显性时间词:设空处常包含或需要呼应明确的时间状语,如 then, later, after that, the next morning, finally, a few hours later 等。
Without hesitation, Michael took off his favorite jacket and put it around the little girl."
例如,上文在描述派对的准备,空后突然转到派对现场的混乱,那么空处很可能是一个像 "However, when the party began, everything went out of control."
例如,上文 "John spent months practicing every day after school",空处很可能是 "As a result, he won the first prize in the competition"。
例如,空后说 "The audience burst into laughter and applause",那么空处可能是 "He told a hilarious joke that lightened the mood"。
He realized that only by taking this risk could he truly grow."
举例:上文描述主角比赛失利后情绪低落,空处 "Seeing his teammates' encouraging smiles, however, a new determination sparked inside him."
Overwhelmed by guilt, he decided to apologize."
Helping the old man back to his feet, she felt a warm sense of satisfaction."
如探险的例子,空处 "The full moon cast long, dancing shadows through the thick trees, making every rustle of leaves sound like a whisper."
例如,文章开头提到母亲送给主角一枚幸运硬币,在故事高潮主角面临巨大挑战时,空处可能就是 "He reached into his pocket, feeling the familiar surface of the lucky coin.",这个细节起到了坚定信念、推动情节的作用。
技巧:迅速浏览全文,将所有显性的时间状语(如 then, later, after that, the next day, finally)和序列词(first, second, at the beginning, in the end)圈划出来。
应用:空前提及某个意图或动作(如 “He reached for the last piece of cake”),空后描述了结果(如 “But his sister gave him an angry look”)。那么空处很可能是一个描述动作完成或状态出现的句子,如 “and was about to put it in his mouth”。
空处很可能是一个像 "Suddenly, he had an idea and suggested going for an adventure in the woods."
应用:上文是 "The sky darkened unexpectedly." (因),空处应是 "Therefore, we had to cancel our picnic plan immediately."
技巧:关注空格前后是否有因果关系的信号词,如 because, since, as, so, therefore, as a result, consequently, why, reason 等。
应用:上文 "He gave all his savings to the stranger.",空处可能是 "He believed that helping others in need was the true meaning of happiness."
如果上文是 He felt so disappointed...,而下文是 ...he jumped with joy,空处必然有一个事件或细节导致了他的情绪从消极转向积极。
行为→情感:寻找体现 "After doing..., she felt..."
技巧:特别注意 but, however, though, surprisingly 等转折词。
He failed the exam. ______, he didn't give up." 空处需要填入一个体现转折和情感韧性的句子,如 "Feeling frustrated as he was" 或 "To everyone's surprise"。
We have all heard that if you talk to yourself, you’re crazy, 1 According to research, talking to yourself in a positive way is actually very healthy for your mind
My first exposure to positive self-talk was reading The Little Engine That Could. Do you remember that book from your childhood While trying to make it up a big hill, the little engine keeps saying to himself, “I think I can, I think I can.” And of course, he makes it. 2
Positive self-talk is one of the most valuable tools you can use to keep yourself physically and mentally balanced. Many Olympic and professional athletes use it every time they practice or compete.
3 My own personal favorite is “I’m okay”, back when I was in the movie business. I used to work with the stunt (特技) team. I was told that one of their simple but effective secrets was to stay loose and talk to their body. I had the chance to try it out one day. My apartment was on the second floor of a duplex (复式公寓), and one rainy day I slipped on the top step and started falling over. Then I just kept telling myself, “I’m okay.” 4 There were only a few scratches (擦伤) on my legs. I believe to this day that it was the simple positive self-talk that helped keep me from being seriously injured.
