a frightening task. 36 My teacher, Mr Lee, changed my view. He said, “True learning starts with a question from your own life.” His words encouraged me to look around with curiosity.
I began to notice small things. Why did I prefer studying in the library corner near the window What made group study sometimes effective and sometimes noisy After thinking carefully, I settled on a simple question: Does background music help or hold back homework efficiency This was my first lesson: Choose a question I truly want to answer. 37
Next, I needed a plan. I felt overwhelmed until I broke it down. I decided to experiment on myself for two weeks: one week with soft instrumental music, and one week in complete silence. 38 I also designed a short survey for my classmates. Making a clear, simple plan turns anxiety into action.
The real challenge came during the execution (执行). My self-observation was easy, but analyzing the results was confusing. After analysis, I found that the survey responses were mixed, and the results weren’t what I had expected. 39 Then, I remembered that research is about understanding, not just proving a point. So, I looked for patterns instead of a single answer. I prepared to learn from unexpected data, not just to confirm my guess.
40 I made two simple graphs about my focus and classmates’ music preferences. I saw music helped me with repetitive tasks but not with reading, and that preferences varied widely — showing no universal answer, only personal patterns. Presenting these findings taught me research is less about definitive truths and more about methodical exploration. It improved my ability to observe, plan, adapt, and communicate. Ultimately, the process itself is the real lesson. You can start your own research today by picking a small, curious question from daily life and following it step by step.
A.Finally, I turned to Mr Lee.
B.I almost thought my project was a failure.
C.My personal interest is the best motivation.
D.I tracked my focus time and task completion.
E.Later, Mr Lee suggested I picture my confusing data.
F.I had to give up the project I was doing at that moment.
G.The word “research” itself sounded too serious and distant.

第二节 (满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Leo was a quiet student at Pinewood High with a deep love for his school. He preferred to keep away from the laughter and games of his classmates; the quiet music room was his favorite place. His excellent violin talent had earned him a scholarship, making him focus more on music and spend little time with lively peers. Most days, he devoted himself in musical notes, finding comfort in the peace of music and rarely interacting with members of other clubs.
When autumn arrived, a new rule for the annual talent show was announced: each performance must be a group work involving at least three students from different clubs, themed “One Stage We Create”. The winning work would be given prize money. His music teacher, Mr. Davies, encouraged him to form a team, filling Leo with a mix of unease and excitement. “You have a gift, Leo,” Mr. Davies said gently, “but a gift is meant to be shared. Find classmates from the art or literature club who can connect with your music.” Leo hoped to win, as he wanted to use the prize money to make his beloved school more beautiful.
Mr. Davies’ words stayed in his mind. Leo was not used to face-to-face invitations, as he seldom spoke to classmates outside of class. School posters with “TOGETHER WE CREATE” were constant reminders of the task ahead. Determined to step out of his music world and work with others to win the prize, he decided to post a notice online to find teammates—a choice that made him feel much more at ease.
That night, he took a deep breath and posted on the school website: “Looking for 2 teammates from different clubs for the talent show. I play the violin and wish to combine music with art or literature. Theme: One Stage We Create”. He hesitated for a moment before clicking “send”.

66.【答案】Dear Peter,
I’m writing to express my choice for the campus cultural festival. After careful consideration, I prefer the Traditional Chinese Art Workshop to the International Food Fair.
As foreign students, most of us are eager to learn about Chinese culture but have few chances to experience it closely. The workshop, such as paper-cutting or calligraphy, can let us get hands-on experience and feel the charm of traditional Chinese art directly.
It’s also a good way to promote cultural exchange between us. I believe it will be more meaningful and popular among students.

67.【答案】The next afternoon, right after his violin practice, he checked the website eagerly. His heart raced as he saw two replies. One was from Lila, an art club member who wanted to paint live on stage, inspired by music. The other was from Tom, a literature club student who wrote poems about the school’s hidden corners. Both mentioned wanting to use the prize to add more green spaces to the campus, just like Leo. They met in the music room that evening, and as Leo played a soft melody, Lila sketched a draft of a sunlit school garden while Tom read a poem about growth and connection. For the first time, Leo felt part of something bigger than his violin.
When the big day came, Leo stood confidently on stage with his teammates. As his violin strings began to hum, Lila’s brush danced across a large canvas, painting the school’s courtyard blooming with flowers. Tom’s voice rose, reciting his poem about how every student’s small light makes the school warm. The audience was spellbound; when the last note faded, cheers filled the hall. They won first place, and later, their prize money turned the courtyard into a lush garden with benches and a small poetry wall. Leo smiled as he watched classmates laugh among the flowers, knowing he’d not only beautified his school but also found kindred spirits.
