I was on the edge of burnout, after months of hard preparation for the college entrance exams.

On Thursday, at its 20th regular meeting in India’s capital, a UNESCO committee decided to
move China’s “Hezhen Yimakan storytelling”(赫哲族的“伊玛堪说唱”) from the Urgent (急需的)
Protection List to the World Representative List of Intangible (非物质 ) Cultural Heritage. In
recognition of the great progress made in preserving this tradition, the committee also decided to
include the protection program for Hezhen Yimakan storytelling in the Register of Good Protection
Practices. This achievement marks a successful transition of a heritage project into the representative
list. It’s also the first example of a project that has been transitioned and added to the Register of
Good Protection Practices at the same time.
China now has 45 projects included in UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage lists, the highest
number of entries of any country in the world.

The Hezhe people live in the Heilong-Songhua-Ussuri-river region of northeastern China. With a
population of just over 5,000, they are among China’s smallest ethnic (民族的 ) groups, Yimakan
storytelling is a rich oral tradition that has been passed down through generations. It is performed in
the Hezhe language. It mixes spoken stories with singing to share the history, hero tales, fishing and
hunting life, traditions, and values of the Hezhe people. This tradition plays a key role in recording
history, educating future generations, and providing fun.
Since it was added to the Urgent Protection List in 2011, many have collaborated to help this
tradition. Community members, artists, schools, cultural centers, and government bodies have all
made efforts to make sure it stays alive and becomes better known.
In December 2023, China sent a report to UNESCO about how this cultural heritage was being
protected, and asked to move it to the Representative List. In December 2024, the committee