Positive self-talk can also help you calm down from anxiety and feel less sad. There was a period of time when I felt upset. Every morning, I woke up and said to myself, “Hi, Barton. You’re going to have a good day today.” 5 When I did it throughout the day, fewer things would bother me, and I became friendlier to myself.
A.In fact, that’s not always the case.
B.Much to my surprise, I was just fine
C.It’s a valuable lesson for us to learn and remember.
D.Instead, there are several different types of self-talk.
E.You know, I was programming my brain to feel good.
F.When it comes to positive self-talk, the simpler, the better.
G.That was an opportunity for me to try something challenging.
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.F 4.B 5.E
1. 前文提到“We have all heard that if you talk to yourself, you’re crazy”(我们都听说过,如果你自言自语,你就疯了。),及空后“According to research, talking to yourself in a positive way is actually very healthy for your mind”(根据研究,以积极的方式自言自语实际上对你的大脑非常健康)可知,说明以健康的方式进行自言自语是对自身有帮助的,由此判断该空所填内容与前一句构成转折关系,A项“In fact, that’s not always the case.”(事实上,情况并非总是如此)符合文意,与上文构成转折关系。故选A。
C项“It’s a valuable lesson for us to learn and remember.”(这是值得我们学习和记住的宝贵一课。)
3.根据空后“My own personal favorite is ‘I’m okay’. F项“When it comes to positive self-talk, the simpler, the better.”(当谈到积极的自我对话时,越简单越好。)
4.根据空后“There were only a few scratches (擦伤) on my legs. I believe to this day that it was the simple positive self-talk that helped keep me from being seriously injured.”(我没事我的腿上只有几处抓痕。 B项“Much to my surprise, I was just fine”(令我非常惊讶的是, 我并无大碍)符合文意,起到承上启下的作用。故选B。
5.根据空前“Every morning, I woke up and said to myself, ‘Hi, Barton, You’re going to have a good day today.’”(每天早晨醒来,我对自己说:“你好,巴顿。 E项“You know, I was programming my brain to feel good.”(我一直在让自己的大脑感觉良好。)
If anyone had told me three years ago that I would be spending most of my weekends camping, I would have laughed heartily. Campers, in my eyes, were people who enjoyed insect bites, ill-cooked meals, and uncomfortable sleeping bags. They had nothing in common with me. 1 The friends who introduced me to camping thought that it meant to be a pioneer. 2 We sleep in a tent, cooked over an open fire, and walked a long distance to take the shower and use the bathroom. This brief visit with Mother Nature cost me two days off from work, recovering from a bad case of sunburn and the doctor’s bill for my son’s food poisoning. I was, nevertheless, talked into going on another fun-filled holiday in the wilderness. 3 Instead, we had a pop-up camper with comfortable beds and an air conditioner. My nature-loving friends had remembered to bring all the necessities of life. 4 We have done a lot of it since. Recently, we bought a twenty-eight-foot travel trailer complete with a bathroom and a built-in TV set. There is a separate bedroom, a modern kitchen with a refrigerator. The trailer even has matching carpet and curtains. 5 It must be true that sooner or later, everyone finds his or her way back to nature. I recommend that you find your way in style.
A.This time there was no tent.
B.Things are going to be improved.
C.The trip they took me on was a rough one.
D.However, I have learned a lot about camping since then.
E.I must say that I have really come to like camping.
F.After the trip, my family became very interested in camping.
G.There were no modern conveniences to make life easier.

