The light is pouring through the windows as I stare attentively at a violin-shaped piece of wood in my hands. I run my fingertips over the rough surface to feel for imperfections that will need to be removed. “Violin making is easy,” my teacher used to joke, “just take away all the bits of wood that aren’t a violin.”
By the time I’m in my workshop holding this piece of wood, I’ve already been up for many hours. I’m an early riser. After coffee, I head out for an hour-long walk with my dog, Eggs. Most of my ideas come to me during morning walks, including my proudest project to date: a violin I made for a film supporting the Right to Roam campaign, which advocates for public access to the countryside in the landscape. The violin has become the community’s shared treasure for local folk players to take into the hills and play.
I love walking into my workshop in the morning. My work varies from small adjustments to more extensive work requiring a careful handling of the violin as a historical object. You never know what you’ll find inside an old violin. One of my favorite repairs involved a violin full of cracks. Although many heritage crafts, like violin making, play a vital role in cultural economy, they’re usually not big money earners. My choice of job also informs my lifestyle. While my friends devote time to travel and spend money on luxuries, I invest my time in community, nature, and my growth as a craftsperson. In the summer of 2022, Jonathan Haidt was working on a book project about how smartphones and social media rewired society in the 2010s. He quickly realized that the impact of social media on kids could not be explained in one chapter — it needed a book of its own. Hence, The Anxious Generation is Volume 1, in a sense, of the larger project.
Haidt begins The Anxious Generation by examining adolescent mental health trends. What happened to young people in the early 2010s that caused the rise of anxiety and depression around 2012 He offers an explanation by telling two stories: the decline of play-based childhood and the rise of phone-based childhood. He shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s. He presents more than a dozen mechanisms by which this “great rewiring of childhood” has affected children’s social and brain development, covering everything from lack of sleep to divided attention, addiction, loneliness, social comparison, and perfectionism.
Most important, Haidt issues a clear call to action. He explains how parents, school, governments, tech companies, and young people are trapped in “collective action problems”, and then proposes four simple rules that might set us free: giving children far more time for outdoor play with mixed-age groups; involving them in stable real-world communities rather than online networks; delaying smartphones and restricting social media access until at least high school.
He emphasizes that change is possible if society acts together. We cannot afford to ignore his findings about protecting our children — and ourselves — from the psychological damage of a phone-based life.

Pancreatic cancer has become one of the deadliest forms of cancer across the world — it is often called a “silent killer” largely because early detection is so hard. Symptoms rarely appear until the disease has advanced, leaving patients with a five-year survival rate of only about 10 percent.
Now, new research suggests that an AI tool may significantly improve early detection of this deadly disease. In a study published in Nature Medicine, researchers from China found that an AI tool called PANDA, when analyzing routine noncontrast CT scans, could correctly identify 93 percent of people who had pancreatic lesions (病灶).
Contrast CT scans, used to confirm its presence, involve large amounts of radiation, so many experts advise against widespread screening. But lower-radiation alternatives, noncontrast CTs, produce less clearly defined pictures, making it harder for radiologists to identify abnormalities. The tool, developed by researchers with Chinese tech giant Alibaba, was trained to address this by using an AI model to spot potential cancer.
Crucially, this process relies on the AI model being trained on mapped data from contrast scans. The team first asked a radiologist to manually mark the contrast CTs of more than 2,000 known pancreatic patients with the locations of their lesions. The engineers then algorithmically (通过算法) mapped the highlighted lesions onto the same patients’ noncontrast CTs. Those noncontrast scans were then fed to the AI model, so that it could learn to detect potential cancer even in less detailed images.
Still, researchers cautioned that more real-world data was needed to determine whether the tool’s benefits outweigh the risks of false positives and unnecessary testing. Dr. Ajit Goenka of Mayo Clinic stressed the importance of reducing false alarms, noting that hundreds in Ningbo faced unnecessary terror and testing only to find they were healthy. Dr. Diane Simeone of UC San Diego added that the tool might be more useful for trainee doctors than for experienced specialists, but acknowledged it could be a valuable backstop for hospitals lacking specialists.
