A ship had sailed around the world and was on its homeward journey. The weather was calm and everyone was on deck (甲板). A large monkey was jumping around among the people, making faces and copying them. One could see that she knew they enjoyed watching her, and this excited her still more.
The monkey jumped towards a twelve-year-old boy, the captain’s son, and took his hat, put it on her own and quickly climbed up the mast (桅杆). Everyone laughed. The boy, now hatless, didn’t know whether to laugh or to cry.
He shouted at the monkey, but this only made her begin to tear the hat and make more faces.
The sailors laughed louder, but the boy turned red, threw off his jacket and rushed up after the monkey. In no time he had climbed the rope ladder to the first yardarm. But just as the boy was about to catch his hat, the monkey quickly climbed even higher.
“I’ll get you!” the boy shouted and also climbed higher. The animal led him on, climbing still higher, to the top of the high mast.
Up there, holding fast to a rope with one foot, the monkey moved her body forward, and hung the hat on the end of the highest yardarm. Then she reached the very top of the mast and laughed out loud. It was about four feet from the mast to the tip of the yardarm where the hat hung, and only by letting go of both the rope and the mast could it be reached.
The boy was so upset by now that, forgetting all danger, he stepped onto this highest yardarm, balancing himself the best he could with his arms.
Everyone on deck was looking in silence. They knew that if the boy fell, he would be killed.
Suddenly someone cried out in horror. The cry brought the boy to his senses. He looked down and began to shake.
At that moment, the captain came out. When he saw his son in danger, he quickly raised his gun and shouted, “Jump! Jump into the water! Or I’ll fire!”
The boy stood there, not understanding.
“Jump! One, two…”

Every time generative artificial intelligence (生成式人工智能) writes an e-mail or creates a picture, the planet pays for it. A single chat with ChatGPT can heat up a server (服务器) so much that it requires a bottle of water to cool it. And recent research in Nature Computational Science points out another worry: AI is a big cause of the world’s growing pile of electronic waste. The study found that generative AI applications alone could add 1.2 million to 5 million metric tons of this hazardous trash (有害垃圾) to the planet by 2030, depending on how quickly the industry grows.
Such a contribution would add to the tens of millions of tons of electronic products the world produces every year. Phones, computers, and other electronic products often contain toxic substances. When improperly thrown away, they can pollute air, water and soil. The UN found that in 2022, about 78% of the world’s e-waste ended up in landfills or at unofficial (非正规) recycling places.
Asaf Tzachor, a researcher at Reichman University, says we must reduce this technology’s environmental influence. The researchers warn that more and more people might use generative AI. Hardware design innovations, meanwhile, could reduce e-waste, but other technological development can make systems cheaper so that more people may use it.
This study’s main value comes from its attention to AI’s broad environmental influences, says Shaolei Ren of the University of California. “We might want these companies to slow down a bit.”
Few countries have strong laws for the e-waste, and those that do often fail to enforce their laws on it. 25 U.S. states have e-waste management policies, but there is no law that requires electronics recycling. Some companies, however, announce to be taking independent action. Microsoft and Google have promised to reach net zero waste by 2030; achieving them would most likely need to reduce or recycle AI related e-waste.
________ AI products are harder to recycle than standard electronics because they often include a lot of private customer information, says Kees Baldé, an e-waste researcher at the U.N. Institute for Training and Research. But big tech companies can afford to both erase those data and properly deal with their electronics, he points out. “Yes, it costs something, but the gains for society are much larger.”
34.How does the writer show that generative AI produces problems
A. By giving examples. B. By telling stories.
C. By asking questions. D. By showing pictures.
35.What can we learn about e-waste
A. It pollutes the water seriously because it can’t be recycled.
B. It can be reduced by developing new generative AI systems.
C. It may pollute the environment if improperly thrown away.
D. It is mainly produced by common electronic products like phones.
36.Which of the following is the most suitable for ________
A. Moreover, there’s another problem as well.
B. As a result, they devoted much money to recycling.
C. However, some companies care little about customers.
D. Instead, the use of AI products is increasing even faster.
37.What will the writer most probably talk about next
A. The advantages of using generative AI.
B. The history of inventing generative AI.
C. The influence AI has on the environment.
D. The ways to solve AI’s e-waste problem.
四、任务型阅读-简答:本大题共1小题,共10分。
38.阅读下面的短文,然后根据短文内容回答问题,每小题答案不超过10个单词。
In China, red lanterns have long been a familiar sight. On cold winter nights long ago, they helped travellers find their way safely through dark streets. They could be seen outside a palace or in front of houses, bringing light and good wishes. Today, red lanterns are closely connected with Chinese New Year celebrations across the country and remind people of traditions passed down from their ancestors (祖先).
To imagine how many lanterns would be hung here, at any given time, is like trying to count how many trees would be in the Amazon (亚马逊地区). And yet it is said that as many as 80% of the country’s lanterns are still made-by hand-in one small town in Hebei Province.
When you walk along the streets of Tuntou, you can see lantern making almost everywhere. Along the main street, red lanterns are piled high in shops and homes.
No one knows exactly when the craft (手艺) started in this part of northern China but, if you’re born in Tuntou, you will learn how to make lanterns at a very young age. “When you see others in your family doing it every day, you get the hang of it quickly,” one woman told the reporter, adding that “Kids here can pick it up at around 10.”
In today’s world of modern factories and machines, it is surprising that this small town still plays an important role in the lantern market. Local makers can produce many kinds of lanterns and can complete even small orders quickly and at a low price.
In the future, modern production may find a way to match what this village can do by hand. However, for now, this is China’s lantern town, and its people are proud that it is known this way.

59.【答案】 Healthy Me, Better Me
Health is very important to everyone. It helps us stay energetic and happy. I pay much attention to my daily health.
First, I usually eat and drink healthily. I eat lots of vegetables and seldom have junk food. Second, I always sleep for at least 8 hours a day, so I feel fresh in class. However, I sometimes exercise less than 2 hours a day due to my busy schoolwork. I also try to keep in a good mood.
To make myself better, I plan to exercise more regularly, like running for 30 minutes every morning. I will also keep eating healthily and staying positive. Healthy me, better me—I will make it.