There’s that old saying: How you do one thing is how you do everything. 1 , it shows in everything that you do, even when playing music.
I recently went to a concert with some other musicians in town (many of whom I was meeting for the first time). 2 , I spent more time in my head thinking about my drumming instead of actually paying attention to what was going on. This time though, I found that I was more attentive and was able to support the other musicians more through my playing.
3 . And I could feel the audience was enjoying the music more too, because the music was no longer about me, it was about all of us connecting through the universal language of music.
Afterwards, the musicians I played with told me they felt like our hearts were connected while playing, and that we were able to achieve a new level of playing together thanks to our collected approach. When playing, we didn’t consider how to show ourselves off. 4 .
I believe that the best musicians in the world have this in common; which is to see past their own values, and to listen to/connect with their audience and fellow musicians. I’ve realized all of this thanks to my practice of being a more compassionate and caring person.
So, I would like to thank everyone on this website for opening your hearts and showing me how to be a more caring person. 1 , but also through my music, and to those who listen.
A.When I used to connect with other musicians
B.Therefore, as you become more kind and sympathetic
C.Because of this, our music was better than ever before
D.There was just us sharing ourselves with our open hearts
E.I often find music moves me to be open and connect with others
F.There are languages that are universal, music and kindness are two of those languages
G.As I grow into a more kind and caring person, I can bring joy to not only those in my daily life
【答案】1.B 2.A 3.C 4.D 5.G
1.前文提到“How you do one thing is how you do everything.”(你做一件事的感受就是你做所有事的感受),以及后文提到“it shows in everything that you do, even when playing music”(它体现在你做的每件事上,甚至在演奏音乐的时候)由此判断,前句应该是一个从句,可以表达为:当你富有善心和同情心,它会体现在你所做的事情上。B项“Therefore, as you become more kind and sympathetic”(因此,当你变得更加善良和富有同情心时)该项符合文意。故选B。
2.前文提到“I recently went to a concert with some other musicians in town”(我最近和城里的其他音乐家一起去听了一场音乐会),且从空后的“This time though, I found that I was more attentive and was able to support the other musicians more through my playing.”(但这一次,我发现自己更专注了,能够在演奏中更多地支持其他音乐家。) A项“When I used to connect with other musicians”(当我和和其他音乐家交流的时候),该项符合文意。故选A。
3.后文提到“And I could feel the audience was enjoying the music more too”(我能感觉到观众也更喜欢音乐了),此空讲述这次音乐会的效果。C项“Because of this, our music was better than ever before”(正因为如此,我们的音乐比以往任何时候都好),该项符合文意。故选C。
D项“There was just us sharing ourselves with our open hearts”(只有我们敞开心扉分享彼此),该项符合文意。故选D。
5.前文提到“So, I would like to thank everyone on this website for opening your hearts and showing me how to be a more caring person. ,作者成为了一个更有爱心的人,且从空后的“but also through my music, and to those who listen.”(但也通过我的音乐,对那些听我音乐的人。) G项“As I grow into a more kind and caring person, I can bring joy to not only those in my daily life”(随着我成长为一个更加善良和有爱心的人,我不仅可以在日常生活中给别人带来快乐),该项符合文意。

