In Italy, when people find themselves in an unlucky situation, they use the “sign of the horns (角)” to avoid any further bad luck. This gesture(手势) is usually made with the little and index fingers pointing downward. However, you must be careful with the direction. When the gesture is made with the “horns” pointing upward, the meaning becomes completely different. It can be very rude and upsetting.
The Danish have a very old tradition of breaking dishes at the doorsteps of family, friends, and neighbors on New Year's Eve. In the days before December 31st, trucks full of old dishes pull into towns. People buy them and save them for the celebration. As the clock strikes((时钟)敲;报时) midnight, people run around hurling (用力掷) dishes at someone's front door. But today, as throwing whole plates can be dangerous and leave quite a mess, more people choose to pre-break their plates and put the pieces at the doorsteps of family, friends, and neighbors. The bigger the pile(堆;叠) you end up with, the more luck you will have in the upcoming year!
It's so annoying(烦人的) when a bird drops a“surprise” on you while you're out walking. However, in many parts of the world, people consider it a sign of good luck! For example, Russians believe that a single droplet (滴) means money is on the way. And in Turkish culture, getting hit by bird droppings is also thought to bring luck. They believe it means something positive is about to happen. These beliefs show how a nuisance can transform((使)改变; (使)转换) into a positive symbol across different regions and traditions. So next time a bird chooses you maybe it's not so bad after all! Of course, there are more fun customs in the world. Let's explore them together to improve our cultural knowledge.
( )36. Why should people avoid pointing the “horns” upward in Italy
A. It causes physical harm to others.
B. It means something bad to others.

C. Old customs are always changed for safety.
( )40. What is the author’s attitude toward these good-luck traditions
A. They are interesting cultural facts.
B. They are easy to be misunderstood.
C. They are well-known to everyone.
B
Everyone knows that forests help fight climate change. However, a recent scientific report shows that the world lost 300,000 square kilometers of forests in 2024. That’s an area about the size of Italy.
According to the report, for the first time ever, fires were the biggest cause of forest loss. ▲ This country has the largest area of rainforest in the world. Last year, it suffered from a long period of dry weather. Wildfires broke out and spread. As a result, about 25,000 square kilometers of the primary rainforest disappeared in the country. This meant fires caused 66% of its forest loss.
The second biggest cause of the world’s forest loss was clearing land for farming. As people need more farmland, they keep cutting down forests every year. In 2024, the area of forest cleared for farming increased by 14% worldwide. The situation was more severe in developing countries. For example, Bolivia lost 2.5 times as much forest in 2024 as it did the year before.
Without doubt, something must be done. Experts call on governments, businesses and people to work together before it is too late. It seems that China has set a good example. Thanks to cooperation at many levels, China had the biggest increase in forest area among all countries in 2024. That year alone, newly-planted trees in China covered an area of nearly 45,000 square kilometers, according to a news report. If more countries start to take action like China, the earth will become a greener planet.
( )41. The size of Italy is mentioned in paragraph 1 to show _____.
A. why we need forests B. where a disaster spread C. how terrible forest loss was
( )42. Which of the following can be put in “ ▲ ” in paragraph 2

( )44. What was the reason for the growth of China’s forest area in 2024
A. Enough land. B. Nice weather. C. Good teamwork.
( )45. What is the best title for the passage
A. Forest Loss Worried the World
B. Rainforest Became Larger
C. Forest Fires Caused Pollution

Have you wondered what it would be like to live in space The following will explain astronauts' daily life to you. Eating in space Imagine going camping for more than a week with some friends. You would make sure you have plenty of foods and store them properly. At the end of your camping trip, you would deal with your rubbish properly before the ride home. Astronauts almost do the same thing when they go to space. Preparation varies with the food type. Some foods can be eaten in their natural forms, such as chocolate cakes and fruits. Other foods require adding water, such as cheese. Of course, an oven is provided at the space station to heat the food. But there are no fridges, so space food must be stored properly.
Sleeping in space After a long day at work, nothing is better than a good night's sleep! Just like on the earth, in space astronauts go to bed at a certain time, then get up and prepare for work again. When going to sleep, they have to attach themselves, so they don't float around or hit their bodies against something. They usually use sleeping bags located in small crew cabins(乘员舱). Each crew cabin is just big enough for one person. Generally, astronauts have an eight-hour sleep each day when they finish their task.
Doing sports in space Exercise is an important part of every astronaut's daily life to prevent muscle loss (肌肉萎缩).On average, astronauts exercise two hours every day. Lifting 200 pounds on the earth may be a lot of work. But lifting that same object in space would be much easier. That means exercise equipment needs to be specially designed, so astronauts can receive the exercise needed. Living in space is not just all work and no play. Astronauts have fun, too. They like to look out the window and play with their food. Fun plays an important role in the quality of their life.
( )46. The author starts to explain eating in space by _______.
A. telling a story B. asking a question C. giving an example
( )47. It can be learned from paragraph 3 that _______.
A. astronauts use fridges to store foods
B. astronauts can eat cakes in their natural form
C. astronauts don’t add water to cheese
( )48. What does the underlined word “attach” mean
A. Tie. B. Hide. C. Catch.
( )49. It is much easier for people ______ in space than on the earth.
A. to fall asleep B. to lift heavy things C. to prevent muscle loss
( )50. In which part of a newspaper can we read the passage
A. CULTURE B. SOCIETY C. SCIENCE

