Next to our house, there lived an old couple. It seemed that they didn’t feel like making any connections with
others. The only words we ever heard from them were “Keep out of our rosebushes (蔷薇花丛)!”
The rosebushes served as a fence between our house and theirs. A suitable place was a headache for us when
第 4页/共 16页
we wanted to play softball (垒球) games. One day, my sister and I had a game in our yard. We should have played
elsewhere to avoid hurting the roses, but we secretly enjoyed making the couple uncomfortable. My sister was
trying to catch a fly ball. She fell over some rosebushes. Just at that moment, the woman Ruby Jones appeared. She
shouted angrily, “Look at what you’ve done to our family’s roses!”
Hearing this, my sister and I ran into our house. Breathlessly, we told Mom what had happened. “Girls, I have
told you not to play softball near those e outside right now and help me fix them,” my mom said. We
followed her outside to help repair the rose fence. While Mom was examining the damaged (被损坏的) roses,
Ruby slowly walked out. She looked sad with her eyes red.
She walked over to my mother. We girls held our breath, waiting to see who would shout first and what
terrible things would happen. “We are sorry about the flowers,” said Mom. Ruby smiled through her tears. She said,
“The roses are very ▲ . They remind me of my mother. She died because of a serious illness several years
ago.” Hearing that, I felt a sense of shame. My mother went down to examine the damaged roses, and the woman
did the same. So did my sister and I.

When you use language, you say words and the person you are speaking to hears what you say. Then, that
person can respond to you. But some people do not hear very well—some people cannot hear at all. People who do
not hear are deaf. Because they are unable to hear sound, they don’t use spoken language. Instead, they use sign
language. In the United States, the sign language many deaf people use is called American Sign Language (ASL).
ASL is a very common language.
ASL is a language just as English and Spanish are languages, but ASL uses signs and facial expressions
第 5页/共 16页
instead of spoken words. For example, when you want to say the words please and yes, you pronounce them aloud.
But in ASL, there are special signs for these words. You can learn them yourself. To say please in ASL, put the
palm (手掌) of your hand on your chest (胸部). Now, keep your hand flat, and make a circle with your palm. To
say yes in ASL, make a fist (拳头) and then gently move your fist up and down as if it were a head nodding.
Are you interested in learning more ASL You have several choices of learning. Some schools offer ASL
classes. There are also online ASL classes that can help you to acquire the language. You can ask your parents
about signing up for classes. There are also online ASL dictionaries and pictures. If you decide to learn ASL, you
should practice every day. That way, you will get better and better at using signs. And then you will learn to
communicate in a whole new way!
29. Which is NOT a fact about ASL
A. It is a common language. B. Some schools offer ASL classes.
C. It uses signs and facial expressions. D. All deaf people use ASL to communicate.
30. The underlined word “them” refers to ________.
A. special signs B. facial expressions C. hearing problems D. spoken words
31. What does the underlined word “acquire” mean in the text
A. Express your thoughts. B. Make something better.
C. Do something with a tool. D. Get knowledge about something.

Have you heard of Pi Day You may think it is all about having pies. That’s only partly right. Pi Day is
actually about maths! Every year on March 14th, maths lovers and scientists celebrate Pi Day to honor (纪念) the
special number pi.
▲ It was founded in 1988 by Larry Shaw, who worked at the Exploratorium, a science museum. He
started the Pi Day celebration. During the first event, both workers in the Exploratorium and the public walked
around one of the circular (圆形的) spaces in the museum while eating fruit pies. Later, the celebration became a
yearly tradition at the museum and more visitors joined in. In 2019, the UNESCO set the day, March 14th, as the
International Day of Mathematics.
There are many kinds of celebrations of Pi Day. Some people choose to remember as many digits (数字) of pi
as they can, while some take part in a pi party, enjoying delicious pies and dancing to music. Besides, people use a
writing style called Pilish to celebrate Pi Day. In a Pilish sentence, the number of letters in each word matches the
digits of pi. The first word has three letters, the second has one letter, the third has four letters, and so on. An
第 6页/共 16页
engineer Michal Keith, even wrote a book called Not A Wake by using Pilish.

Like many American teenagers, Dick Fosbury wanted to be a professional sportsman but he had a problem—
he wasn’t very good at any sport. He didn’t play football very well and although he was very tall, he wasn’t a very
good basketball player either. He tried running, throwing and jumping, and of all these events he found that he
wasn’t too bad at the high jump.
At that time there were two popular styles of jumping over the bar. There was the scissors jump, where the
athlete jumped over using his legs like a pair of scissors and there was the straddle (俯卧式跳高), where the athlete
jumped face forward. By following the second style, Dick Fosbury could jump high but it was still a long way from
the world record of 2.23m.
One afternoon he decided to do something completely different. Instead of jumping face forward, he turned
around and made a backward jump by using the natural shape of his back. The results were amazing! In a few
hours he improved his personal best by over 20 cm. When Dick Fosbury took part in the 1968 Olympics, no one
knew his name. As the competition started, people in the crowd began to notice that one of the jumpers had a very
strange style. At first, they laughed each time he jumped over the bar. After nearly four hours, there were only three
jumpers left. The crowd weren’t laughing at him anymore. They were cheering him on. The bar was at 2.24m—a
new world record. The other two jumpers knocked it off, but Fosbury flew over. He won the gold medal.
第 7页/共 16页
Dick Fosbury was now famous all over the world and his Fosbury Flop changed forever the way that high
jumpers jumped.
36. Why did Fosbury choose to do the high jump
A. He liked the high jump best. B. He was tall enough to jump well.
C. He liked one of the jumping styles. D. He could do better at the high jump.
37. Which of the following was the world record for the high jump after 1968
A. 1.83m. B. 2.23m. C. 2.24m. D. 2.43m.
38. Which of the following is the Fosbury flop
A. B. C. D.
39. How might people feel when they first saw Fosbury’s new jumping style
A. Funny. B. Surprised. C. Relaxed. D. Terrible.
40. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To describe three styles of the high jump.
B. To show the development of the high jump.
C. To introduce a person who made a difference in the high jump.
D. To encourage us to do the high jump to keep healthy.

The 5G technology and Bei Dou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) services help a lot in the rapid
development of smart transportation in China.
In recent years, Chinese technology companies have worked hard to speed up the commercial (商业的) use of
robotaxis. Baidu carried out its driverless ride-hailing (打车) service in Shenzhen, Guangdong and its Apollo
Gorobotaxis have been put into use.
Passengers can download apps like Apollo Go or Baidu Map to their smartphones, and tell the app where they
are and where they want to go. Then, a car will appear. With sensors and cameras placed all over the car, a
computer takes full control of the drive. A screen on the back seats shows how the software of the robotaxi looks at
the space around the car. The software is designed to see other cars, humans, bikes, and anything else that might get
in its way.
At the same time, drivers in the city can also enjoy the conveniences of smart transportation. In Guiyang,
Guizhou, at some smart parking lots, drivers only need to park their cars at an induction line (感应线). A smart
第 8页/共 16页
system can put the car into a specific (特定的) area. When drivers want to get their cars back, they make a request
on the terminal device (终端设备) and the car will come out of the parking lot by itself in about one minute.
All in all, smart transportation uses new technologies to make our lives more convenient and make moving
around a city much easier.