Years ago, I visited a trade school and was so inspired by the introduction to the plumbing (管道) courses that I enrolled then and there. I completed a plumbing program, earning a certification of competency and was determined to take up an apprenticeship (学徒期)。
However, securing my first apprenticeship seemed impossible in New York City. 1 The only response I received was that I didn’t have enough hands-on experience. I found myself asking, “How can I get experience if I need experience before being considered for my first job ”
Then I spent six months on the Hurricane Harvey Relief Program in Rockport, Texas. During that time, as a volunteer, I was involved in setting up plumbing systems while fitting kitchens and bathrooms. I was able to learn from qualified contractors working on more technical issues. I also learned much about constructing homes, from hanging drywall to fitting doors, windows and flooring. 2 That was because volunteers needed to deal with various unusual problems.
When I returned home and updated my resume (简历), I was impressed by the list of skills I’d gathered in that short space of time. 3 It was encouraging to be offered many interviews. Eventually, I was hired as an apprentice plumber by the first company I interviewed with.

Summer vacation is coming up, and everyone’s talking about making plans. Some are thinking of traveling with their families, while others are looking forward to just hanging out with friends. 1
Finding a job as an 18-year-old isn’t a walk in the park. I mean, I’m still in high school. 2 I can’t work in a factory, obviously. I’ve been looking through the local newspapers and checking out job websites, but it seems like every job requires experience.
There are some fast-food restaurants in town that are hiring, but the idea of working long hours in a hot kitchen and dealing with impatient customers isn’t all that appealing. 3 But when I went to apply, there was already a long line of people, and they seemed to be giving preference to those who were more experienced.
However, I know I really need the money. 4 The one I have now is so old that it takes a long time to start up, and it crashes in the middle of writing essays. It’s super annoying.
There’s one job opportunity that’s caught my eye though. A local gardening service is looking for someone to help with watering plants, weeding, and maybe even doing some light pruning (修剪). I actually kind of like being outdoors. 5 Even though I’m not very strong, I’ll still try it. Maybe if I show that I’m really eager to learn and work hard, someone will give me a chance.

Professional organizer Breaks Down Her Unusual Job
In 2014, Kayleen Kelly took her professional organizing business full-time. She thought she was starting a business that would consist mostly of making messy homes into “beautiful homes” and taking before and after photos. 1
You often think primarily of the type of professional organizer who focuses directly on arranging a beautiful and pleasing space — even one that looks good on Instagram. However, many people who seek out Kelly’s service are struggling with mental health issues, injuries, illness, or are experiencing the death of a loved one. 2 They might not have the mental energy for the projects.
In 2020, Kelly took her experience online in order to help people globally. While Kelly’s job is demanding, what keeps her going is the emotional shift she sees in clients. “When I meet these people, they are saying, ‘Come rescue me, I’m dying,’” she says. “ 5 You can’t beat that. That’s what keeps me coming back.”

When 19-year-old Clarisse Le Guernic arrived in Shanghai from France in 2015, she was shy and only had the courage to order a simple plate of egg fried rice at a local restaurant. 1 . Though small, this routine helped her slowly overcome fear and build confidence in a new language and culture.
2 . Today, at 29, Le Guernic is the founder of Arcade Experiences, a Shanghai- based company that offers immersive “citywalk” tours — guided walks through the city’s lesser-known histories and overlooked corners. Her tours attract both local and international participants.
About half of her clients are Chinese, thanks to her fluency in Mandarin — a skill she began developing in middle school. “I chose Chinese as my second foreign language. 3 ,” she said. “Not many students chose it, so it felt like a cool secret language.”
A short study trip to China during high school left a deep impression on her. She later returned in 2015 as an exchange student at Fudan University in Shanghai and made the city her permanent home in 2019.
In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic ceased international travel, Le Guernic came up with a new idea: designed city walks for people living in Shanghai. “ 1 ,” she explained. “I focused on lesser-known spots or untold stories hidden in popular areas.”
Over the past five years, Le Guernic has developed more than 30 original walking routes through extensive research. Le Guernic believes Shanghai still has many untold stories. “When I first arrived, everything was unfamiliar. After a few years, I thought I understood the city,” she said. “But once I started researching for the tours, I realized how much more there is to uncover. 2 .”

