Recently, on a snow-covered walk through Milham Park in Portage Lake, Michigan, a woman named Laura noticed something strange up ahead. There were two little black animals in the snow,shaking under a bush. Despite the enormous variety of languages spoken around the world, certain grammatical patterns keep showing up. A new study finds that about one-third of long-standing“language universals” are backed by strong statistical evidence when tested using modern methods.
An international research team led by Annemarie Verkerk (Saarland University) and RussellD. Gray (Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology) analyzed 191 proposed universals using Grambank, the largest database of grammatical features ever created. Their data covered more than 1,700 languages. In earlier research, language experts tried to avoid similarities between related or nearby languages by selecting samples from distant regions. While helpful, that approach does not fully remove hidden connections between languages. It can also weaken statistical results and fails to reveal how languages change over time.
To address this, the researchers used Bayesian spatio-phylogenetic analyses, which account for both shared ancestry and geographic influence. This approach offers a much higher level of statistical accuracy than most previous studies.
“In the face of huge language diversity, it is interesting to find that languages don’t shift at random,” says Verkerk.“I am delighted that the different types of analyses we did agreed on very similar results, suggesting that language change must be a central component in explaining universals.”
The findings show strong support for several repeated patterns. These include word order preferences, such as whether verbs come before or after objects, and level-based structures, such as how grammatical relationships are marked within sentences. Importantly, these patterns have appeared repeatedly across unirelated languages in different parts of the world. This repetition suggests that there are deep principles guiding how humans organize language.
By identifying which universals truly stand up to hard testing, the study helps narrow the focus for future research. It points scientists toward the underlying cognitive(认知的) and communicative forces that shape human language.

Scientists have created a three-dimensional“heart-on-a-chip”(HOC) that could provide a breakthrough in the fight against the world's leading cause of death, cardiovascular(心血管)disease.
One major challenge is that we cannot easily test how a human heart will react to a drug or disease without putting someone at risk. This engineered heart tissue beats on its own, it releases chemicals to start muscular activity, and it responds predictably to common drugs. It's the first to include a two-way sensing platform that provides real-time tracking of activity throughout the heart tissue down to the cellular level.
In a recent paper, scientists from multiple Canadian institutions describe how they achieved this“significant advance in heart tissue engineering and drug testing.” The key advance here is the integration of sensors that can detect both large-area and small-area heart activity. Both current HOCplatforms and the research team's previous version, described in a 2024 paper, lack high-resolution cellular-level sensing. Small-area sensing is vital because many cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are.associated with impairment in heart muscle cells, the individual beating cells that form heart muscle tissue. As a result, measuring cellular function is critical for preventing heart failure in patients withCVDs.
To build their HOCs, the researchers harvested heart muscle cells and heart connective tissue cells from lab animals. They placed these cells into a soft structure rich in fibrous proteins and nutrients to stimulate growth, and then seeded them on tiny, flexible silicon-based chips(芯片).This is a major step toward testing diseases in the lab, since cell-generated forces govern the development of heart tissues, including their formation, remodeling, contraction efficiency, wound healing, and cancer progression.
Next, the researchers plan to model specific disorders by building heart tissues using cells from patients living with various heart conditions. These include a type of genetic heart muscle disease that can lead to heart failure, as well as irregular heartbeats, an umbrella of disorders that cause heart rate abnormalities.

第二档 (6—10分) —与所给短文有一定的关系，与所提供各段落开头语有一定程度的衔接； —写出了一些有关内容； —语法结构单调、词汇项目有限，有些语法结构和词汇方面的错误，影响了意义的表达； 一较少使用语句间的连接成分，全文内容缺少连贯性。

三、参考范文：
I began to brainstorm ways with my father to protect this pond. We made striking posters to call on people to stop littering and attached them across the community. More importantly, we decided to hold green talks, where we would sincerely share our love for the pond and explain how littering was ruining it. We spent hours preparing gentle and persuasive speeches, hoping to awaken every neighbor's awareness of protecting our beloved shared treasure.
After our one-week green talks, I called on neighbors to start our much - needed cleanup. People of all ages took part actively. We picked up rubbish, cleaned the dark mud and planted young grass along the banks. Gradually, the unpleasant smell disappeared and clear water returned.
