In our daily lives, we often focus on big events and achievements. However, it's the small acts of kindness that can truly make a difference in people's lives.
Last month, 14-year-old Lily noticed an elderly neighbor, Mr. Smith, struggling to carry groceries up the stairs. Without hesitation, she ran over to help him. Mr. Smith was so touched by her simple act. He said, “It's these small things that restore my faith in humanity. Lily's help made my day.”
Another example is from a local school. A group of students started the “Compliment (赞美) Corner” during lunchtime. Every day, they write kind words on colorful cards and share them with their classmates. One student, Tom, said, “I was having a really bad day, but then I received a card that said, ‘You have a beautiful smile.’ It made me feel so much better.”
Small acts of kindness not only bring joy to others but also to ourselves. When we do something nice for someone, our brain releases dopamine (多巴胺), a chemical that makes us feel happy.
Moreover, these small acts can create a chain reaction. When people experience kindness, they are more likely to _________it forward. For instance, after receiving help from Lily, Mr. Smith offered to help another neighbor fix a broken fence.
Whether it's helping someone carry something, giving a compliment, or just offering a smile, these small gestures can have a huge impact on the world around us.
What did Lily do to help Mr. Smith
A. She carried groceries for him. B. She fixed his broken fence.
C. She wrote a compliment card for him. D. She shared colorful cards with him.
Why did the students start the “Compliment Corner”
A. To get good grades. B. To make others feel happy. C. To have more friends. D. To win a competition.
What is the proper word in the sentence “they are more likely to ______ it forward”
A. pay B. post C. pass D. practice
C.
(Lucy's Story)
Lucy is a 14-year-old girl. She likes classical music, such as famous piano compositions (作品). She says the music makes her feel relaxed. But her best friend prefers rock music.
Everyone has different opinions. Your opinion is one of the things that make it different. It's OK to express your own opinions. It allows you to share yourself with others. No one likes to make friends with people who aren't honest with themselves. But you should be careful about how you express your opinions.
First, listen to other people carefully. Although you may be eager (热切的) to explain your side, listening to others' points of view first will help keep the conversation calm. You will also understand their sides.
Next, express your own opinions politely. Remember, you're not trying to start an argument. Don't express yourself too eagerly. Winning or losing is not the point. Don't try to force your friend to think like you.
Last but most importantly, show your friends that you value your friendship, even if you disagree about some things. This can prevent both of you from becoming too emotional (情绪激动的).
In Lucy's case, she could try this: “I know you really like rock music, but I'm afraid it's just not my cup of tea. I prefer classical music. I think if I could find a rock version (版本) of a piano composition, it would be fun to share it with you.”
In the future, you may have different opinions with many people. In fact, this can be a good thing. For example, sometimes you may not realize that your ideas are wrong. But by sharing them with others, you have a chance to learn.
How does the writer begin the text
A. By asking a question. B. By giving an example. C. By mentioning a saying. D. By showing a song.
What can we do to help keep a conversation calm
A. Listen to others carefully. B. Avoid talking about differences.
C. Express your own opinions politely. D. Immediately explain why you disagree.
What can Lucy do in the example
A. She can stop arguing about music.
B. She can listen to rock music with her friend.
C. She can listen to classical music with her friend.
D. She can find a rock version of a piano composition.
Which question can best help us find out the writer's purpose
A. Did the writer tell us how to make friends
B. Did the writer give ways to help us express our opinions
C. Did the writer teach us how to win in an argument politely
D. Did the writer provide ways to change someone's opinion
D

Have you found yourself listening to “ancient people” online recently Have you watched past chats in the videos
Creative vloggers are using AI technology to bring famous people from history like Tang Dynasty (唐朝) poets Li Bai and Fu Bai “back to life”. These videos show ancient icons (崇拜对象) speaking in modern language, so they have become popular and caught many people's eyes.
In one video, Du Fu talks about his experience during the hard time. In another, the medical expert Li Shizhen makes fun of modern lifestyles, like trying to be healthy by drinking goji berry (枸杞) water but still staying up late. Besides, we can see that Sima Qian shares the feeling of his traveling in his twenties. Also, Xuanzang tells us how to achieve his dream with a strong will.
These videos lead to a hot discussion. “The videos make me want to learn more about important ancient people. I didn't know much about their stories before,” said Wang Jiayi, 15, from Shandong. The new trend (趋势) isn't for everyone, however. The way these ancient people speak, in high voices and always asking questions, makes some people uncomfortable. They're too pushy (执意强求的) which is different from how they really were, noted Wang Shuotong from Jiangsu.
Xia Boen, 14, from Hubei, felt the same. But thanks to the speaking style in the videos, he was surprised to find that he remembered almost everything they said about their experiences and achievements.
These vloggers use a more modern way to let ancient people “speak for themselves”. “However, we should be careful with these videos, making sure they are not sharing fake (假的) information,” noted Nanfang Daily.

Hello, everyone.
Recently, our group did a survey about students' favorite places to do scientific exploration. The results show that most students, 62%, choose their own school. They believe the school provides well-equipped labs and professional guidance from teachers, which makes it the most convenient and reliable place to learn. Only 6% of students prefer doing exploration at home, while 18% choose universities and 14% choose other places.
As for me, I also like doing scientific exploration at school best. Not only does it have all the necessary tools and materials, but I can also work on experiments with my classmates. Discussing problems together and sharing ideas makes the process more interesting and helps us learn better.
