“Dear Baldman” begins the card from my son, which makes me sound like a Marvel
superhero with a head that blinds all criminals within 50 yards. Anyway, I’m glad to see that the top of my head still amuses others.
There was a time when losing my hair was no laughing matter. The loss of locks started when I was about 21 and in my first job — with an unreasonable boss. It was as if my hair,
stressed by the intense work environment and that particular boss, simply had decided to quit. Friends casually joked about my hairline going back.
So I decided to go to the barber’s. The stylist carefully picked the ends of my hairs from one side of my head to guide them over the barren summit (不毛之地) to start a new life with their relatives on the far side. The comb-over (梳发遮秃) was a kind of trick, and it didn’t stay combed or over when I got on my bicycle, opened the window or turned on a fan. I felt like an enemy agent whose real identity could be exposed at any time.
I was well aware that I was fooling no one. At 35, I asked the stylist to cut all my hair off. Yes, I was bald (秃头的). “Get over it. I was just getting my aging over early,” I thought. I could hold my head high — not just to hide the bald spot on top. Back at the office, I no longer had to duck into the restroom to repair my hairstyle.
That was more than half my life ago. Now, this came to my son, but, like other men of his generation, he is very decisive and shaves his whole head. He still looks young to me, so maybe I
don’t look too ancient to him. And I know my son will always refer to me as “the Baldman”. And we will always find it funny.
4 .Why did the author lose hair at an early age
A .He ignored his hair care. B .He led an unhealthy lifestyle.
C .He faced high work pressure. D .He had trouble in relationships.
5 .How did the author probably feel about his comb-over hairstyle
A .Amused. B .Insecure. C .Satisfied. D .Confident.
6 .What can we say about the author’s final decision
A .It’s a rushed action. B .It’s a helpless choice.
C .It’s a funny behavior. D .It’s a change for relief.
7 .What message does the author’s story convey
A .Make peace with what you look like. B .Don’t judge a book by its cover.
C .Actions speak louder than words. D .Like father, unlike son.

Few of us haven’t read Cinderella, the story of a young woman living in poverty who meets the prince of her dreams. Some might not want to admit it, but there is a hidden Cinderella in
everyone’s heart—we all wish we could achieve recognition or success after a period of obscurity or neglect.
Mary Santiago has that secret dream, too. Her story is featured in Another Cinderella Story, a film set in a US high school.
Mary is shy but loves to pared with other girls, she is invisible. However, her world changes completely when a famous teenager pop singer, Joey Parker, appears.
Joey is everything that the rest ofthe boys in her class are not — kind, handsome and
desirable. Mary and Joey’s paths cross at a ball. They meet and fall in love with each other. But
when Mary has to rush back home, she leaves behind her MP3 player, which becomes the only
clue Joey has to find the girl of his dreams. Of course, there is a wicked (邪恶的) stepmother, who turns out to be Dominique Blatt and she takes in Mary after her dancer mother dies. Dominique
treats Mary like a maid and does everything she can to make sure Mary doesn’t get into the top
dance school. Her two daughters are equally determined to stop Joey falling for Mary, even if that
means embarrassing her.
The story, though it mostly follows Cinderella, does add a few modern day twists to the classic fairy tale. Refreshingly, the film, unlike many high school films, does not focus on looks, although the actors are all beautiful. There is also a lot less materialism in Another Cinderella
Story than in many similar movies.
“The movie takes the Cinderella fairytale as its jumping off point,” writes the movie critic Amber Wilkinson. “The focus is firmly on following your dream.”

Google’s DeepMind can control a robotic arm to beat ordinary table tennis players,
according to a new study. But Fan Zhendong, the 2024 gold medalist for individual and team
men’s table tennis, can rest easy: The AI-powered robot could only beat players at a medium
level, and only on certain occasions, which was published but has not been reviewed by experts in this field.
Robots can now cook and clean, but they struggle to quickly respond to real-world
environmental information. Achieving human-level performance in terms of accuracy (准确性), speed and generality still remains a great challenge in many fields.
To overcome this limitation, the researchers combined an industrial robot arm with a
customized version of DeepMind’s powerful learning algorithms (算法). DeepMind uses neural networks to gradually learn new information. The system was also trained to master specific
aspects of the game — for example, the rules, the techniques of playing — with real-world and simulated (模拟的) data in algorithms.
As the AI learned, the researchers collected data on its strengths, weaknesses and
limitations. Then, they fed this information back to the AI program, thus giving DeepMind a
realistic impression of its abilities. The system picked which skills or plans to use in the moment, considering its competitors’ strengths and weaknesses, just like a human table-tennis player might. Most of the human players seemed to like playing against the system. They agreed that playing
with the robot was fun and attractive.
The new approach could be useful for a wide range of applications that call for quick responses in changing physical environments, as the researchers said.
12 .What can we know from paragraph 1
A .The robot can beat advanced human table tennis players.
B .The finding has been published and examined by experts.
C .Fan Zhendong can have a good rest because of the invention.
D .The level of players matters in the competition with the robot.
13 .How did the researchers improve the system
A .By adding more game rules to the system.
B .By replacing the control part with a new one.
C .By changing the robotic arm into a new version.
D .By combining the robotic arm with algorithms and data.
14 .What’s the most players’ attitude to this new approach
A .Unclear. B .Doubtful. C .Positive. D .Discontent.
15 .Which could be a practical application of the new approach
A .Making robots clean the floor in an empty bedroom.
B .Guiding robots to serve food in an orderly restaurant.
C .Directing robots to rescue people in a burning building.
D .Using robots to water plants in a well-organized garden.

