RENEW — Join artist and upcycler Vanessa Gibson for an upcycling textiles (纺织物) workshop. Learn simple hand stitching and applique techniques while creating a small practical item from reclaimed fabric.
Both workshops will run for two hours and include a refreshment break where you can get to know your fellow re-users better.

Without the need for long trips or heavy equipment, urban camping is redefining how urban residents engage with nature — right in urban green spaces. There, the charm of the wild and the convenience of the city are no longer an either-or choice, but a harmonious balance that defines a new urban lifestyle.
“When I bought this expensive but durable equipment about 10 years ago, my parents said I was crazy because we could never spare so many weekends to drive out of the city for camping,” 25-year-old Beijing resident Chen Linjun told Beijing Review. “Now we enjoy about two to three camping nights every month in Nanyuan Forest Wetland Park in Beijing’s Fengtai District, which is only a 15-minute drive from our place and home to vast grasslands.”
“As an enthusiastic camper, I can confirm that a decade ago, people didn’t camp out in urban parks — there weren’t so many parks back then, either,” said Chen. “At that time, we Beijing campers would drive long hours to places in Hebei Province or Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, where conditions were better for camping. Now, you see people camping everywhere in Beijing’s parks. What used to be a niche (小众的) hobby has now become a popular pastime.”
Chen’s observation is supported by the growth of the camping economy and strategic adjustments within the camping and outdoor industries. Nowadays, increasingly large numbers of users go to AI models for personal advice and connections. These personal uses take advantage of the illusion (错觉) that the models can actually care about people.
AI may care about you by being constantly available and responsive. But serious care by parents, good friends, responsible health professionals, and people in general has a strong emotional component. Care is not just a belief, but also a feeling that you have about people, ranging from concern for a friend’s health to the intense love for a romantic partner or family member. But AI just pretends to have such feelings.
AI models seem to understand emotions because they have been trained on billions of sources that include psychology textbooks, journal articles, and novels about human emotions. They can recognize situations such as becoming a parent and falling in love romantically, and they can appraise these situations as satisfying people’s goals and thereby making them happy. But they cannot capture the physiological dimensions of emotion because they completely lack the relevant physiological changes.
Without the crucially relevant physiology, AI models can only fake (伪造) emotions such as caring about people. They may seem empathic by saying “I know how you feel”, but such empathy is fake because they have no experience of emotions. Such sentences can mislead people into thinking they have found a new friend and that they don’t have to pursue the more complex and variable social relationships with people who actually care about them. The social cost of the illusion of AI care runs much deeper when people go for the easy agreement and support of AI models.
I agree with AI researchers Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio that the new technology is both powerful and dangerous, and therefore requires strict government regulation (监管). I hope that such regulation will include limits on the ability of AI models to pretend to care about people and thereby lead them to interactions that they mistake for friendship, love, and compassion.

New research from the University of Southampton and the University of East Anglia (UEA) points to a major change in South Pacific climate conditions that began around 1,000 years ago. The study suggests this shift may have influenced where people chose to live, encouraging movement toward islands farther east as parts of the western region grew increasingly dry.
“The Pacific Islands today are under threat from a changing climate, but this is not the first time that the inhabitants of the region have had to adapt to a changing climate,” says Professor David Sear. “Our research suggests that beginning around 1,000 years ago, people in the region were effectively chasing (追逐) the rain eastwards to adapt to the stress placed on growing populations by a period of drier conditions in the western South Pacific.”
To uncover how conditions changed, the research team collected sediment (沉积物) cores from Western and Eastern Polynesia. These sediments contain plant waxes (蜡) — fatty layers left on leaves that preserve chemical clues about past climate. Detailed laboratory analysis of the waxes allowed scientists to determine whether conditions were wetter or drier when the plants were growing. The new data were combined with existing records from other locations across Polynesia and the wider Pacific. Using this comprehensive dataset, the team reconstructed changes in Pacific rainfall over the past 1,500 years.
Evidence indicates long-settled islands in Western Polynesia experienced gradual losses of rainfall. Meanwhile, more distant islands in Eastern Polynesia became wetter over time, potentially making them more appealing for settlement. Dr. Mark Peaple of the University of Southampton says, “Water is vital for drinking and agriculture. If this vital natural resource was running low, it’s logical that over time the population would follow it and settle down in areas with more reliable water security — even if this meant adventurous journeys across the ocean.”
Co-Principal Investigator Professor Manoj Joshi, also from UEA, says, “By better understanding how the climate of the South Pacific was affected by climate change in the past, we can build better predictions for how future climate change will affect the region.”