Back from summer vacation, students at a primary school in Chengdu, Sichuan Province were excited to find that their desks and chairs could be turned into recliners (可调式躺椅) for post-lunch naps.
In many parts of China, taking a nap after lunch is a common practice for students to get back their strength and energy. However, with limited(有限的) space, most students could only take a nap by resting their heads on their desks, which is bad for their health.
The introduction of nap-friendly furniture has solved this problem. With the backrests adjusted(调节) to an angle(角度;角) of over 150 degrees, students can lie down comfortably. “I can take a better nap and I feel more energetic for afternoon classes, said Wang Yunmu, a third-grader at the primary school in Chengdu.
The focus on better midday naps shows the understanding that good rest can improve
students' health and learning. Education expert Chen Qianlin said, “A proper lying-down nap after morning classes helps students study better in the afternoon and keeps them positive.”"
Now, more schools are using this kind of furniture. For example, in Fenghua district, Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, four primary schools received more than 2,ooo sets of napping desks in 2024. Ganzhou in Jiangxi Province has provided 133 schools with over 2o,ooo sets of “nap-friendly”desks.
As the use of such furniture increases, China has set new standards to ensure safety and comfort. “These standards are important for keeping poor-quality products out of schools,” said Xiong Bingqi, an education researcher.
He also pointed out that limited classroom space is the main challenge for wider use of nap-friendly furniture, as a standard classroom can only hold 25 sets at most. “Future efforts should focus on small-class teaching, paving the way for both personalized(个性化的) education and comfortable naps,” Xiong added.
( )51. How did the students feel about their new desks and chairs
A. Pleased. B. Unsure. C. Disappointed.
( )52. What does the underlined part “this problem” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Classrooms are too crowded.
B. Students couldn’t nap healthily.
C. Schools have limited lunch time.
( )53. Why has China set new standards for the furniture
A. To design more different styles.
B. To test how long it can be used.
C. To make sure it is safe and works well.
( )54. What is the biggest problem with using more nap-friendly furniture
A. Many classrooms are not big enough.
B. The cost of the furniture is too high.
C. There are no national rules for the furniture.
( )55. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this article
A. To explain why napping is important.
B. To report a change and its effects in schools.
C. To advertise a new brand of school furniture.

The Giant’s Causeway, located in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. With its special natural landscape and beautiful coastal views, it attracts millions of visitors every year.
The Causeway is made up of around 40,000 basalt columns (玄武岩柱). Most of them are six-sided, but some have four, five, seven, or even eight sides. And the tallest columns can reach up to 12 meters high.
The name “Giant’s Causeway” comes from an old Irish legend. The story says that a giant named Finn McCool built the causeway to reach Scotland and confront another giant. Now, at the Visitor Centre, visitors can still find the Giant’s Boot, a large stone shaped like a boot, which is said to be left by Finn McCool during the fight.
In fact, the formation of these basalt columns is a natural process, not the work of a giant. Around 50 to 60 million years ago, lots of volcanic (火山的) activity caused lava (熔岩) to flow out. When the lava met seawater, it cooled rapidly, resulting in the columns we see today.
Actually, the Giant’s Causeway isn’t just about rocks — it’s also a home to kinds of wildlife. The rocky shores and cliffs provide nesting places for seabirds. The waters around it are full of marine (海洋的) life, including dolphins and so on.
The Giant’s Causeway is easy to reach. Along the way, visitors can get up close to the rock columns and enjoy beautiful views of the coastline. Since the rocks can be slippery (滑的), it’s necessary to wear non-slip shoes. Also, the weather here can change quickly, so wearing more clothes is a good idea. To avoid the crowds, it’s a good idea to visit it early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Dear teachers and fellow students,
AI is like a “golden key” that brings both chances and problems for our learning. I’d like to share some of my thoughts on this growing trend. First, many of us may depend too much on AI. To solve this problem, we should manage our time wisely and think actively and critically. Don’t just rely on AI to get answers. Second, there is less communication with people. We can take part in various school activities, like group discussions and sports meets. By doing so, we can communicate more with our classmates. Also, some students may be addicted to AI-related entertainment, which is harmful to themselves. We need to set clear study goals and limit our time on such entertainment.
In conclusion, with the right attitude and proper solutions, we can make good use of AI and develop ourselves better.
Thank you!