1.根据前文“she was shy and only had the courage to order a simple plate of egg fried rice at a local restaurant.(她很害羞,在当地餐馆里只敢点一份简单的蛋炒饭)”,以及后文“Though small, this routine helped her slowly overcome fear (尽管是小事,但这个习惯帮她慢慢克服了恐惧)”可知,此空需补充“这个习惯”的具体内容——为避免多说话而长期点同一道菜。 G选项“To avoid speaking more than necessary, she stuck to the same dish every day-for an entire month.(为了避免说多余的话,她整整一个月每天都点同一道菜)”中,“avoid speaking more than necessary”呼应前文“shy”,“stuck to the same dish”明确“this routine”的所指,衔接“害羞点蛋炒饭”与“习惯帮她克服恐惧”的逻辑,符合语境。故选G项。
2.根据前文“Though small, this routine helped her slowly overcome fear (尽管是小事,但这个习惯帮她慢慢克服了恐惧)”,以及后文“ Today, at 29, Le Guernic is the founder of Arcade Experiences, a Shanghai- based company that offers immersive “citywalk” tours — guided walks through the city’s lesser-known histories and overlooked corners.
It started with a whisper. “Everyone else got one,” my daughter said to me, her eyes locked on the floor. “I was the only one who didn’t.”
1 The one everyone was talking about in the lunch line and on the walk home. The one that she heard would have unlimited cupcakes. The one she didn’t get an invitation to.
There’s a particular kind of heartbreak that happens when your child feels excluded You don’t just witness their disappointment; you absorb it. 2 “I’m sure it wasn’t personal,” I said softly. “Sometimes kids are only allowed to invite a few people.” But the words felt weak, like a Band-Aid on a big and deep cut.
This experience could have easily been about how to handle exclusion as a parent — how to build resilience (韧性). But what I've learned is less clean than that. 3 You can’t smooth every rough edge. Sometimes, your job is just to sit beside your kid in the thick of it. To let them cry.to let yourself feel angry, and to know that fixing it isn’t always the assignment.
4 She wrote a little note for the birthday kid. “Happy birthday,” it read. “Hope you have fun.” No bitterness. Just kindness. My daughter, in all her smallness, did what I hadn’t even figured out how to do yet: move forward without letting the hurt define her.
And maybe that's the only real takeaway I have. That sometimes, our kids teach us the wisdom we’re still trying to learn.
She never got that invitation. But what we gained quietly was something else: the chance to walk through disappointment together, hand in hand. 1
A.After all, honesty is the best policy.
B.Part of parenting is being powerless.
C.At first, I tried to say something to comfort her.
D.I encouraged her to show forgiveness to the kid.
E.And that, to me, feels like something worth celebrating.
F.The birthday party was definitely to be one to remember.
G.What surprised me most was what happened the next day.
1.根据下文“The one everyone was talking about in the lunch line and on the walk home. F“The birthday party was definitely to be one to remember.
2.根据下文““I’m sure it wasn’t personal,” I said softly. “Sometimes kids are only allowed to invite a few people.” But the words felt weak, like a Band-Aid on a big and deep cut. C“At first, I tried to say something to comfort her.
3.上文“This experience could have easily been about how to handle exclusion as a parent — how to build resilience (韧性). But what I've learned is less clean than that. Sometimes, your job is just to sit beside your kid in the thick of it. B“Part of parenting is being powerless.
4.上文描述作者和女儿面对被排斥的当下感受与应对;而下文“She wrote a little note for the birthday kid. “Happy birthday,” it read. “Hope you have fun.” No bitterness. Just kindness. G“What surprised me most was what happened the next day.
5.上文“She never got that invitation. But what we gained quietly was something else: the chance to walk through disappointment together, hand in hand. E“And that, to me, feels like something worth celebrating.
Elias, a quiet high school student from Oregon, once spent his entire summer hiking across the Cascade Mountains. He wasn’t just walking — he was training himself to listen, not to music or videos, but to the sound of wind through different trees, bird calls, and the steady pattern of his own footsteps. 1
This practice is part of a movement called Deep Nature Connection, which is gaining popularity among teenagers in countries like the U.S. and Canada. 2 During its activities, they spend days outdoors without digital devices. Elias once took part in one of the activities: sitting alone silently next to a stream for a full hour, just observing. Afterward, in the sharing circle, he talked about how he noticed different shades of green in the leaves.
3 According to scientists, the movement can benefit stress reduction for them and increase their focus. It isn’t about learning from books — it’s about touching tree bark, smelling rain, and watching clouds move. For instance, some schools in Vermont have adopted a method called “forest breaks” where students spend short periods outside instead of staying in classrooms. 4 Teachers there report that students return to class calmer and more able to concentrate.
Without this connection, life can feel rushed and shallow, like constantly refreshing social media but never feeling satisfied. 5 After that, he often felt more tired than before. But sitting under an old tree, he began to ask himself what really made him happy.
For Elias, this way of learning through direct experience — not just words — has helped him reflect on himself and quietly shape the way he should learn to live.
A.Adults love nature walks especially.
B.Instead of staying indoors, many join in this movement.
C.The students have changed positively thanks to this method.
D.Elias still likes drawing and working quietly in the classroom.
E.That experience changed how Elias saw everyday life and learning.
F.The outdoor activities help teens slow down and become more mindful.
G.Elias remembers weekends when he just spent so much time on his phone.