Soilless farming, as the name implies, is a type of farming where plants are cultured and
grown without the use of the soil. It is also a systematic technique where plants are grown without the use of soil as a rooting environment. 16
Due to lacking originality, conventional farming has many processes and requires the
manure (肥料) of chemical mixtures to make the soil rich in nutrients 17 Nutrients are provided to the plants, majorly in liquid form, and their needs are met throughout life, from seeds to ripe fruit.
In many soilless farming systems, water is recycled and reused until the plants are ready to harvest. 18 Additionally, it reduces the physical labor and energy required from
workers, helping them achieve higher profits while keeping costs very low.
By following standardized steps throughout the entire production process, soilless farming can supply crops to the market every day, meeting consumers’ needs. When countries that rely on food imports see how productive this farming method is, they will begin growing crops locally all year round. 19
20 The rate at which pathogens (病原体) attack the farm will be zero as a result of how the planting environment is concerned, and if the pathogen ever attacks, the infected plant will be easily separated to avoid infecting the farm as a whole. Developed countries in the world are expected to adopt this mode of farming because doing so reduces the level of food importation and increases the availability of food in the country.
A .However, soil farming requires more workload.
B .The quality of the harvested food may be controlled.
C .After all, food imports might pollute the environment.
D .Hence, soilless farming is an alternative to dry regions.
E .With this method, crops can be planted almost everywhere.
F .Soilless farming has less workload and can enhance growth.
G .In this way, even seasonal produce can be harvested anytime.

I am a senior one student named Leo. I used to be a total couch potato and I’d rather stick to my classroom seat or dorm bed than step outside for even a minute. For meals, I always reached
for instant noodles or fried chicken. After school, I would spend all my time on mobile games until midnight, paying no attention to any kind of physical activity.
As time went by, the situation became worse, and slowly, my body began to send out
warnings. Every class felt like a big struggle. I felt sleepy in class all the time, and I could hardly focus on the teacher’s words. My teacher noticed my tired eyes more than once, and finally, she held my arm gently and told me to go to the school doctor for a check-up.
After a thorough examination, the doctor said my poor health was caused by too little
exercise, irregular sleep, and an unhealthy diet. She frowned (皱眉) slightly as she warned me that if I didn’t change, it would harm my long-term health.
When my classmate Jason heard about this, he kindly invited me to join the school running club. To be honest, I felt ashamed of my poor fitness. So, his invitation fell on deaf ears. I stuck to my old habits, telling myself I was just “not the sporty type.” I thought I would be fine, but my
body didn’t lie.
Last week, we had the regular 800-meter test in PE class. As everyone else lined up, my heart
sank. I dragged my feet to the starting line, hoping just to finish. But after only 200 meters, it was as ifall the warnings came crashing down on me. I was gasping (喘气) for air, and I had to stop, my face pale not just from effort, but from a sudden, clear realisation of how weak I had become.注意:
1 .续写词数应为 150 左右;
2 .请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

46 .Dear classmates,
I’m very honored to introduce my short video.
My video is themed on the Mid-Autumn Festival, a time for family reunion. It captures warm moments: my grandma making mooncakes with skillful hands, our family gathering in the yard
admiring the bright full moon, and kids chasing each other while carrying lovely rabbit lanterns. I also added some folk stories about the festival to enrich the content.
Making this video deepened my understanding of traditional culture. It’s not just about
delicious food and beautiful scenery, but the love and bond among family members. I hope my video can share the joy of the festival with all of you.
Yours,
Li Hua

It was at that moment that I recalled Jason’s invitation. My face burned with shame as I stood there, breathless and weak. I deeply regretted refusing his kindness before. With my head down, I walked slowly towards Jason and asked in a low voice if I could still join the running
club. He smiled widely and nodded immediately, patting my shoulder to encourage me. Starting the next day, I got up early to run with him. At first, I felt tired and wanted to give up, but Jason kept cheering me on, and I forced myself to keep going.
Weeks of regular running brought great changes to my life. I no longer felt sleepy in class and could focus much better on my lessons. My body felt stronger, and I no longer feared the
800-meter test. I gave up instant noodles and chose healthy food, and I also stopped staying up late playing games. I became more energetic and confident. Looking at my progress, I realized that small but consistent changes could completely turn my life around, and I was truly grateful for Jason’s help.