In our modern world, we face a puzzling situation: technology connects us more than ever, yet many people feel increasingly disconnected from others. Changes in how we live and work — such as the rise of working from home and the popularity of food delivery apps — have reduced our chances for unplanned, real-life social meetings. 1 We can see this clearly in companies that provide streaming and delivery services, whose success actually relies on people staying apart and choosing digital instead of face-to-face contact.
This situation is very different from social life in the recent past. 2 These photos show more than just old fashions or cars; they reveal a culture where people naturally started conversations and connected with strangers in shared spaces like cafes, buses, and parks. 3 This curiosity led me to start a personal project: I would try to start real conversations with people around me — in shops, in my neighborhood, anywhere I went — to see if this kind of connection was still possible today.
4 I remember walking into a local bakery, attracted by the wonderful smell of fresh bread. I chose what seemed like a simple question to start a conversation, but the baker’s response — though polite — was clearly designed to end our talk quickly. His body language and short answers sent a clear message: he was not interested in continuing the interaction.
I didn’t give up, though. My efforts finally succeeded when I met Graham, a neighbor I often saw smoking outside his apartment. Our chat started with simple greetings, but when I mentioned I was a writer, he thought for a moment and shared a surprisingly thoughtful idea about the power of language. 5 That single meaningful exchange became the foundation for a real connection between us, proving that even in today’s fast-paced world, patient and repeated efforts can still build genuine human relationships.
A.My first attempt to break through this social distance was both educational and disappointing.
B.This meaningful connection immediately created a bridge between us.
C.To understand this change, we can look at photographs of city life from the 1990s or early 2000s.
D.Some modern businesses are directly responsible for this loss.
E.I began to wonder if this forgotten art of casual conversation could be revived in our modern society.
F.What better evidence do we need to prove that people still deeply desire real connection
G.Why has this fundamental human need for connection become so difficult to fulfill in our time
【答案】1.D 2.C 3.E 4.A 5.B
1.上文“Changes in how we live and work — such as the rise of working from home and the popularity of food delivery apps — have reduced our chances for unplanned, real-life social meetings. (我们生活和工作方式的变化——比如居家办公的兴起和外卖应用的流行——减少了我们进行无计划的现实社交会面的机会)”阐述了生活工作方式变化对社交的影响,下文“We can see this clearly in companies that provide streaming and delivery services, whose success actually relies on people staying apart and choosing digital instead of face-to-face contact.

C项“It’s a valuable lesson for us to learn and remember.”(这是值得我们学习和记住的宝贵一课。)
3.根据空后“My own personal favorite is ‘I’m okay’. F项“When it comes to positive self-talk, the simpler, the better.”(当谈到积极的自我对话时,越简单越好。)
4.根据空后“There were only a few scratches (擦伤) on my legs. I believe to this day that it was the simple positive self-talk that helped keep me from being seriously injured.”(我没事我的腿上只有几处抓痕。 B项“Much to my surprise, I was just fine”(令我非常惊讶的是, 我并无大碍)符合文意,起到承上启下的作用。

4 . On campus, Mir took part in blood donation drives, viewing each contribution as more than just a medical act. “To me, it reflects the idea of ‘lifesaving without borders’,” he said.
4 I wouldn’t have got the job if it hadn’t been for what I had learned on the program. If you are currently being told you need hands-on experience before you’ll be considered for an entry-level position, consider volunteering on programs. 5 My story is proof.
A.Many people are eager to be volunteers.
B.I really feel I owe that all to my volunteering experience.
C.With my newfound passion, I chose to get a different position.
D.You’ll learn a variety of skills that can be translated to suit many jobs.
E.I started applying for jobs again and I noticed a shift in responses from employers.
F.So many candidates were competing for the same role and I couldn’t land an interview.
G.There were also plenty of opportunities for me to pick up creative problem-solving skills.
【答案】1.F 2.G 3.E 4.B 5.D

A.Watering plants is quite easy.
B.I want to buy a new laptop for school.
C.But for me, I hope to get a summer job.
D.Their employment faces tough competition.

Her content breaks down her tips and tricks for viewers looking to tidy up their lives. 3 Kelly does all the physical labor of collecting garbage, sorting other items accordingly, cutting out unwanted items and finally, containing what is left (the four steps of the Declutter Core Method) for her clients herself. 4 That is to make the decisions of what to cut and what to clear out.
While Kelly’s job is demanding, what keeps her going is the emotional shift she sees in clients. “When I meet these people, they are saying, ‘Come rescue me, I’m dying,’” she says. “ 5 You can’t beat that. That’s what keeps me coming back.”
A.Kelly has a large following on social media.

【答案】1.E 2.B 3.F 4.C 5.G

My adventure into rock climbing started with a chat on the Internet with Octavia. 1 Climbing has a bad reputation because of occasional accidents, and I was doubtful about how safe it could be. I wanted to find out for myself.
Octavia was super friendly and told me about her climbing journey. 2 They’ve built a life around their love for climbing, spending days in nature with friends. Their story inspired me, showing that you can live unconventionally and still be happy.
Octavia invited me to climb near Brasov, a beautiful place in Romania. I was excited to meet her and experience climbing firsthand. She was patient, teaching me the basics and making sure I had the right equipment. 3
We met in Zǎrnesti and headed to Prǎpǎstiile Zǎrnestilor, a great spot for climbing. The place was crowded with climbers of all ages. Octavia explained the safety features, like ropes and belay (保护) systems, which made me feel secure. 4 It was exciting and tiring, but I felt a sense of achievement. They kept encouraging me, and I kept trying.
Climbing isn’t just physical; it’s also mental. I had to solve problems and find ways to move up. Octavia’s guidance made the experience unforgettable. That day, I realized climbing is more than a sport; it’s a way of life. It’s about shared passion. 5 The world of rock climbing had enticed (吸引) me, and Octavia’s firm support ensured that I would answer that call.

B.She was also an experienced rock climber.
C.With their encouragement, I started my first climb.
D.She started as a teenager and now climbs with her husband.
E.Her blog posts got me interested, and I wanted to explore more.
F.I felt I was part of something bigger and couldn’t wait to climb again.
G.I’d always been curious about climbing but never had the chance to try it.

Throughout history, humans have been crazy about exploration. From Zheng He to Marco Polo, the adventurous spirit is universal, as is the desire to learn about ourselves, the world and its cultures.
Growing up in a small town in Wales, perhaps these feelings of curiosity had been quietly building up inside me for years. There’s something comforting about familiarity — knowing every street, every building, even every person. 1 . Maybe that small-town upbringing planted the seeds of a desire to see more of the world—to embrace the unknown and discover cultures vastly different from my own.
Today, travel has never been easier. 2 . Yet it’s a double-edged sword: while accessible global travel makes the world feel smaller, travel’s old sense of discovery has dulled. Most destinations are documented and shared online, so finding untouched, unique places grows harder.
3 . Vast, with 56 ethnic groups, diverse climates and 5,000 years of history, it offers endless adventures. Beijing, in particular, contrasts sharply with my hometown. Even after over five years here, I’ve only touched the surface — though I’ve visited famous landmarks, countless corners remain unexplored.
A recent hike led me to Changyucheng village near Beijing’s Great Wall. Walking through it, I turned a corner and found a small shrine (神龛) hidden between houses. Unlike grand temples, its worn walls and faded details gave the unique travel experience I wanted. I learned it honored Zhenwu Dadi, a Taoist protector. It is common knowledge to locals, but entirely new to me. 4 .
While Beijing’s iconic sights are awe-inspiring, wandering an unknown village and running into an ancient shrine — then hearing its story from locals — feels romantic and mysterious. 5 . That’s China’s magic: its vastness and deep heritage keep the exploration spirit alive.
A.What took Marco Polo years now takes us days
B.China still offers endless opportunities for adventure
C.Actually, most local people rarely visit the small shrine
D.Thankfully, moving to China was the right choice for me
E.But that same familiarity can hold back new experiences
F.These small cultural details feel more personal than tourist spots
G.It’s like stepping back in time, just as early explorers might have felt
【答案】1.E 2.A 3.D 4.F 5.G

Last month, a group of teenagers aged 14-18 from Lancaster Country Day School (LCDS) in Pennsylvania started their first trip to China. Far more than a typical tourist visit, this three-week adventure took them from Beijing to Xi’an, Chengdu, and finally to Yunnan Province, where they spent two weeks immersing (沉浸) themselves in local culture and gained a deeper understanding of Chinese culture. 1 .

My volunteer journey began during a summer break when I decided to join a local organization that focused on supporting underprivileged (贫苦的) children. Initially, I viewed it as a way to spend my free time contributing to a good cause. 1
At first, I was shocked by the challenges these children faced — poverty, lack of education, and emotional pain. 2 However, as I spent more time with them, I started to understand their resilience (适应力) and strength, which inspired me to give my best effort. That marked the beginning of a deep and lasting connection.
3 One such instance occurred when I was helping a young girl, Maria, with her homework. She struggled with math and was often discouraged. After weeks of working together, I saw a breakthrough as I taught a difficult concept. The joy in her eyes was indescribable. It was then that I realized the power of patience and support in making a visible difference. 4 I was responsible for coordinating (协调) a group of volunteers, which taught me leadership and teamwork skills. The success not only lifted the children but also reinforced my belief in the importance of joint effort. Those moments shaped my approach to volunteering and motivated me to seek more opportunities to serve.
The volunteer experience did more than provide valuable skills — it shifted my priorities and life goals. Before that, I had been focused on academic success and individual accomplishments. 5 I developed a passion for social work and community service, and I now try to integrate these into my future career.
A.Despite my intentions, I felt unprepared to help truly.
B.Facing unexpected challenges helped me become more resourceful.
C.However, the experience taught me that there is more to life than those.

E.Several critical moments made my volunteer experience truly life-changing.
F.The stories demonstrated the impact volunteering can have on individual growth.
G.Little did I know that the experience would significantly change my outlook on life.
It was a winter morning when I received a package with no return address. The plain brown wrapping gave no clues, and my name was handwritten in shaky letters. 1
Inside was a small wooden box, its surface carved with complicated patterns of vines and birds. I lifted the lid (盖子). A faint scent of cedar (雪松) filled the air. 2 It was my grandmother’s brooch (胸针) — the one she always wore to Sunday dinners, with a single pearl suspended like a dewdrop. She had passed away three months earlier, and the family assumed the jewelry had been lost in the chaos of her estate.
My hands trembled as I picked it up. 3 The weight of the brooch in my palm felt like a connection to a past I had been neglecting. Then I noticed a slip of paper stuffed beneath the velvet lining. The handwriting matched the package: “For the girl who loved listening to stories under the old oak tree. Keep this close when you write yours.”
4 Only Grandma called me that during our summer visits. I hadn’t seen her in two years before her death — too busy with school and friends to visit. Guilt washed over me like a tide. How easily life’s distractions can pull us away from what truly matters.
That evening, I examined the brooch under lamplight. 5 The year Grandma and I had spent afternoons recording made-up tales about the birds in her garden. I sat there, tears down, as I remembered those carefree days. From that moment on, I promised never to let life’s busyness overshadow the simple joys of family and connection.
A.A faint ray of silver caught my
